Janaka Sends Word to Dasharatha; the Wedding Party Leaves Ayodhya

King Janaka sends the joyful news of the wedding to Ayodhya. Delighted by the message, King Dasharatha sets out for Janakpur with the royal family and the wedding procession.

दूत अवधपुर पठवहु जाई। आनहिं नृप दसरथहि बोलाई॥ मुदित राउ कहि भलेहिं कृपाला। पठए दूत बोलि तेहि काला॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

dūta avadhapura paṭhavahu jāī। ānahiṃ nṛpa dasarathahi bolāī॥ mudita rāu kahi bhalehiṃ kṛpālā। paṭhae dūta boli tehi kālā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Send messengers to Ayodhya to summon King Dasharatha. The king, delighted, said, 'Very good, O gracious one!' and at once had the messengers summoned and sent.

Chaupai

बहुरि महाजन सकल बोलाए। आइ सबन्हि सादर सिर नाए॥ हाट बाट मंदिर सुरबासा। नगरु सँवारहु चारिहुँ पासा॥ २ ॥

bahuri mahājana sakala bolāe। āi sabhanhi sādar sira nāe॥ hāṭa bāṭa mandira surabāsā। nagaru saṃvārahu cārihuṃ pāsā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Then he summoned all the merchants, and they all came and bowed respectfully. [He said:] Beautify the markets, roads, temples, and every part of the city on all sides.

हरषि चले निज निज गृह आए। पुनि परिचारक बोलि पठाए॥ रचहु बिचित्र बितान बनाई। सिर धरि बचन चले सचु पाई॥ ३ ॥

haraṣi cale nija nija gṛha āe। puni paricāraka boli paṭhāe॥ racahu bicitra bitāna banāī। sira dhari bacana cale sacu pāī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

The merchants left happily and returned to their own homes. Then he sent for the attendants again and ordered them: 'Prepare a wondrous canopy.' Hearing this, they took the king's words to heart and departed gladly.

पठए बोलि गुनी तिन्ह नाना। जे बितान बिधि कुसल सुजाना॥ बिधिहि बंदि तिन्ह कीन्ह अरंभा। बिरचे कनक कदलि के खंभा॥ ४ ॥

paṭhae boli gunī tinha nānā। je bitāna bidhi kusala sujānā॥ bidhihiṃ bandi tinh kīna araṃbhā। birace kanaka kadali ke khaṃbhā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

He summoned many skilled artisans, expert and wise in making canopies. Worshipping Brahma, they began the work and fashioned pillars of gold like banana trunks.

हरित मनिन्ह के पत्र फल पदुमराग के फूल। रचना देखि बिचित्र अति मनु बिरंचि कर भूल॥ २८७ ॥

harita maninha ke patra phala padumarāga ke phūla। rachanā dekhi bicitra ati manu birañci kara bhūla॥ 287 ॥

Meaning:

They made leaves and fruits of green gems and flowers of padmaraga gems. Seeing the exceedingly wondrous workmanship, even Brahma's mind was bewildered.

बेनु हरित मनिमय सब कीन्हे। सरल सपरब परहिं नहिं चीन्हे॥ कनक कलित अहिबेलि बनाई। लखि नहिं परइ सपरन सुहाई॥ १ ॥

benu harita manimaya saba kīnhe। sarala saparaba parahiṃ nahiṃ chīnhe॥ kanaka kalita ahibeli banāī। lakhi nahiṃ parai saperana suhāī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

The bamboo was made of green gems throughout, straight and jointed, yet not recognizable [as gems]. A beautiful golden betel vine was fashioned, so lovely that it could scarcely be distinguished.

तेहि के रचि पचि बंध बनाए। बिच बिच मुकुता दाम सुहाए॥ मानिक मरकत कुलिस पिरोजा। चीरि कोरि पचि रचे सरोजा॥ २ ॥

tehi ke raci pachi baṃdha banāe। bica bica mukutā dāma suhāe॥ mānika marakata kulisa pirojā। cīri kori pachi rache sarojā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Around it, bindings were made by carving and inlaying, with lovely strings of pearls between them. Rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and turquoise were cut, carved, and inlaid into lotuses.

किए भृंग बहुरंग बिहंगा। गुंजहिं कूजहिं पवन प्रसंगा॥ सुर प्रतिमा खंभन गढ़ि काढ़ीं। मंगल द्रब्य लिएँ सब ठाढ़ीं॥ ३ ॥

kie bhṛṃga bahuraṅga bihangā। guṃjahiṃ kūjhahiṃ pavana prasaṃgā॥ sura pratimā khaṃbhana gaṛhi kāḍhīṃ। maṃgala drabya līẽ saba ṭhāṛhīṃ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Bees and birds of many colors were fashioned, humming and singing with the breeze. Images of deities were carved on the pillars and set up, all standing with auspicious offerings in hand.

