Angada enters Lanka as Rama's envoy and speaks fearlessly in Ravana's court. He offers Ravana one final chance to return Sita and seek refuge in Rama.

बंदि चरन उर धरि प्रभुताई। अंगद चलेउ सबहि सिरु नाई॥ प्रभु प्रताप उर सहज असंका। रन बाँकुरा बालिसुत बंका॥ १ ॥

bandi carana ura dhari prabhutāī। aṃgada caleu sabahi sira nāī॥ prabhu pratāpa ura sahaja asaṃkā। rana bāṃkurā bālisuta baṃkā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Bowing in reverence and holding the Lord's sovereignty in his heart, Angad departed, bowing to all. Bearing the Lord's might in his heart, the heroic son of Bali was naturally fearless in battle.
पुर पैठत रावन कर बेटा। खेलत रहा सो होइ गै भेटा॥ बातहिं बात करष बढ़ि आई। जुगल अतुल बल पुनि तरुनाई॥ २ ॥

pura paiṭhata rāvana kara beṭā। khelata rahā so hoi gai bheṭā॥ bātahiṃ bāta karaṣa baṛhi āī। jugala atula bala puni taruṇāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as he entered the city, he met Ravana's son, who was playing there. In the course of their talk, the quarrel grew. Both were of unequalled strength, and both were in the flower of youth.
तेहिं अंगद कहुँ लात उठाई। गहि पद पटकेउ भूमि भवाँई॥ निसिचर निकर देखि भट भारी। जहँ तहँ चले न सकहिं पुकारी॥ ३ ॥

tehiṃ aṃgada kahuṃ lātā uṭhāī। gahi pada paṭakeu bhūmi bhavāṃī॥ nisicara nikara dekhi bhaṭa bhārī। jahaṃ tahaṃ cale na sakahiṃ pukārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
He raised his leg to strike Angad. Angad seized that very foot and whirled him to the ground. Seeing this mighty warrior, the host of demons scattered in fear, unable even to cry out.
एक एक सन मरमु न कहहीं। समुझि तासु बध चुप करि रहहीं॥ भयउ कोलाहल नगर मझारी। आवा कपि लंका जेहिं जारी॥ ४ ॥

eka eka sana maramu na kahahīṃ। samujhi tāsu badha cupa kari rahahīṃ॥ bhayau kolāhala nagara majhārī। āvā kapi laṃkā jehiṃ jārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
They did not tell one another the true reason; thinking that he had been slain, they all remained silent. As word spread through the city, a commotion arose: 'The same monkey who burned Lanka has come again!'
अब धौं कहा करिहि करतारा। अति सभीत सब करहिं बिचारा॥ बिनु पूछें मगु देहिं दिखाई। जेहि बिलोक सोइ जाइ सुखाई॥ ५ ॥

aba dhauṃ kahā karihi karatārā। ati sabhīta saba karahiṃ bicārā॥ binu pūcheṃ magu dehiṃ dikhāī। jehi biloka soi jāi sukhāī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
All grew utterly frightened and wondered what the Creator would now do. They pointed Angad to the road [to Ravana's court] without even being asked. Whoever saw him at once withered away in fear.
गयउ सभा दरबार तब सुमिरि राम पद कंज। सिंह ठवनि इत उत चितव धीर बीर बल पुंज॥ १८ ॥

gayau sabhā darabāra taba sumiri rāma pada kanja। siṃha ṭhavani ita uta citava dhīra bīra bala puṃja॥ 18 ॥
Meaning:
Remembering the lotus-feet of Shri Ram, Angad went to the threshold of Ravana's assembly. There, that calm, heroic mass of strength looked around with a lion's proud bearing.
तुरत निसाचर एक पठावा। समाचार रावनहि जनावा॥ सुनत बिहँसि बोला दससीसा। आनहु बोलि कहाँ कर कीसा॥ १ ॥

turata nisācara eka paṭhāvā। samācāra rāvanahi janāvā॥ sunata bihaṃsi bolā dasasīsā। ānahu boli kahāṃ kara kīsā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
At once he sent a demon to inform Ravana of his arrival. Hearing this, Ravana laughed and said, 'Bring him in—let us see what sort of monkey this is.'
आयसु पाइ दूत बहु धाए। कपिकुंजरहि बोलि लै आए॥ अंगद दीख दसानन बैसें। सहित प्रान कज्जलगिरि जैसें॥ २ ॥

