Rama Tells Kaushalya of His Exile
Rama informs Mother Kaushalya of the exile and speaks to her of patience and dharma. Though her heart is overcome with grief, she recognizes her son's noble resolve.

रघुकुल तिलक जोरि दोउ हाथा। मुदित मातु पद नायउ माथा॥ दीन्हि असीस लाइ उर लीन्हे। भूषन बसन निछावरि कीन्हे॥ १ ॥

raghukula tilaka jori doū hāthā। mudita mātu pada nāyau māthā॥ dīnhi asīsa lāi ura līnhe। bhūṣana basana nichāvari kīnhe॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The ornament of Raghu's line, Shri Ramchandra, joined both hands and joyfully bowed his head at his mother's feet. The mother blessed him, took him into her heart, and showered him with ornaments and garments.
बार बार मुख चुंबति माता। नयन नेह जलु पुलकित गाता॥ गोद राखि पुनि हृदयँ लगाए। स्रवत प्रेमरस पयद सुहाए॥ २ ॥

bāra bāra mukha cumbati mātā। nayana neha jalu pulakita gātā॥ god rākh(i) puni hṛdayaṃ lāe। sravata premarasa payada suhāe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The mother kept kissing Shri Ramchandra's face again and again. Tears of love filled her eyes, and her whole body was thrilled with joy. Placing Shri Ram in her lap and then embracing him to her heart again, she seemed to overflow with the nectar of love.
प्रेमु प्रमोदु न कछु कहि जाई। रंक धनद पदबी जनु पाई॥ सादर सुंदर बदनु निहारी। बोली मधुर बचन महतारी॥ ३ ॥

premu pramodu na kachu kahi jāī। raṅka dhanada padabī janu pāī॥ sādara sundara badanu nihārī। bolī madhura bacana mahatārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Their love and delight cannot be described. It was as if a beggar had obtained the station of Kubera, the god of riches. Gazing respectfully at his beautiful face, the mother spoke sweet words:
कहहु तात जननी बलिहारी। कबहिं लगन मुद मंगलकारी॥ सुकृत सील सुख सीवँ सुहाई। जनम लाभ कइ अवधि अघाई॥ ४ ॥

kahahu tāta jananī balihārī। kabahiṃ lagana muda maṅgalakārī॥ sukṛta sīla sukha sīvaṃ suhāī। janama lābha kai avadhi aghāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Dear son, I am utterly devoted to you; tell me, when is that joy-bringing and auspicious moment, that lovely boundary of my merit, virtue, and happiness, the full attainment of the boon of birth?
जेहि चाहत नर नारि सब अति आरत एहि भाँति। जिमिचातक चातकि तृषित बृष्टि सरद रितु स्वाति॥ ५२ ॥

jehi cāhata nara nāri saba ati ārata ehi bhāṃti। jimi cātaka cātaki tṛṣita bṛṣṭi sarada ritu svāti॥ 52 ॥
Meaning:
That is the moment desired by all men and women in intense longing, just as the thirsty chataka bird and chataki long for the rain of the Swati star in the autumn season.
तात जाउँ बलि बेगि नहाहू। जो मन भाव मधुर कछु खाहू॥ पितु समीप तब जाएहु भैआ। भइ बड़ि बार जाइ बलि मैआ॥ १ ॥

tāta jāuṃ bali begi nahāhū। jo mana bhāva madhura kachu khāhū॥ pitu samīpa taba jāehu bhaiā। bhai baḍi bāra jāi bali maiyā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Dear son, I beseech you, bathe quickly and eat something sweet if you like. Brother, then go to your father. It has become very late; your mother is devoted to you.
मातु बचन सुनि अति अनुकूला। जनु सनेह सुरतरु के फूला॥ सुख मकरंद भरे श्रियमूला। निरखि राम मनु भवँरु न भूला॥ २ ॥

