Lakshmana's Righteous Anger
Hearing King Janaka's despairing words, Lakshmana is stirred to righteous anger. He speaks boldly in the assembly and proclaims the valor of the Raghu lineage.

जनक बचन सुनि सब नर नारी। देखि जानकिहि भए दुखारी॥ माखे लखनु कुटिल भइँ भौंहें। रदपट फरकत नयन रिसौंहें॥ ४ ॥

janaka bacana suni saba nara nārī। dekhi jānakihi bhae dukhārī॥ mākhe lakhanu kuṭila bhaiṃ bhauhẽ। radapaṭa pharakata nayana risauṃhe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing Janaka's words, all the men and women became sorrowful as they looked at Janaki. Lakshmana flared up; his eyebrows twisted, his lips quivered, and his eyes turned red with anger.
कहि न सकत रघुबीर डर लगे बचन जनु बान। नाइ राम पद कमल सिरु बोले गिरा प्रमान॥ २५२ ॥

kahi na sakata raghubīra ḍara lage bacana janu bāna। nāi rāma pada kamala siru bole girā pramāna॥ 252 ॥
Meaning:
Fear of Shri Raghubir left him unable to say anything, yet Janaka's words struck him like arrows. When he could bear it no longer, he bowed his head at Shri Ramachandra's lotus feet and spoke truthful words—
रघुबंसिन्ह महुँ जहँ कोउ होई। तेहिं समाज अस कहइ न कोई॥ कही जनक जसि अनुचित बानी। बिद्यमान रघुकुलमनि जानी॥ १ ॥

raghubaṃsinha mahūṃ jaham̐ kou hoī। tehiṃ samāja asa kahai na koī॥ kahī janaka jasi anucita bānī। bidyamāna raghukulamani jānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Wherever there is even one among the Raghu line, no one in such an assembly would speak words like these. Knowing Shri Ram, the jewel of the Raghu clan, to be present, Janaka still spoke such improper words.
सुनहु भानुकुल पंकज भानू। कहउँ सुभाउ न कछु अभिमानू॥ जौं तुम्हारि अनुसासन पावौं। कंदुक इव ब्रह्मांड उठावौं॥ २ ॥

sunahu bhānukula paṃkaja bhānū। kahauṃ subhāu na kachu abhimānū॥ jauṃ tumhāri anusāsana pāvāuṃ। kaṃduka iva brahmāṃḍa uṭhāvauṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
O sun of the lotus-like Sun dynasty, listen: I speak this from my nature, not out of pride. If I receive your command, I can lift the universe as if it were a ball.
काचे घट जिमि डारौं फोरी। सकउँ मेरु मूलक जिमि तोरी॥ तव प्रताप महिमा भगवाना। को बापुरो पिनाक पुराना॥ ३ ॥

kāce ghaṭa jimi ḍārauṃ phorī। sakauṃ meru mūlaka jimi torī॥ tava pratāpa mahimā bhagavānā। ko bāpuro pināka purānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
And I could break it like an earthen pot. I can split Mount Meru like a radish; O Lord, in the glory of your power, what is this poor old Pinaka bow?
नाथ जानि अस आयसु होऊ। कौतुकु करौं बिलोकिअ सोऊ॥ कमल नाल जिमि चाप चढ़ावौं। जोजन सत प्रमान लै धावौं॥ ४ ॥

nātha jāni asa āyasu hoū। kautuku karauṃ bilokia sou॥ kamala nāla jimi cāpa caṛhāvauṃ। jojana sata pramāna lai dhāvauṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Knowing this, O Lord, if you command it, let me perform a little feat; please watch it. I would string the bow like a lotus stem and race it a hundred yojanas.
तोरौं छत्रक दंड जिमि तव प्रताप बल नाथ। जौं न करौं प्रभु पद सपथ कर न धरौं धनु भाथ॥ २५३ ॥