चौकें भाँति अनेक पुराईं। सिंधुर मनिमय सहज सुहाईं॥ ४ ॥

caukẽ bhānti aneka purāīṃ। siṃdhura manimaya sahaja suhāīṃ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Courtyards of many kinds were laid out, naturally beautiful and pleasing with elephant-pearls.

सौरभ पल्लव सुभग सुठि किए नीलमनि कोरि। हेम बौर मरकत घवरि लसत पाटमय डोरि॥ २८८ ॥

saurabha pallava subhaga suṭhi kie nīlamani kori। hema baura marakata ghavari lasata pāṭamaya ḍori॥ 288 ॥

Meaning:

The fragrant, lovely leaves were exquisitely carved from blue gems. Golden blossoms and emerald clusters, bound with silken thread, shone forth beautifully.

रचे रुचिर बर बंदनिवारे। मनहुँ मनोभवँ फंद सँवारे॥ मंगल कलस अनेक बनाए। ध्वज पताक पट चमर सुहाए॥ १ ॥

rache rucira bara bandanivāre। manahuṃ manobhavaṃ phanda saṃvāre॥ maṃgala kalasa aneka banāe। dhvaja patāka paṭa camara suhāe॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

They made beautiful and splendid festoons, as though Kāma himself had arranged snares. They prepared many auspicious pitchers, and lovely flags, streamers, cloth hangings, and chowries.

दीप मनोहर मनिमय नाना। जाइ न बरनि बिचित्र बिताना॥ जेहिं मंडप दुलहिनि बैदेही। सो बरनै असि मति कबि केही॥ २ ॥

dīpa manohara manimaya nānā। jāi na barani bicitra bitānā॥ jehiṃ maṃḍapa dulahini baidehī। so baranai asi mati kabi kehī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

It had many lovely lamps made of gems, and that wondrous pavilion cannot be described. In the pavilion where Sita, as bride, will sit, what poet has the intellect to describe it?

दूलहु रामु रूप गुन सागर। सो बितानु तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥ जनक भवन कै सोभा जैसी। गृह गृह प्रति पुर देखिअ तैसी॥ ३ ॥

dūlahu rāmu rūpa guna sāgara। so bitānu tihuṃ loka ujāgara॥ janaka bhavana kai sobhā jaisī। gṛha gṛha prati pura dekhia taisī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

The bridegroom is Rama, the ocean of beauty and virtues, and that canopy will make the three worlds resplendent. The splendor of Janaka's palace is such that the same splendor seems visible in every house of the city.

जेहिं तेरहुति तेहि समय निहारी। तेहि लघु लगहिं भुवन दस चारी॥ जो संपदा नीच गृह सोहा। सो बिलोकि सुरनायक मोहा॥ ४ ॥

jehiṃ terahuti tehi samaya nihārī। tehi laghu lagahiṃ bhuvana dasa cārī॥ jo saṃpadā nīca gṛha sohā। so biloki suranāyaka mohā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Whoever saw Tirhut at that time found the fourteen worlds to be small. The wealth that adorned even humble houses there was such that the lord of the gods was enchanted.

बसइ नगर जेहिं लच्छि करि कपट नारि बर बेषु। तेहि पुर कै सोभा कहत सकुचहिं सारद सेषु॥ २८९ ॥

basai nagara jehiṃ lacchi kari kapaṭa nāri bara beṣu। tehi pura kai sobhā kahata sakucahiṃ sārada seṣu॥ 289 ॥

Meaning:

In the city where Lakshmi herself dwells, disguised through a clever stratagem in the form of a beautiful woman, even Saraswati and Shesha hesitate to speak of that city's splendor.

pahuṃce dūta rāma pura pāvana। haraṣe nagara biloki suhāvana॥ bhūpa dvāra tinha khabara janāī। dasaratha nṛpa suni lie bolāī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

The envoys reached Rama's holy city. Seeing the lovely city, they were delighted. They went to the royal gate and sent word; hearing this, King Dasharatha had them summoned.

करि प्रनामु तिन्ह पाती दीन्ही। मुदित महीप आपु उठि लीन्ही॥ बारि बिलोचन बाँचत पाती। पुलक गात आई भरि छाती॥ २ ॥

kari pranāmu tinha pātī dīnhī। mudita mahīpa āpu uṭhi līnhī॥ bāri bilocana bāṃcata pātī। pulaka gāta āī bhari chātī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

The envoys bowed and gave the letter. The delighted king himself rose and took it. As he read the letter, tears filled his eyes, his body thrilled, and his chest swelled with emotion.

