Kumbhakarna's Battle and Liberation
Kumbhakarna displays terrifying might on the battlefield and throws the Vanara ranks into turmoil. At last, he meets Rama and attains liberation.

बंधु बचन सुनि चला बिभीषन। आयउ जहँ त्रैलोक बिभूषन॥ नाथ भूधराकार सरीरा। कुंभकरन आवत रनधीरा॥ १ ॥

bandhu bacana suni calā bibhīṣana। āyau jahaṃ trailoka vibhūṣana॥ nātha bhūdharākāra sarīrā। kuṃbhakarana āvata ranadhīrā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing his brother's words, Vibhishana returned and came to where Rama, the ornament of the three worlds, was. [He said:] O Lord, Kumbhakarna, the warrior of steadfast courage, with a body like a mountain, is coming.
एतना कपिन्ह सुना जब काना। किलकिलाइ धाए बलवाना॥ लिए उठाइ बिटप अरु भूधर। कटकटाइ डारहिं ता ऊपर॥ २ ॥

etanā kapinha sunā jaba kānā। kilakilāi dhāe balavānā॥ lie uṭhāi biṭapa aru bhūdhara। kaṭakaṭāi ḍārahim tā ūpara॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When the monkeys heard this, they rushed forward with loud cries. They lifted up trees and mountains and, grinding their teeth in anger, began hurling them upon him.
कोटि कोटि गिरि सिखर प्रहारा। करहिं भालु कपि एक एक बारा॥ मुर्यो न मनु तनु टर्यो न टार्यो। जिमि गज अर्क फलनि को मार्यो॥ ३ ॥

koṭi koṭi giri sikhara prahārā। karahiṃ bhālu kapi eka eka bārā॥ muryo na manu tanu ṭaryo na ṭāryo। jimi gaja arka phalani ko māryo॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The bears and monkeys struck him, one blow at a time, with the peaks of millions of mountains; yet neither his mind nor his body was shaken, just as an elephant is unaffected by blows from arka fruit.
तब मारुतसुत मुठिका हन्यो। पर्यो धरनि ब्याकुल सिर धुन्यो॥ पुनि उठि तेहिं मारेउ हनुमंता। घुर्मित भूतल परेउ तुरंता॥ ४ ॥

taba mārutasuta muṭhikā hanyo। paryo dharani byākula sira dhunyo॥ puni uṭhi tehiṃ māreu hanumaṃtā। ghurmita bhūtala pareu turantā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then Maruti's son struck him with a fist, and he fell to the earth in distress, beating his head. Rising again, he struck Hanuman, and Hanuman reeled and fell instantly to the ground.
पुनि नल नीलहि अवनि पछारेसि। जहँ तहँ पटकि पटकि भट डारेसि॥ चली बलीमुख सेन पराई। अति भय त्रसित न कोउ समुहाई॥ ५ ॥

puni nala nīlahi avani pachāresi। jahaṃ tahaṃ paṭaki paṭaki bhaṭa ḍāresi॥ calī balīmukha sena parāī। ati bhaya trāsita na kou samuhāī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Then he threw Nala and Nila to the ground and hurled the other warriors here and there, smashing them down again and again. The monkey army fled. All were greatly terrified, and no one came forward.
अंगदादि कपि मुरुछित करि समेत सुग्रीव। काँख दाबि कपिराज कहुँ चला अमित बल सींव॥ ६५ ॥

aṃgadādi kapi muruchita kari sameta sugrīva। kāṃkha dābi kapirāja kahuṃ calā amita bala sīṃva॥ 65 ॥
Meaning:
After making Angada and the other monkeys, together with Sugriva, swoon, that limitless warrior of immense strength carried away Sugriva, king of the monkeys, under his arm.
उमा करत रघुपति नरलीला। खेल गरुड़ जिमि अहिगन मीला॥ भृकुटि भंग जो कालहि खाई। ताहि कि सोहइ ऐसि लराई॥ १ ॥