torauṃ chatraka daṃḍa jimi tava pratāpa bala nātha। jauṃ na karauṃ prabhu pada sapatha kara na dharauṃ dhanu bhātha॥ 253 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, by the strength of your splendor I would break the bow like the stalk of a mushroom. If I do not do so, then I swear by the Lord's feet that I will never again so much as touch bow or quiver.
लखन सकोप बचन जे बोले। डगमगानि महि दिग्गज डोले॥ सकल लोग सब भूप डेराने। सिय हियँ हरषु जनकु सकुचाने॥ १ ॥

lakhana sakopa bacana je bole। ḍagamagāni mahi diggaja dole॥ sakala loga saba bhūpa ḍerāne। siya hiyaṃ haraṣu janaku sakucāne॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as Lakshmana spoke those angry words, the earth trembled and the elephants of the directions quaked. All the people and all the kings were frightened. Joy arose in Sita's heart, and Janaka was humbled.
गुर रघुपति सब मुनि मन माहीं। मुदित भए पुनि पुनि पुलकाहीं॥ सयनहिं रघुपति लखनु नेवारे। प्रेम समेत निकट बैठारे॥ २ ॥

gura raghupati saba muni mana māhīṃ। mudita bhae puni puni pulakāhīṃ॥ sayanahiṃ raghupati lakhanu nevāre। prema sameta nikaṭa baiṭhāre॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Guru Vishvamitra, Shri Raghunath, and all the sages became joyful in their hearts and again and again thrilled with delight. Shri Raghupati signaled Lakshmana to stop and seated him near Him with affection.
बिस्वामित्र समय सुभ जानी। बोले अति सनेहमय बानी॥ उठहु राम भंजहु भवचापा। मेटहु तात जनक परितापा॥ ३ ॥

bisvāmitra samaya subha jānī। bole ati sanehamaya bānī॥ uṭhahu rāma bhaṃjahu bhavacāpā। meṭahu tāta janaka paritāpā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Recognizing the auspicious moment, Vishvamitra spoke with great affection: 'Arise, Rama! Break Shiva's bow, and, dear child, remove Janaka's agony.'
सुनि गुरु बचन चरन सिरु नावा। हरषु बिषादु न कछु उर आवा॥ ठाढ़े भए उठि सहज सुभाएँ। ठवनि जुबा मृगराजु लजाएँ॥ ४ ॥

suni guru bacana carana siru nāvā। haraṣu biṣādu na kachu ura āvā॥ ṭhāṛhe bhae uṭhi sahaja subhāẽ। ṭhavani jubā mṛgarāju lajāẽ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the guru's words, Shri Ram bowed His head to his feet. Neither joy nor sorrow entered His heart, and He rose naturally, with such bearing that even a young lion would feel ashamed.
उदित उदयगिरि मंच पर रघुबर बालपतंग। बिकसे संत सरोज सब हरषे लोचन भृंग॥ २५४ ॥

udita udayagiri maṃca para raghubara bālapataṃga। bikase santa saroja saba haraṣe locana bhṛṃga॥ 254 ॥
Meaning:
As the young sun-like Raghubar rose upon the stage of Mount Udaya, all the saintly lotuses blossomed and the bee-like eyes rejoiced.
नृपन्ह केरि आसा निसि नासी। बचन नखत अवली न प्रकासी॥ मानी महिप कुमुद सकुचाने। कपटी भूप उलूक लुकाने॥ १ ॥

nṛpanha keri āsā nisi nāsī। bacana nakhata avalī na prakāsī॥ mānī mahipa kumuda sakucāne। kapṭī bhūpa ulūka lukāne॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The kings’ hope, like the night, was destroyed; the stars of their words no longer shone. The proud rulers, like lotuses, shrank back, and the deceitful kings hid like owls.
भए बिसोक कोक मुनि देवा। बरिसहिं सुमन जनावहिं सेवा॥ गुर पद बंदि सहित अनुरागा। राम मुनिन्ह सन आयसु मागा॥ २ ॥

