Shiva-Parvati Dialogue, Garuda's Delusion, and Kakbhushundi's Rama Katha
Through the dialogue of Shiva and Parvati, the cause of Garuda's delusion is revealed. Garuda then listens to the nectar-like Rama Katha and the Lord's boundless glory from Kakbhushundi.

गिरिजा सुनहु बिसद यह कथा। मैं सब कही मोरि मति जथा॥ राम चरित सत कोटि अपारा। श्रुति सारदा न बरनै पारा॥ १ ॥

girijā sunahu bisada yaha kathā। maiṃ saba kahī mori mati jathā॥ rāma carita sata koṭi apārā। śruti sāradā na baranai pārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
[Shiva says:] O Girija, listen: I have told this clear story as far as my intellect allowed. Rama's deeds are limitless—many crores, indeed beyond measure. Even the Vedas and Saraswati cannot describe them.
राम अनंत अनंत गुनानी। जन्म कर्म अनंत नामानी॥ जल सीकर महि रज गनि जाहीं। रघुपति चरित न बरनि सिराहीं॥ २ ॥

rāma ananta ananta gunānī। janma karma ananta nāmānī॥ jala sīkara mahi raja gani jāhīṃ। raghupati carita na barani sirāhīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Lord Rama is infinite; his virtues are infinite; his births, deeds, and names are also infinite. Even if the drops of water and the grains of earth were counted, the deeds of the Lord of the Raghus could not be fully narrated.
बिमल कथा हरि पद दायनी। भगति होइ सुनि अनपायनी॥ उमा कहिउँ सब कथा सुहाई। जो भुसुंडि खगपतिहि सुनाई॥ ३ ॥

bimala kathā hari pada dāyanī। bhagati hoi suni anapāyanī॥ umā kahiuṃ saba kathā suhāī। jo bhusuṃḍi khagapatihi sunāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
This pure story grants the supreme abode of Hari. By hearing it, unwavering devotion arises. O Uma, I have told the beautiful story that Kaka Bhusundi narrated to Garuda.
कछुक राम गुन कहेउँ बखानी। अब का कहौं सो कहहु भवानी॥ सुनि सुभ कथा उमा हरषानी। बोली अति बिनीत मृदु बानी॥ ४ ॥

kachuka rāma guna kaheuṃ bakhānī। aba kā kahauṃ so kahahu bhavānī॥ suni subha kathā umā haraṣānī। bolī ati binīta mṛdu bānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
I have described only a few of Rama's virtues. Now what more can I say, O Bhavani? Hearing this beautiful story, Uma was delighted and spoke in a very humble, gentle voice—
तुम्हरी कृपाँ कृपायतन अब कृतकृत्य न मोह। जानेउँ राम प्रताप प्रभु चिदानंद संदोह॥ ५२ (क) ॥

tumharī kṛpāṃ kṛpāyatana aba kṛtakṛtya na moha। jāneuṃ rāma pratāpa prabhu cidānaṃda saṃdoha॥ 52 (a) ॥
Meaning:
O abode of grace, by your grace I am now fulfilled. Delusion no longer remains in me. O Lord, I have come to know the glory of the Lord Rama, full of consciousness and bliss.
नाथ तवानन ससि स्रवत कथा सुधा रघुबीर। श्रवन पुटन्हि मन पान करि नहिं अघात मतिधीर॥ ५२ (ख) ॥

nātha tavānana sasi sravata kathā sudhā raghubīra। śravana puṭanhi mana pāna kari nahiṃ aghāta matidhīra॥ 52 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, your moonlike face pours forth the nectar of Raghubir's story. O wise-minded one, my heart is never satiated with drinking it through the ears.
राम चरित जे सुनत अघाहीं। रस बिसेष जाना तिन्ह नाहीं॥ जीवनमुक्त महामुनि जेऊ। हरि गुन सुनहिं निरंतर तेऊ॥ १ ॥

rāma carita je sunata aghāhīṃ। rasa biśeṣa jānā tinh nāhīṃ॥ jīvanamukta mahāmuni jeū। hari guna sunahiṃ niraṃtara teū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Those who grow weary even while hearing Rama's deeds do not know their special savor at all. Even the great sages who are liberated while living keep hearing Hari's virtues without pause.
भव सागर चह पार जो पावा। राम कथा ता कहँ दृढ़ नावा॥ बिषइन्ह कहँ पुनि हरि गुन ग्रामा। श्रवन सुखद अरु मन अभिरामा॥ २ ॥

bhava sāgara caha pāra jo pāvā। rāma kathā tā kahaṃ dṛḍha nāvā॥ biṣainh kahaṃ puni hari guna grāmā। śravana sukhada aru mana abhirāmā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
For one who wishes to cross the ocean of worldly existence, Rama's story is a firm boat. And the host of Hari's virtues is pleasing to the ears and delightful to the mind even for those attached to worldly pleasures.
श्रवनवंत अस को जग माहीं। जाहि न रघुपति चरित सोहाहीं॥ ते जड़ जीव निजात्मक घाती। जिन्हहि न रघुपति कथा सोहाती॥ ३ ॥

śravaṇavaṃta asa ko jaga māhīṃ। jāhi na raghupati carita sohāhīṃ॥ te jaḍa jīva nijātmaka ghātī। jinhahi na raghupati kathā sohātī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Who in the world has ears and yet does not delight in the deeds of Raghupati? Those who do not delight in Raghupati's story are dull beings who destroy their own souls.
हरिचरित्र मानस तुम्ह गावा। सुनि मैं नाथ अमिति सुख पावा॥ तुम्ह जो कही यह कथा सुहाई। कागभसुंडि गरुड़ प्रति गाई॥ ४ ॥

haricaritra mānasa tumha gāvā। suni maiṃ nātha amiti sukha pāvā॥ tumha jo kahī yaha kathā suhāī। kāgabhasuṃḍi garuḍa prati gāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, you sang the Ramcharitmanas, and hearing it I obtained immense joy. You said that this beautiful story was sung to Garuda by Kaka Bhusundi—
बिरति ग्यान बिग्यान दृढ़ राम चरन अति नेह। बायस तन रघुपति भगति मोहि परम संदेह॥ ५३ ॥

birati gñāna bigyāna dṛḍha rāma carana ati neha। bāyasa tana raghupati bhagati mohi parama saṃdeha॥ 53 ॥
Meaning:
How can it be that, having obtained a crow's body, Kaka Bhusundi is steadfast in renunciation, knowledge, and realization, and has such intense love for Rama's feet and devotion to Raghupati? This fills me with profound doubt.
नर सहस्र महँ सुनहु पुरारी। कोउ एक होइ धर्म ब्रतधारी॥ धर्मसील कोटिक महँ कोई। बिषय बिमुख बिराग रत होई॥ १ ॥

nara sahasra mahaṃ sunahu purārī। kou eka hoi dharma bratadhārī॥ dharmasīla koṭika mahaṃ koī। biṣaya bimukha birāga rata hoī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Tripurari, listen: among thousands of men, only one may be a follower of dharma and vows. And among millions of righteous people, only one turns away from worldly objects and is devoted to detachment.
कोटि बिरक्त मध्य श्रुति कहई। सम्यक ग्यान सकृत कोउ लहई॥ ग्यानवंत कोटिक महँ कोऊ। जीवनमुक्त सकृत जग सोऊ॥ २ ॥

koṭi birakta madhya śruti kahī। samyaka gyāna sakṛta kou lahī॥ gyānavanta koṭika mahaṃ koū। jīvanmukta sakṛta jaga soū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The Vedas say that among millions of the detached, only one attains true knowledge. And among millions of the wise, only one is liberated while living. In the world, such a one is indeed rare.
तिन्ह सहस्र महुँ सब सुख खानी। दुर्लभ ब्रह्म लीन बिग्यानी॥ धर्मसील बिरक्त अरु ग्यानी। जीवनमुक्त ब्रह्मपर प्रानी॥ ३ ॥

tinh sahasra mahuṃ saba sukha khānī। durlabha brahma līna bigyānī॥ dharmasīla birakta aru gyānī। jīvanmukta brahmapara prānī॥ 3 ॥

Among thousands of liberated beings, even rarer is the wise one merged in Brahman, the source of all happiness. The righteous, the detached, the wise, the liberated, and the Brahman-absorbed being—
सब ते सो दुर्लभ सुरराया। राम भगति रत गत मद माया॥ सो हरिभगति काग किमि पाई। बिस्वनाथ मोहि कहहु बुझाई॥ ४ ॥

saba te so durlabha surarāyā। rāma bhagati rata gata mada māyā॥ so haribhagati kāga kimi pāī। bisvanātha mohi kahahu bujhāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Among all these, O lord of the gods, the one most difficult to find is he who is free from pride and illusion and devoted to Rama-bhakti. O Vishvanath, tell me clearly how that rare Hari-bhakti came to the crow.
राम परायन ग्यान रत गुनागार मति धीर। नाथ कहहु केहि कारन पायउ काक सरीर॥ ५४ ॥

rāma parāyana gyāna rata gunāgāra mati dhīra। nātha kahahu kehi kārana pāyau kāka sarīra॥ 54 ॥

O Lord, tell me: for what reason did such a Rama-devoted, knowledge-absorbed, treasure-house of virtues, and steady-minded Bhusundi obtain the body of a crow?
यह प्रभु चरित पवित्र सुहावा। कहहु कृपाल काग कहँ पावा॥ तुम्ह केहि भाँति सुना मदनारी। कहहु मोहि अति कौतुक भारी॥ १ ॥

yaha prabhu carita pavitra suhāvā। kahahu kṛpāla kāga kahaṃ pāvā॥ tumha kehi bhāṃti sunā madanārī। kahahu mohi ati kautuka bhārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O merciful one, tell me: where did that crow obtain this sacred and beautiful account of the Lord? And, O enemy of Cupid, tell me also how you heard it. I feel a great curiosity.
गरुड़ महाग्यानी गुन रासी। हरि सेवक अति निकट निवासी॥ तेहिं केहि हेतु काग सन जाई। सुनी कथा मुनि निकर बिहाई॥ २ ॥

garuḍa mahāgyānī guna rāsī। hari sevaka ati nikaṭa nivāsī॥ tehiṃ kehi hetu kāga sana jāī। sunī kathā muni nikara bihāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Garuda is truly a great sage, a treasury of virtues, a servant of Hari, and one who dwells very near Him. Why did he leave the company of sages and go to the crow to hear the Lord’s story?
कहहु कवन बिधि भा संबादा। दोउ हरिभगत काग उरगादा॥ गौरि गिरा सुनि सरल सुहाई। बोले सिव सादर सुख पाई॥ ३ ॥

kahahu kavan bidhi bhā sambādā। dou haribhagata kāga uragādā॥ gauri girā suni sarala suhāī। bole siva sādara sukha pāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Tell me, how did the conversation between these two devotees of Hari, Kaka Bhushundi and Garuda, take place? Hearing Parvati’s gentle and beautiful speech, Shiva spoke respectfully, filled with joy.
धन्य सती पावन मति तोरी। रघुपति चरन प्रीति नहिं थोरी॥ सुनहु परम पुनीत इतिहासा। जो सुनि सकल लोक भ्रम नासा॥ ४ ॥

dhanya satī pāvana mati torī। raghupati carana prīti nahiṃ thorī॥ sunahu parama punīta itihāsā। jo suni sakala loka bhrama nāsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Sati, blessed are you; your understanding is pure. Your devotion to the feet of Raghupati is by no means small. Now hear that supremely sacred history, by hearing which the delusion of all the worlds is destroyed.
ऐसिअ प्रस्न बिहंगपति कीन्हि काग सन जाइ। सो सब सादर कहिहउँ सुनहु उमा मन लाइ॥ ५५ ॥

aisia prasna bihaṅgapati kīnhi kāga sana jāi। so saba sādara kahihauṃ sunahu umā mana lāi॥ 55 ॥
Meaning:
Garuda, king of birds, also went and asked Kaka Bhushundi nearly the same questions. O Uma, I shall tell you all that with respect; listen with attention.
मैं जिमि कथा सुनी भव मोचनि। सो प्रसंग सुनु सुमुखि सुलोचनि॥ प्रथम दच्छ गृह तव अवतारा। सती नाम तब रहा तुम्हारा॥ १ ॥