āyasu pāi dūta bahu dhāe। kapikuṃjarahi boli lai āe॥ aṃgada dīkha dasānana baisẽ। sahita prāna kajjalgiri jaisẽ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Receiving the command, many messengers hurried off and brought Angad, the elephant among monkeys. Angad saw Ravana seated there like a living mountain of soot.
भुजा बिटप सिर सृंग समाना। रोमावली लता जनु नाना॥ मुख नासिका नयन अरु काना। गिरि कंदरा खोह अनुमाना॥ ३ ॥

bhujā biṭapa sira sṛṃga samānā। romāvalī latā janu nānā॥ mukha nāsikā nayana aru kānā। giri kandarā khoha anumānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
His arms were like tree trunks and his head like mountain peaks. His body hair seemed like many creeping vines. His mouth, nose, eyes, and ears were like the caves and hollows of a mountain.
गयउ सभाँ मन नेकु न मुरा। बालितनय अतिबल बाँकुरा॥ उठे सभासद कपि कहुँ देखी। रावन उर भा क्रोध बिसेषी॥ ४ ॥

gayau sabhāṃ mana neku na murā। bālitanaya atibala bāṃkurā॥ uṭhe sabhāsada kapi kahuṃ dekhī। rāvana ura bhā krodha biseṣī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The immensely powerful and bold son of Bali, Angad, entered the assembly without the least hesitation in his mind. As soon as the courtiers saw Angad, they all rose. Seeing this, a great anger arose in Ravana's heart.
जथा मत्त गज जूथ महुँ पंचानन चलि जाइ। राम प्रताप सुमिरि मन बैठ सभाँ सिरु नाइ॥ १९ ॥

jathā matta gaja jūtha mahuṃ paṃcānana cali jāi। rāma pratāpa sumiri mana baiṭha sabhāṃ sira nāi॥ 19 ॥
Meaning:
Just as a lion goes among a herd of maddened elephants, so he entered the assembly, remembering Shri Ram's glory in his heart, and sat down there with fearless composure, bowing his head.
कह दसकंठ कवन तैं बंदर। मैं रघुबीर दूत दसकंधर॥ मम जनकहि तोहि रही मिताई। तव हित कारन आयउँ भाई॥ १ ॥

kaha dasakaṃṭha kavana taiṃ bandara। maiṃ raghubīra dūta dasakaṃdhara॥ mama janakahi tohi rahī mitāī। tava hita kārana āyauṃ bhāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana said, 'O monkey, who are you?' [Angad replied:] 'I am the messenger of Raghubir, O Dashakandhara. There was friendship between my father and you. Therefore, brother, I have come only for your welfare.'
उत्तम कुल पुलस्ति कर नाती। सिव बिरंचि पूजेहु बहु भाँती॥ बर पायहु कीन्हेहु सब काजा। जीतेहु लोकपाल सब राजा॥ २ ॥

uttama kula pulasti kara nātī। siva biraṃci pūjehu bahu bhāṃtī॥ bara pāyahu kīnhehu saba kājā। jītehu lokapāla saba rājā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Your lineage is noble; you are a descendant of Pulasti. You have worshiped Shiva and Brahma in many ways. You have obtained boons and accomplished all tasks. You have conquered the guardians of the directions and all kings.
नृप अभिमान मोह बस किंबा। हरि आनिहु सीता जगदंबा॥ अब सुभ कहा सुनहु तुम्ह मोरा। सब अपराध छमिहि प्रभु तोरा॥ ३ ॥

nṛpa abhimāna moha basa kiṃbā। hari ānihu sītā jagadaṃbā॥ aba subha kahā sunahu tumha morā। saba aparādha chamihi prabhu torā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Because of royal pride or delusion, you have carried off Sita, the Mother of the world. Now listen to my good counsel. If you do so, Lord Shri Rama will forgive all your offenses.
दसन गहहु तृन कंठ कुठारी। परिजन सहित संग निज नारी॥ सादर जनकसुता करि आगें। एहि बिधि चलहु सकल भय त्यागें॥ ४ ॥

dasana gahahu tṛna kaṃṭha kuṭhārī। parijana sahita saṃga nija nārī॥ sādara janakasutā kari āgẽ। ehi bidhi calahu sakala bhaya tyāgẽ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hold straw in your teeth and an axe at your throat; with your family and your own women, respectfully placing Janak's daughter in front, go forth in this manner, leaving all fear behind.
प्रनतपाल रघुबंसमनि त्राहि त्राहि अब मोहि। आरत गिरा सुनत प्रभु अभय करैगो तोहि॥ २० ॥

pranatapāla raghubaṃsamani trāhi trāhi aba mohi। ārata girā sunata prabhu abhaya karaigo tohi॥ 20 ॥
Meaning:
O protector of the surrendered, jewel of the Raghu line, protect me, protect me now. Hearing a cry of distress, the Lord will make you fearless.
रे कपिपोत बोलु संभारी। मूढ़ न जानेहि मोहि सुरारी॥ कहु निज नाम जनक कर भाई। केहि नातें मानिऐ मिताई॥ १ ॥

re kapipota bolu saṃbhārī। mūṛha na jānehi mohi surārī॥ kahu nija nāma janaka kara bhāī। kehi nātẽ māniē mitāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana said, 'O monkey child, speak carefully. Fool, do you not know me, the enemy of the gods? Tell me your own name and your father's name, brother. On what grounds do you claim friendship?'
अंगद नाम बालि कर बेटा। तासों कबहुँ भई ही भेटा॥ अंगद बचन सुनत सकुचाना। रहा बालि बानर मैं जाना॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
Angad said, 'My name is Angad; I am Bali's son. Have you ever met him?' Hearing Angad's words, Ravana became embarrassed and said, 'Yes, I realize it now: there was a monkey named Bali.'
अंगद तहीं बालि कर बालक। उपजेहु बंस अनल कुल घालक॥ गर्भ न गयहु ब्यर्थ तुम्ह जायहु। निज मुख तापस दूत कहायहु॥ ३ ॥