mātu bacana suni ati anukūlā। janu saneha surataru ke phūlā॥ sukha makaraṃda bhare śriyamūlā। nirakhi rāma manu bhavaṃru na bhūlā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the mother's most affectionate words—words that were like flowers of the wish-fulfilling tree of love, filled with the nectar of happiness, and rooted in Sri (prosperity)—Rama's mind, like a bee, did not wander away from them.
धरम धुरीन धरम गति जानी। कहेउ मातु सन अति मृदु बानी॥ पिताँ दीन्ह मोहि कानन राजू। जहँ सब भाँति मोर बड़ काजू॥ ३ ॥

dharama dhurīna dharama gati jānī। kheu mātu sana ati mṛdu bānī॥ pitāṃ dīnha mohi kānana rājū। jahaṃ saba bhāṃti mora baḍa kājū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Rama, the foremost in dharma and knowing the path of dharma, spoke to his mother in very gentle words: 'Mother, my father has given me the kingdom of the forest, where in every way my task is to be fulfilled.'
आयसु देहि मुदित मन माता। जेहिं मुद मंगल कानन जाता॥ जनि सनेह बस डरपसि भोरें। आनँदु अंब अनुग्रह तोरें॥ ४ ॥

āyasu dehi mudita mana mātā। jehiṃ muda maṅgala kānana jātā॥ jani saneha basa ḍarapasi bhoreṃ। ānaṃdu aṃba anugraha toreṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Mother, grant me your permission with a glad heart, so that my journey to the forest may be filled with joy and auspiciousness. Out of affection, do not let yourself be afraid even for a moment. Mother, by your grace there will be only happiness.
बरष चारिदस बिपिन बसि करि पितु बचन प्रमान। आइ पाय पुनि देखिहउँ मनु जनि करसि मलान॥ ५३ ॥

baraṣa cāridasa bipina basi kari pitu bacana pramāna। āi pāya puni dekhihaum manu jani karasi malāna॥ 53 ॥
Meaning:
Having lived in the forest for fourteen years and fulfilled my father's command, I shall return and see your feet again; do not let your mind grow sad.
बचन बिनीत मधुर रघुबर के। सर सम लगे मातु उर करके॥ सहमि सूखि सुनि सीतलि बानी। जिमि जवास परें पावस पानी॥ १ ॥

bacana binīta madhura raghubara ke। sara sama lage mātu ura karake॥ sahami sūkhi suni sītali bānī। jimi javāsa pareṃ pāvasa pānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The humble and sweet words of Raghuvara pierced Mother's heart like arrows. Hearing that cool speech, Kausalya was startled and withered, just as javasa grass dries up when monsoon rain falls on it.
कहि न जाइ कछु हृदय बिषादू। मनहुँ मृगी सुनि केहरि नादू॥ नयन सजल तन थर थर काँपी। माजहि खाइ मीन जनु मापी॥ २ ॥

kahi na jāi kachu hṛdaya biṣādū। manahuṃ mṛgī suni kehari nādū॥ nayana sajala tana thara thara kāṃpī। mājahi khāi mīna janu māpī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The grief in her heart cannot be described. It was as if a doe, hearing the roar of a lion, had become helpless. Tears filled her eyes, and her body trembled all over, as though she were a fish tossed in distress.
धरि धीरजु सुत बदनु निहारी। गदगद बचन कहति महतारी॥ तात पितहि तुम्ह प्रान पिआरे। देखि मुदित नित चरित तुम्हारे॥ ३ ॥

dhari dhīraju suta badanu nihārī। gadgada bacana kahati mahatārī॥ tāta pitahi tumha prāna piāre। dekhi mudita nita carita tumhāre॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Taking courage and looking at her son's face, the mother began to speak in a choked voice: 'Dear son, you are as dear to your father as life itself. Seeing your conduct, he was always delighted.'
राजु देन कहुँ सुभ दिन साधा। कहेउ जान बन केहिं अपराधा॥ तात सुनावहु मोहि निदानू। को दिनकर कुल भयउ कृसानू॥ ४ ॥

rāju dena kahuṃ subha dina sādhā। kheu jāna bana kehiṃ aparādhā॥ tāta sunāvahu mohi nidānū। ko dinakara kula bhayu kr̥sānū॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
They had fixed an auspicious day for giving you the kingdom; then for what offense have they now sent you to the forest? Dear son, tell me the reason. Who has become the fire to burn the solar race?
निरखि राम रुख सचिवसुत कारनु कहेउ बुझाइ। सुनि प्रसंगु रहि मूक जिमि दसा बरनि नहिं जाइ॥ ५४ ॥