maiṃ jimi kathā sunī bhava mocanī। so prasaṅga sunu sumukhi sulocani॥ prathama dachcha gṛha tava avatārā। satī nāma taba rahā tumhārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Listen, fair-faced and beautiful-eyed one, to the account as I heard it—the story that grants liberation from worldly existence. In the beginning, your incarnation was in the house of Daksha, and your name then was Sati.
दच्छ जग्य तव भा अपमाना। तुम्ह अति क्रोध तजे तब प्राना॥ मम अनुचरन्ह कीन्ह मख भंगा। जानहु तुम्ह सो सकल प्रसंगा॥ २ ॥

dachcha jagya tava bhā apamānā। tumha ati krodha taje taba prānā॥ mama anucaranha kīnha makha bhaṅgā। jānahu tumha so sakala prasaṅgā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
At Daksha’s sacrifice, you were insulted. Then, in great anger, you gave up your life; and afterward my attendants destroyed the sacrifice. You know the whole episode well.
तब अति सोच भयउ मन मोरें। दुखी भयउँ बियोग प्रिय तोरें॥ सुंदर बन गिरि सरित तड़ागा। कौतुक देखत फिरउँ बेरागा॥ ३ ॥

taba ati soca bhayau mana moreṃ। dukhī bhayauṃ biyoga priya toreṃ॥ suṃdara bana giri sarita taḍāgā। kautuka dekhat firauṃ berāgā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then deep sorrow arose in my mind, and, O beloved, I became distressed by separation from you. In a spirit of detachment, I would wander about seeing the lovely forests, mountains, rivers, and ponds as curiosities.
गिरि सुमेर उत्तर दिसि दूरी। नील सैल एक सुंदर भूरी॥ तासु कनकमय सिखर सुहाए। चारि चारु मोरे मन भाए॥ ४ ॥

giri sumeru uttara disi dūrī। nīla saila eka sundara bhūrī॥ tāsu kanakamaya sikhara suhāe। cāri cāru more mana bhāe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Far to the north of Mount Sumeru there is a very beautiful blue mountain. Its lovely golden peaks are charming; four of those beautiful peaks greatly delighted my mind.
तिन्ह पर एक एक बिटप बिसाला। बट पीपर पाकरी रसाला॥ सैलोपरि सर सुंदर सोहा। मनि सोपान देखि मन मोहा॥ ५ ॥

tinha para eka eka biṭapa bisālā। baṭa pīpara pākarī rasālā॥ sailopari sara sundara sohā। mani sopāna dekhi mana mohā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
On each of those peaks stands a huge tree—banyan, peepal, pakar, and mango. Above the mountain shines a beautiful lake, and seeing the steps made of jewels, the mind is enchanted.
सीतल अमल मधुर जल जलज बिपुल बहुरंग। कूजत कल रव हंस गन गुंजत मंजुल भृंग॥ ५६ ॥

sītala amala madhura jala jalaja bipula bahuraṅga। kūjata kala rava haṃsa gana guñjata mañjula bhṛṅga॥ 56 ॥
Meaning:
Its water is cool, pure, and sweet; many lotus flowers of varied colors bloom there; swans are singing in soft sweet tones, and bees are humming beautifully.
तेहिं गिरि रुचिर बसइ खग सोई। तासु नास कल्पांत न होई॥ माया कृत गुन दोष अनेका। मोह मनोज आदि अबिबेका॥ १ ॥

tehiṃ giri rucira basai khaga soī। tāsu nāsa kalpānta na hoī॥ māyā kṛta guna doṣa anekā। moha manoja ādi abibekā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
On that beautiful mountain lives that very bird. Even at the end of a kalpa, his destruction does not come. There are countless qualities and faults created by Maya, along with delusion, desire, and other forms of folly.
रहे ब्यापि समस्त जग माहीं। तेहि गिरि निकट कबहुँ नहिं जाहीं॥ तहँ बसि हरिहि भजइ जिमि कागा। सो सुनु उमा सहित अनुरागा॥ २ ॥

rahe byāpi samasta jaga māhīṃ। tehi giri nikaṭa kabahuṃ nahiṃ jāhīṃ॥ tahaṃ basi harihi bhajai jimi kāgā। so sunu umā sahita anurāgā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Though they pervade the whole world, they never go near that mountain. There, dwelling as a crow, he worships Hari; O Uma, hear of it with affection.
पीपर तरु तर ध्यान सो धरई। जाप जग्य पाकरि तर करई॥ आँब छाँह कर मानस पूजा। तजि हरि भजनु काजु नहिं दूजा॥ ३ ॥

pīpara taru tara dhyāna so dharai। jāpa jagya pākari tara karai॥ āṃba chāṃha kara mānasa pūjā। taji hari bhajanu kāju nahiṃ dūjā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
He sits in meditation beneath the peepal tree. Beneath the pakar tree he performs the sacrifice of japa. In the shade of the mango tree he offers worship in the mind. Apart from devotion to Hari, he has no other task.
बर तर कह हरि कथा प्रसंगा। आवहिं सुनहिं अनेक बिहंगा॥ राम चरित बिचित्र बिधि नाना। प्रेम सहित कर सादर गाना॥ ४ ॥

bara tara kaha hari kathā prasaṅgā। āvahiṃ sunahiṃ aneka bihaṅgā॥ rāma carita bicitra bidhi nānā। prema sahita kara sādara gānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Under the banyan tree he speaks of the Lord’s sacred stories. Many birds come there and listen. He sings the wondrous deeds of Rama in many ways, with love and reverence.
सुनहिं सकल मति बिमल मराला। बसहिं निरंतर जे तेहिं ताला॥ जब मैं जाइ सो कौतुक देखा। उर उपजा आनंद बिसेषा॥ ५ ॥

sunahiṃ sakala mati bimala marālā। basahiṃ nirantara je tehiṃ tālā॥ jaba maiṃ jāi so kautuka dekhā। ura upajā ānanda biseṣā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
All the swans of pure intellect, who dwell constantly in that lake, listen to him. When I went there and saw this wondrous sight, extraordinary joy arose in my heart.
तब कछु काल मराल तनु धरि तहँ कीन्ह निवास। सादर सुनि रघुपति गुन पुनि आयउँ कैलास॥ ५७ ॥

taba kachu kāla marāla tanu dhari tahaṃ kīnha nivāsa। sādara suni raghupati guna puni āyauṃ kailāsa॥ 57 ॥
Meaning:
Then I assumed the body of a swan and lived there for some time. After listening respectfully to the virtues of Raghupati, I returned again to Kailasa.
गिरिजा कहेउँ सो सब इतिहासा। मैं जेहि समय गयउँ खग पासा॥ अब सो कथा सुनहु जेहि हेतू। गयउ काग पहिं खग कुल केतू॥ १ ॥

girijā kaheuṃ so saba itihāsā। maiṃ jehi samaya gayauṃ khaga pāsā॥ aba so kathā sunahu jehi hetū। gayau kāga pahiṃ khaga kula ketū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Girija, I have told you that whole account from the time when I went to the bird-sage. Now hear the story of why Garuda, the banner of the bird race, went to that crow.
जब रघुनाथ कीन्हि रन क्रीड़ा। समुझत चरित होति मोहि ब्रीड़ा॥ इंद्रजीत कर आपु बँधायो। तब नारद मुनि गरुड़ पठायो॥ २ ॥

jaba raghunātha kīnhi rana krīḍā। samujhata carita hoti mohi brīḍā॥ indrajīta kara āpu baṃdhāyo। taba nārada muni garuḍa paṭhāyo॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When Raghunath performed that battle-play, whose remembrance fills me with shame—when He allowed Himself to be bound by Indrajit—then the sage Narada sent Garuda.
बंधन काटि गयो उरगादा। उपजा हृदयँ प्रचंड बिषादा॥ प्रभु बंधन समुझत बहु भाँती। करत बिचार उरग आराती॥ ३ ॥

bandhana kāṭi gayo uragādā। upajā hṛdayaṃ pracaṇḍa biṣādā॥ prabhu bandhana samujhata bahu bhāṃtī। karata bicāra uraga ārātī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Garuda, the enemy of serpents, cut the bonds and departed; then terrible sorrow arose in his heart. Remembering the Lord’s bondage in many ways, Garuda, foe of serpents, began to reflect deeply.
ब्यापक ब्रह्म बिरज बागीसा। माया मोह पार परमीसा॥ सो अवतार सुनेउँ जग माहीं। देखेउँ सो प्रभाव कछु नाहीं॥ ४ ॥

byāpaka brahma biraja bāgīsā। māyā moha pāra paramīsā॥ so avatāra suneuṃ jaga māhīṃ। dekheuṃ so prabhāva kachu nāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He is the all-pervading Brahman, free from blemish, lord of speech, and beyond Maya and delusion. I had heard that the Lord had appeared in the world as that very incarnation, but I saw no sign of such power at all.
भव बंधन ते छूटहिं नर जपि जा कर नाम। खर्ब निसाचर बाँधेउ नागपास सोइ राम॥ ५८ ॥

bhava baṃdhana te chūṭahiṃ nara japi jā kara nāma। kharba nisācara bāṃḍheu nāgapāsa soi rāma॥ 58 ॥
Meaning:
Men are freed from the bonds of worldly existence by repeating whose name, and yet that same Rama was bound in the serpent-noose by a wretched demon.
नाना भाँति मनहि समुझावा। प्रगट न ग्यान हृदयँ भ्रम छावा॥ खेद खिन्न मन तर्क बढ़ाई। भयउ मोहबस तुम्हरिहिं नाई॥ १ ॥

nānā bhāṃti manahi samujhāvā। pragaṭa na gyāna hṛdayaṃ bhrama chāvā॥ kheda khinna mana tarka baṛhāī। bhayau mohabasa tumharihiṃ nāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Garuda tried in many ways to persuade his mind. Yet knowledge did not arise; confusion spread more and more in his heart. Weighed down by sorrow born of doubt, and strengthening his own reasoning, he too became deluded like you.
ब्याकुल गयउ देवरिषि पाहीं। कहेसि जो संसय निज मन माहीं॥ सुनि नारदहि लागि अति दाया। सुनु खग प्रबल राम कै माया॥ २ ॥

In distress, he went to the divine sage Narada and told him the doubt in his mind. Hearing it, Narada felt great compassion. [He said:] Listen, Garuda, the Maya of Rama is exceedingly powerful.
जो ग्यानिन्ह कर चित अपहरई। बरिआईं बिमोह मन करई॥ जेहिं बहु बार नचावा मोही। सोइ ब्यापी बिहंगपति तोही॥ ३ ॥

Meaning:
That very Maya which can even seize the minds of the wise, forcing a great delusion upon their hearts, and which has made me dance many times, has also overpowered you, O lord of birds.
महामोह उपजा उर तोरें। मिटिहि न बेगि कहें खग मोरें॥ चतुरानन पहिं जाहु खगेसा। सोइ करेहु जेहि होइ निदेसा॥ ४ ॥

mahāmoha upajā ura toreṃ। miṭihi na begi kaheṃ khaga moreṃ॥ caturānana pahiṃ jāhu khagesā। soi karehu jehi hoi nidesā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Garuda, great delusion has arisen in your heart. It will not be removed quickly by my words. Therefore, O lord of birds, go to Brahma, and there do whatever you are instructed to do.
अस कहि चले देवरिषि करत राम गुन गान। हरि माया बल बरनत पुनि पुनि परम सुजान॥ ५९ ॥

Meaning:
Having said this, the supremely wise divine sage Narada departed, singing the praises of Rama and again and again describing the power of Hari’s Maya.
तब खगपति बिरंचि पहिं गयऊ। निज संदेह सुनावत भयऊ॥ सुनि बिरंचि रामहि सिरु नावा। समुझि प्रताप प्रेम अति छावा॥ १ ॥