aṃgada tahīṃ bāli kara bālaka। upajehu baṃsa anala kula ghālaka॥ garbha na gayahu byartha tumha jāyahu। nija mukha tāpasa dūta kahāyahu॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Angad, you are Bali's own boy; you were born like fire in your own clan's bamboo grove, a destroyer of the family line. Why did you not die in the womb? You were born in vain, since with your own mouth you call yourself a messenger of ascetics!
अब कहु कुसल बालि कहँ अहई। बिहँसि बचन तब अंगद कहई॥ दिन दस गएँ बालि पहिं जाई। बूझेहु कुसल सखा उर लाई॥ ४ ॥

aba kahu kusala bāli kahaṃ ahī। bihaṃsi bacana taba aṃgada kahī॥ dina dasa gaẽ bāli pahiṃ jāī। būjhehu kusala sakhā ura lāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
'Now tell me about Bali's welfare—where is he now?' Then Angad laughed and said, 'After ten days, go to Bali yourself; embrace your friend to your heart and ask him about his welfare.'
राम बिरोध कुसल जसि होई। सो सब तोहि सुनाइहि सोई॥ सुनु सठ भेद होइ मन ताकें। श्रीरघुबीर हृदय नहिं जाकें॥ ५ ॥

rāma virodha kusala jasi hoī। so saba tohi sunāihi soī॥ sunu saṭha bheda hoi mana tākẽ। śrīraghubīra hṛdaya nahiṃ jākẽ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Whatever good comes from opposing Rama, he will tell you all about. Listen, fool: secrets can only dwell in the mind of one whose heart does not contain Shri Raghuvir.
हम कुल घालक सत्य तुम्ह कुल पालक दससीस। अंधउ बधिर न अस कहहिं नयन कान तव बीस॥ २१ ॥

hama kula ghālaka satya tumha kula pālaka dasasīsa। aṃdhau badhira na asa kahahiṃ nayana kāna tava bīsa॥ 21 ॥
Meaning:
It is true: I am the destroyer of my line, and you, O Dashasīsa, are the protector of your line. Even the blind and the deaf do not speak like this; you have twenty eyes and twenty ears!
सिव बिरंचि सुर मुनि समुदाई। चाहत जासु चरन सेवकाई॥ तासु दूत होइ हम कुल बोरा। अइसिहुँ मति उर बिहर न तोरा॥ १ ॥

siva biraṃci sura muni samudāī। cāhata jāsu carana sevakāī॥ tāsu dūta hoi hama kula borā। aisihuṃ mati ura bihara na torā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Shiva, Brahma, the gods, and the host of sages all seek to serve whose feet? Having become his messenger, I have ruined my lineage. Does your heart not tremble even with such wisdom?
सुनि कठोर बानी कपि केरी। कहत दसानन नयन तरेरी॥ खल तव कठिन बचन सब सहऊँ। नीति धर्म मैं जानत अहऊँ॥ २ ॥

suni kaṭhora bānī kapi kerī। kahata dasānana nayana tarerī॥ khala tava kaṭhina bacana saba sahauṃ। nīti dharma maiṃ jānata ahauṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the monkey's harsh words, Ravana glared and said, 'Wretch, I endure all your harsh speech because I know policy and righteousness.'
कह कपि धर्मसीलता तोरी। हमहुँ सुनी कृत पर त्रिय चोरी॥ देखी नयन दूत रखवारी। बूड़ि न मरहु धर्म ब्रतधारी॥ ३ ॥

kaha kapi dharmasīlatā torī। hamahuṃ sunī kṛta para triya corī॥ dekhī nayana dūta rakhavārī। būḍi na marahu dharma brata dhārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Angad said, 'I have also heard of your righteousness. [That is,] you stole another man's wife! And I saw with my own eyes how you guarded the messenger. Do you not drown and die, while claiming to uphold the vow of righteousness?'
कान नाक बिनु भगिनि निहारी। छमा कीन्हि तुम्ह धर्म बिचारी॥ धर्मसीलता तव जग जागी। पावा दरसु हमहुँ बड़भागी॥ ४ ॥

kāna nāka binu bhagini nihārī। chamā kīnhi tumha dharma bicārī॥ dharmasīlatā tava jaga jāgī। pāvā darasu hamahuṃ baṛabhāgī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing your sister without nose and ears, you forgave her after reflecting on dharma. Your righteousness is renowned throughout the world. We too are fortunate to have had your darshan.
जनि जल्पसि जड़ जंतु कपि सठ बिलोकु मम बाहु। लोकपाल बल बिपुल ससि ग्रसन हेतु सब राहु॥ २२ (क) ॥

jani jalpasi jaḍa jantu kapi saṭha biloku mama bāhu। lokapāla bala bipula sasi grasana hetu saba rāhu॥ 22 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Ravana said, 'O beastly monkey, do not chatter; look at my arms, fool. These are all Rahus, ready to swallow the great moon of the guardians of the directions' power.'
पुनि नभ सर मम कर निकर कमलन्हि पर करि बास। सोभत भयउ मराल इव संभु सहित कैलास॥ २२ (ख) ॥