umā karata raghupati naralīlā। khela garuḍa jimi ahigana mīlā॥ bhṛkuṭi bhaṃga jo kālahi khāī। tāhi ki sohai aisi larāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
(Shiva says:) O Uma, Rama is simply enacting a human play, just as Garuda would sport among a host of serpents. Does such a battle suit one who can devour even Death with a mere movement of the brow?
जग पावनि कीरति बिस्तरिहहिं। गाइ गाइ भवनिधि नर तरिहहिं॥ मुरुछा गइ मारुतसुत जागा। सुग्रीवहि तब खोजन लागा॥ २ ॥

jaga pāvani kīrati bistarihahiṃ। gāi gāi bhavanidhi nara tarihahiṃ॥ muruchā gai mārutasuta jāgā। sugrīvahi taba khojana lāgā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Through this, the Lord will spread that purifying glory, by singing which people will cross the ocean of existence. When the swoon passed, Maruti, Hanuman, awoke and then began searching for Sugriva.
सुग्रीवहु कै मुरुछा बीती। निबुकि गयउ तेहि मृतक प्रतीती॥ काटेसि दसन नासिका काना। गरजि अकास चलेउ तेहिं जाना॥ ३ ॥

sugrīvahu kai muruchā bītī। nibuki gayau tehiṃ mṛtaka pratītī॥ kāṭesi dasana nāsikā kānā। garaji akāsa caleu tehiṃ jānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Sugriva's swoon also passed, and he slipped down as if lifeless. Kumbhakarna took him for dead. He bit off Kumbhakarna's nose, ears, and teeth, and then roared and went up into the sky; only then did Kumbhakarna realize it.
गहेउ चरन गहि भूमि पछारा। अति लाघवँ उठि पुनि तेहि मारा॥ पुनि आयउ प्रभु पहिं बलवाना। जयति जयति जय कृपानिधाना॥ ४ ॥

gaheu carana gahi bhūmi pachārā। ati lāghavaṃ uṭhi puni tehi mārā॥ puni āyau prabhu pahiṃ balavānā। jayati jayati jaya kṛpānidhānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He seized Sugriva by the foot and threw him to the ground. Then Sugriva sprang up swiftly and struck him again. After that, the mighty Sugriva came to the Lord and cried, 'Victory, victory, victory to the ocean of mercy.'
नाक कान काटे जियँ जानी। फिरा क्रोध करि भइ मन ग्लानी॥ सहज भीम पुनि बिनु श्रुति नासा। देखत कपि दल उपजी त्रासा॥ ५ ॥

nāka kāna kāṭe jiyaṃ jānī। phirā krodha kari bhai mana glānī॥ sahaja bhīma puni binu śruti nāsā। dekhata kapi dala upajī trāsā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Realizing in his heart that his nose and ears had been cut off, he returned in rage and felt deep shame. He was frightening by nature, and now, without nose or ears, he became even more terrible. At the sight of him, fear arose in the monkey army.
जय जय जय रघुबंस मनि धाए कपि दै हूह। एकहि बार तासु पर छाड़ेन्हि गिरि तरु जूह॥ ६६ ॥

jaya jaya jaya raghubaṃsa mani dhāe kapi dai hūha। ekahi bāra tāsu para chāḍenhi giri taru jūha॥ 66 ॥
Meaning:
Crying 'Victory, victory, victory to the jewel of Raghu's line,' the monkeys rushed forward with a हूह cry, and all at once hurled heaps of mountains and trees upon him.
कुंभकरन रन रंग बिरुद्धा। सन्मुख चला काल जनु क्रुद्धा॥ कोटि कोटि कपि धरि धरि खाई। जनु टीड़ी गिरि गुहाँ समाई॥ १ ॥

kuṃbhakarana rana raṅga biruddhā। sanmukha calā kāla janu kruddhā॥ koṭi koṭi kapi dhari dhari khāī। janu ṭīḍī giri guhāṃ samāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
In the fervor of battle, Kumbhakarna advanced against them as if Death itself, angry, was coming face to face. He began seizing and devouring countless monkeys by the millions. [They were rushing into his mouth] as if locusts were swarming into a mountain cave.
कोटिन्ह गहि सरीर सन मर्दा। कोटिन्ह मीजि मिलव महि गर्दा॥ मुख नासा श्रवनन्हि कीं बाटा। निसरि पराहिं भालु कपि ठाटा॥ २ ॥