bhae bisoka koka muni deva। barisahiṃ sumana janāvahim sevā॥ gur pada bandi sahita anurāgā। rāma muninhaṃ sana āyasu māgā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The sages and gods, like chakravakas, became free from sorrow. They showered flowers, showing their service. Bowing with love at the guru’s feet, Rama asked permission from the sages.
सहजहिं चले सकल जग स्वामी। मत्त मंजु बर कुंजर गामी॥ चलत राम सब पुर नर नारी। पुलक पूरि तन भए सुखारी॥ ३ ॥

sahajahiṃ chale sakala jaga svāmī। matta mañju bara kuṃjara gāmī॥ calata rāma saba pura nara nārī। pulaka pūri tana bhae sukhārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord of all the world walked naturally, with the graceful gait of a splendid intoxicated elephant. As Rama walked, all the men and women of the city became happy, and their bodies were filled with goosebumps of joy.
बंदि पितर सुर सुकृत सँभारे। जौं कछु पुन्य प्रभाउ हमारे॥ तौ सिवधनु मृनाल की नाईं। तोरहुँ रामु गनेस गोसाईं॥ ४ ॥

bandi pitara sura sukṛta saṃbhāre। jauṃ kachu punya prabhāu hamāre॥ tau sivadhanu mṛnāla kī nāīṃ। torahuṃ rāmu ganesa gosāīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Having saluted their ancestors and the gods, they remembered their merits. If some power of our good deeds exists, then, O Ganesha Gosain, may Rama break Shiva’s bow like a lotus stalk.
रामहि प्रेम समेत लखि सखिन्ह समीप बोलाइ। सीता मातु सनेह बस बचन कहइ बिलखाइ॥ २५५ ॥

rāmahi prem sameta lakhi sakhinhaṃ samīpa bolāi। sītā mātu saneha basa bacana kahai bilakhāi॥ 255 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Rama with affectionate love, and calling her companions near, Sita’s mother, overcome with affection, spoke these words in grief—
सखि सब कौतुकु देखनिहारे। जेउ कहावत हितू हमारे॥ कोउ न बुझाइ कहइ गुर पाहीं। ए बालक असि हठ भलि नाहीं॥ १ ॥

sakhi saba kautuku dekhanihāre। jeu kahāvata hitū hamāre॥ kou na bujhāi kahai guru pāhīṃ। e bālaka asi haṭha bhali nāhīṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O sister, even those who call themselves our well-wishers are all mere spectators. Why does no one go and explain to Guru Vishvamitra that this is only a child, and such obstinacy is not proper? [The queen found it unreasonable that the sage should ask Rama to break a bow that could not be moved even by world-conquering heroes like Ravana and Banasura.]
रावन बान छुआ नहिं चापा। हारे सकल भूप करि दापा॥ सो धनु राजकुअँर कर देहीं। बाल मराल कि मंदर लेहीं॥ २ ॥

rāvana bāna chuā nahim cāpā। hāre sakala bhūpa kari dāpā॥ so dhanu rājakuaṃra kara dehīṃ। bāla marāla ki mandara lehīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana and Banasura did not even touch this bow, and all the kings were defeated in their pride. Yet they are placing that bow in the hand of this tender prince. Can a baby swan lift Mount Mandara?
भूप सयानप सकल सिरानी। सखि बिधि गति कछु जाति न जानी॥ बोली चतुर सखी मृदु बानी। तेजवंत लघु गनिअ न रानी॥ ३ ॥

bhūpa sayānap sakala sirānī। sakhi bidhi gati kachu jāti na jānī॥ bolī catura sakhī mṛdu bānī। tejavaṃta laghu ganiya na rānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The king’s wisdom has all been exhausted, O sister; the ways of destiny cannot be understood. Then a clever companion spoke softly: ‘O queen, the strong should not be considered small.’
कहँ कुंभज कहँ सिंधु अपारा। सोषेउ सुजसु सकल संसारा॥ रबि मंडल देखत लघु लागा। उदयँ तासु तिभुवन तम भागा॥ ४ ॥