nirakhi rāma rukha sacivasuta kāranu kaheu bujhāi। suni prasaṅgu rahi mūka jimi dasā barani nahiṃ jāi॥ 54 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Rama's mood, the minister's son explained the whole matter. Hearing that account, she remained like one struck dumb; her condition cannot be described.
राखि न सकइ न कहि सक जाहू। दुहूँ भाँति उर दारुन दाहू॥ लिखत सुधाकर गा लिखि राहू। बिधि गति बाम सदा सब काहू॥ १ ॥

rākhi na sakai na kahi saka jāhū। duhūṃ bhāṃti ura dāruna dāhū॥ likhata sudhākara gā likhi rāhū। bidhi gati bāma sadā saba kāhū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
She could neither hold you back nor say, 'Go to the forest.' In either case, a fierce burning raged in her heart. She thought: fate's course is always crooked for everyone—the moon begins to be written, and Rahu is written instead.
धरम सनेह उभयँ मति घेरी। भइ गति साँप छुछुंदरि केरी॥ राखउँ सुतहि करउँ अनुरोधू। धरमु जाइ अरु बंधु बिरोधू॥ २ ॥

dharama saneha ubhayaṃ mati gherī। bhai gati sāṃpa chuchuṃdari kerī॥ rākhaum suta hi karauṃ anurodhū। dharamu jāi aru bandhu virodhū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Dharma and affection both surrounded Kausalya's mind. Her condition became like that of a snake and the ichneumon. She thought that if she kept her son by insistence, dharma would be lost and there would be conflict among brothers;
कहउँ जान बन तौ बड़ि हानी। संकट सोच बिबस भइ रानी॥ बहुरि समुझि तिय धरमु सयानी। रामु भरतु दोउ सुत सम जानी॥ ३ ॥

kahauṃ jāna bana tau baḍi hānī। saṃkata soca bibasa bhai rānī॥ bahuri samujhi tiya dharamu sayānī। rāmu bharatu dou suta sama jānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
And if I tell him to go to the forest, it will cause great loss. Falling into such a crisis of dharma, the queen became overpowered by thought. Then wise Kausalya, understanding a woman's dharma and regarding Rama and Bharata as equally her sons—
सरल सुभाउ राम महतारी। बोली बचन धीर धरि भारी॥ तात जाउँ बलि कीन्हेहु नीका। पितु आयसु सब धरमक टीका॥ ४ ॥

sarala subhāu rāma mahatārī। bolī bacana dhīra dhari bhārī॥ tāta jāuṃ bali kīnhehu nīkā। pitu āyasu saba dharamaka ṭīkā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Rama's mother, simple in nature, spoke these words with great composure: 'Dear son, I am devoted to you; you have done well. Obedience to a father's command is the crown of all dharma.'
राजु देन कहि दीन्ह बनु मोहि न सो दुख लेसु। तुम्ह बिनु भरतहि भूपतिहि प्रजहि प्रचंड कलेसु॥ ५५ ॥

rāju dena kahi dīnha banu mohi na so dukha lesu। tumha binu bharatahi bhūpatihi prajahi pracaṃḍa kalesu॥ 55 ॥
Meaning:
He said he would give the kingdom, yet gave you the forest; I feel not the slightest sorrow for that. [My sorrow is that] without you, Bharata, the king, and the people will suffer terrible distress.
जौं केवल पितु आयसु ताता। तौ जनि जाहु जानि बड़ि माता॥ जौं पितु मातु कहेउ बन जाना। तौ कानन सत अवध समाना॥ १ ॥

jauṃ kevala pitu āyasu tātā। tau jani jāhu jāni baḍi mātā॥ jauṃ pitu mātu kaheu bana jānā। tau kānana sata avadha samānā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Dear son, if it is only your father's command, then do not go to the forest, considering your mother greater. But if both father and mother have told you to go to the forest, then the forest is as good as hundreds of Ayodhyas for you.
पितु बनदेव मातु बनदेवी। खग मृग चरन सरोरुह सेवी॥ अंतहुँ उचित नृपहि बनबासू। बय बिलोकि हियँ होइ हराँसू॥ २ ॥