koṭinh gahi sarīra sana mardā। koṭinh mīji milava mahi gardā॥ mukha nāsā śravananhī kīṃ bāṭā। nisari parāhiṃ bhālu kapi ṭhāṭā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seizing millions, he crushed them with his body. Millions he ground with his hands and mixed into the dust of the earth. Crowds upon crowds of bears and monkeys [that had gone into his belly] were escaping again and again through his mouth, nose, and ears.
रन मद मत्त निसाचर दर्पा। बिस्व ग्रसिहि जनु एहि बिधि अर्पा॥ मुरे सुभट सब फिरहिं न फेरे। सूझ न नयन सुनहिं नहिं टेरे॥ ३ ॥

rana mada matta nisācara darpā। biswa grasihi janu ehi bidhi arpā॥ mure subhaṭa saba phirahiṃ na phere। sūjha na nayana sunahĩ nahiṃ ṭere॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Intoxicated with battle pride, the demon Kumbhakarna became so haughty as if the Creator had given him the whole world to devour. All the warriors fled; they would not even turn back when called. They could not see with their eyes, and they did not hear when summoned.
कुंभकरन कपि फौज बिडारी। सुनि धाई रजनीचर धारी॥ देखी राम बिकल कटकाई। रिपु अनीक नाना बिधि आई॥ ४ ॥

kuṃbhakarana kapi phauja biḍārī। suni dhāī rajanīcara dhārī॥ dekhī rāma bikal kaṭakāī। ripu anīka nānā bidhi āī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Kumbhakarna scattered the monkey army. Hearing this, the demon forces also rushed forward. Rama saw that his own army was in distress and that the enemy had arrived in many different formations.
सुनु सुग्रीव बिभीषन अनुज सँभारेहु सैन। मैं देखउँ खल बल दलहि बोले राजिवनैन॥ ६७ ॥

sunu sugrīva bibhīṣana anuja saṃbhārehu saina। maiṃ dekhauṃ khala bala dalahi bole rājivanaina॥ 67 ॥
Meaning:
Then lotus-eyed Rama said: 'O Sugriva! O Vibhishana! and O Lakshmana! Listen—take care of the army. I shall look at the strength and host of this villain.'
कर सारंग साजि कटि भाथा। अरि दल दलन चले रघुनाथा॥ प्रथम कीन्हि प्रभु धनुष टँकोरा। रिपु दल बधिर भयउ सुनि सोरा॥ १ ॥

kara sāraṅga sāji kaṭi bhāthā। ari dala dalana cale raghunāthā॥ prathama kīnhi prabhu dhanuṣa ṭaṃkorā। ripu dala bādhira bhayau suni sorā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
With the Saranga bow in hand and the quiver fastened at his waist, Lord Raghunatha set out to destroy the enemy ranks. First the Lord sounded the bow, and at that dreadful sound the enemy forces were struck deaf.
सत्यसंध छाँड़े सर लच्छा। कालसर्प जनु चले सपच्छा॥ जहँ तहँ चले बिपुल नाराचा। लगे कटन भट बिकट पिसाचा॥ २ ॥

satyasaṃdha chāṃḍe sara lacchā। kālasarpa janu cale sapacchā॥ jahāṃ tahāṃ cale bipula nārācā। lage kaṭana bhaṭa bikaṭa pisācā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then the truthful Rama released a lakh arrows. They flew as if winged serpents of death were moving forth. Arrows went everywhere, and the dreadful demon-warriors began to be cut down.
कटहिं चरन उर सिर भुजदंडा। बहुतक बीर होहिं सत खंडा॥ घुर्मि घुर्मि घायल महि परहीं। उठि संभारि सुभट पुनि लरहीं॥ ३ ॥

kaṭahiṃ carana ura sira bhujadaṃḍā। bahutaka bīra hohiṃ sata khaṃḍā॥ ghūrmi ghūrmi ghāyala mahi parahīṃ। uṭhi saṃbhāri subhaṭa puni larahīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Their legs, chests, heads, and arms were being cut off. Many warriors were split into a hundred pieces. Wounded, they fell to the ground while spinning about, and then the brave fighters rose again and fought on.
लागत बान जलद जिमि गाजहिं। बहुतक देखि कठिन सर भाजहिं॥ रुंड प्रचंड मुंड बिनु धावहिं। धरु धरु मारु मारु धुनि गावहिं॥ ४ ॥