kaham kuṃbhaja kaham sindhu apārā। soṣeu sujasu sakala saṃsārā॥ rabi maṃḍala dekhat laghu lāgā। udayaṃ tāsu tibhuvana tama bhāgā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Where is the pot-born sage Agastya, and where is the boundless ocean? Yet he dried it up, and his splendid fame is spread throughout the world. The sun’s disc seems small to behold, but when it rises, the darkness of the three worlds flees.
मंत्र परम लघु जासु बस बिधि हरि हर सुर सर्ब। महामत्त गजराज कहुँ बस कर अंकुस खर्ब॥ २५६ ॥

maṃtra parama laghu jāsu basa bidhi hari hari sura sarba। mahāmatta gajarāja kahum basa kara aṃkusa kharba॥ 256 ॥
Meaning:
A mantra may be extremely small, yet by its power Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all the gods are brought under control. A tiny goad can bring a mighty, intoxicated elephant under control.
काम कुसुम धनु सायक लीन्हे। सकल भुवन अपने बस कीन्हे॥ देबि तजिअ संसउ अस जानी। भंजब धनुषु राम सुनु रानी॥ १ ॥

kāma kusuma dhanu sāyaka līhne। sakala bhuvana apane basa kīhne॥ debi tajia saṃsau asa jānī। bhaṃjaba dhanuṣu rāma sunu rānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Cupid took a bow and arrows made of flowers, and brought all the worlds under his sway. O goddess, knowing this, give up your doubt. Listen, O queen, Rama will surely break the bow.
सखी बचन सुनि भै परतीती। मिटा बिषादु बढ़ी अति प्रीती॥ तब रामहि बिलोकि बैदेही। सभय हृदयँ बिनवति जेहि तेही॥ २ ॥

sakhī bacana suni bhai paratītī। miṭā biṣādu baṛhī ati prītī॥ taba rāmahi biloki baidehī। sabhaya hṛdayaṃ binavati jehi tehī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing her companion’s words, she became convinced. Her sorrow vanished, and her love for Rama greatly increased. Then, beholding Rama, Videha’s daughter prayed with a fearful heart to one deity after another.
मनहीं मन मनाव अकुलानी। होहु प्रसन्न महेस भवानी॥ करहु सफल आपनि सेवकाई। करि हितु हरहु चाप गरुआई॥ ३ ॥

manahīṃ mana manāva akulānī। hohu prasanna mahesa bhavānī॥ karahu saphala āpani sevakāī। kari hitu harahu cāpa garuāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
In her agitation she was pleading inwardly: ‘O Mahesh and Bhavani, be pleased. Make my service fruitful, and out of kindness remove the bow’s heaviness.’
गननायक बरदायक देवा। आजु लगें कीन्हिउँ तुअ सेवा॥ बार बार बिनती सुनि मोरी। करहु चाप गुरुता अति थोरी॥ ४ ॥

gananāyaka baradāyaka devā। āju lageṃ kīnhiũ tua sevā॥ bāra bāra binatī suni morī। karahu cāpa gurutā ati thorī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Ganesha, lord of the ganas and giver of boons! I have served you for this very day. Listen again and again to my plea, and make the bow’s weight very slight.
देखि देखि रघुबीर तन सुर मनाव धरि धीर। भरे बिलोचन प्रेम जल पुलकावली सरीर॥ २५७ ॥

dekhi dekhi raghubīra tana sura manāva dhari dhīra। bhare bilocana prema jala pulakāvalī sarīra॥ 257 ॥
Meaning:
Looking again and again at Rama’s form, the gods, restraining themselves, were praying. Their eyes were filled with tears of love, and their bodies were covered with goosebumps.
नीकें निरखि नयन भरि सोभा। पितु पनु सुमिरि बहुरि मनु छोभा॥ अहह तात दारुनि हठ ठानी। समुझत नहिं कछु लाभु न हानी॥ १ ॥