Meaning:
Then Garuda, lord of birds, went to Brahma and told him his doubt. Hearing it, Brahma bowed his head to Rama. Understanding His glory, he was filled with great love.
मन महुँ करइ बिचार बिधाता। माया बस कबि कोबिद ग्याता॥ हरि माया कर अमिति प्रभावा। बिपुल बार जेहिं मोहि नचावा॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
Brahma began to reflect that poets, scholars, and wise men alike are all subject to Maya. The power of the Lord’s Maya is boundless; it has made even me dance many times.
अग जगमय जग मम उपराजा। नहिं आचरज मोह खगराजा॥ तब बोले बिधि गिरा सुहाई। जान महेस राम प्रभुताई॥ ३ ॥

Meaning:
This entire moving and unmoving world is my creation. If even I begin to dance under the spell of Maya, then it is no wonder that Garuda, lord of birds, should be deluded. Then Brahma spoke in sweet words: Shiva knows the greatness of Rama.
बैनतेय संकर पहिं जाहू। तात अनत पूछहु जनि काहू॥ तहँ होइहि तव संसय हानी। चलेउ बिहंग सुनत बिधि बानी॥ ४ ॥

O Garuda, go to Shankar. Dear one, do not ask anyone else. Your doubt will be removed there. Hearing Brahma’s words, Garuda set out at once.
परमातुर बिहंगपति आयउ तब मो पास। जात रहेउँ कुबेर गृह रहिहु उमा कैलास॥ ६० ॥

Meaning:
Then Garuda, lord of birds, came to me in great urgency. O Uma, at that time I was going to Kubera’s house, and you were on Kailasa.
तेहिं मम पद सादर सिरु नावा। पुनि आपन संदेह सुनावा॥ सुनि ता करि बिनती मृदु बानी। प्रेम सहित मैं कहेउँ भवानी॥ १ ॥

O Garuda, you have met me on the road. How can I explain this to you while traveling? All doubts are dispelled only when one keeps holy company for a long time.

And there, in that holy company, one should hear the beautiful tales of Hari, sung in many ways by the sages, and in which Lord Rama alone is the subject from beginning, middle, and end.
नित हरि कथा होत जहँ भाई। पठवउँ तहाँ सुनहु तुम्ह जाई॥ जाइहि सुनत सकल संदेहा। राम चरन होइहि अति नेहा॥ ४ ॥

O brother, I will send you to the place where Hari’s stories are spoken every day; go and listen there. As soon as you hear them, all your doubts will vanish, and you will feel great love for Rama’s feet.

Meaning:
Without holy company, one does not obtain the hearing of Hari’s stories; without that, delusion does not depart; and without delusion’s being gone, firm and unshakable love for Rama’s feet does not arise.
मिलहिं न रघुपति बिनु अनुरागा। किएँ जोग तप ग्यान बिरागा॥ उत्तर दिसि सुंदर गिरि नीला। तहँ रह काकभुसुंडि सुसीला॥ १ ॥

Raghupati is not attained merely by practicing yoga, austerity, knowledge, and renunciation without love. Therefore, go for holy company to a place where there is a beautiful blue mountain in the north. There dwells the most gentle Kākabhushundi.

He is supremely skilled in the path of devotion to Rama, wise, a treasury of virtues, and of long standing. He constantly speaks the story of Rama, which various noble birds listen to with reverence.

O Uma, I did not explain it to him because, by Rama’s grace, I had understood his inner secret. He must have once become proud, and the treasure of compassion, Rama, wishes to destroy that pride.

And I also did not keep him with me because birds understand only the language of birds. O Bhavani, the Lord’s Maya is exceedingly powerful; what wise person is there whom it cannot delude?
ग्यानी भगत सिरोमनि त्रिभुवनपति कर जान। ताहि मोह माया नर पावँर करहिं गुमान॥ ६२ (क) ॥

Meaning:
Even Garuda, who is the crest-jewel among the wise and the devotees and who is the vehicle of the Lord of the three worlds, was deluded by Maya. Yet lowly men still go on being proud in their foolishness.

When this Maya can even delude Shiva and Brahma, then what of any other poor soul? Knowing this in their hearts, the sages worship the Lord, the master of Maya.
गयउ गरुड़ जहँ बसइ भुसुंडा। मति अकुंठ हरि भगति अखंडा॥ देखि सैल प्रसन्न मन भयऊ। माया मोह सोच सब गयऊ॥ १ ॥

Garuda went to where Bhushundi lived, endowed with unwavering intellect and undivided devotion to Hari. Seeing the mountain, his mind became joyful, and all illusion, delusion, and anxiety vanished.
करि तड़ाग मज्जन जलपाना। बट तर गयउ हृदयँ हरषाना॥ बृद्ध बृद्ध बिहंग तहँ आए। सुनै राम के चरित सुहाए॥ २ ॥

After bathing in the tank and drinking water, he went beneath the banyan tree, his heart rejoicing. There were many aged birds there, listening to Rama's lovely deeds.
कथा अरंभ करै सोइ चाहा। तेही समय गयउ खगनाहा॥ आवत देखि सकल खगराजा। हरषेउ बायस सहित समाजा॥ ३ ॥

Bhushundi was just about to begin the story when, at that very moment, the chief of the birds arrived. Seeing the king of birds coming, Bhushundi and the whole assembly of birds rejoiced.

They showed great honor to Garuda, greeted him warmly, and gave him a fine seat. Then, after worshipping him with loving devotion, the crow spoke sweetly.

Now, dear one, please lovingly recite to me the supremely purifying story of Shri Rama, ever joyous and the destroyer of heaps of sorrow. O Lord, I beseech you again and again.

O Bhavani, first he spoke with great devotion, explaining the allegory of the Ramcharit as a lake. Then he told of Narada's immense delusion, and afterward of Ravana's birth.
बालचरित कहि बिबिधि बिधि मन महँ परम उछाह। रिषि आगवन कहेसि पुनि श्रीरघुबीर बिबाह॥ ६४ ॥

Describing the many kinds of childhood deeds with great joy in his heart, he then told of the sages' arrival and Shri Raghubir's wedding.
बहुरि राम अभिषेक प्रसंगा। पुनि नृप बचन राज रस भंगा॥ पुरबासिन्ह कर बिरह बिषादा। कहेसि राम लछिमन संबादा॥ १ ॥

Then he narrated Shri Rama's coronation, the king's words that shattered the joy of kingship, and the sorrow of separation among the city dwellers, along with the conversation between Rama and Lakshmana.
बिपिन गवन केवट अनुरागा। सुरसरि उतरि निवास प्रयागा॥ बालमीक प्रभु मिलन बखाना। चित्रकूट जिमि बसे भगवाना॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
He told of Rama's departure to the forest, the boatman's devotion, crossing the river and staying at Prayag, the meeting of Valmiki and the Lord, and how the Lord dwelt in Chitrakut.
सचिवागवन नगर नृप मरना। भरतागवन प्रेम बहु बरना॥ करि नृप क्रिया संग पुरबासी। भरत गए जहँ प्रभु सुख रासी॥ ३ ॥

sacivāgavana nagara nṛpa maranā। bharatāgavana prema bahu baranā॥ kari nṛpa kriyā saṃga purabāsī। bharata gae jahaṃ prabhu sukha rāsī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
He then narrated Minister Sumantra's return to the city, King Dasharatha's death, Bharata's coming, and much about his devotion. After performing the king's funeral rites, Bharata went with the townspeople to where the Lord, the treasure of bliss, was.
पुनि रघुपति बहु बिधि समुझाए। लै पादुका अवधपुर आए॥ भरत रहनि सुरपति सुत करनी। प्रभु अरु अत्रि भेंट पुनि बरनी॥ ४ ॥

puni raghupati bahu bidhi samujhāe। lai pādukā avadhapura āe॥ bharata rahani surapati suta karanī। prabhu aru atri bheṃṭa puni baranī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then Shri Raghunath explained many things to him, after which he returned to Ayodhya with the sandals; this story was told. He also described Bharata's way of living, the base deed of Indra's son, and again the meeting of Lord Shri Rama with Atri.
कहि बिराध बध जेहि बिधि देह तजी सरभंग। बरनि सुतीछन प्रीति पुनि प्रभु अगस्ति सतसंग॥ ६५ ॥

kahi birādha badha jehi bidhi deha tajī sarabhaṃga। barani sutīchana prīti puni prabhu agasti satasaṃga॥ 65 ॥
Meaning:
He described how Viradha was slain and how Sharabhanga gave up his body, then told of Sutichan's devotion and the Lord's holy association with Agastya.
कहि दंडक बन पावनताई। गीध मइत्री पुनि तेहिं गाई॥ पुनि प्रभु पंचबटीं कृत बासा। भंजी सकल मुनिन्ह की त्रासा॥ १ ॥

He spoke of the sanctity of Dandaka forest and then recounted the friendship with the vulture king. He next told how the Lord dwelt in Panchavati and dispelled all the sages' fear.
पुनि लछिमन उपदेस अनूपा। सूपनखा जिमि कीन्हि कुरूपा॥ खर दूषन बध बहुरि बखाना। जिमि सब मरमु दसानन जाना॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
Then he narrated the incomparable teaching given to Lakshmana and how Surpanakha was made deformed. He again described the slaying of Khara and Dushana, and how Ravana came to know the whole matter.
दसकंधर मारीच बतकही। जेहि बिधि भई सो सब तेहिं कही॥ पुनि माया सीता कर हरना। श्रीरघुबीर बिरह कछु बरना॥ ३ ॥

He spoke of the conversation between Dashakantha and Maricha, and told how everything happened. Then he described the abduction of Maya Sita and something of Shri Raghubir's separation.

Then the Lord performed the rites for the vulture Jatayu, slew Kabandha, and granted Shabari her blessed destiny. Again, while describing separation, he told how Raghubir went to the bank of the lake.

After narrating the Lord's conversation with Narada and the episode of Maruti's meeting, he then told of Sugriva's friendship and the destruction of Bali's life.

kapihi tilaka kari prabhu kṛta saila prabaraṣana bāsa। baranana barṣā sarada aru rāma roṣa kapi trāsa॥ 66 (b) ॥
Meaning:
After crowning the monkey king, the Lord dwelt on Mount Pravarshana. He described the rains and autumn, Shri Rama's anger toward Sugriva, and the monkeys' fear.
जेहि बिधि कपिपति कीस पठाए। सीता खोज सकल दिसि धाए॥ बिबर प्रबेस कीन्ह जेहि भाँती। कपिन्ह बहोरि मिला संपाती॥ १ ॥

jehi bidhi kapipati kīsa paṭhāe। sītā khoja sakala disi dhāe॥ bibara prabesa kīnh jehi bhā̃tī। kapinha bahori milā saṃpātī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
It tells how the monkey-king Sugriva sent out the monkeys, and they went in all directions in search of Sita; how they entered the cave, and then how the monkeys met Sampati.
सुनि सब कथा समीरकुमारा। नाघत भयउ पयोधि अपारा॥ लंकाँ कपि प्रबेस जिमि कीन्हा। पुनि सीतहि धीरजु जिमि दीन्हा॥ २ ॥

suni saba kathā samīrakumārā। nāghata bhayau payodhi aparā॥ laṅkā̃ kapi prabesa jimi kīnhā। puni sītahi dhīraju jimi dīnhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the whole story from Sampati, Hanuman, son of the Wind, crossed the boundless ocean; how he entered Lanka, and how he gave courage to Sita—this too is told.
बन उजारि रावनहि प्रबोधी। पुर दहि नाघेउ बहुरि पयोधी॥ आए कपि सब जहँ रघुराई। बैदेही की कुसल सुनाई॥ ३ ॥

bana ujāri rāvanahi prabodhī। pura dahi nāgheu bahuri payodhī॥ āe kapi saba jahã raghurāī। baidehī kī kusala sunāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
It tells how the Ashoka grove was destroyed, Ravana was admonished, Lanka was burned, and then the ocean was crossed again; and how all the monkeys came to where Lord Raghunath was and reported Sita's welfare.
सेन समेति जथा रघुबीरा। उतरे जाइ बारिनिधि तीरा॥ मिला बिभीषन जेहि बिधि आई। सागर निग्रह कथा सुनाई॥ ४ ॥