lagata bāna jalada jimi gājahiṃ। bahutaka dekhi kaṭhina sara bhājahiṃ॥ ruṃḍa pracaṃḍa muṃḍa bina dhāvahiṃ। dharu dharu māru māru dhuni gāvahiṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
When the arrows struck them, they roared like clouds. Many fled as soon as they saw the terrible arrows. Headless, fierce trunks were running about, chanting the cry, 'Seize, seize; strike, strike!'
छन महुँ प्रभु के सायकन्हि काटे बिकट पिसाच। पुनि रघुबीर निषंग महुँ प्रबिसे सब नाराच॥ ६८ ॥

chana mahuṃ prabhu ke sāyakanhi kāṭe bikaṭa pisāca। puni raghubīra niṣaṃga mahuṃ prabise saba narāca॥ 68 ॥
Meaning:
In an instant the Lord's arrows cut down the dreadful demons. Then all those arrows returned and entered Lord Raghunatha's quiver again.
कुंभकरन मन दीख बिचारी। हति छन माझ निसाचर धारी॥ भा अति क्रुद्ध महाबल बीरा। कियो मृगनायक नाद गँभीरा॥ १ ॥

kuṃbhakarana mana dīkha bicārī। hati chana mājha nisācara dhārī॥ bhā ati kruddha mahābala bīrā। kiyo mṛganāyaka nāda gaṃbhīrā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Kumbhakarna reflected and saw that Rama had destroyed the demon forces in a moment. Then that mighty hero became exceedingly furious and uttered a deep lion-roar.
कोपि महीधर लेइ उपारी। डारइ जहँ मर्कट भट भारी॥ आवत देखि सैल प्रभु भारे। सरन्हि काटि रज सम करि डारे॥ २ ॥

kopi mahīdhara lei upārī। ḍārai jahaṃ markaṭa bhaṭa bhārī॥ āvata dekhi saila prabhu bhāre। saranhī kāṭi raja sama kari ḍāre॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
En anger he uprooted mountains and hurled them where the great monkey-warriors stood. Seeing the mountains coming, the Lord cut them with arrows and reduced them to dust.
पुनि धनु तानि कोपि रघुनायक। छाँड़े अति कराल बहु सायक॥ तनु महुँ प्रबिसि निसरि सर जाहीं। जिमि दामिनि घन माझ समाहीं॥ ३ ॥

puni dhanu tāni kopi raghunāyaka। chāṃḍe ati karāla bahu sāyaka॥ tanu mahuṃ praviśi nisari sara jāhīṃ। jimi dāmini ghana mājha samāhīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then Lord Raghunatha, drawing his bow in anger, released many dreadful arrows. They entered Kumbhakarna's body and passed out again [so swiftly that they seemed to vanish], like flashes of lightning disappearing into a cloud.
सोनित स्रवत सोह तन कारे। जनु कज्जल गिरि गेरु पनारे॥ बिकल बिलोकि भालु कपि धाए। बिहँसा जबहिं निकट कपि आए॥ ४ ॥

sonita sravata soha tana kāre। janu kajjala giri geru panāre॥ bikala biloki bhālu kapi dhāe। bihaṃsā jabahiṃ nikaṭa kapi āe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
With blood flowing from his dark body, he looked as if streams of red ochre were flowing from a mountain of lampblack. Seeing him in distress, the bears and monkeys rushed forward. As soon as they came near, he laughed.
महानाद करि गर्जा कोटि कोटि गहि कीस। महि पटकइ गजराज इव सपथ करइ दससीस॥ ६९ ॥

mahānāda kari garjā koṭi koṭi gahi kīsa। mahi paṭakai gajarāja iva sapatha karai dasasīsa॥ 69 ॥
Meaning:
And he roared with a terrible sound. Seizing monkeys by the millions, he began flinging them to the ground like an elephant lord, while invoking Ravana's name.
भागे भालु बलीमुख जूथा। बृकु बिलोकि जिमि मेष बरूथा॥ चले भागि कपि भालु भवानी। बिकल पुकारत आरत बानी॥ १ ॥