puni nabha sara mama kara nikara kamalanhi para kari bāsa। sobhata bhayau marāla iva saṃbhu sahita kailāsa॥ 22 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Then, in the sky-lake, by dwelling upon the lotus-like clusters of my arms, Kailash with Shiva became beautiful like a swan.
तुम्हरे कटक माझ सुनु अंगद। मो सन भिरिहि कवन जोधा बद॥ तव प्रभु नारि बिरहँ बलहीना। अनुज तासु दुख दुखी मलीना॥ १ ॥

tumhare kaṭaka mājha sunu aṅgada। mo sana bhirihi kavana jodhā bada॥ tava prabhu nāri birahã balahīnā। anuja tāsu dukha dukhī malīnā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Angada, listen: among your army, tell me who is the warrior who can confront me? Your lord has become weakened by separation from his wife. And his younger brother is sorrowful and dull because of that grief.
तुम्ह सुग्रीव कूलद्रुम दोऊ। अनुज हमार भीरु अति सोऊ॥ जामवंत मंत्री अति बूढ़ा। सो कि होइ अब समरारूढ़ा॥ २ ॥

tumha sugrīva kūladruma doū। anuja hamāra bhīru ati soū॥ jāmavaṃta maṃtrī ati būṛhā। so ki hoi aba samarārūṛhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
You and Sugriva are like trees on the riverbank. As for my younger brother, Vibhishana, he is also very timid. The minister Jambavan is very old. How can he now be ready for battle?
सिल्पिकर्म जानहिं नल नीला। है कपि एक महा बलसीला॥ आवा प्रथम नगरु जेहिं जारा। सुनत बचन कह बालिकुमारा॥ ३ ॥

śilpikarma jānahiṃ nala nīlā। hai kapi eka mahā balasīlā॥ āvā prathama nagaru jehiṃ jārā। sunata bacana kaha bālikumārā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Nala and Nila know craftsmanship; what do they know of fighting? Yes, there is one monkey who is exceedingly powerful, who came first and burned the city. Hearing these words, Bali's son Angada said—
सत्य बचन कहु निसिचर नाहा। साँचेहुँ कीस कीन्ह पुर दाहा॥ रावन नगर अल्प कपि दहई। सुनि अस बचन सत्य को कहई॥ ४ ॥

satya bacana kahu nisicara nāhā। sā̃cehũ kīsa kīnha pura dāhā॥ rāvana nagara alpa kapi dahī। suni asa bacana satya ko kahī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O lord of the demons, speak the truth! Did that monkey really burn your city? The city of Ravana, that world-conquering warrior, was burned by a mere little monkey. Hearing such words, who would call them true?
जो अति सुभट सराहेहु रावन। सो सुग्रीव केर लघु धावन॥ चलइ बहुत सो बीर न होई। पठवा खबरि लेन हम सोई॥ ५ ॥

jo ati subhaṭa sarāhehu rāvana। so sugrīva kera laghu dhāvana॥ calai bahuta so vīra na hoī। paṭhavā khabari lena hama soī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
O Ravana, the one you praise as a great hero is merely a small errand-runner of Sugriva. He goes about a lot, but he is not a warrior. We sent him only to gather news.
सत्य नगरु कपि जारेउ बिनु प्रभु आयसु पाइ। फिरि न गयउ सुग्रीव पहिं तेहिं भय रहा लुकाइ॥ २३ (क) ॥

satya nagaru kapi jāreu binu prabhu āyasu pāi। phiri na gayau sugrīva pahiṃ tehiṃ bhaya rahā lukāi॥ 23 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Did that monkey really burn your city without obtaining his lord's command? It seems that out of fear he did not return to Sugriva and stayed hidden somewhere.
सत्य कहहि दसकंठ सब मोहि न सुनि कछु कोह। कोउ न हमारें कटक अस तो सन लरत जो सोह॥ २३ (ख) ॥

satya kahahiṃ dasakaṇṭha saba mohi na suni kachu koha। kou na hamāreṃ kaṭaka asa to sana larata jo soha॥ 23 (b) ॥
Meaning:
O Ravana, you speak only the truth; hearing you, I feel no anger at all. Truly, in our army there is no one who would shine in battle against you.
प्रीति बिरोध समान सन करिअ नीति असि आहि। जौं मृगपति बध मेडुकन्हि भल कि कहइ कोउताहि॥ २३ (ग) ॥

prīti birodha samāna sana kari'a nīti asi āhi। jaũ mṛgapati badha meḍukanhī bhala ki kahai koutāhi॥ 23 (c) ॥
Meaning:
Affection and enmity should be directed only toward one's equals; such is policy. If a lion kills frogs, would anyone call that a noble deed?
जद्यपि लघुता राम कहुँ तोहि बधें बड़ दोष। तदपि कठिन दसकंठ सुनु छत्र जाति कर रोष॥ २३ (घ) ॥