sena sameti jathā raghubīrā। utare jāi bārinidhi tīrā॥ milā bibhīṣana jehi bidhi āī। sāgara nigraha kathā sunāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
It tells how Lord Raghubir, together with the army, went and landed on the shore of the ocean, and how Vibhishana came and met him, and how the story of subduing the sea was told.
सेतु बाँधि कपि सेन जिमि उतरी सागर पार। गयउ बसीठी बीरबर जेहि बिधि बालिकुमार॥ ६७ (क) ॥

setu bā̃dhi kapi sena jimi utarī sāgara pāra। gayau basīṭhī vīrabara jehi bidhi bālikumāra॥ 67 (a) ॥
Meaning:
It tells how, after building the bridge, the monkey army crossed the sea, and how the foremost hero, Angada, son of Bali, went as an envoy.
निसिचर कीस लराई बरनिसि बिबिध प्रकार। कुंभकरन घननाद कर बल पौरुष संघार॥ ६७ (ख) ॥

nisichara kīsa larāī baranisi bibidha prakāra। kuṃbhakarana ghananāda kara bala pauruṣa saṃhāra॥ 67 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Then the battle between the demons and the monkeys is described in many ways, and the strength, valor, and destruction of Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are recounted.
निसिचर निकर मरन बिधि नाना। रघुपति रावन समर बखाना॥ रावन बध मंदोदरि सोका। राज बिभीषन देव असोका॥ १ ॥

nisichara nikara marana bidhi nānā। raghupati rāvana samara bakhānā॥ rāvana badha maṃdodari sokā। rāja bibhīṣana deva asokā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
It describes the deaths of the many ranks of demons and the many kinds of battles between Rama and Ravana. It tells of Ravana's death, Mandodari's sorrow, Vibhishana's coronation, and the gods' release from grief.
सीता रघुपति मिलन बहोरी। सुरन्ह कीन्हि अस्तुति कर जोरी॥ पुनि पुष्पक चढ़ि कपिन्ह समेता। अवध चले प्रभु कृपा निकेता॥ २ ॥

sītā raghupati milana bahorī। suranha kīnhi astuti kara jorī॥ puni puṣpaka caḍhi kapinha sametā। avadha cale prabhu kṛpā niketā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
It tells of Sita's reunion with Lord Raghunath. The gods offered praise with folded hands, and then the Lord, abode of grace, mounted the Pushpaka विमान with the monkeys and set out for Ayodhya.
जेहि बिधि राम नगर निज आए। बायस बिसद चरित सब गाए॥ कहेसि बहोरि राम अभिषेका। पुर बरनत नृपनीति अनेका॥ ३ ॥

It tells how Rama came to his own city; Kakabhushundi described all those pure deeds in detail. Then he spoke of Rama's coronation. [Shiva says:] describing the city of Ayodhya and many kinds of royal policy—

Bhushundi told all that story, the same story that I told you, O Bhavani. Hearing the whole Ramkatha, Garuda, lord of birds, became greatly delighted in his heart and began to speak.

I have heard all the deeds of Lord Raghunath, and my doubt has been dispelled. O crown jewel among crows, by your grace my love for Rama's feet has arisen.
मोहि भयउ अति मोह प्रभु बंधन रन महुँ निरखि। चिदानंद संदोह राम बिकल कारन कवन॥ ६८ (ख) ॥

Seeing the Lord bound by the serpent-noose in battle, I was greatly deluded, thinking: Rama is pure consciousness and bliss—what could be the reason for His distress?
देखि चरित अति नर अनुसारी। भयउ हृदयँ मम संसय भारी॥ सोइ भ्रम अब हित करि मैं माना। कीन्ह अनुग्रह कृपानिधाना॥ १ ॥

Seeing conduct exactly like that of ordinary people, a heavy doubt arose in my heart. Now I consider that very delusion to have been beneficial to me. The Ocean of Mercy has shown me great grace.
जो अति आतप ब्याकुल होई। तरु छाया सुख जानइ सोई॥ जौं नहिं होत मोह अति मोही। मिलतेउँ तात कवन बिधि तोही॥ २ ॥

Only one who is greatly troubled by the sun's heat knows the comfort of a tree's shade. O dear one, if I had not been so deluded, how could I have met you?
सुनतेउँ किमि हरि कथा सुहाई। अति बिचित्र बहु बिधि तुम्ह गाई॥ निगमागम पुरान मत एहा। कहहिं सिद्ध मुनि नहिं संदेहा॥ ३ ॥

How could I have listened to this delightful and wondrous story of Hari, sung by you in so many ways? This is the doctrine of the Vedas, Agamas, and Puranas; siddhas and sages also say the same, beyond doubt.
संत बिसुद्ध मिलहिं परि तेही। चितवहिं राम कृपा करि जेही॥ राम कृपाँ तव दरसन भयऊ। तव प्रसाद सब संसय गयऊ॥ ४ ॥

Pure saints meet only the one whom Rama, in His grace, chooses to behold. By Rama's grace I had your darshan, and by your grace all my doubts were removed.

श्रोता सुमति सुसील सुचि कथा रसिक हरिदास। पाइ उमा अति गोप्यमपि सज्जन करहिं प्रकास॥ ६९ (ख) ॥

O Uma! When noble people find a listener who is intelligent, virtuous, pure, fond of sacred कथा, and a servant of Hari, they reveal even what is most hidden.
बोलेउ काकभसुंड बहोरी। नभग नाथ पर प्रीति न थोरी॥ सब बिधि नाथ पूज्य तुम्ह मेरे। कृपापात्र रघुनायक केरे॥ १ ॥

Kakabhushundi then said: my affection for you, O lord of the birds, is no little thing—it is great. O Lord, you are worthy of my worship in every way, and are dear to Rama's grace.
तुम्हहि न संसय मोह न माया। मो पर नाथ कीन्हि तुम्ह दाया॥ पठइ मोह मिस खगपति तोही। रघुपति दीन्हि बड़ाई मोही॥ २ ॥

You have neither doubt nor delusion nor Maya. O Lord, you have shown mercy to me. O lord of birds, under the pretext of delusion, Lord Raghunath sent you here and thereby honored me.
तुम्ह निज मोह कही खगसाईं। सो नहिं कछु आचरज गोसाईं॥ नारद भव बिरंचि सनकादी। जे मुनिनायक आतमबादी॥ ३ ॥

O lord of birds, you spoke of your own delusion; O Gosain, that is no surprise. Narada, Shiva, Brahma, and Sanaka and others are all great sages who know the Self and teach its truth.
मोह न अंध कीन्ह केहि केही। को जग काम नचाव न जेही॥ तृस्नाँ केहि न कीन्ह बौराहा। केहि कर हृदय क्रोध नहिं दाहा॥ ४ ॥

मच्छर काहि कलंक न लावा। काहि न सोक समीर डोलावा॥ चिंता साँपिनि को नहिं खाया। को जग जाहि न ब्यापी माया॥ २ ॥

Whom has envy not stained? Whom has the wind of sorrow not shaken? Whom has the serpent of worry not devoured? Who in the world has not been pervaded by maya?

यह सब माया कर परिवारा। प्रबल अमिति को बरनै पारा॥ सिव चतुरानन जाहि डेराहीं। अपर जीव केहि लेखे माहीं॥ ४ ॥

The formidable army of maya has spread throughout the world. Lust and the like are its commanders, and pride, deceit, and hypocrisy are its warriors.
सो दासी रघुबीर कै समुझें मिथ्या सोपि। छूट न राम कृपा बिनु नाथ कहउँ पद रोपि॥ ७१ (ख) ॥

so dāsī raghubīra kai samujheṃ mithyā sopi। chūṭa na rāma kṛpā binu nātha kahauṃ pada ropi॥ 71 (b) ॥
Meaning:
That Maya is the servant of Raghubira. Even though it is found to be unreal when understood, it cannot be freed from without Rama’s grace. O Lord, I say this with firm conviction.
जो माया सब जगहि नचावा। जासु चरित लखि काहुँ न पावा॥ सोइ प्रभु भ्रू बिलास खगराजा। नाच नटी इव सहित समाजा॥ १ ॥

jo māyā saba jagahi nacāvā। jāsu carita lakhi kāhūṃ na pāvā॥ soi prabhu bhrū bilāsa khagarājā। nāca naṭī iva sahita samājā॥ 1 ॥

That very maya, which makes the whole world dance and whose ways no one has been able to perceive, O king of birds, dances like an actress along with her retinue at the signal of Lord Rama’s brow.
सोइ सच्चिदानंद घन रामा। अज बिग्यान रूप बल धामा॥ ब्यापक ब्याप्य अखंड अनंता। अखिल अमोघसक्ति भगवंता॥ २ ॥

soi saccidānanda ghana rāmā। aja bigyāna rūpa bala dhāmā॥ byāpaka byāpya akhaṃḍa anaṃtā। akhila amoghasakti bhagavaṃtā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
He is that very Rama, the dense embodiment of sat-cit-ananda; unborn, the form of pure knowledge, the abode of strength. He is all-pervading and yet pervaded, indivisible, endless, complete, and endowed with unfailing power; the Lord Himself.
अगुन अदभ्र गिरा गोतीता। सबदरसी अनवद्य अजीता॥ निर्मम निराकार निरमोहा। नित्य निरंजन सुख संदोहा॥ ३ ॥

aguna adabhra girā gotītā। sabadarasī anavadya ajītā॥ nirmama nirākāra niramohā। nitya niraṃjana sukha saṃdohā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
He is beyond the गुणs, vast, beyond speech and the senses, all-seeing, blameless, unconquerable, without possessiveness, formless, free from delusion, eternal, spotless, and a treasury of bliss.
प्रकृति पार प्रभु सब उर बासी। ब्रह्म निरीह बिरज अबिनासी॥ इहाँ मोह कर कारन नाहीं। रबि सन्मुख तम कबहुँ कि जाहीं॥ ४ ॥

prakṛti pāra prabhu saba ura bāsī। brahma nirīha biraja abināsī॥ ihāṃ moha kara kārana nāhīṃ। rabi sanmukha tama kabahuṃ ki jāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord is beyond प्रकृति and dwells in every heart; He is Brahman, desireless, stainless, and imperishable. There is no cause for delusion here. Can darkness ever stand before the sun?
भगत हेतु भगवान प्रभु राम धरेउ तनु भूप। किए चरित पावन परम प्राकृत नर अनुरूप॥ ७२ (क) ॥

bhagata hetu bhagavāna prabhu rāma dhareu tanu bhūpa। kie carita pāvana parama prākṛta nara anurūpa॥ 72 (a) ॥
Meaning:
For the sake of His devotees, Lord Rama assumed the body of a king and performed many supremely purifying deeds in the manner of ordinary human beings.
जथा अनेक बेष धरि नृत्य करइ नट कोइ। सोइ सोइ भाव देखावइ आपुन होइ न सोइ॥ ७२ (ख) ॥

jathā aneka beṣa dhari nṛtya karai naṭa koi। soi soi bhāva dekhāvai āpuna hoi na soi॥ 72 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Just as an actor, taking on many disguises, performs a dance and displays corresponding moods, yet does not become any of them himself.
असि रघुपति लीला उरगारी। दनुज बिमोहनि जन सुखकारी॥ जे मति मलिन बिषयबस कामी। प्रभु पर मोह धरहिं इमि स्वामी॥ १ ॥

asi raghupati līlā uragārī। danuja bimohani jana sukhakārī॥ je mati malina biṣaika basa kāmī। prabhu para moha dharahīṃ imi svāmī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Garuda, such is the sport of Raghupati: it bewilders the demons and brings joy to His devotees. O Lord, only those with impure minds, who are under the sway of the senses and are lustful, attribute such delusion to the Lord.
नयन दोष जा कहँ जब होई। पीत बरन ससि कहुँ कह सोई॥ जब जेहि दिसि भ्रम होइ खगेसा। सो कह पच्छिम उयउ दिनेसा॥ २ ॥