रामु लखनु उर कर बर चीठी। रहि गए कहत न खाटी मीठी॥ पुनि धरि धीर पत्रिका बाँची। हरषी सभा बात सुनि साँची॥ ३ ॥

rāmu lakhanu ura kara bara cīṭhī। rahi gae kahata na khāṭī mīṭhī॥ puni dhari dhīra patrikā bāṃcī। haraṣī sabhā bāta suni sāṃcī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Rama and Lakshmana were in his heart, and the beautiful letter was in his hand; the king remained holding it and could say nothing, neither bitter nor sweet. Then, steadying himself, he read the letter. The whole assembly rejoiced on hearing the true news.

खेलत रहे तहाँ सुधि पाई। आए भरतु सहित हित भाई॥ पूछत अति सनेहँ सकुचाई। तात कहाँ तें पाती आई॥ ४ ॥

khelata rahe tahāṃ sudhi pāī। āe bharatu sahita hita bhāī॥ pūchata ati sanehaṃ sakucāī। tāta kahāṃ teṃ pātī āī॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

While Bharata was playing there with his dear companions, news came and he arrived. With great affection and a shy hesitation, he asked, 'Father, from where has the letter come?'

कुसल प्रानप्रिय बंधु दोउ अहहिं कहहु केहिं देस। सुनि सनेह साने बचन बाची बहुरि नरेस॥ २९० ॥

kusalā prānapriya bandhu dou ahahiṃ kahahu kehiṃ desa। suni saneha sāne bacana bācī bahuri naresa॥ 290 ॥

Meaning:

Our two brothers, dearer to us than life, are they well, and in what land are they? Hearing these words steeped in affection, the king read the letter again.

सुनि पाती पुलके दोउ भ्राता। अधिक सनेहु समात न गाता॥ प्रीति पुनीत भरत कै देखी। सकल सभाँ सुखु लहेउ बिसेषी॥ १ ॥

suni pātī pulake dou bhrātā। adhika sanehu samāta na gātā॥ prīti punīta bharata kai dekhī। sakala sabhāṃ sukhu laheu biseṣī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

On hearing the letter, both brothers were thrilled. Their affection grew so great that it could not be contained in the body. Seeing Bharata's pure devotion, the whole assembly experienced special joy.

तब नृप दूत निकट बैठारे। मधुर मनोहर बचन उचारे॥ भैआ कहहु कुसल दोउ बारे। तुम्ह नीकें निज नयन निहारे॥ २ ॥

taba nṛpa dūta nikaṭa baiṭhāre। madhura manohara bacana ucāre॥ bhaiā kahahu kusala dou bāre। tumhaṃ nīkẽ nija nayana nihāre॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Then the king seated the envoys near him and spoke sweet, charming words: 'Brother, tell me, are both the boys well? You have surely seen them well with your own eyes.'

स्यामल गौर धरें धनु भाथा। बय किसोर कौसिक मुनि साथा॥ पहिचानहु तुम्ह कहहु सुभाऊ। प्रेम बिबस पुनि पुनि कह राऊ॥ ३ ॥

syāmala gaura dhareṃ dhanu bhāthā। baya kisora kausika muni sāthā॥ pahicānahu tumhaṃ kahahu subhāū। prema bibasa puni puni kaha rāū॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

They are dark and fair in complexion, bearing bow and quiver, still in boyhood, and they are with sage Kaushika. If you recognize them, then tell us their nature. The king, overcome by love, kept saying this again and again.

जा दिन तें मुनि गए लवाई। तब तें आजु साँचि सुधि पाई॥ कहहु बिदेह कवन बिधि जाने। सुनि प्रिय बचन दूत मुसुकाने॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jā dina teṃ muni gae lavāī। taba teṃ āju sāṃci sudhi pāī॥ kahahu videha kavana vidhi jāne। suni priya bacana dūta musukāne॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

[My brother!] Since the day the sage took them away, only today have we received the true news. Tell us, how did King Janaka recognize them? Hearing these dear words, the envoys smiled.

सुनहु महीपति मुकुट मनि तुम्ह सम धन्य न कोउ। रामु लखनु जिन्ह के तनय बिस्व बिभूषन दोउ॥ २९१ ॥

sunahu mahīpati mukuṭa mani tumha sama dhanya na kou। rāmu lakhanu jinha ke tanaya biswa bibhūṣana dou॥ 291 ॥

Meaning:

Hear me, jewel among kings: no one is as blessed as you, for you have Rama and Lakshmana as your sons, both ornaments of the world.

Meaning:

Your sons are beyond questioning; they are lion-like men, the light of the three cities. Before their fame, the moon seems dim, and before their valor, the sun seems cool.