jadyapi laghutā rāma kahuṃ tohi badheṃ baḍa doṣa। tadapi kaṭhina dasakaṇṭha sunu chatra jāti kara roṣa॥ 23 (d) ॥
Meaning:
Although killing you would be beneath Shri Rama and would also be a great fault, still, O Ravana, listen: the wrath of the Kshatriya race is severe indeed.
बक्र उक्ति धनु बचन सर हृदय दहेउ रिपु कीस। प्रतिउत्तर सड़सिन्ह मनहुँ काढ़त भट दससीस॥ २३ (ङ) ॥

vakra ukti dhanu bacana sara hṛdaya daheu ripu kīsa। pratiuttara saḍasinha manahũ kāṛhat bhaṭa dasasīsa॥ 23 (ङ) ॥
Meaning:
Using the bow of sharp wit, Angada shot arrows of speech and burned up the enemy's heart. Heroic Ravana seems to be pulling those arrows out with tongs in the form of replies.
हँसि बोलेउ दसमौलि तब कपि कर बड़ गुन एक। जो प्रतिपालइ तासु हित करइ उपाय अनेक॥ २३ (च) ॥

haṃsi boleu dasamauli taba kapi kara baḍa guna eka। jo pratipālai tāsu hita karai upāya aneka॥ 23 (च) ॥
Meaning:
Then Ravana laughed and said, 'This is one great quality in a monkey: whoever nourishes him, he tries in many ways to do that person good.'
धन्य कीस जो निज प्रभु काजा। जहँ तहँ नाचइ परिहरि लाजा॥ नाचि कूदि करि लोग रिझाई। पति हित करइ धर्म निपुनाई॥ १ ॥

dhanya kīsa jo nija prabhu kājā। jahã tahã nācai parihari lājā॥ nāci kūdi kari loga rijhāī। pati hita karai dharma nipunāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Blessed is the monkey who, for his own lord's sake, dances everywhere without shame. By dancing and leaping, he delights others and serves his master's good. This is his skill in duty.
अंगद स्वामिभक्त तव जाती। प्रभु गुन कस न कहसि एहि भाँती॥ मैं गुन गाहक परम सुजाना। तव कटु रटनि करउँ नहिं काना॥ २ ॥

Angada, your very nature is loyal to your master. How then would you not speak of your lord's virtues in this way? I am a great appreciator of merit and exceedingly wise, so I do not pay heed to your bitter talk.
कह कपि तव गुन गाहकताई। सत्य पवनसुत मोहि सुनाई॥ बन बिधंसि सुत बधि पुर जारा। तदपि न तेहिं कछु कृत अपकारा॥ ३ ॥

Angada said, 'Hanuman told me of your true appreciation of merit. He destroyed the Ashoka grove, killed your son, and burned the city. Yet, because of your generous nature, you took it that he had done you no harm at all.'
सोइ बिचारि तव प्रकृति सुहाई। दसकंधर मैं कीन्हि ढिठाई॥ देखेउँ आइ जो कछु कपि भाषा। तुम्हरें लाज न रोष न माखा॥ ४ ॥

Considering that noble nature of yours, O Dashakandhara, I have been a little bold. Coming here, I have seen for myself that, as Hanuman said, you have neither shame, nor anger, nor irritation.
जौं असि मति पितु खाए कीसा। कहि अस बचन हँसा दससीसा॥ पितहि खाइ खातेउँ पुनि तोही। अबहीं समुझि परा कछु मोही॥ ५ ॥

Ravana said, 'Monkey, if that is your wisdom, no wonder you ate your father.' Speaking thus, he laughed. Angada replied, 'I would have eaten you too after eating my father, but just now something else has dawned on me.'
बालि बिमल जस भाजन जानी। हतउँ न तोहि अधम अभिमानी॥ कहु रावन रावन जग केते। मैं निज श्रवन सुने सुनु जेते॥ ६ ॥

Meaning:
You low and arrogant one! Knowing you to be the vessel of Bali's spotless fame, I do not kill you. O Ravana, tell me: how many Ravanas are there in the world? Listen to as many Ravanas as I have heard with my own ears.
बलिहि जितन एक गयउ पताला। राखेउ बाँधि सिसुन्ह हयसाला॥ खेलहिं बालक मारहिं जाई। दया लागि बलि दीन्ह छोड़ाई॥ ७ ॥

Meaning:
One Ravana had gone to the netherworld to conquer Bali, and the children tied him up in a stable. The children would play and go on beating him. Bali took pity and then set him free.
एक बहोरि सहसभुज देखा। धाइ धरा जिमि जंतु बिसेषा॥ कौतुक लागि भवन लै आवा। सो पुलस्ति मुनि जाइ छोड़ावा॥ ८ ॥

eka bahori sahasabhuja dekhā। dhāi dharā jimi jantu viseṣā॥ kautuka lāgi bhavana lai āvā। so pulasti muni jāi choṛāvā॥ 8 ॥

Then another Ravana was seen by Sahasrabahu, who ran and seized him, taking him to be some unusual creature. For amusement, he brought him home. Then the sage Pulastya went and freed him.
एक कहत मोहि सकुच अति रहा बालि कीं काँख। इन्ह महुँ रावन तैं कवन सत्य बदहि तजि माख॥ २४ ॥

सुनु सठ सोइ रावन बलसीला। हरगिरि जान जासु भुज लीला॥ जान उमापति जासु सुराई। पूजेउँ जेहि सिर सुमन चढ़ाई॥ १ ॥

Ravana said, 'Listen, fool! I am that mighty Ravana whose arm's prowess is known even to Mount Kailasa. Lord Shiva, consort of Uma, knows my valor, the one whom I worshiped again and again by offering flowers from my head.'
सिर सरोज निज करन्हि उतारी। पूजेउँ अमित बार त्रिपुरारी॥ भुज बिक्रम जानहिं दिगपाला। सठ अजहूँ जिन्ह कें उर साला॥ २ ॥

Plucking the lotus-like heads with my own hands, I have worshiped Tripurari Shiva countless times. Fool, the guardians of the directions know the might of my arms, and it still pricks their hearts to this day.