When a person has a defect in the eyes, he sees the moon and says it is yellow. O king of birds, when one is confused about directions, he says that the sun has risen in the west.
नौकारूढ़ चलत जग देखा। अचल मोहबस आपुहि लेखा॥ बालक भ्रमहिं न भ्रमहिं गृहादी। कहहिं परस्पर मिथ्याबादी॥ ३ ॥

A person riding in a boat sees the world as moving, while under delusion he thinks himself motionless. Children think the house and so on are moving, not themselves; and they call one another liars.
हरि बिषइक अस मोह बिहंगा। सपनेहुँ नहिं अग्यान प्रसंगा॥ मायाबस मतिमंद अभागी। हृदयँ जमनिका बहुबिधि लागी॥ ४ ॥

काम क्रोध मद लोभ रत गृहासक्त दुखरूप। ते किमि जानहिं रघुपतिहि मूढ़ परे तम कूप॥ ७३ (क) ॥

How can those devoted to lust, anger, pride, and greed, and attached to the sorrowful life of the household, know Raghupati? Those fools lie fallen in the well of darkness.
निर्गुन रूप सुलभ अति सगुन जान नहिं कोइ। सुगम अगम नाना चरित सुनि मुनि मन भ्रम होइ॥ ७३ (ख) ॥

nirguna rūpa sulabha ati saguna jāna nahiṃ koi। sugama agama nānā carita suni muni mana bhrama hoi॥ 73 (b) ॥
Meaning:
The formless, attributeless aspect is extremely easy to grasp, but no one truly knows the divine personal form. Therefore, hearing His many deeds, both simple and profound, even sages are left with confusion in the mind.
सुनु खगेस रघुपति प्रभुताई। कहउँ जथामति कथा सुहाई॥ जेहि बिधि मोह भयउ प्रभु मोही। सोउ सब कथा सुनावउँ तोही॥ १ ॥

Listen, O king of birds, to the majesty of Raghupati. I shall recount a pleasing story according to my understanding. O Lord, I shall also tell you the whole account of how delusion came upon me.

Hear Rama’s natural disposition: He does not allow pride to remain in His devotee. Pride is the root of the world of birth and death; it brings forth many kinds of suffering and all sorrow.

Although the child initially suffers and cries in distress, for the sake of destroying the disease the mother does not count that pain at all.

Then again and again I go to Ayodhya and rejoice in seeing His childhood pastimes. There I go to witness the birth festival, and, captivated by the Lord’s infant play, I remain there for five years.

If beings were to remain in one undivided consciousness, then tell me, what distinction would there be between God and the soul? The proud soul is under maya’s control, and maya, the source of the three qualities—sattva, rajas, and tamas—is under God’s control.
परबस जीव स्वबस भगवंता। जीव अनेक एक श्रीकंता॥ मुधा भेद जद्यपि कृत माया। बिनु हरि जाइ न कोटि उपाया॥ ४ ॥

Even if the moon, complete with its sixteen phases, were to rise together with the host of stars, and if fire were set to all the mountains, night would still not pass without the rising of the sun.

No one knew the meaning of that play—not even the younger brothers, nor even the parents. The dark-bodied child, with red palms and red feet, ran toward me on his knees and hands to catch me.

Passing beyond the seven coverings, I went as far as my movement could take me. But there too, seeing the Lord's arm behind me, I became agitated again.

एक एक ब्रह्मांड महुँ रहउँ बरष सत एक। एहि बिधि देखत फिरउँ मैं अंड कटाह अनेक॥ ८० (ख) ॥

eka eka brahmāṇḍa mahuṃ rahauṃ baraṣa sata eka। ehi bidhi dekhata phirauṃ maiṃ aṃḍa kaṭāha aneka॥ 80 (b) ॥
Meaning:
In one universe I stayed for a hundred years at a time. In this way I kept wandering among many cosmic shells.
लोक लोक प्रति भिन्न बिधाता। भिन्न बिष्नु सिव मनु दिसित्राता॥ नर गंधर्ब भूत बेताला। किंनर निसिचर पसु खग ब्याला॥ १ ॥

loka loka prati bhinna bidhātā। bhinna biṣṇu siva manu disitrātā॥ nara gaṃdharba bhūta betālā। kinnara nisicara pasu khaga byālā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
In each world there was a different Brahmā, a different Vishnu, Shiva, Manu, and guardians of the directions; humans, gandharvas, ghosts, bhūtas, vetālas, kinnars, demons, animals, birds, and serpents.
देव दनुज गन नाना जाती। सकल जीव तहँ आनहि भाँती॥ महि सरि सागर सर गिरि नाना। सब प्रपंच तहँ आनइ आना॥ २ ॥

deva danuja gana nānā jātī। sakala jīva tahaṃ ānahi bhāṃtī॥ mahi sari sāgara sara giri nānā। saba prapaṃca tahaṃ ānai ānā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
There were gods and demons of many kinds. All beings there were of another sort. Many earths, rivers, oceans, lakes, mountains, and the whole expanse of creation were all there in different forms.
अंडकोस प्रति प्रति निज रूपा। देखेउँ जिनस अनेक अनूपा॥ अवधपुरी प्रति भुवन निनारी। सरजू भिन्न भिन्न नर नारी॥ ३ ॥

aṃḍakosa prati prati nija rūpā। dekheuṃ jinas aneka anūpā॥ avadhapurī prati bhuvana ninārī। sarajū bhinna bhinna nara nārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
In each egg-shaped cosmos I saw my own form and many unmatched wonders. In each world there was a different Ayodhya, a different Sarayu, and different men and women.
दसरथ कौसल्या सुनु ताता। बिबिध रूप भरतादिक भ्राता॥ प्रति ब्रह्मांड राम अवतारा। देखउँ बालबिनोद अपारा॥ ४ ॥

dasaratha kausalyā sunu tātā। bibidha rūpa bharatādika bhrātā॥ prati brahmāṇḍa rāma avatārā। dekhauṃ bālabinoda apārā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Listen, O fatherly one: Dasaratha, Kaushalya, and Bharata and the other brothers were all in different forms. In each universe I beheld Rama's descent and His boundless childhood sports.
भिन्न भिन्न मैं दीख सबु अति बिचित्र हरिजान। अगनित भुवन फिरेउँ प्रभु राम न देखेउँ आन॥ ८१ (क) ॥

bhinna bhinna maiṃ dīkha sabu ati bicitra harijāna। aganita bhuvana phireuṃ prabhu rāma na dekheuṃ āna॥ 81 (a) ॥
Meaning:
I saw all things as different and most wondrous, O beloved of Hari. I wandered through countless worlds, yet I did not see Lord Rama in any other form.
सोइ सिसुपन सोइ सोभा सोइ कृपाल रघुबीर। भुवन भुवन देखत फिरउँ प्रेरित मोह समीर॥ ८१ (ख) ॥

soi sisupana soi sobhā soi kṛpāla raghubīra। bhuvana bhuvana dekhata phirauṃ prerita moha samīra॥ 81 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Everywhere the same childhood, the same beauty, the same merciful Raghuvir! Thus, by the prompting of the wind of delusion, I kept wandering from world to world.
भ्रमत मोहि ब्रह्मांड अनेका। बीते मनहुँ कल्प सत एका॥ फिरत फिरत निज आश्रम आयउँ। तहँ पुनि रहि कछु काल गवाँयउँ॥ १ ॥

bhramata mohi brahmāṇḍa anekā। bīte manahuṃ kalpa sata ekā॥ phirata phirata nija āśrama āyauṃ। tahaṃ puni rahi kachu kāla gavāṃyauṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Wandering through many universes, it seemed as though a hundred ages had passed. Wandering on and on, I returned to my own hermitage and spent some time there.
निज प्रभु जन्म अवध सुनि पायउँ। निर्भर प्रेम हरषि उठि धायउँ॥ देखउँ जन्म महोत्सव जाई। जेहि बिधि प्रथम कहा मैं गाई॥ २ ॥

nija prabhu janma avadha suni pāyauṃ। nirbhara prema haraṣi uṭhi dhāyauṃ॥ dekhauṃ janma mahotsava jāī। jehi bidhi prathama kahā maiṃ gāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then, when I heard that my Lord had taken birth in Ayodhya, I was filled with overwhelming love and ran in joy. I went to see the birth-festival, just as I had described earlier in song.
राम उदर देखेउँ जग नाना। देखत बनइ न जाइ बखाना॥ तहँ पुनि देखेउँ राम सुजाना। माया पति कृपाल भगवाना॥ ३ ॥

rāma udara dekheuṃ jaga nānā। dekhata banai na jāi bakhānā॥ tahaṃ puni dekheuṃ rāma sujānā। māyā pati kṛpāla bhagavānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
In Rama's belly I saw countless worlds—unbelievable to behold, beyond description. There I again saw the wise Lord Rama, the master of illusion, the compassionate Lord.
करउँ बिचार बहोरि बहोरी। मोह कलिल ब्यापित मति मोरी॥ उभय घरी महँ मैं सब देखा। भयउँ भ्रमित मन मोह बिसेषा॥ ४ ॥

karauṃ bicāra bahori bahorī। moha kalila byāpita mati morī॥ ubhaya gharī mahaṃ maiṃ saba dekhā। bhayauṃ bhramita mana moha biseṣā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Again and again I reflected. My intellect was covered by the mire of delusion. In the space of just two watches I saw all this, and my mind became especially bewildered.
देखि कृपाल बिकल मोहि बिहँसे तब रघुबीर। बिहँसतहीं मुख बाहेर आयउँ सुनु मतिधीर॥ ८२ (क) ॥

dekhī kṛpāla bikala mohi bihaṃse taba raghubīra। bihaṃsatahīṃ mukha bāhera āyauṃ sunu matidhīra॥ 82 (a) ॥

Seeing me agitated, the compassionate Raghuvir then smiled. Listen, O clear-minded one: as soon as He laughed, I came out through His mouth.
सोइ लरिकाई मो सन करन लगे पुनि राम। कोटि भाँति समुझावउँ मनु न लहइ बिश्राम॥ ८२ (ख) ॥

soi larikāī mo sana karana lage puni rāma। koṭi bhāṃti samujhāvauṃ manu na lahai biśrāma॥ 82 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Rama again began to play the same childhood pranks with me. I kept explaining to my mind in millions of ways, but it did not find rest.
देखि चरित यह सो प्रभुताई। समुझत देह दसा बिसराई॥ धरनि परेउँ मुख आव न बाता। त्राहि त्राहि आरत जन त्राता॥ १ ॥

dekhi carita yaha so prabhutāī। samujhata deha dasā bisarāī॥ dharani pareuṃ mukha āva na bātā। trāhi trāhi ārata jana trātā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing this divine play, and recalling that majesty [seen within the womb], I forgot the condition of my body and fell to the ground, crying, 'Protect me, protect me, O savior of the afflicted!' No words could come from my mouth.
प्रेमाकुल प्रभु मोहि बिलोकी। निज माया प्रभुता तब रोकी॥ कर सरोज प्रभु मम सिर धरेऊ। दीनदयाल सकल दुख हरेऊ॥ २ ॥

premākula prabhu mohi bilokī। nija māyā prabhutā taba rokī॥ kara saroja prabhu mama sira dhareū। dīnadayāla sakala dukha hareū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then the Lord, seeing me overwhelmed with love, restrained the power of His illusion. The Lord placed His lotus hand on my head. The Compassionate One removed all my sorrow.
कीन्ह राम मोहि बिगत बिमोहा। सेवक सुखद कृपा संदोहा॥ प्रभुता प्रथम बिचारि बिचारी। मन महँ होइ हरष अति भारी॥ ३ ॥