nīkeṃ nirakhi nayana bhari sobhā। pitu panu sumiri bahuri manu chobhā॥ ahaha tāta dāruni haṭha ṭhānī। samujhata nahim kachu lābhu na hānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Looking carefully, with eyes full, at Rama’s beauty, and then remembering her father’s vow, Sita’s mind was again disturbed. ‘Ah, father has taken a terrible resolve, and he considers neither gain nor loss.’
सचिव सभय सिख देइ न कोई। बुध समाज बड़ अनुचित होई॥ कहँ धनु कुलिसहु चाहि कठोरा। कहँ स्यामल मृदुगात किसोरा॥ २ ॥

saciva sabhaya sikha dei na koī। budha samāja baṛa anucita hoī॥ kaham dhanu kulisahu cāhi kathorā। kaham syāmala mṛdugāta kisorā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The ministers are afraid, so no one dares give advice; in a learned assembly this is most improper. Where is a bow harder even than lightning, and where is this dark-complexioned, soft-bodied youth?
बिधि केहि भाँति धरौं उर धीरा। सिरस सुमन कन बेधिअ हीरा॥ सकल सभा कै मति भै भोरी। अब मोहि संभुचाप गति तोरी॥ ३ ॥

bidhi kehi bhāṃti dharauṃ ura dhīrā। sirasa sumana kana bedhia hīrā॥ sakala sabhā kai mati bhai bhorī। aba mohi saṃbhucāpa gati torī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Creator, how can I keep courage in my heart? Can a diamond be pierced with a particle of a siris flower? The mind of the whole assembly has gone astray; now, O bow of Shiva, you alone are my refuge.
निज जड़ता लोगन्ह पर डारी। होहि हरुअ रघुपतिहि निहारी॥ अति परिताप सीय मन माहीं। लव निमेष जुग सय सम जाहीं॥ ४ ॥

nija jaṛatā loganha para ḍārī। hohi harua raghupatahi nihārī॥ ati paritāpa sīya mana māhīṃ। lava nimeṣa juga saya sama jāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Cast your heaviness upon the people and become light at the sight of Rama. In Sita’s mind there is great anguish; even a single moment passes like a hundred ages.
प्रभुहि चितइ पुनि चितव महि राजत लोचन लोल। खेलत मनसिज मीन जुग जनु बिधु मंडल डोल॥ २५८ ॥

prabhuhi citai puni citava mahi rājata locana lola। khelata manasija mīna juga janu bidhu maṃḍala ḍola॥ 258 ॥
Meaning:
Looking at the Lord and then down at the ground, Sita’s restless eyes shone beautifully, as if two fish of Cupid were playing in a moon-disc-like swing.
गिरा अलिनि मुख पंकज रोकी। प्रगट न लाज निसा अवलोकी॥ लोचन जलु रह लोचन कोना। जैसें परम कृपन कर सोना॥ १ ॥

girā alini mukha paṃkaja rokī। pragaṭa na lāja nisā avalokī॥ locana jalu raha locana konā। jaisẽ parama kṛpana kara sonā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The bee-like speech was restrained by the lotus of her face. Seeing the night of shame, it did not emerge. The water of her eyes remains at the corners of her eyes, just as a miser keeps his gold hidden in a corner.
सकुची ब्याकुलता बड़ि जानी। धरि धीरजु प्रतीति उर आनी॥ तन मन बचन मोर पनु साचा। रघुपति पद सरोज चितु राचा॥ २ ॥

sakucī byākulatā baṛi jānī। dhari dhīraju pratīti ura ānī॥ tana mana bacana mora panu sācā। raghupati pada saroja citu rācā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Recognizing her own great agitation, Sita grew shy and, gathering courage, brought conviction into her heart: if my vow of body, mind, and speech is true, and my mind is truly fixed on the lotus feet of Rama,
तौ भगवानु सकल उर बासी। करिहि मोहि रघुबर कै दासी॥ जेहि कें जेहि पर सत्य सनेहू। सो तेहि मिलइ न कछु संदेहू॥ ३ ॥