The elephants of the directions know the hardness of my chest. Their terrible tusks, whenever I have forced a clash with them, have never pierced my chest or left even a mark; instead, the moment they struck my chest, they broke like radishes.
जासु चलत डोलति इमि धरनी। चढ़त मत्त गज जिमि लघु तरनी॥ सोइ रावन जग बिदित प्रतापी। सुनेहि न श्रवन अलीक प्रलापी॥ ४ ॥

They, along with the army, churned up your pride, laid waste the Ashoka grove, burned the city, and killed your son—and yet returned safely. How, then, are Hanuman and the monkey-chief to be dismissed as mere monkeys, you villain?
सुनु रावन परिहरि चतुराई। भजसि न कृपासिंधु रघुराई॥ जौं खल भएसि राम कर द्रोही। ब्रह्म रुद्र सक राखि न तोही॥ १ ॥

Listen, O Ravana, and give up your cunning. Why do you not worship Raghurai, the ocean of compassion? O wicked one, if you become an enemy of Rama, even Brahma and Rudra will not be able to save you.
मूढ़ बृथा जनि मारसि गाला। राम बयर अस होइहि हाला॥ तव सिर निकर कपिन्ह के आगें। परिहहिं धरनि राम सर लागें॥ २ ॥

You fool, do not boast in vain. If you take enmity with Rama, such will be your fate that your many heads will fall to the ground before the monkeys as soon as Rama's arrows strike you.

Then bears and monkeys will play chaugān with your many heads as if they were balls. When Raghunath grows wrathful in battle, many terrible arrows will fly forth.

Then will such boasting of yours avail you? Think on this and worship the generous Rama. Hearing Angad's words, Ravana blazed with fury, as though ghee had been poured upon a great fire.

My brother is mighty Kumbhakaran, and my son is the famed enemy of Indra, Meghanad. And as for my valor, have you not even heard that I have conquered the whole world of the moving and unmoving?
सठ साखामृग जोरि सहाई। बाँधा सिंधु इहइ प्रभुताई॥ नाघहिं खग अनेक बारीसा। सूर न होहिं ते सुनु सब कीसा॥ १ ॥

You villain, Rama merely joined forces with monkeys and bound the sea; that is all his greatness is. Many birds can cross the sea as well, but that does not make them heroes. Listen, you foolish monkeys!

Then why does he send an envoy at all? Does he feel no shame in making peace with an enemy? First, look at my arms that churned Mount Kailas. Only then, you foolish monkey, may you praise your own lord.

Who is a hero like Ravana, who cut off his own heads with his own hands and, with great joy, offered them into the fire many times? Lord Gaurisha Shiva himself is witness to this.
जरत बिलोकेउँ जबहिं कपाला। बिधि के लिखे अंक निज भाला॥ नर कें कर आपन बध बाँची। हसेउँ जानि बिधि गिरा असाँची॥ १ ॥

Even after thinking of that, there is no fear in my heart, for I understand that old Brahma, in his dim-witted confusion, wrote it so. O fool, you cast aside shame and propriety and keep speaking to me again and again of some other warrior's strength.

The stories of cutting off heads and lifting Mount Kailas remained fixed in your mind, and that is why you have repeated them twenty times. Yet the might of those arms you have kept hidden in your heart, by which you conquered Sahasrabahu, Bali, and Vali.
सुनु मतिमंद देहि अब पूरा। काटें सीस कि होइअ सूरा॥ इंद्रजालि कहुँ कहिअ न बीरा। काटइ निज कर सकल सरीरा॥ ५ ॥

sunu matimanda dehi aba pūrā। kāṭeṃ sīsa ki hoi'a sūrā॥ indrajāli kahuṃ kahi'a na bīrā। kāṭai nija kara sakala sarīrā॥ 5 ॥

Listen, you dull-witted fool, enough now. Does cutting off one's head make one a hero? One who performs magic tricks is not called brave, even if he cuts his own body apart with his own hands.
जरहिं पतंग मोह बस भार बहहिं खर बृंद। ते नहिं सूर कहावहिं समुझि देखु मतिमंद॥ २९ ॥

jarahiṃ pataṃga moha basa bhāra bahahiṃ khara bṛnda। te nahiṃ sūra kahāvahiṃ samujhi dekhu matimanda॥ 29 ॥
Meaning:
Think and see, you dimwit. Moths, under the spell of desire, burn themselves in the fire; herds of donkeys carry burdens. But for that reason they are not called heroes.
अब जनि बतबढ़ाव खल करही। सुनु मम बचन मान परिहरही॥ दसमुख मैं न बसीठीं आयउँ। अस बिचारि रघुबीर पठायउँ॥ १ ॥

O wicked one, do not boast now. Hear my words and give up your pride! O ten-faced one, I have not come as a negotiator. Lord Raghubir has sent me after considering this.