तिन्ह कहँ कहिअ नाथ किमि चीन्हे। देखिअ रबि कि दीप कर लीन्हे॥ सीय स्वयंबर भूप अनेका। समिटे सुभट एक तें एका॥ २ ॥

tinha kahṃ kahi'a nātha kimi cīhne। dekhia rabi ki dīpa kara līhne॥ sīya svayaṃbara bhūpa anekā। samiṭe subhaṭa eka teṃ ekā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord, how can one ask how they were recognized? Does one look at the sun with a lamp in hand? At Sita's swayamvara, many kings and one by one countless warriors had assembled.

संभु सरासनु काहुँ न टारा। हारे सकल बीर बरिआरा॥ तीनि लोक महँ जे भटमानी। सभ कै सकति संभु धनु भानी॥ ३ ॥

saṃbhu sarāsanu kāhuṃ na ṭārā। hāre sakala bīra bariārā॥ tīni loka mahaṃ je bhaṭamānī। sabha kai sakati saṃbhu dhanu bhānī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

But no one could move Shiva's bow; all the mighty warriors were defeated. Among those proud of their prowess in the three worlds, Shiva's bow broke their strength.

सकइ उठाइ सरासुर मेरू। सोउ हियँ हारि गयउ करि फेरू॥ जेहिं कौतुक सिवसैलु उठावा। सोउ तेहि सभाँ पराभउ पावा॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

sakai uṭhāi sarāsura merū। sou hiyaṃ hāri gayau kari pherū॥ jehiṃ kautuka sivasailu uṭhāvā। sou tehi sabhāṃ parābhau pāvā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Even Bana, who could lift Mount Meru, withdrew in defeat. And he who, in sport, had lifted Kailash was defeated in that assembly.

तहाँ राम रघुबंसमनि सुनिअ महा महिपाल। भंजेउ चाप प्रयास बिनु जिमि गज पंकज नाल॥ २९२ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tahāṃ rāma raghubaṃsamani suni'a mahā mahipāla। bhañjeu cāpa prayāsa binu jimi gaja paṃkaja nāla॥ 292 ॥

Meaning:

There, O great king, hear of Rama, jewel of Raghu's line: without any effort he broke the bow, just as an elephant snaps a lotus stalk.

सुनि सरोष भृगुनायकु आए। बहुत भाँति तिन्ह आँखि देखाए॥ देखि राम बलु निज धनु दीन्हा। करि बहु बिनय गवनु बन कीन्हा॥ १ ॥

suni saroṣa bhṛgunāyaku āe। bahuta bhāṃti tinha āṃkhi dekhāe॥ dekhi rāma balu nija dhanu dīnhā। kari bahu binaya gavanu bana kīnhā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing of the breaking of the bow, Parashurama came in anger and showed his eyes in many ways. Seeing Rama's strength, he gave up his own bow and, after much supplication, went away to the forest.

राजन रामु अतुलबल जैसें। तेज निधान लखनु पुनि तैसें॥ कंपहिं भूप बिलोकत जाकें। जिमि गज हरि किसोर के ताकें॥ २ ॥

rājana rāmu atulabala jaisẽ। teja nidhāna lakhanu puni taisẽ॥ kampaṃhiṃ bhūpa bilokata jākeṃ। jimi gaja hari kisora ke tākeṃ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

O king, just as Rama is of incomparable strength, so too is Lakshmana, a treasure of splendor. Merely seeing them, kings tremble, as an elephant trembles before a lion cub.

देव देखि तव बालक दोऊ। अब न आँखि तर आवत कोऊ॥ दूत बचन रचना प्रिय लागी। प्रेम प्रताप बीर रस पागी॥ ३ ॥

deva dekhi tava bālaka dou। aba na āṃkhi tara āvata kou॥ dūta bacana racanā priya lāgī। prema pratāpa bīra rasa pāgī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord, after seeing your two boys, no one else now comes under the eye. The envoys' composition of words, filled with love, splendor, and heroic sentiment, was very pleasing to all.

सभा समेत राउ अनुरागे। दूतन्ह देन निछावरि लागे॥ कहि अनीति ते मूदहिं काना। धरमु बिचारि सबहिं सुखु माना॥ ४ ॥

sabhā sameta rāu anurāge। dūtanha dena nichāvari lāge॥ kahi anīti te mūdahiṃ kānā। dharamu bicāri sabahiṃ sukhu mānā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

The king, along with the assembly, was filled with affection and began offering gifts to the envoys. When they said it was improper, the envoys covered their ears with their hands. Considering dharma, everyone felt pleased.

तब उठि भूप बसिष्ट कहुँ दीन्हि पत्रिका जाइ। कथा सुनाई गुरहि सब सादर दूत बोलाइ॥ २९३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

taba uṭhi bhūpa basiṣṭa kahuṃ dīnhi patrikā jāi। kathā sunāī gurahi saba sādara dūta bolāi॥ 293 ॥

Meaning:

Then the king rose, went to Vashishtha, gave him the letter, and, respectfully summoning the envoys, told the whole story to the guru.