pitu banadeva mātu banadevī। khaga mṛga carana saroruha sevī॥ aṃtahuṃ ucita nṛpahi banabāsū। baya biloki hiyaṃ hoi harāṃsū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The forest gods will be your father and the forest goddesses your mother. The birds and beasts there will be servants at your lotus feet. For a king, living in the forest is fitting in the end. Only your tender age makes the heart feel sorrow.
बड़भागी बनु अवध अभागी। जो रघुबंसतिलक तुम्ह त्यागी॥ जौं सुत कहौं संग मोहि लेहू। तुम्हरे हृदयँ होइ संदेहू॥ ३ ॥

baḍabhāgī banu avadha abhāgī। jo raghubaṃsatilaka tumha tyāgī॥ jauṃ suta kahauṃ saṃga mohi lehū। tumhare hṛdayaṃ hoi saṃdehū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O ornament of the Raghu line, the forest is most fortunate, and Ayodhya is unfortunate, since you have abandoned it. Son, if I were to say, 'Take me along too,' doubt would arise in your heart [that I am using this as an excuse to stop you].
पूत परम प्रिय तुम्ह सबही के। प्रान प्रान के जीवन जी के॥ ते तुम्ह कहहु मातु बन जाऊँ। मैं सुनि बचन बैठि पछिताऊँ॥ ४ ॥

pūta parama priya tumha sabahī ke। prāna prāna ke jīvana jī ke॥ te tumha kahahu mātu bana jāūṃ। maiṃ suni bacana baiṭhi pachi tāūṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Son, you are supremely dear to everyone, the life of our lives, the very life-breath of life. And yet you say, 'Mother, I shall go to the forest,' and I, hearing your words, would sit here and repent.
यह बिचारि नहिं करउँ हठ झूठ सनेहु बढ़ाइ। मानि मातु कर नात बलि सुरति बिसरि जनि जाइ॥ ५६ ॥

yaha bicāri nahiṃ karauṃ haṭha jhūṭha sanehu baḍhāi। māni mātu kara nāta bali surati bisari jani jāi॥ 56 ॥
Meaning:
Thinking this, I do not stubbornly pretend a false affection. Son, I beseech you: honoring the bond of mother and child, do not let my remembrance slip from your mind.
देव पितर सब तुम्हहि गोसाईं। राखहुँ पलक नयन की नाईं॥ अवधि अंबु प्रिय परिजन मीना। तुम्ह करुनाकर धरम धुरीना॥ १ ॥

deva pitara saba tumhahi gosāīṃ। rākhahuṃ palaka nayana kī nāīṃ॥ avadhi ambu priya parijana mīnā। tumha karunākara dharama dhurīnā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Gosain! May all the gods and ancestors protect you just as the eyelids protect the eyes. Your period of exile is the water, your dear relatives are the fish. You are the source of compassion and the bearer of the pillar of righteousness.
अस बिचारि सोइ करहु उपाई। सबहि जिअत जेहिं भेंटहु आई॥ जाहु सुखेन बनहि बलि जाऊँ। करि अनाथ जन परिजन गाऊँ॥ २ ॥

asa bicāri soi karahu upāī। sabahi jiata jehīṃ bheṭahu āī॥ jāhu sukhena banahi bali jāūṃ। kari anātha jana parijana gāūṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Considering this, make the one plan by which you may meet everyone while they are still alive. I would gladly sacrifice myself; leaving the servants, family, and village orphaned, go to the forest in peace.
सब कर आजु सुकृत फल बीता। भयउ कराल कालु बिपरीता॥ बहुबिधि बिलपि चरन लपटानी। परम अभागिनि आपुहि जानी॥ ३ ॥

saba kara āju sukṛta phala bītā। bhayau karāla kālu biparītā॥ bahubidhi bilapi carana lapaṭānī। parama abhāgini āpuhi jānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Today the fruit of everyone's merit has been exhausted! The cruel age has turned against us. Thus, weeping bitterly and regarding herself as utterly unfortunate, the mother clung to Shri Ramachandra's feet.
दारुन दुसह दाहु उर ब्यापा। बरनि न जाहिं बिलाप कलापा॥ राम उठाइ मातु उर लाई। कहि मृदु बचन बहुरि समुझाई॥ ४ ॥