kīna rāma mohi bigata bimohā। sevaka sukhada kṛpā sandohā॥ prabhutā prathama bicāri bicārī। mana mahaṃ hoi haraṣa ati bhārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Rama made me utterly free from delusion, for He is a giver of joy to His servants and an abundance of grace. Thinking again and again of His former majesty, great joy rose in my heart.
भगत बछलता प्रभु कै देखी। उपजी मम उर प्रीति बिसेषी॥ सजल नयन पुलकित कर जोरी। कीन्हिउँ बहु बिधि बिनय बहोरी॥ ४ ॥

bhagata bachalatā prabhu kai dekhī। upajī mama ura prīti biseṣī॥ sajala nayana pulakita kara jorī। kīnhiuṃ bahu bidhi binaya bahorī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the Lord's affection for His devotees, deep love arose in my heart. Then I filled my eyes with tears, became thrilled, joined my hands, and prayed to Him in many ways again and again.
सुनि सप्रेम मम बानी देखि दीन निज दास। बचन सुखद गंभीर मृदु बोले रमानिवास॥ ८३ (क) ॥

suni saprema mama bānī dekhi dīna nija dāsa। bacana sukhada gambhīra mr̥du bole ramānivāsa॥ 83 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Hearing my loving words and seeing His servant in distress, Rama, the abode of Lakshmi, spoke sweet, grave, and gentle words.
काकभसुंडि मागु बर अति प्रसन्न मोहि जानि। अनिमादिक सिधि अपर रिधि मोच्छ सकल सुख खानि॥ ८३ (ख) ॥

kākabhasuṃḍi māgu bara ati prasanna mohi jāni। animādika sidhi apara ridhi moccha sakala sukha khāni॥ 83 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O Kākabhusundi, ask for a boon, knowing Me to be greatly pleased. Ask for the siddhis beginning with anima, other powers, liberation, and the mine of all happiness.
ग्यान बिबेक बिरति बिग्याना। मुनि दुर्लभ गुन जे जग नाना॥ आजु देउँ सब संसय नाहीं। मागु जो तोहि भाव मन माहीं॥ १ ॥

gyāna bibeka birati bigyānā। muni durlabha guna je jaga nānā॥ aju deūṃ saba saṃsaya nāhīṃ। māgu jo tohi bhāva mana māhīṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Knowledge, discernment, detachment, wisdom, and all the many qualities that are hard even for sages to obtain in the world—I shall give them all to you today, without doubt. Ask for whatever pleases your heart.
सुनि प्रभु बचन अधिक अनुरागेउँ। मन अनुमान करन तब लागेउँ॥ प्रभु कह देन सकल सुख सही। भगति आपनी देन न कही॥ २ ॥

suni prabhu bacana adhika anurāgeūṃ। mana anumāna karana taba lāgeūṃ॥ prabhu kaha dena sakala sukha sahī। bhagati āpanī dena na kahī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the Lord's words, I became deeply filled with love. Then I began to reason in my mind: the Lord said He would give all joys—that is surely true; but He did not say He would give His own devotion.
भगति हीन गुन सब सुख ऐसे। लवन बिना बहु बिंजन जैसे॥ भजन हीन सुख कवने काजा। अस बिचारि बोलेउँ खगराजा॥ ३ ॥

bhagati hīna guna saba sukha aise। lavana binā bahu biṃjana jaise॥ bhajana hīna sukha kavane kājā। asa bicāri boleuṃ khagarājā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Without devotion, all virtues and all joys are like many dishes without salt. What use is happiness without worship? Thinking thus, I spoke, O king of birds.
जौं प्रभु होइ प्रसन्न बर देहू। मो पर करहु कृपा अरु नेहू॥ मन भावत बर मागउँ स्वामी। तुम्ह उदार उर अंतरजामी॥ ४ ॥

joṃ prabhu hoi prasanna bara dehū। mo para karahu kṛpā aru nehū॥ mana bhāvata bara māgauṃ svāmī। tumha udāra ura antarayāmī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, if You are pleased to grant me a boon and show me grace and affection, then, O Master, I ask for the boon my heart desires. You are generous and the knower of all hearts within.
अबिरल भगति बिसुद्ध तव श्रुति पुरान जो गाव। जेहि खोजत जोगीस मुनि प्रभु प्रसाद कोउ पाव॥ ८४ (क) ॥

abirala bhagati bisuddha tava śruti purāna jo gāvai। jehi khojata jogīsa muni prabhu prasāda kou pāva॥ 84 (a) ॥
Meaning:
That uninterrupted and pure devotion of Yours, which the Vedas and Puranas sing, which even yogic sages seek, and which only a rare one obtains by the Lord's grace—that devotion I ask for.
भगत कल्पतरु प्रनत हित कृपा सिंधु सुख धाम। सोइ निज भगति मोहि प्रभु देहु दया करि राम॥ ८४ (ख) ॥

bhagata kalpataru pranata hita kṛpā siṃdhu sukha dhāma। soi nija bhagati mohi prabhu dehu dayā kari rāma॥ 84 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O wish-fulfilling tree for devotees, benefactor of the surrendered, ocean of compassion, abode of bliss, Lord Rama—out of mercy, grant me that very devotion of Yours.
एवमस्तु कहि रघुकुलनायक। बोले बचन परम सुखदायक॥ सुनु बायस तैं सहज सयाना। काहे न मागसि अस बरदाना॥ १ ॥

evamastu kahi raghukulanāyaka। bole bacana parama sukhadāyaka॥ sunu bāyasa taiṃ sahaja sayānā। kāhe na māgasi asa baradānā॥ 1 ॥

Saying, 'So be it,' the Lord of the Raghu line spoke most pleasing words: 'Listen, crow, you are naturally wise. Why would you not ask for such a boon?'
सब सुख खानि भगति तैं मागी। नहिं जग कोउ तोहि सम बड़भागी॥ जो मुनि कोटि जतन नहिं लहहीं। जे जप जोग अनल तन दहहीं॥ २ ॥

saba sukha khāni bhagati taiṃ māgī। nahiṃ jaga kou tohi sama baḍabhāgī॥ jo muni koṭi jatana nahiṃ lahahīṃ। je japa joga anala tana dahahīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
You have asked for devotion, the storehouse of all happiness; in the world there is no one as fortunate as you. Those sages who keep burning the body in the fire of japa and yoga do not attain it, even after countless efforts.
रीझेउँ देखि तोरि चतुराई। मागेहु भगति मोहि अति भाई॥ सुनु बिहंग प्रसाद अब मोरें। सब सुभ गुन बसिहहिं उर तोरें॥ ३ ॥

rījheuṃ dekhi tori caturāī। māgēhu bhagati mohi ati bhāī॥ sunu bihaṃga prasāda aba moreṃ। saba subha guna basihahim ura torẹṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing your cleverness, I was pleased. Asking for devotion is what I liked best. Listen, bird: by My grace all auspicious qualities will now dwell in your heart.
भगति ग्यान बिग्यान बिरागा। जोग चरित्र रहस्य बिभागा॥ जानब तैं सबही कर भेदा। मम प्रसाद नहिं साधन खेदा॥ ४ ॥

bhagati gyāna bigyāna birāgā। joga carita rahasya bibhāgā॥ jānaba taiṃ sabahī kara bhedā। mama prasāda nahiṃ sādhana khedā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
By My grace, you will know the distinctions of devotion, knowledge, realization, detachment, yoga, My deeds, and their secrets and divisions. You will not have the weariness of spiritual practice.
माया संभव भ्रम सब अब न ब्यापिहहिं तोहि। जानेसु ब्रह्म अनादि अज अगुन गुनाकर मोहि॥ ८५ (क) ॥

māyā saṃbhava bhrama saba aba na byāpihahim tohi। jānesu brahma anādi aja aguna gunākara mohi॥ 85 (a) ॥
Meaning:
All delusions born of Maya will no longer affect you. Know Me as the beginningless, unborn, attributeless Brahman, the storehouse of all virtues.
मोहि भगत प्रिय संतत अस बिचारि सुनु काग। कायँ बचन मन मम पद करेसु अचल अनुराग॥ ८५ (ख) ॥

mohi bhagata priya santaṭa asa bicāri sunu kāga। kāyaṃ bacana mana mama pada karesu acala anurāga॥ 85 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Listen, crow: since devotees are ever dear to Me, keep steadfast love for My feet in body, speech, and mind.
अब सुनु परम बिमल मम बानी। सत्य सुगम निगमादि बखानी॥ निज सिद्धांत सुनावउँ तोही। सुनु मन धरु सब तजि भजु मोही॥ १ ॥

aba sunu parama bimala mama bānī। satya sugama nigamādi bakhānī॥ nija siddhānta sunāvaūṃ tohī। sunu mana dharu saba taji bhaju mohī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Now hear My supremely pure, true, and easy teaching, praised in the Vedas and other scriptures. I shall tell you My own सिद्धान्त; listen, hold it in your mind, and renounce everything else to worship Me.
मम माया संभव संसारा। जीव चराचर बिबिधि प्रकारा॥ सब मम प्रिय सब मम उपजाए। सब ते अधिक मनुज मोहि भाए॥ २ ॥

mama māyā saṃbhava saṃsārā। jīva carācara bibidhi prakārā॥ saba mama priya saba mama upajāe। saba te adhika manuja mohi bhāe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
This entire world is born of My Maya. It contains living beings of many kinds, moving and unmoving. All are dear to Me, for all have been created by Me; yet human beings are dearest to Me.
तिन्ह महँ द्विज द्विज महँ श्रुतिधारी। तिन्ह महुँ निगम धरम अनुसारी॥ तिन्ह महँ प्रिय बिरक्त पुनि ग्यानी। ग्यानिहु ते अति प्रिय बिग्यानी॥ ३ ॥

tinha mahaṃ dvija dvija mahaṃ śrutidhārī। tinha mahaṃ nigama dharama anusārī॥ tinha mahaṃ priya birakta puni gyānī। gyānihu te ati priya bigyānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Among them, the twice-born are dear; among the twice-born, those who bear the Vedas; among them, those who follow the Vedic law. Among the detached, the wise are dear to Me, and among the wise, the truly enlightened are even dearer.
तिन्ह ते पुनि मोहि प्रिय निज दासा। जेहि गति मोरि न दूसरि आसा॥ पुनि पुनि सत्य कहउँ तोहि पाहीं। मोहि सेवक सम प्रिय कोउ नाहीं॥ ४ ॥

tinha te puni mohi priya nija dāsā। jehi gati mori na dūsari āsā॥ puni puni satya kahauṃ tohi pāhīṃ। mohi sevaka sama priya kou nāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Among them again, My own servant is dearest to Me—the one who has no other refuge than Me. I tell you the truth again and again: none is dear to Me like My servant.
भगति हीन बिरंचि किन होई। सब जीवहु सम प्रिय मोहि सोई॥ भगतिवंत अति नीचउ प्रानी। मोहि प्रानप्रिय असि मम बानी॥ ५ ॥

bhagati hīna birañci kina hoi। saba jīvahu sama priya mohi soī॥ bhagativaṃta ati nīcaū prānī। mohi prānapriya asi mama bānī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Even Brahma without devotion—why should he not be dear to Me? He is dear to Me, like all beings. But even a devotee of very low birth is as dear to Me as life itself; this is My word.
सुचि सुसील सेवक सुमति प्रिय कहु काहि न लाग। श्रुति पुरान कह नीति असि सावधान सुनु काग॥ ८६ ॥

suci susīla sevaka sumati priya kahu kāhi na lāga। śruti purāna kaha nīti asi sāvadāna sunu kāga॥ 86 ॥
Meaning:
A pure, virtuous, and wise servant—tell me, who would not love such a one? The Vedas and Puranas teach this very principle. Listen carefully, crow.
एक पिता के बिपुल कुमारा। होहिं पृथक गुन सील अचारा॥ कोउ पंडित कोउ तापस ग्याता। कोउ धनवंत सूर कोउ दाता॥ १ ॥

eka pitā ke bipula kumārā। hohiṃ pṛthaka guna sīla acārā॥ kou paṇḍita kou tāpasa gyātā। kou dhanavanta sūra kou dātā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
A single father may have many sons, each with distinct qualities, temperament, and conduct. Some are learned, some ascetics, some wise, some wealthy, some brave, and some charitable.
कोउ सर्बग्य धर्मरत कोई। सब पर पितहि प्रीति सम होई॥ कोउ पितु भगत बचन मन कर्मा। सपनेहुँ जान न दूसर धर्मा॥ २ ॥

kou sarbagya dharmarata koī। saba para pitahi prīti sama hoī॥ kou pitu bhagata bacana mana karmā। sapanēhuṃ jāna na dūsara dharmā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Some are omniscient, others devoted to righteousness. A father’s affection is equal toward all of them. But among them, whoever is devoted to the father alone in thought, word, and deed, and does not even dream of any other duty or allegiance, is especially dear.
सो सुत प्रिय पितु प्रान समाना। जद्यपि सो सब भाँति अयाना॥ एहि बिधि जीव चराचर जेते। त्रिजग देव नर असुर समेते॥ ३ ॥

so suta priya pitu prāna samānā। jadyapi so saba bhāṃti ayānā॥ ehi bidhi jīva carācara jete। trijaga deva nara asura samete॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
That son is dear to the father as life itself, even if he is ignorant in every way. In this manner, all beings of the three worlds—gods, humans, and demons, along with all moving and unmoving creatures—
अखिल बिस्व यह मोर उपाया। सब पर मोहि बराबरि दाया॥ तिन्ह महँ जो परिहरि मद माया। भजै मोहि मन बच अरु काया॥ ४ ॥

akhila bisva yaha mora upāyā। saba para mohi barābari dāyā॥ tinha mahaṃ jo parihari mada māyā। bhajai mohi mana baca aru kāyā॥ 4 ॥