tau bhagavānu sakala ura bāsī। karihi mohi raghubara kai dāsī॥ jehi keṃ jehi para satya sanehū। so tehi milai na kachu saṃdehū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then the Lord who dwells in everyone’s heart will surely make me the handmaid of Rama, the best of the Raghu line. Whoever truly loves another will certainly meet that one; there is no doubt about it.
प्रभु तन चितइ प्रेम तन ठाना। कृपानिधान राम सबु जाना॥ सियहि बिलोकि तकेउ धनु कैसें। चितव गरुरु लघु ब्यालहि जैसें॥ ४ ॥

prabhu tana citai prema tana ṭhānā। kṛpānidhāna rāma sabu jānā॥ siyahi biloki takeu dhanu kaisẽ। citava garuru laghu byāla hi jaisẽ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Looking at the Lord, she resolved in love with her body; that is, she firmly decided that this body would belong to Him or would not remain at all. The treasure of compassion, Rama, understood everything. Seeing Sita, He glanced at the bow as Garuda looks at a small snake.
लखन लखेउ रघुबंसमनि ताकेउ हर कोदंडु। पुलकि गात बोले बचन चरन चापि ब्रह्मांडु॥ २५९ ॥

lakhana lakheu raghubaṃsamani tākeu hara kodaṃḍu। pulaki gāta bole bacana carana cāpi brahmāṃḍu॥ 259 ॥
Meaning:
When Lakshmana saw that the jewel of the Raghu line, Rama, had looked at Shiva’s bow, his body thrilled with joy, and, pressing the universe beneath his feet, he spoke these words:
दिसिकुंजरहु कमठ अहि कोला। धरहु धरनि धरि धीर न डोला॥ रामु चहहिं संकर धनु तोरा। होहु सजग सुनि आयसु मोरा॥ १ ॥

disikuṃjarahu kamaṭha ahi kolā। dharahu dharani dhari dhīra na ḍolā॥ rāmu cahahiṃ saṃkara dhanu torā। hohu sajaga suni āyasu morā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O elephants of the directions, tortoise, serpent, and boar—hold up the earth with steadfast patience so it does not tremble. Rama wishes to break Shiva's bow. Hearing my command, be alert.
चाप समीप रामु जब आए। नर नारिन्ह सुर सुकृत मनाए॥ सब कर संसउ अरु अग्यानू। मंद महीपन्ह कर अभिमानू॥ २ ॥

cāpa samīpa rāmu jaba āe। nara nāriṇha sura sukṛta manāe॥ saba kara saṃsau aru agyānū। manda mahīpanha kara abhimānū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When Rama came near the bow, men and women rejoiced, and even the gods and all meritorious beings were delighted. All doubt and ignorance, and the pride of the petty kings, were overcome.
भृगुपति केरि गरब गरुआई। सुर मुनिबरन्ह केरि कदराई॥ सिय कर सोचु जनक पछितावा। रानिन्ह कर दारुन दुख दावा॥ ३ ॥

bhṛgupati keri garaba garuāī। sura munibaranha keri kadarāī॥ siya kara socu janaka pachitāvā। rāninha kara dāruna dukha dāvā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The weight of Parashurama's pride, the fear of the gods and great sages, Sita's anxiety, Janaka's remorse, and the blaze of the queens' terrible sorrow.
संभुचाप बड़ बोहितु पाई। चढ़े जाइ सब संगु बनाई॥ राम बाहुबल सिंधु अपारू। चहत पारु नहिं कोउ कड़हारू॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
saṃbhucāpa baḍa bohitu pāī। caḍhe jāi saba saṃgu banāī॥ rāma bāhubala sindhu apārū। cahata pāru nahiṃ kou kaḍhārū॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
They obtained the great ship in the form of Shiva's bow and boarded it together. They wish to cross the boundless ocean that is Rama's arm-strength, but there is no ferryman.
राम बिलोके लोग सब चित्र लिखे से देखि। चितई सीय कृपायतन जानी बिकल बिसेषि॥ २६० ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
rāma biloke loga saba citra likhe se dekhi। citai sītā kṛpāyatana jānī bikala biśeṣi॥ 260 ॥
Meaning:
Rama looked at all the people and saw them as though painted in a picture; then the abode of compassion looked at Sita and knew her to be especially distressed.