सुनि बोले गुर अति सुखु पाई। पुन्य पुरुष कहुँ महि सुख छाई॥ जिमि सरिता सागर महुँ जाहीं। जद्यपि ताहि कामना नाहीं॥ १ ॥

suni bole gura ati sukhu pāī। punya purusha kahuṃ mahi sukha chāī॥ jimi saritā sāgara mahuṃ jāhīṃ। jadyapi tāhi kāmanā nāhīṃ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

On hearing the news and feeling great delight, the Guru said: “For a righteous man, the world is covered with happiness. Just as rivers flow into the ocean, even though the ocean has no desire for the rivers.”

तिमि सुख संपति बिनहिं बोलाएँ। धरमसील पहिं जाहिं सुभाएँ॥ तुम्ह गुर बिप्र धेनु सुर सेबी। तसि पुनीत कौसल्या देबी॥ २ ॥

timi sukha sampati binahiṃ bolāe। dharamashīla pahiṃ jāhiṃ subhāe॥ tumhaṃ guru bipra dhenu sura sebī। tasi punīta kausalyā devī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Likewise, happiness and prosperity go of their own accord to the righteous, even without being invited. Just as you are one who serves the Guru, the Brahmins, cows, and the gods, so too is the pure Devi Kaushalya.

सुकृती तुम्ह समान जग माहीं। भयउ न है कोउ होनेउ नाहीं॥ तुम्ह ते अधिक पुन्य बड़ काकें। राजन राम सरिस सुत जाकें॥ ३ ॥

sukṛtī tumhaṃ samāna jaga māhīṃ। bhayau na hai kou honeu nāhīṃ॥ tumha te adhika punya baḍa kākeṃ। rājana rāma sarisa suta jākeṃ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

In this world, there has been none like you in righteousness, none now, and none will ever be. O King, who could be more blessed than you, whose sons are like Rama?

बीर बिनीत धरम ब्रत धारी। गुन सागर बर बालक चारी॥ तुम्ह कहुँ सर्ब काल कल्याना। सजहु बरात बजाइ निसाना॥ ४ ॥

bīra binīta dharama brata dhārī। guna sāgara bara bālaka cārī॥ tumha kahuṃ sarba kāla kalyānā। sajahu barāta bajāi nisānā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

And your four sons are brave, humble, steadfast in virtue, and oceans of good qualities. For you there is auspiciousness at all times. Therefore, have the wedding procession prepared and the drums sounded.

चलहु बेगि सुनि गुर बचन भलेहिं नाथ सिरु नाइ। भूपति गवने भवन तब दूतन्ह बासु देवाइ॥ २९४ ॥

calahu begi suni gura bacana bhalehiṃ nātha sira nāi। bhūpati gavane bhavana taba dūtanha bāsu devāi॥ 294 ॥

Meaning:

rājā sabu ranivāsa bolāī। janaka patrikā bāci sunāī॥ suni sandeṣu sakala harṣānīṃ। apara kathā saba bhūpa bakhānīṃ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

The king summoned the entire royal household and read aloud Janak’s letter. Hearing the message, all the queens were filled with joy. Then the king described all the other बातें he had heard from the envoys.

प्रेम प्रफुल्लित राजहिं रानी। मनहुँ सिखिनि सुनि बारिद बानी॥ मुदित असीस देहिं गुर नारीं। अति आनंद मगन महतारीं॥ २ ॥

prema praphullita rājahiṃ rānī। manahuṃ sikhini suni bārida bānī॥ mudita asīsa dehiṃ gura nārīṃ। ati ānanda magana mahatārīṃ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

The queens, blossoming with love, were shining like peahens that rejoice on hearing the thunder of clouds. The elder women, or the ladies of the household, joyfully gave blessings, and the mothers were immersed in great delight.

लेहिं परस्पर अति प्रिय पाती। हृदयँ लगाइ जुड़ावहिं छाती॥ राम लखन कै कीरति करनी। बारहिं बार भूपबर बरनी॥ ३ ॥

Taking that very dear पत्रिका among themselves, they pressed it to their hearts and cooled their breasts. King Dasharath, श्रेष्ठ among kings, repeatedly described the fame and deeds of Rama and Lakshmana.

मुनि प्रसादु कहि द्वार सिधाए। रानिन्ह तब महिदेव बोलाए॥ दिए दान आनंद समेता। चले बिप्रबर आसिष देता॥ ४ ॥

Saying, “All this is by the grace of the sage,” they went out. Then the queens called the Brahmins and, with joy, gave them gifts. The foremost Brahmins departed while bestowing blessings.