The compassionate Lord Rama repeatedly says that a lion does not gain fame by killing a jackal. O fool, remembering the Lord's words in my heart, I have endured your harsh words.

sadā rogabasa santata krodhī। biṣnu bimukha śruti santa birodhī॥ tanu poṣaka niṃdaka agha khānī। jīvata sava sama caudaha prānī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
One who is always afflicted by disease, constantly angry, opposed to Vishnu, hostile to the Vedas and the saints, one who nourishes only his own body, a slanderer, and a mine of sin—these fourteen kinds of beings are like corpses even while alive.
अस बिचारि खल बधउँ न तोही। अब जनि रिस उपजावसि मोही॥ सुनि सकोप कह निसिचर नाथा। अधर दसन दसि मीजत हाथा॥ ३ ॥

Meaning:
O villain, considering this, I do not kill you. Do not now arouse anger in me. Hearing this, the lord of demons spoke in anger, biting his lips with his teeth and rubbing his hands.
रे कपि अधम मरन अब चहसी। छोटे बदन बात बड़ि कहसी॥ कटु जल्पसि जड़ कपि बल जाकें। बल प्रताप बुधि तेज न ताकें॥ ४ ॥

re kapi adham marana aba cahasī। choṭe badana bāta baṛi kahasī॥ kaṭu jalpasi jaḍa kapi bala jākeṃ। bala pratāpa budhi teja na tākeṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O vile monkey, you now seem to desire death. With such a small face, you speak such big words. O foolish monkey, the one whose strength you rely on has no strength, glory, intelligence, or radiance.
अगुन अमान जानि तेहि दीन्ह पिता बनबास। सोदुख अरु जुबती बिरह पुनि निसि दिन मम त्रास॥ ३१ (क) ॥

Knowing him to be without merit and without honor, his father gave him exile to the forest. On top of that are his sorrow, the separation from his wife, and my fear day and night.
जिन्ह के बल कर गर्ब तोहि अइसे मनुज अनेक। खाहिं निसाचरदिवस निसि मूढ़ समुझु तजि टेक॥ ३१ (ख) ॥

Meaning:
Those whose strength you boast of—many such humans are eaten by demons day and night. O fool, give up your obstinacy and understand.

Meaning:
When he insulted Rama, Angada, the best of monkeys, became extremely angry. For, as the scriptures say, whoever hears slander of Hari and Hara with his own ears incurs a sin equal to cow-killing.
कटकटान कपिकुंजर भारी। दुहु भुजदंड तमकि महि मारी॥ डोलत धरनि सभासद खसे। चले भाजि भय मारुत ग्रसे॥ २ ॥

kaṭakaṭāna kapikuṃjara bhārī। duhu bhujadaṃḍa tamaki mahi mārī॥ ḍolata dharani sabhāsada khase। cale bhāji bhaya māruta grase॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The great monkey-elephant Angada ground his teeth and, striking the earth fiercely with both arms, shook the ground. The earth trembled, the assembled courtiers fell down, and seized by fear they fled.
गिरत सँभारि उठा दसकंधर। भूतल परे मुकुट अति सुंदर॥ कछु तेहिं लै निज सिरन्हि सँवारे। कछु अंगद प्रभु पास पबारे॥ ३ ॥

girata saṃbhāri uṭhā dasakaṃdhara। bhūtala pare mukuṭa ati sundara॥ kachu tehiṃ lai nija siranhaṃ saṃvāre। kachu aṃgada prabhu pāsa pabāre॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana gathered himself and rose as he was falling. His very beautiful crowns fell onto the ground. Some he picked up and set upon his own heads, and some Angada picked up and threw before Lord Rama.
आवत मुकुट देखि कपि भागे। दिनहीं लूक परन बिधि लागे॥ की रावन करि कोप चलाए। कुलिस चारि आवत अति धाए॥ ४ ॥

Seeing the crowns coming, the monkeys ran away. They thought, 'Has a meteor shower begun in the daytime? Or has Ravana angrily hurled four thunderbolts that are rushing toward us?'

The Lord smiled and said, 'Do not fear in your heart. These are not meteors, nor thunderbolts, nor Ketu or Rahu. These are Ravana's crowns, sent flying by Angada, the son of Bali.'

Leaping up, Hanuman, son of the Wind, caught them with his hand and brought them and placed them near the Lord. The bears and monkeys watched the spectacle. Their radiance was like the sun.

Meaning:
There, Ravana, full of anger, spoke furiously to all, saying, 'Seize the monkey and, after seizing him, kill him.' Hearing this, Angada smiled.

Then Angada, the prince, said in anger, 'Are you not ashamed to boast like that? You shameless destroyer of your lineage, die by cutting your throat! Even after seeing my strength, does your chest not burst?'