This entire universe is created by Me; therefore My compassion is equal toward all. But among them, whoever renounces pride and illusion and worships Me with mind, speech, and body,
पुरुष नपुंसक नारि वा जीव चराचर कोइ। सर्ब भाव भज कपट तजि मोहि परम प्रिय सोइ॥ ८७ (क) ॥

puruṣa napuṃsaka nāri vā jīva carācara koi। sarba bhāva bhaja kapaṭa taji mohi parama priya soi॥ 87 (a) ॥

Whether one is a man, a eunuch, a woman, or any moving or unmoving being, whoever worships Me with all sincerity, abandoning deceit, is exceedingly dear to Me.
सत्य कहउँ खग तोहि सुचि सेवक मम प्रानप्रिय। अस बिचारि भजु मोहि परिहरि आस भरोस सब॥ ८७ (ख) ॥

satya kahauṃ khaga tohi suci sevaka mama prānapriya। asa bicāri bhaju mohi parihari āsa bharosa saba॥ 87 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O bird, I tell you the truth: a pure servant, devoted exclusively and selflessly, is dear to Me as life itself. Thinking thus, abandon all hopes and reliance on others, and worship Me.
कबहूँ काल न ब्यापिहि तोही। सुमिरेसु भजेसु निरंतर मोही॥ प्रभु बचनामृत सुनि न अघाऊँ। तनु पुलकित मन अति हरषाऊँ॥ १ ॥

kabahūṃ kāla na byāpihi tohī। sumiresu bhajesu nirantara mohī॥ prabhu bacanāmṛta suni na aghāūṃ। tanu pulakita mana ati haraṣāūṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Death will never overtake you if you constantly remember and worship Me. Hearing the nectar-like words of the Lord, I was never satisfied; my body thrilled, and my mind became greatly delighted.
सो सुख जानइ मन अरु काना। नहिं रसना पहिं जाइ बखाना॥ प्रभु सोभा सुख जानहिं नयना। कहि किमि सकहिं तिन्हहि नहिं बयना॥ २ ॥

so sukha jāna'i mana aru kānā। nahiṃ rasanā pahiṃ jāi bakhānā॥ prabhu sobhā sukha jānahiṃ nayanā। kahi kimi sakahiṃ tinhahi nahiṃ bayanā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
That bliss is known only to the mind and the ears; the tongue cannot describe it. The eyes alone know the bliss of the Lord’s beauty. How could they speak of it? They have no voice.
बहु बिधि मोहि प्रबोधि सुख देई। लगे करन सिसु कौतुक तेई॥ सजल नयन कछु मुख करि रूखा। चितइ मातु लागी अति भूखा॥ ३ ॥

bahu bidhi mohi prabodhi sukha deī। lage karana sisu kautuka tēī॥ sajala nayana kachu mukha kari rūkha। cita'i mātu lāgī ati bhūkhā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
After gently instructing me in many ways and giving me joy, the Lord then resumed the playful tricks of a child. Filling His eyes with tears and making His face look somewhat stern, He looked toward His mother—signaling by His expression that He was very hungry.
देखि मातु आतुर उठि धाई। कहि मृदु बचन लिए उर लाई॥ गोद राखि कराव पय पाना। रघुपति चरित ललित कर गाना॥ ४ ॥

dekhi mātu ātura uṭhi dhāī। kahi mṛdu bacana lie ura lāī॥ goda rākhi karāva paya pānā। raghupati carita lalita kara gānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing this, the mother immediately rose and hurried to Him. Speaking sweetly, she embraced Shri Ram and took Him to her heart. Holding Him in her lap, she fed Him milk and began singing the beautiful deeds of Shri Raghunath.
जेहि सुख लागि पुरारि असुभ बेष कृत सिव सुखद। अवधपुरी नर नारि तेहि सुख महुँ संतत मगन॥ ८८ (क) ॥

jehi sukha lāgi purāri asubha beṣa kṛta siva sukhada। avadhapurī nara nāri tehi sukha mahaṃ santata magana॥ 88 (a) ॥
Meaning:
For the sake of that bliss, Tripurari Shiva, the bestower of all well-being, assumed an inauspicious disguise. In that very bliss, the men and women of Ayodhya remain constantly immersed.
सोई सुख लवलेस जिन्ह बारक सपनेहुँ लहेउ। ते नहिं गनहिं खगेस ब्रह्मसुखहि सज्जन सुमति॥ ८८ (ख) ॥

soī sukha lavalesa jinha bāraka sapanēhuṃ laheu। te nahiṃ ganahiṃ khagesa brahmasukhahi sajjana sumati॥ 88 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Those who have even once obtained a tiny trace of that bliss, even in a dream, O king of birds, do not count even Brahma’s bliss as anything before it; such are the noble-minded wise.
मैं पुनि अवध रहेउँ कछु काला। देखेउँ बालबिनोद रसाला॥ राम प्रसाद भगति बर पायउँ। प्रभु पद बंदि निजाश्रम आयउँ॥ १ ॥

Meaning:
I then remained in Ayodhya for some time and witnessed Shri Ram’s delightful childhood sports. By Shri Ram’s grace, I received the boon of devotion. Thereafter, bowing at the Lord’s feet, I returned to my own hermitage.
तब ते मोहि न ब्यापी माया। जब ते रघुनायक अपनाया॥ यह सब गुप्त चरित मैं गावा। हरि मायाँ जिमि मोहि नचावा॥ २ ॥

Since the time Shri Raghunath accepted me, illusion has never overcome me. All these hidden events I have described—how Hari’s maya made me dance as it pleased.
निज अनुभव अब कहउँ खगेसा। बिनु हरि भजन न जाहिं कलेसा॥ राम कृपा बिनु सुनु खगराई। जानि न जाइ राम प्रभुताई॥ ३ ॥

O king of birds Garuda, now I will tell you my own experience: without devotion to Hari, sufferings do not end. Listen, O lord of birds: without Rama’s grace, Rama’s greatness cannot be known.
जानें बिनु न होइ परतीती। बिनु परतीति होइ नहिं प्रीती॥ प्रीति बिना नहिं भगति दिढ़ाई। जिमि खगपति जल कै चिकनाई॥ ४ ॥

O dear one, without natural contentment, can anyone attain rest? Even if one struggles and wears oneself out with millions of efforts, can a boat ever move without water?
बिनु संतोष न काम नसाहीं। काम अछत सुख सपनेहुँ नाहीं॥ राम भजन बिनु मिटहिं कि कामा। थल बिहीन तरु कबहुँ कि जामा॥ १ ॥

Without contentment, desire cannot be destroyed, and as long as desire remains, there can be no happiness even in a dream. Can desires ever be removed without devotion to Shri Ram? Can a tree grow anywhere without soil?

Without faith there is no devotion; without devotion, Shri Ram does not soften toward one; and without Shri Ram’s grace, the soul finds no rest even in a dream.

Reflecting thus, O steadfast-minded one, cast aside all sophistry and doubt, and worship Rama, Raghubir, the compassionate, beautiful, and bliss-giving Lord.

महिमा नाम रूप गुन गाथा। सकल अमित अनंत रघुनाथा॥ निज निज मति मुनि हरि गुन गावहिं। निगम सेष सिव पार न पावहिं॥ २ ॥

mahimā nāma rūpa guna gāthā। sakala amita ananta raghunāthā॥ nija nija mati muni hari guna gāvahiṃ। nigama seṣa siva pāra na pāvahiṃ॥ 2 ॥

The glory, name, form, and qualities of Lord Raghunatha are all boundless and endless, and Lord Raghunatha Himself is endless. The sages sing the qualities of Hari according to their own understanding. Even the Vedas, Shesha, and Shiva cannot reach their end.
तुम्हहि आदि खग मसक प्रजंता। नभ उड़ाहिं नहिं पावहिं अंता॥ तिमि रघुपति महिमा अवगाहा। तात कबहुँ कोउ पाव कि थाहा॥ ३ ॥

From you down to the mosquito, all beings great and small fly in the sky, yet none can reach its end. Likewise, O father, the glory of Lord Raghupati is unfathomable. Can anyone ever measure its depth?

He has immense strength like countless crores of winds, and radiance like countless crores of suns. He is as cooling as countless crores of moons, and he removes all the fears of the world.

Lord Raghubir is immovable like countless crores of Himalayas and deep like countless crores of oceans. The Lord bestows all desired blessings like countless crores of celestial cows, Kamadhenus.
सारद कोटि अमित चतुराई। बिधि सत कोटि सृष्टि निपुनाई॥ बिष्नु कोटि सम पालन कर्ता। रुद्र कोटि सत सम संहर्ता॥ ३ ॥

He has the skill of countless crores of Saraswatis. He has the creative mastery of countless crores of Brahmas. He is the preserver like countless crores of Vishnus and the destroyer like countless crores of Rudras.
धनद कोटि सत सम धनवाना। माया कोटि प्रपंच निधाना॥ भार धरन सत कोटि अहीसा। निरवधि निरुपम प्रभु जगदीसा॥ ४ ॥

dhanada koṭi sata sama dhanavānā। māyā koṭi prapaṃca nidhānā॥ bhāra dharana sata koṭi ahīsā। niravadhi nirupama prabhu jagadīsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He is as wealthy as countless crores of Kuberas and, like countless crores of forms of Maya, is the treasure-house of the universe. In bearing burdens He is like countless crores of Sheshas. What more can be said? Lord Jagadisha, Shri Rama, is without limit and without comparison in every respect.
निरुपम न उपमा आन राम समान रामु निगम कहै। जिमि कोटि सत खद्योत सम रबि कहत अति लघुता लहै॥ एहि भाँति निज निज मति बिलास मुनीस हरिहि बखानहीं। प्रभु भाव गाहक अति कृपाल सप्रेम सुनि सुख मानहीं॥

nirupama na upamā āna rāma samāna rāmu nigama kahai। jimi koṭi sata khadyota sama rabi kahata ati laghutā lahai॥ ehi bhāṃti nija nija mati bilāsa munīsa harihi bakhānahīṃ। prabhu bhāva gāhaka ati kṛpāla saprema suni sukha mānahīṃ॥
Meaning:
Lord Rama is incomparable; there is no other likeness to Him. The Vedas say that Rama alone is like Rama. Just as saying that the sun is like countless crores of fireflies only diminishes the greatness of the sun, in the same way the sages describe Hari according to the range of their own understanding. But the Lord is extremely compassionate and accepts the devotion in the heart. He listens to such praise with love and feels joy.
रामु अमित गुन सागर थाह कि पावइ कोइ। संतन्ह सन जस किछु सुनेउँ तुम्हहि सुनायउँ सोइ॥ ९२ (क) ॥

rāmu amita guna sāgara thāha ki pāvai koi। saṃtanha sana jasa kichhu suneuṃ tumhahi sunāyaūṃ soi॥ 92 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Rama is an ocean of countless virtues; who can ever sound His depth? Whatever I heard from the saints, I have told you the same.
भाव बस्य भगवान सुख निधान करुना भवन। तजि ममता मद मान भजिअ सदा सीतारवन॥ ९२ (ख) ॥

bhāva basya bhagavāna sukha nidhāna karuṇā bhavana। taji mamatā mada māna bhajia sadā sītāravana॥ 92 (b) ॥
Meaning:
The Lord, the storehouse of bliss and abode of compassion, is subject to loving devotion. Therefore, giving up attachment, pride, and vanity, one should always worship Shri Janakinath.
सुनि भुसुंडि के बचन सुहाए। हरषित खगपति पंख फुलाए॥ नयन नीर मन अति हरषाना। श्रीरघुपति प्रताप उर आना॥ १ ॥