bhāge bhālu balīmukha jūthā। bṛku biloki jimi meṣa barūthā॥ cale bhāgi kapi bhālu bhavānī। bikal pukārata ārata bānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing this, the bands of bears and monkeys fled like a flock of sheep before a wolf. [Shiva says:] O Bhavani, the monkeys and bears ran away, crying out in distress with lamenting voices.
यह निसिचर दुकाल सम अहई। कपिकुल देस परन अब चहई॥ कृपा बारिधर राम खरारी। पाहि पाहि प्रनतारति हारी॥ २ ॥

yaha nisicara dukāla sama ahai। kapikula desa parana aba cahai॥ kr̥pā bāridhara rāma kharārī। pāhi pāhi pranatārati hārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
[They said:] This demon is like a famine, now seeking to fall upon the land of the monkey clan. O Rama, cloud-bearer of compassion! O destroyer of Khara! O remover of the distress of the surrendered! Protect us, protect us!
सकरुन बचन सुनत भगवाना। चले सुधारि सरासन बाना॥ राम सेन निज पाछें घाली। चले सकोप महा बलसाली॥ ३ ॥

sakaruna bacana sunata bhagavānā। cale sudhāri sarāsana bānā॥ rāma senā nija pācheṃ ghālī। cale sakopa mahā balasālī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing those compassionate words, the Lord took up his bow and arrows and set out. Mighty Rama placed the army behind him and advanced alone in anger.
खैंचि धनुष सर सत संधाने। छूटे तीर सरीर समाने॥ लागत सर धावा रिस भरा। कुधर डगमगत डोलति धरा॥ ४ ॥

khaṃci dhanuṣa sara sata saṃdhāne। chūṭe tīra sarīra samāne॥ lagata sara dhāvā risa bharā। kudhara ḍagamagata ḍolati dharā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He drew the bow and fitted a hundred arrows. The arrows flew and entered his body. As soon as the arrows struck, he ran forward in rage. The mountains shook, and the earth itself trembled.
लीन्ह एक तेहिं सैल उपाटी। रघुकुलतिलक भुजा सोइ काटी॥ धावा बाम बाहु गिरि धारी। प्रभु सोउ भुजा काटि महि पारी॥ ५ ॥

līnha eka tehiṃ saila upāṭī। raghukulatilaka bhujā soī kāṭī॥ dhāvā bāma bāhu giri dhārī। prabhu soū bhujā kāṭi mahi pārī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
He uprooted a mountain. The ornament of Raghu's line, Rama, cut off that very arm. Then he rushed forward carrying the mountain in his left arm. The Lord cut off that arm too and cast it to the ground.
काटें भुजा सोह खल कैसा। पच्छहीन मंदर गिरि जैसा॥ उग्र बिलोकनि प्रभुहि बिलोका। ग्रसन चहत मानहुँ त्रैलोका॥ ६ ॥

kāṭeṃ bhujā soha khala kaisā। paccahīna maṃdara giri jaisā॥ ugra bilokani prabhuhiṃ bilokā। grasana cahata mānahuṃ trailokā॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
With his arms cut off, how strange and pitiful that villain looked, like Mount Mandara without wings. He gazed at the Lord with a fierce look, as if he wished to swallow the three worlds.
करि चिक्कार घोर अति धावा बदनु पसारि। गगन सिद्ध सुर त्रासित हा हा हेति पुकारि॥ ७० ॥

kari cikkāra ghora ati dhāvā badanu pasarāri। gagana siddha sura trāsita hā hā heti pukāri॥ 70 ॥
Meaning:
He rushed forward, roaring terribly and gaping his mouth wide. In the sky, the Siddhas and gods were terrified and cried out, 'Ha! Ha!'
सभय देव करुनानिधि जान्यो। श्रवन प्रजंत सरासनु तान्यो॥ बिसिख निकर निसिचर मुख भरेऊ। तदपि महाबल भूमि न परेऊ॥ १ ॥