dāruna dusaha dāhu ura byāpā। barani na jāhiṃ bilāpa kalāpā॥ rāma uṭhāi mātu ura lāī। kahi mṛdu bacana bahuri samujhāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
A terrible, unbearable anguish filled the heart. The many kinds of lamentation at that time cannot be described. Rama lifted his mother into his embrace and, speaking gentle words, consoled her.
समाचार तेहि समय सुनि सीय उठी अकुलाइ। जाइ सासु पद कमल जुग बंदि बैठि सिरु नाइ॥ ५७ ॥

samācāra tehi samaya suni sīya uṭhī akulāi। jāi sāsu pada kamala juga bandi baiṭhi siru nāi॥ 57 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing this news at that very moment, Sita became distraught. She went to her mother-in-law, bowed to her two lotus feet, and sat down with her head lowered.
दीन्हि असीस सासु मृदु बानी। अति सुकुमारि देखि अकुलानी॥ बैठि नमितमुख सोचति सीता। रूप रासि पति प्रेम पुनीता॥ १ ॥

dīnhi asīsa sāsu mṛdu bānī। ati sukumāri dekhi akulānī॥ baiṭhi namitamukha socati sītā। rūpa rāsi pati prema punītā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Her mother-in-law gave her a blessing in gentle words. Seeing Sita so delicate, she became distressed. Sita, a treasure of beauty and pure in her devotion to her husband, sat with lowered face, thinking.
चलन चहत बन जीवननाथू। केहि सुकृती सन होइहि साथू॥ की तनु प्रान कि केवल प्राना। बिधि करतबु कछु जाइ न जाना॥ २ ॥

calana cahata bana jīvananāthū। kehi sukṛtī sana hoihi sāthū॥ kī tanu prāna ki kevala prānā। bidhi karatabu kachu jāi na jānā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord of life, the beloved husband, wishes to go to the forest. Let us see which fortunate one will accompany him—will body and life go together, or only life alone? The workings of fate cannot be known.
चारु चरन नख लेखति धरनी। नूपुर मुखर मधुर कबि बरनी॥ मनहुँ प्रेम बस बिनती करहीं। हमहि सीय पद जनि परिहरहीं॥ ३ ॥

cāru carana nakha lekhati dharanī। nūpura mukhara madhura kabi baranī॥ manahuṃ prema basa binitī karahīṃ। hamahi sīya pada jani pariharahīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Sita is tracing the earth with the nails of her beautiful feet. As the anklets make their sweet sound, the poet describes it as if, overcome by love, they were pleading: 'May Sita’s feet never abandon us.'
मंजु बिलोचन मोचति बारी। बोली देखि राम महतारी॥ तात सुनहु सिय अति सुकुमारी। सास ससुर परिजनहि पिआरी॥ ४ ॥

mañju bilocana mocati bārī। bolī dekhi rāma mahatārī॥ tāta sunahu siya ati sukumāri। sāsa sasura parijanahi piārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Sita was shedding tears from her lovely eyes. Seeing her condition, Rama's mother Kaushalya said, 'O dear one, listen: Sita is exceedingly delicate and beloved by her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and all her relatives.'
पिता जनक भूपाल मनि ससुर भानुकुल भानु। पति रबिकुल कैरव बिपिन बिधु गुन रूप निधानु॥ ५८ ॥

pitā janaka bhūpāla mani sasura bhānukula bhānu। pati rabikula kairava bipina bidhu guna rūpa nidhānu॥ 58 ॥
Meaning:
Her father, Janaka, is the jewel among kings; her father-in-law is the sun of the solar race; and her husband is the moon that makes the lily-grove of the solar line bloom, a treasury of virtues and beauty.
मैं पुनि पुत्रबधू प्रिय पाई। रूप रासि गुन सील सुहाई॥ नयन पुतरि करि प्रीति बढ़ाई। राखेउँ प्रान जानकिहिं लाई॥ १ ॥

