Narada's Visit and Hymn of Praise

The divine sage Narada comes for Rama's darshana and sings of his glory. After offering his praise, he returns to Brahmaloka.

Doha

तेहिं अवसर मुनि नारद आए करतल बीन। गावन लगे राम कल कीरति सदा नबीन॥ ५० ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tehiṃ avasara muni nārada āe karatala bīna। gāvana lage rāma kala kīrati sadā nabīna॥ 50 ॥

Meaning:

At that very moment, the sage Narada arrived with a vina in his hand. He began singing the beautiful, ever-new glory of Rama.

Chaupai

मामवलोकय पंकज लोचन। कृपा बिलोकनि सोच बिमोचन॥ नील तामरस स्याम काम अरि। हृदय कंज मकरंद मधुप हरि॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

māmavalokaya paṃkaja locana। kṛpā bilokani soca bimocana॥ nīla tāmarasa syāma kāma ari। hṛdaya kaṃja makaraṃda madhupa hari॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

O lotus-eyed Lord, look upon me with your gracious glance, which dispels sorrow. O Hari, you are dark like a blue lotus and, like a bee, you drink the nectar of the lotus-heart of Shiva, the enemy of Kama.

Chaupai

जातुधान बरूथ बल भंजन। मुनि सज्जन रंजन अघ गंजन॥ भूसुर ससि नव बृंद बलाहक। असरन सरन दीन जन गाहक॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jātudhāna barūtha bala bhaṃjana। muni sajjana raṃjana agha gaṃjana॥ bhūsura sasi nava bṛnda balāhaka। asarana sarana dīna jana gāhaka॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

You break the power of the hosts of demons. You delight the sages and the good, and destroy sin. For the Brahmins you are like the moon and a mass of fresh clouds; you give refuge to the helpless and receive the lowly and poor into your shelter.

Chaupai

भुज बल बिपुल भार महि खंडित। खर दूषन बिराध बध पंडित॥ रावनारि सुखरूप भूपबर। जय दसरथ कुल कुमुद सुधाकर॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bhuja bala bipula bhāra mahi khaṃḍita। khara dūṣana birādha badha paṃḍita॥ rāvanāri sukharūpa bhūpabara। jaya dasaratha kula kumuda sudhākara॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

By the strength of your arms you removed the great burden of the earth; you were skilled in killing Khara, Dushana, and Viradha; O enemy of Ravana, blissful form, best among kings, victory to you, moon of the lotus of Dasharatha's lineage!

सुजस पुरान बिदित निगमागम। गावत सुर मुनि संत समागम॥ कारुनीक ब्यलीक मद खंडन। सब बिधि कुसल कोसला मंडन॥ ४ ॥

sujasa purāna bidita nigamāgama। gāvata sura muni saṃta samāgama॥ kārunīka byalīka mada khaṃḍana। saba bidhi kusala kosalā maṃḍana॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Your splendid fame is known in the Puranas, the Vedas, and the scriptures; gods, sages, and saints sing it in their gatherings. You are compassionate, the destroyer of false pride in every way, and the ornament of Kosala.

कलि मल मथन नाम ममताहन। तुलसिदास प्रभु पाहि प्रनत जन॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

kali mala mathana nāma mamatāhana। tulasidāsa prabhu pāhi pranata jana॥ 5 ॥

Meaning:

Your name churns away the sins of Kali-yuga and destroys attachment. O Lord of Tulsidas, protect your surrendered devotee.

Doha

प्रेम सहित मुनि नारद बरनि राम गुन ग्राम। सोभासिंधु हृदयँ धरि गए जहाँ बिधि धाम॥ ५१ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

prema sahita muni nārada barani rāma guna grāma। sobhāsiṃdhu hṛdayaṃ dhari gae jahāṃ bidhi dhāma॥ 51 ॥

Meaning:

After lovingly narrating the multitude of Rama's virtues, sage Narada, holding the ocean of beauty in his heart, went to the abode of Brahma.