sabhaya deva karuṇānidhi jānyo। śravana prajanta sarāsanu tānyo॥ bisikha nikara nisicara mukha bhareū। tadapi mahābala bhūmi na pareū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The compassionate Lord saw that the gods were frightened. Then He drew His bow up to His ear and filled the demon's mouth with a shower of arrows. Yet that mighty warrior did not fall to the ground.
सरन्हि भरा मुख सन्मुख धावा। काल त्रोन सजीव जनु आवा॥ तब प्रभु कोपि तीब्र सर लीन्हा। धर ते भिन्न तासु सिर कीन्हा॥ २ ॥

saranhi bharā mukha sanmukha dhāvā। kāla trona sajīva janu āvā॥ taba prabhu kopi tībra sara līnhā। dhara te bhinna tāsu sira kīnhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
With arrows filling his mouth, he rushed straight toward the Lord, as if Death himself, alive and embodied as a quiver, were coming. Then the Lord, in anger, took a piercing arrow and severed his head from his body.
सो सिर परेउ दसानन आगें। बिकल भयउ जिमि फनि मनि त्यागें॥ धरनि धसइ धर धाव प्रचंडा। तब प्रभु काटि कीन्ह दुइ खंडा॥ ३ ॥

so sira pareu dasānana āgẽ। bikala bhayau jimi phani mani tyāgẽ॥ dharani dhasai dhara dhāva pracaṇḍā। taba prabhu kāṭi kīnha dui khaṇḍā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
That head fell before Ravana. Seeing it, Ravana became bewildered, like a serpent bereft of its jewel. The fierce trunk rushed on, making the earth seem to sink beneath it. Then the Lord cut it into two pieces.
परे भूमि जिमि नभ तें भूधर। हेठ दाबि कपि भालु निसाचर॥ तासु तेज प्रभु बदन समाना। सुर मुनि सबहिं अचंभव माना॥ ४ ॥

pare bhūmi jimi nabha tẽ bhūdhara। heṭha dābi kapi bhālu nisācara॥ tāsu teja prabhu badana samānā। sura muni sabahiṃ acaṃbhava mānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Pressing down on the monkeys, bears, and demons beneath them, the two pieces fell on the earth like two mountains dropped from the sky. His radiance entered the face of Lord Shri Ramchandra. Seeing this, all the gods and sages were astonished.
सुर दुंदुभीं बजावहिं हरषहिं। अस्तुति करहिं सुमन बहु बरषहिं॥ करि बिनती सुर सकल सिधाए। तेही समय देवरिषि आए॥ ५ ॥

sura duṃdubhīṃ bajāvahiṃ haraṣahiṃ। astuti karahiṃ sumana bahu baraṣahiṃ॥ kari binatī sura sakala sidhāe। tehī samaya devarṣi āe॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
The gods sounded their kettledrums, rejoiced, and offered praise while showering many flowers. After making their request, all the gods departed. At that very time, the divine sage Narada arrived.
गगनोपरि हरि गुन गन गाए। रुचिर बीररस प्रभु मन भाए॥ बेगि हतहु खल कहि मुनि गए। राम समर महि सोभत भए॥ ६ ॥

gaganopari hari guna gana gāe। rucira bīrarasa prabhu mana bhāe॥ begi hatahu khala kahi muni gae। rāma samara mahi sobhata bhae॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
From above in the sky, he sang the Lord Hari's beautiful praises filled with heroic sentiment, which greatly delighted the Lord's heart. The sage departed saying, 'Now slay the wicked one quickly.' At that moment, Shri Ramchandra appeared splendid on the field of battle.
संग्राम भूमि बिराज रघुपति अतुल बल कोसल धनी। श्रम बिंदु मुख राजीव लोचन अरुन तन सोनित कनी॥ भुज जुगल फेरत सर सरासन भालु कपि चहु दिसि बने। कह दास तुलसी कहि न सक छबि सेष जेहि आनन घने॥