Hearing the lovely words of Bhushundi, the king of birds became delighted and spread his wings. Tears of joy came to his eyes, and his mind was filled with great happiness. He brought the glory of Shri Raghupati into his heart.
पाछिल मोह समुझि पछिताना। ब्रह्म अनादि मनुज करि माना॥ पुनि पुनि काग चरन सिरु नावा। जानि राम सम प्रेम बढ़ावा॥ २ ॥

pāchila moha samujhi pachitānā। brahma anādi manuja kari mānā॥ puni puni kāga carana siru nāvā। jāni rāma sama prema baḍhāvā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Reflecting on his former delusion, he repented, saying, 'I regarded the beginningless Brahman as a mere human being.' Again and again Garuda bowed his head at the feet of Kakabhushundi and, knowing him to be equal to Rama, deepened his love.
गुर बिनु भव निधि तरइ न कोई। जौं बिरंचि संकर सम होई॥ संसय सर्प ग्रसेउ मोहि ताता। दुखद लहरि कुतर्क बहु ब्राता॥ ३ ॥

Without a guru, no one can cross the ocean of worldly existence, even if one were equal to Brahma or Shankara. Garuda said: 'O father, the serpent of doubt had swallowed me, and many waves of painful false reasoning were rising within me.'
तव सरूप गारुड़ि रघुनायक। मोहि जिआयउ जन सुखदायक॥ तव प्रसाद मम मोह नसाना। राम रहस्य अनूपम जाना॥ ४ ॥

Through your form as a Garudi remedy for snake-poison, Lord Raghunatha, the giver of joy to His devotees, gave me new life. By your grace my delusion was destroyed, and I came to know Rama's incomparable mystery.
ताहि प्रसंसि बिबिधि बिधि सीस नाइ कर जोरि। बचन बिनीत सप्रेम मृदु बोलेउ गरुड़ बहोरि॥ ९३ (क) ॥

After praising him in many ways, bowing his head, and joining his hands, Garuda again spoke in loving, humble, and gentle words.

You are all-knowing, a knower of truth, beyond darkness; endowed with good intellect, noble conduct, and simplicity; the abode of knowledge, detachment, and realization; and a beloved servant of Lord Raghunatha.
कारन कवन देह यह पाई। तात सकल मोहि कहहु बुझाई॥ राम चरित सर सुंदर स्वामी। पायहु कहाँ कहहु नभगामी॥ २ ॥

kārana kavana deha yaha pāī। tāta sakala mohi kahahu bujhāī॥ rāma carita sara sundara svāmī। pāyahu kahāṃ kahahu nabhagāmī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
For what reason did you obtain this body, O father? Please explain everything to me. O Lord, O sky-traveler, where did you obtain this beautiful Ramcharitmanas? Tell me.
नाथ सुना मैं अस सिव पाहीं। महा प्रलयहुँ नास तव नाहीं॥ मुधा बचन नहिं ईस्वर कहई। सोउ मोरें मन संसय अहई॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
nātha sunā maiṃ asa siva pāhīṃ। mahā pralayahuṃ nāsa tava nāhīṃ॥ mudhā bacana nahiṃ īsvara kahī। sou moreṃ mana saṃsaya ahī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, I have heard from Shiva that even in the great dissolution You do not perish, and that the Lord never speaks falsehood. Yet this too remains a doubt in my mind.
अग जग जीव नाग नर देवा। नाथ सकल जगु काल कलेवा॥ अंड कटाह अमित लयकारी। कालु सदा दुरतिक्रम भारी॥ ४ ॥

aga jaga jīva nāga nara devā। nātha sakala jagu kāla kalevā॥ aṃḍa kaṭāha amita layakārī। kālu sadā duratikrama bhārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
[For] O Lord, serpents, humans, gods, and all moving and unmoving beings, along with this entire world, are but the meal of Time. Time, which destroys countless cosmic eggs, is always overwhelmingly irresistible.
तुम्हहि न ब्यापत काल अति कराल कारन कवन। मोहि सो कहहु कृपाल ग्यान प्रभाव कि जोग बल॥ ९४ (क) ॥

tumhahi na byāpata kāla ati karāla kārana kavana। mohi so kahahu kṛpāla jñāna prabhāva ki joga bala॥ 94 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Why does that extremely terrible Time not affect You, O Lord? Kindly tell me: is it the power of knowledge or the power of yoga?
प्रभु तव आश्रम आएँ मोर मोह भ्रम भाग। कारन कवन सो नाथ सब कहहु सहित अनुराग॥ ९४ (ख) ॥

prabhu tava āśrama āeṃ mora moha bhrama bhāga। kārana kavana so nātha saba kahahu sahita anurāga॥ 94 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, upon coming to your hermitage, my delusion and confusion fled. What is the reason for this? O Lord, please tell me all this with love.
गरुड़ गिरा सुनि हरषेउ कागा। बोलेउ उमा परम अनुरागा॥ धन्य धन्य तव मति उरगारी। प्रस्न तुम्हारि मोहि अति प्यारी॥ १ ॥

garuḍa girā suni haraṣeu kāgā। boleu umā parama anurāgā॥ dhanya dhanya tava mati uragārī। prasna tumhāri mohi ati pyārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Uma, hearing Garuda’s words, Kakabhushundi rejoiced and, filled with great affection, said: “Blessed, blessed is your wisdom, O enemy of serpents! Your question is very dear to me.”
सुनि तव प्रस्न सप्रेम सुहाई। बहुत जनम कै सुधि मोहि आई॥ सब निज कथा कहउँ मैं गाई। तात सुनहु सादर मन लाई॥ २ ॥

suni tava prasna saprema suhāī। bahuta janama kai sudhi mohi āī॥ saba nija kathā kahauṃ maiṃ gāī। tāta sunahu sādara mana lāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing your loving and beautiful question, I have remembered many of my past births. I shall tell my whole story. O dear one, listen with reverence and full attention.
जप तप मख सम दम ब्रत दाना। बिरति बिबेक जोग बिग्याना॥ सब कर फल रघुपति पद प्रेमा। तेहि बिनु कोउ न पावइ छेमा॥ ३ ॥

japa tapa makha sama dama brata dānā। birati bibeka joga bigyānā॥ saba kara phala raghupati pada premā। tehi binu kou na pāvai chēmā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The fruit of all acts of japa, austerity, sacrifice, self-control, vows, charity, renunciation, discrimination, yoga, and spiritual knowledge is love for the feet of Lord Raghupati. Without that, no one attains grace.
एहिं तन राम भगति मैं पाई। ताते मोहि ममता अधिकाई॥ जेहि तें कछु निज स्वारथ होई। तेहि पर ममता कर सब कोई॥ ४ ॥

ehiṃ tana rāma bhagati maiṃ pāī। tāte mohi mamatā adhikāī॥ jehi teṃ kachu nija svāratha hoī। tehi para mamatā kara saba koī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
I have attained devotion to Rama in this very body; therefore my attachment to it is greater. Everyone loves that from which some personal gain is obtained.
पन्नगारि असि नीति श्रुति संमत सज्जन कहहिं। अति नीचहु सन प्रीति करिअ जानि निज परम हित॥ ९५ (क) ॥

pannagāri asi nīti śruti saṃmata sajjana kahahiṃ। ati nīcahu sana prīti kariya jāni nija parama hita॥ 95 (a) ॥
Meaning:
O Garuda, such is the accepted teaching of the Vedas, and the noble also say that, knowing one’s supreme good, one should show affection even to the very lowly.
पाट कीट तें होइ तेहि तें पाटंबर रुचिर। कृमि पालइ सबु कोइ परम अपावन प्रान सम॥ ९५ (ख) ॥

pāṭa kīṭa teṃ hoi tehi teṃ pāṭaṃbara rucira। kṛmi pālai sabu koi parama apāvana prāna sama॥ 95 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Silk cloth comes from the silkworm, and from it are made beautiful garments. For that reason even that most impure worm is cherished by everyone as if it were their own life.
स्वारथ साँच जीव कहुँ एहा। मन क्रम बचन राम पद नेहा॥ सोइ पावन सोइ सुभग सरीरा। जो तनु पाइ भजिअ रघुबीरा॥ १ ॥

svāratha sāṃca jīva kahuṃ ehā। mana krama bacana rāma pada nehā॥ soi pāvana soi subhaga sarīrā। jo tanu pāi bhajiya raghubīrā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
For a living being, the true gain is love for Rama’s feet in thought, word, and deed. That body alone is pure and beautiful in which one, having received it, worships Raghubir.
राम बिमुख लहि बिधि सम देही। कबि कोबिद न प्रसंसहिं तेही॥ राम भगति एहिं तन उर जामी। ताते मोहि परम प्रिय स्वामी॥ २ ॥

rāma bimukha lahi bidhi sama dehī। kabi kobida na prasaṃsahiṃ tehī॥ rāma bhagati ehiṃ tana ura jāmī। tāte mohi parama priya svāmī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
One who is turned away from Rama, even if he receives a body like Brahma’s, is not praised by poets and the wise. In this body, devotion to Rama has arisen in my heart; therefore, O Lord, it is supremely dear to me.
तजउँ न तन निज इच्छा मरना। तन बिनु बेद भजन नहिं बरना॥ प्रथम मोहँ मोहि बहुत बिगोवा। राम बिमुख सुख कबहुँ न सोवा॥ ३ ॥

tajauṃ na tana nija icchā maranā। tana binu beda bhajana nahiṃ baranā॥ prathama mohaṃ mohi bahuta bigovā। rāma bimukha sukha kabahuṃ na sovā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
My dying is in my own will, yet I do not abandon this body, for the Vedas declare that without the body devotion cannot be practiced. At first delusion ruined me badly. Turned away from Rama, I never slept in peace.
नाना जनम कर्म पुनि नाना। किए जोग जप तप मख दाना॥ कवन जोनि जनमेउँ जहँ नाहीं। मैं खगेस भ्रमि भ्रमि जग माहीं॥ ४ ॥

nānā janama karma puni nānā। kie joga japa tapa makha dānā॥ kavana joni janameuṃ jahaṃ nāhīṃ। maiṃ khagesa bhrami bhrami jaga māhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
In many births, again and again, I performed many kinds of yoga, japa, austerity, sacrifice, and charity. O Garuda, in what species of life in this world have I not been born again and again?
देखेउँ करि सब करम गोसाईं। सुखी न भयउँ अबहिं की नाईं॥ सुधि मोहि नाथ जन्म बहु केरी। सिव प्रसाद मति मोहँ न घेरी॥ ५ ॥

dekheuṃ kari saba karama gosāīṃ। sukhī na bhayauṃ abahiṃ kī nāīṃ॥ sudhi mohi nātha janma bahu kerī। siva prasāda mati mohaṃ na gherī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
O Gosain, I tried every action, but I was never happy as I am now. O Lord, I remember many births; by Shiva’s grace, delusion has not surrounded my mind.