Thus speaking, they set out wearing many kinds of fine garments. Overjoyed, the drummers struck the drums loudly. When all the people heard the news, congratulations and celebrations began in every house.

Bharata called all the stable chiefs and gave them the order [to prepare the horses]. They rose joyfully and hurried off. With care and taste they fitted the saddles and adorned the horses. Horses of every color and kind shone beautifully.

सुभग सकल सुठि चंचल करनी। अय इव जरत धरत पग धरनी॥ नाना जाति न जाहिं बखाने। निदरि पवनु जनु चहत उड़ाने॥ ३ ॥

All the horses were exceedingly handsome and quick in gait. They placed their hooves on the earth as though on burning metal. They belonged to many breeds and could not be fully described. So swift were they that they seemed to scorn the wind and wish to fly.

Clad in the garb of valor, all the heroic warriors came out and stood beyond the city. The clever ones were turning their horses in various ways and were rejoicing to hear the sounds of drums and kettledrums.

Meaning:

The charioteers had made the chariots wonderfully splendid by adorning them with banners, pennants, gems, and ornaments. Beautiful chowries graced them, and the bells were making sweet sounds. The chariots were so lovely that they seemed to outshine even the splendor of the sun’s chariot.

सावँकरन अगनित हय होते। ते तिन्ह रथन्ह सारथिन्ह जोते॥ सुंदर सकल अलंकृत सोहे। जिन्हहि बिलोकत मुनि मन मोहे॥ ३ ॥

There were countless dark-colored horses, and the charioteers yoked them to those chariots, which were all beautiful to behold and adorned with ornaments, and even the sages’ minds were enchanted upon seeing them.

They move on water just as they do on land. Because of their great speed, their hoofprints do not sink in the water. After preparing all weapons and equipment, the charioteers summoned the warriors.

Rising onto the chariots again and again, the wedding procession gathered outside the city. Wherever anyone goes for any task, beautiful omens appear for all.

There were beautiful palanquins, comfortable seats, chariots, and many other kinds of conveyances. Upon them rode groups of excellent Brahmins, as though all the meters of the Vedas had taken on bodies.

मागध सूत बंदि गुनगायक। चले जान चढ़ि जो जेहि लायक॥ बेसर ऊँट बृषभ बहु जाती। चले बस्तु भरि अगनित भाँती॥ ३ ॥

Māgadhs, bards, singers of praise, and others rode on whatever conveyance was fitting for them. Mules, camels, and bulls of many kinds carried loads of countless sorts of goods.

कोटिन्ह काँवरि चले कहारा। बिबिध बस्तु को बरनै पारा॥ चले सकल सेवक समुदाई। निज निज साजु समाजु बनाई॥ ४ ॥

Countless carriers walked with their shoulder-poles. There were so many kinds of goods with them that no one could describe them all. All the groups of servants set out, arranging their own respective gear and entourage.

सब कें उर निर्भर हरषु पूरित पुलक सरीर। कबहिं देखिबे नयन भरि रामु लखनु दोउ बीर॥ ३०० ॥

Elephants are trumpeting, and the dreadful sound of their bells is resounding. All around, chariots rattle and horses neigh. The kettledrums thunder defiantly against the clouds. No one can hear anything—whether his own or another’s—by ear.

महा भीर भूपति के द्वारें। रज होइ जाइ पषान पबारें॥ चढ़ी अटारिन्ह देखहिं नारीं। लिएँ आरती मंगल थारीं॥ २ ॥

At the king’s gate there is such a great crowd that if a stone were thrown there, it would be ground into dust. Women standing on the upper terraces are watching with lamps and auspicious trays for the आरती.

गावहिं गीत मनोहर नाना। अति आनंदु न जाइ बखाना॥ तब सुमंत्र दुइ स्यंदन साजी। जोते रबि हय निंदक बाजी॥ ३ ॥

Meaning:

They were singing many kinds of lovely songs, and their immense joy cannot be described. Then Sumantra prepared two chariots and yoked them with horses that could outshine even the steeds of the sun.

दोउ रथ रुचिर भूप पहिं आने। नहिं सारद पहिं जाहिं बखाने॥ राज समाजु एक रथ साजा। दूसर तेज पुंज अति भ्राजा॥ ४ ॥

Those two beautiful chariots were brought before King Dasharatha, whose splendor could not be described even by Saraswati. One chariot was adorned with royal furnishings, and the other was a mass of radiance, shining exceedingly bright.

He gladly helped the noble Vasistha onto that beautiful chariot, and then he himself mounted the other chariot, remembering Shiva, his Guru, Gauri (Parvati), and Ganesha.