maiṃ puni putrabadhū priya pāī। rūpa rāsi guna sīla suhāī॥ nayana putari kari prīti baṛhāī। rākhеuṃ prāna jānakihiṃ lāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Then I found a beloved daughter-in-law who is a treasury of beauty, virtue, and modesty. I made her the pupil of my eye, deepened my affection for her, and have placed my life in Janaki.
कलपबेलि जिमि बहुबिधि लाली। सींचि सनेह सलिल प्रतिपाली॥ फूलत फलत भयउ बिधि बामा। जानि न जाइ काह परिनामा॥ २ ॥

kalapabeli jimi bahubidhi lālī। sīṃci saneha salila pratipālī॥ phūlata phalata bhayau bidhi bāmā। jāni na jāi kāha parināmā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Like a wish-fulfilling creeper, I have nurtured her with great care and affection, watering her with the water of love. Now, at the time of flowering and fruiting, fate has turned adverse. No one can tell what the result will be.
पलँग पीठ तजि गोद हिंडोरा। सियँ न दीन्ह पगु अवनि कठोरा॥ जिअनमूरि जिमि जोगवत रहऊँ। दीप बाति नहिं टारन कहऊँ॥ ३ ॥

palaṅga pīṭha taji goda hiṃḍorā। siyaṃ na dīnha pagu avani kaṭhorā॥ jiyanamūri jimi jogavata rahauṃ। dīpa bāti nahiṃ ṭārana kahauṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Sita has never set foot on the hard earth, having left the bed, the lap, and the swing. I have always guarded her carefully, like a life-giving herb. I never even ask that the lamp wick be removed.
सोइ सिय चलन चहति बन साथा। आयसु काह होइ रघुनाथा॥ चंद किरन रस रसिक चकोरी। रबि रुख नयन सकइ किमि जोरी॥ ४ ॥

soi siya calana cahati bana sāthā। āyasu kāha hoi raghunāthā॥ canda kiraṇa rasa rasika cakorī। ravi rukha nayana sakai kimi jorī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
That very Sita now wishes to go to the forest with you. O Raghunath, what command can be given to her? How can the chakori, who delights in the nectar of the moon’s rays, turn her eyes toward the sun?
करि केहरि निसिचर चरहिं दुष्ट जंतु बन भूरि। बिष बाटिकाँ कि सोह सुत सुभग सजीवनि मूरि॥ ५९ ॥

Meaning:
Elephants, lions, demons, and many other evil creatures roam the forest in abundance. O son, can the beautiful life-giving herb shine in a garden of poison?
बन हित कोल किरात किसोरी। रचीं बिरंचि बिषय सुख भोरी॥ पाहनकृमि जिमि कठिन सुभाऊ। तिन्हहि कलेसु न कानन काऊ॥ १ ॥

bana hita kola kirāta kisorī। racīṃ birañci biṣaya sukha bhorī॥ pāhanakṛmi jimi kaṭhina subhāū। tinhahi kalesu na kānana kāū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
For the sake of the forest, Brahma fashioned the Kol and Kirat girls, who know nothing of sensual pleasure, and whose nature is hard like that of a stone-eating insect. They suffer no hardship in the forest.
कै तापस तिय कानन जोगू। जिन्ह तप हेतु तजा सब भोगू॥ सिय बन बसिहि तात केहि भाँती। चित्रलिखित कपि देखि डेराती॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
Or perhaps ascetics’ wives are fit to live in the forest, since they have renounced all pleasures for the sake of penance. O son, how could Sita live in the forest if she is frightened even by seeing a painted monkey?
सुरसर सुभग बनज बन चारी। डाबर जोगु कि हंसकुमारी॥ अस बिचारि जस आयसु होई। मैं सिख देउँ जानकिहि सोई॥ ३ ॥

Meaning:
Is a swan princess, roaming in the fragrant lotus-groves of the celestial lake, fit for a muddy pond? Thinking thus, as you command, I will instruct Janaki accordingly.

Speaking wise and loving words, he satisfied his mother. Then, laying out the merits and faults of the forest, he began to persuade Janaki.