saṃgrāma bhūmi birāja raghupati atula bala kosala dhanī। śrama bindu mukha rājīva locana aruna tana sonita kanī॥ bhuja jugala ferata sara sarāsana bhālu kapi cahu disi bane। kaha dāsa tulasī kahi na saka chabi seṣa jehi ānana ghane॥
Meaning:
On the battlefield shines Lord Raghupati, the ruler of Kosala, with incomparable strength. Beads of sweat glisten on His face; His lotus-like eyes are slightly reddened; specks of blood mark His body; and with both hands He moves the bow and arrows. Bears and monkeys adorn all four directions. Tulsidas says that even Shesha, with his many mouths, cannot describe such beauty.
निसिचर अधम मलाकर ताहि दीन्ह निज धाम। गिरिजा ते नर मंदमति जे न भजहिं श्रीराम॥ ७१ ॥

nisi cara adhama malākara tāhi dīnha nija dhāma। girijā te nara mandamati je na bhajahiṃ śrīrāma॥ 71 ॥
Meaning:
[Shiva says:] O Girija, even Kumbhakarna, who was a lowly demon and a mine of sin, was granted the supreme abode by Shri Ramji! Therefore, those men are surely dull-witted who do not worship Shri Ram.
दिन के अंत फिरीं द्वौ अनी। समर भई सुभटन्ह श्रम घनी॥ राम कृपाँ कपि दल बल बाढ़ा। जिमि तृन पाइ लाग अति डाढ़ा॥ १ ॥

dina ke anta firīṃ dvau anī। samara bhaī subhaṭanha śrama ghanī॥ rāma kṛpāṃ kapi dala bala bāṛhā। jimi tṛna pāi lāga ati dāṛhā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
At the end of the day, both armies withdrew. The warriors were greatly exhausted by the battle; but by Shri Ramji's grace, the strength of the monkey army increased just as fire blazes up when it finds dry grass.
छीजहिं निसिचर दिनु अरु राती। निज मुख कहें सुकृत जेहि भाँती॥ बहु बिलाप दसकंधर करई। बंधु सीस पुनि पुनि उर धरई॥ २ ॥

chījahiṃ nisi cara dinu aru rātī। nija mukha kahẽ sukṛta jehi bhāṃtī॥ bahu vilāpa dasakaṃdhara karī। bandhu sīsa puni puni ura dharī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Meanwhile the demons are diminishing day and night, just as merit is reduced when it is spoken of by one's own mouth. Ravana is grieving greatly. Again and again he holds his brother Kumbhakarna's head to his chest.
रोवहिं नारि हृदय हति पानी। तासु तेज बल बिपुल बखानी॥ मेघनाद तेहि अवसर आयउ। कहि बहु कथा पिता समुझायउ॥ ३ ॥

rovahiṃ nāri hṛdaya hati pānī। tāsu teja bala bipula bakhānī॥ meghanāda tehī avasara āyau। kahi bahu kathā pitā samujhāyau॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The women were weeping, striking their breasts with their hands, while extolling his great splendor and strength. At that very moment Meghnada arrived and, speaking at length, consoled his father.
देखेहु कालि मोरि मनुसाई। अबहिं बहुत का करौं बड़ाई॥ इष्टदेव सैं बल रथ पायउँ। सो बल तात न तोहि देखायउँ॥ ४ ॥

dekhehu kāli mori manusāī। abahiṃ bahuta kā karaũ baṛāī॥ iṣṭadeva saiṃ bala ratha pāyauṃ। so bala tāta na tohi dekhāyauṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
And he said, 'You shall see my valor tomorrow. Why boast so much now? Father, the strength and the chariot I received from my chosen deity—I had not shown you that strength and that chariot until now.'
एहि बिधि जल्पत भयउ बिहाना। चहुँ दुआर लागे कपि नाना॥ इत कपि भालु काल सम बीरा। उत रजनीचर अति रनधीरा॥ ५ ॥

ehi bidhi jalpata bhayau bihānā। cahuṃ duāra lāge kapi nānā॥ ita kapi bhālu kāla sama bīrā। uta rajanīcara ati ranhīrā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
While he was boasting in this way, dawn broke. At Lanka's four gates, many monkeys took their stand. On this side are the monkeys and bears, brave as Death itself; on the other, the demons, supremely fierce in battle.