Remembering Rama and receiving the Guru’s command, the lord of the earth, Dasharatha, set out while the conch was sounded. Seeing the wedding procession, the gods rejoiced and showered beautiful, auspicious flowers.

ghaṃṭa ghaṃṭi dhuni barani na jāhīṃ। sarava karahiṃ pāika phaharāhīṃ॥ karahiṃ bidūṣaka kautuka nānā। hāsa kusala kala gāna sujānā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

The sound of the bells cannot be described. The footmen or banner-bearers were performing feats and darting along. The jesters, skilled in laughter and clever in sweet singing, were displaying many kinds of playful entertainments.

Doha

तुरग नचावहिं कुअँर बर अकनि मृदंग निसान। नागर नट चितवहिं चकित डगहिं न ताल बँधान॥ ३०२ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

turaga nacāvahiṃ kuaṃra bara akani mṛdaṃga nisāna। nāgara naṭa chitavahiṃ cakita dagahiṃ na tāla baṃdhāna॥ 302 ॥

Meaning:

The noble princes were making the horses dance to the beat of the mridang and kettledrum, so perfectly in rhythm that they did not deviate from the measure at all. Clever acrobats watched in wonder.

बनइ न बरनत बनी बराता। होहिं सगुन सुंदर सुभदाता॥ चारा चाषु बाम दिसि लेई। मनहुँ सकल मंगल कहि देई॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

banai na baranata banī barātā। hohiṃ saguna sundara subhadātā॥ cārā cāṣu bāma disi leī। manahuṃ sakala maṃgala kahi deī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

The wedding procession is so splendid that it cannot be described. Beautiful, auspicious omens are appearing. The chataka bird is moving to the left, as if announcing every kind of blessing.

Chaupai

दाहिन काग सुखेत सुहावा। नकुल दरसु सब काहूँ पावा॥ सानुकूल बह त्रिबिध बयारी। सघट सबाल आव बर नारी॥ २ ॥

dāhina kāga sukheta suhāvā। nakula darasu saba kāhūṃ pāvā॥ sānukūla baha tribidha bayārī। saghaṭa sabāla āva bara nārī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

On the right side, the crow appears auspiciously in a pleasant field. Everyone has also had a sight of the mongoose. The three kinds of favorable breeze are blowing smoothly. Noble women are coming with filled pots and children in their laps.

Chaupai

लोवा फिरि फिरि दरसु देखावा। सुरभी सनमुख सिसुहि पिआवा॥ मृगमाला फिरि दाहिनि आई। मंगल गन जनु दीन्हि देखाई॥ ३ ॥

lovā phiri phiri darasu dekhāvā। surabhī sanmukha sisuhi piyāvā॥ mṛgamālā phiri dāhini āī। maṃgala gana janu dīnhi dekhāī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

The fox shows itself again and again. The cows stand facing their calves and nurse them. A herd of deer, turning from the left, comes to the right, as though the very host of auspicious signs had appeared there.

Chaupai

छेमकरी कह छेम बिसेषी। स्यामा बाम सुतरु पर देखी॥ सनमुख आयउ दधि अरु मीना। कर पुस्तक दुइ बिप्र प्रबीना॥ ४ ॥

kṣemakarī kaha kṣema bisēṣī। śyāmā bāma sutaru para dekhī॥ sanmukha āyau dadhi aru mīnā। kara pustaka dui bipra prabīnā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

The kshemakari bird, the auspicious white-headed kite, seems to proclaim special well-being. The dark bird is seen on the left side upon a beautiful tree. Curds, fish, and two learned Brahmins with books in hand appeared in front.

मंगलमय कल्यानमय अभिमत फल दातार। जनु सब साचे होन हित भए सगुन एक बार॥ ३०३ ॥

maṃgalamaya kalyāṇamaya abhimata phala dātāra। janu saba sāce hona hita bhae saguna eka bāra॥ 303 ॥

All the auspicious, beneficent omens that grant desired results seemed to become truly real all at once.

मंगल सगुन सुगम सब ताकें। सगुन ब्रह्म सुंदर सुत जाकें॥ राम सरिस बरु दुलहिनि सीता। समधी दसरथु जनकु पुनीता॥ १ ॥

maṅgala saguna sugama saba tākeṃ। saguna brahma sundara suta jākeṃ॥ rāma sarisa baru dulahini sītā। samadhī dasarathu janaku punītā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

For one who is Saguna Brahma Himself and whose son is so beautiful, all auspicious signs come easily. There is Rama as the bridegroom, Sita as the bride, and the pure Dasharatha and Janaka as the two fathers-in-law.