You will reap the fruit of this when monkeys and bears strike you. The moment you speak such words—that Rama is human, O proud one—does your tongue not fall out?
सो नर क्यों दसकंध बालि बध्यो जेहिं एक सर। बीसहुँ लोचन अंध धिग तव जन्म कुजाति जड़॥ ३३ (क) ॥

so nara kyoṃ dasakaṃdha bāli badhyo jehiṃ eka sara। bīsahuṃ locana aṃdha dhiga tava janma kujāti jaḍa॥ 33 (a) ॥

O ten-necked one, how can the one who slew Bali with a single arrow be a mere man? O vile-born fool, O dull one, with twenty eyes you are still blind. Shame on your birth!
तव सोनित कीं प्यास तृषित राम सायक निकर। तजउँ तोहि तेहि त्रास कटु जल्पक निसिचर अधम॥ ३३ (ख) ॥

tava sonita kīṃ pyāsa tṛṣita rāma sāyaka nikara। tajauṃ tohī tehi trāsa kaṭu jalpaka nisicara adhama॥ 33 (b) ॥

Rama's arrows are thirsty for your blood. Fearing that, O foul-tongued low demon, I let you go.
मैं तव दसन तोरिबे लायक। आयसु मोहि न दीन्ह रघुनायक॥ असि रिस होति दसउ मुख तोरौं। लंका गहि समुद्र महँ बोरौं॥ १ ॥

maiṃ tava dasana toribe lāyaka। āyasu mohi na dīnha raghunāyaka॥ asi risa hoti dasau mukha torauṃ। laṃkā gahi samudra mahaṃ borauṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
I am capable of breaking your teeth. What can I do? Lord Raghunatha has not given me the order. Such anger rises in me that I would smash all ten of your mouths and seize Lanka, drowning it in the sea.
गूलरि फल समान तव लंका। बसहु मध्य तुम्ह जंतु असंका॥ मैं बानर फल खात न बारा। आयसु दीन्ह न राम उदारा॥ २ ॥

Your Lanka is like a gular fruit. All you creatures dwell inside it fearlessly. I am a monkey; what delay would there be in eating this fruit? But the generous Rama did not give such an order.
जुगुति सुनत रावन मुसुकाई। मूढ़ सिखिहि कहँ बहुत झुठाई॥ बालि न कबहुँ गाल अस मारा। मिलि तपसिन्ह तैं भएसि लबारा॥ ३ ॥

Hearing Angada's tactic, Ravana smiled and said, 'O fool, where did you learn such lying? Bali never struck such a blow. It seems you have become a liar by associating with ascetics.'

[Angada said:] 'O twenty-armed one! If I do not tear out all ten of your tongues, then truly I am a liar. Remembering the power of Lord Rama, Angada became angry and, in Ravana's assembly, took a vow and planted his foot firmly.'

[Kakabhushundiji says:] Those enemies of the gods (the demons) spring up again and rush forward. But O Garuda, enemy of serpents, the monkey's foot does not move from there, just as a misguided man cannot uproot the tree of delusion.

Meaning:
Millions of warriors, equal to Meghnad in strength, rose up in joy. They kept lunging, but the monkey's foot did not move; then, bowing their heads, they sat down again.
भूमि न छाँड़त कपि चरन देखत रिपु मद भाग। कोटि बिघ्न ते संत कर मन जिमि नीति न त्याग॥ ३४ (ख) ॥

Meaning:
Just as the mind of a saint does not abandon righteousness even when millions of obstacles arise, so too the monkey's foot does not leave the earth. Seeing this, the enemy's pride vanished.

Seeing Angada's strength, they all felt defeated in their hearts. Then, at Angada's challenge, Ravana himself rose up. When he tried to seize Angada's foot, the prince of Bali said, 'Grabbing my foot will not save you.'
गहसि न राम चरन सठ जाई। सुनत फिरा मन अति सकुचाई॥ भयउ तेजहत श्री सब गई। मध्य दिवस जिमि ससि सोहई॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
'O fool, why do you not go and hold Rama's feet?' Hearing this, he returned, greatly abashed in his mind. All his glory was gone. He became so radiant-less that he looked like the moon in the middle of the day.

He sat down on the throne with his head bowed, as though he had lost all his wealth. Lord Rama, the soul of the universe and master of life, how can one turned away from Him ever find peace?

[Shiva says:] O Uma, from the play of Rama's eyebrow the universe comes into being and then passes into destruction; He turns straw into thunderbolts and thunderbolts into straw. Tell me, how can the vow of His envoy ever fail?
पुनि कपि कही नीति बिधि नाना। मान न ताहि कालु निअराना॥ रिपु मद मथि प्रभु सुजसु सुनायो। यह कहि चल्यो बालि नृप जायो॥ ५ ॥

Again Angada spoke in many different ways of policy, but Ravana did not accept it, because his end was near. Crushing the enemy's pride, Angada praised the glory of Lord Rama, and then the son of King Bali departed, saying this.
हतौं न खेत खेलाइ खेलाई। तोहि अबहिं का करौं बड़ाई॥ प्रथमहिं तासु तनय कपि मारा। सो सुनि रावन भयउ दुखारा॥ ६ ॥