Chaupai

सुनि अस ब्याहु सगुन सब नाचे। अब कीन्हे बिरंचि हम साँचे॥ एहि बिधि कीन्ह बरात पयाना। हय गय गाजहिं हने निसाना॥ २ ॥

suni asa byāhu saguna saba nāce। aba kīṇhe birañci hama sāṃce॥ ehi bidhi kīṇha barāta payānā। haya gaya gājahiṃ hane nisānā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing of such a wedding, all the omens seemed to dance, as if saying, “Now Brahma has made us true.” In this way the wedding procession set out. Horses and elephants roared, and the drums resounded.

Chaupai

आवत जानि भानुकुल केतू। सरितन्हि जनक बँधाए सेतू॥ बीच बीच बर बास बनाए। सुरपुर सरिस संपदा छाए॥ ३ ॥

āvata jāni bhānukula ketū। saritanhi janaka baṃdhāe setū॥ bīca bīca bara bāsa banāe। surapura sarisa saṃpadā chāe॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Knowing that Dasharatha, the banner of the सूर्यवंश, was coming, King Janaka had bridges built over the rivers. Resting places were made at intervals, beautifully furnished with wealth like that of heaven.

Chaupai

असन सयन बर बसन सुहाए। पावहिं सब निज निज मन भाए॥ नित नूतन सुख लखि अनुकूले। सकल बरातिन्ह मंदिर भूले॥ ४ ॥

asana sayana bara basana suhāe। pāvahiṃ saba nija nija mana bhāe॥ nita nūtana sukha lakhi anukūle। sakala barātinha maṃdira bhūle॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

And there all the wedding guests received fine food, beds, and clothes that pleased each one’s own heart. Seeing new joys every day, in complete comfort, all the wedding guests forgot their homes.

आवत जानि बरात बर सुनि गहगहे निसान। सजि गज रथ पदचर तुरग लेन चले अगवान॥ ३०४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

āvata jāni barāta bara suni gahagahe nisāna। saji gaja ratha padacara turaga lena chale agavāna॥ 304 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing the loud booming of the drums and knowing that the noble wedding party was approaching, the welcoming party set out with elephants, chariots, footmen, and horses to receive them.

कनक कलस भरि कोपर थारा। भाजन ललित अनेक प्रकारा॥ भरे सुधासम सब पकवाने। नाना भाँति न जाहिं बखाने॥ १ ॥

kanaka kalasa bhari kopara thārā। bhājana lalita aneka prakārā॥ bhare sudhāsama saba pakavāne। nānā bhāṃti na jāhiṃ bakhāne॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Golden jars filled with milk, sherbet, cool drinks, water, and the like; trays, dishes, and many other beautiful vessels; and all kinds of delicacies, filled like nectar, beyond description.

फल अनेक बर बस्तु सुहाईं। हरषि भेंट हित भूप पठाईं॥ भूषन बसन महामनि नाना। खग मृग हय गय बहु बिधि जाना॥ २ ॥

phala aneka bara bastu suhāīṃ। haraṣi bheṃṭa hita bhūpa paṭhāīṃ॥ bhūṣana basana mahāmani nānā। khaga mr̥ga haya gaya bahu bidhi jānā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Fine fruits and many other beautiful gifts were sent by the king with delight. Ornaments, garments, many kinds of precious gems, birds, animals, horses, elephants, and many other conveyances were also included.

Chaupai

मंगल सगुन सुगंध सुहाए। बहुत भाँति महिपाल पठाए॥ दधि चिउरा उपहार अपारा। भरि भरि काँवरि चले कहारा॥ ३ ॥

maṅgala saguna sugaṃdha suhāe। bahuta bhāṃti mahipāla paṭhāe॥ dadhi ciurā upahāra apārā। bhari bhari kāṃvari chale kahārā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

The king sent many kinds of fragrant and auspicious offerings, along with good-omen gifts. Curd, beaten rice, and countless other presents were carried off by the bearers in baskets, filled to the brim.

अगवानन्ह जब दीखि बराता। उर आनंदु पुलक भर गाता॥ देखि बनाव सहित अगवाना। मुदित बरातिन्ह हने निसाना॥ ४ ॥

agavānanha jab dīkhi barātā। ura ānandu pulaka bhara gātā॥ dekhi banāva sahita agavānā। mudita barātinha hane nisānā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

When the welcoming party saw the wedding procession, joy overflowed in their hearts and their bodies bristled with delight. Seeing the welcomers in full adornment, the wedding guests joyfully sounded the drums.

Doha

हरषि परसपर मिलन हित कछुक चले बगमेल। जनु आनंद समुद्र दुइ मिलत बिहाइ सुबेल॥ ३०५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

haraṣi paraspara milana hita kachuka chale bagamela। janu ānanda samudra dui milata bihāi subela॥ 305 ॥

Meaning:

Some among the wedding party and the welcoming party, eager to meet one another, ran off in their joy, as though two oceans of bliss were meeting beyond all bounds.
