सतीं मरत हरि सन बरु मागा। जनम जनम सिव पद अनुरागा॥ तेहि कारन हिमगिरि गृह जाई। जनमीं पारबती तनु पाई॥ ३ ॥

satīṃ marata hari sana baru māgā। janama janama siva pada anurāgā॥ tehi kārana himagiri gṛha jāī। janamīṃ pārabatī tanu pāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
As she died, Sati asked Lord Hari for this boon: that in every birth she might remain devoted to Shiva’s feet. For this reason she went to the house of Himachal and was born in the body of Parvati.
जब तें उमा सैल गृह जाईं। सकल सिद्धि संपति तहँ छाईं॥ जहँ तहँ मुनिन्ह सुआश्रम कीन्हे। उचित बास हिम भूधर दीन्हे॥ ४ ॥

jaba teṃ umā saila gṛha jāīṃ। sakala siddhi saṃpati tahaṃ chāīṃ॥ jahāṃ tahaṃ muninha suāśrama kīnhe। ucita bāsa hima bhūdhara dīnhe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Since Uma was born in Himachal’s house, all attainments and prosperity have spread there. The sages built lovely hermitages here and there, and the mountain lord gave them suitable places to dwell.
सदा सुमन फल सहित सब द्रुम नव नाना जाति। प्रगटीं सुंदर सैल पर मनि आकर बहु भाँति॥ ६५ ॥

sadā sumana phala sahita saba druma nava nānā jāti। pragaṭīṃ sundara saila para mani ākara bahu bhāṃti॥ 65 ॥
Meaning:
On that beautiful mountain, all kinds of fresh new trees continually bore flowers and fruit, and mines of jewels appeared there in many forms.
सरिता सब पुनीत जलु बहहीं। खग मृग मधुप सुखी सब रहहीं॥ सहज बयरु सब जीवन्ह त्यागा। गिरि पर सकल करहिं अनुरागा॥ १ ॥

saritā saba punīta jalu bahahīṃ। khaga mṛga madhupa sukhī saba rahahīṃ॥ sahaja bayaru saba jīvanhaṃ tyāgā। giri para sakala karahiṃ anurāgā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Pure waters flow in all the rivers, and birds, deer, and bees all live happily. All living beings have abandoned their natural hostility, and on the mountain all show mutual affection.
सोह सैल गिरिजा गृह आएँ। जिमि जनु रामभगति के पाएँ॥ नित नूतन मंगल गृह तासू। ब्रह्मादिक गावहिं जसु जासू॥ २ ॥

soha saila girijā gṛha āeṃ। jimi janu rāma-bhakti ke pāeṃ॥ nita nūtana maṅgala gṛha tāsū। brahmādika gāvahiṃ jasa jāsū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
With Girija’s arrival in the mountain’s home, the mountain shines as a devotee shines upon attaining devotion to Rama. In that house there are ever-new auspicious celebrations, and Brahma and the other gods sing its glory.
नारद समाचार सब पाए। कौतुकहीं गिरि गेह सिधाए॥ सैलराज बड़ आदर कीन्हा। पद पखारि बर आसनु दीन्हा॥ ३ ॥

nārada samācāra saba pāe। kautukahīṃ giri geha sidhāe॥ sailarāja baḍa ādara kīnha। pada pakhāri bara āsanu dīnha॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
When Narad heard all this news, he went to Himachal’s home out of curiosity. The king of mountains honored him greatly, washed his feet, and offered him a fine seat.
नारि सहित मुनि पद सिरु नावा। चरन सलिल सबु भवनु सिंचावा॥ निज सौभाग्य बहुत गिरि बरना। सुता बोलि मेली मुनि चरना॥ ४ ॥

nāri sahita muni pada siru nāvā। carana salila sabu bhavanu siṃcāvā॥ nija saubhāgya bahuta giri baranā। sutā boli melī muni caranā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then, together with his wife, he bowed his head at the sage’s feet and sprinkled the foot-wash throughout the house. Himachal praised his great good fortune and called his daughter, placing her at the sage’s feet.
त्रिकालग्य सर्बग्य तुम्ह गति सर्बत्र तुम्हारि॥ कहहु सुता के दोष गुन मुनिबर हृदयँ बिचारि॥ ६६ ॥

trikālagya sarbagya tumha gati sarvatra tumhāri॥ kahahu sutā ke doṣa guna munibara hṛdayaṃ bicāri॥ 66 ॥
Meaning:
And he said: “O great sage, you are knower of the three times and all-knowing; your reach is everywhere. So, considering in your heart, speak of the girl’s faults and virtues.”
कह मुनि बिहसि गूढ़ मृदु बानी। सुता तुम्हारि सकल गुन खानी॥ सुंदर सहज सुसील सयानी। नाम उमा अंबिका भवानी॥ १ ॥

kaha muni bihasi gūḍha mṛdu bānī। sutā tumhāri sakala guna khānī॥ sundara sahaja susīla sayānī। nāma umā aṃbikā bhavānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The sage Narad smiled and said in a gentle, secretive tone: “Your daughter is a mine of all virtues. She is naturally beautiful, well-mannered, and wise. Her names are Uma, Ambika, and Bhavani.”
सब लच्छन संपन्न कुमारी। होइहि संतत पियहि पिआरी॥ सदा अचल एहि कर अहिवाता। एहि तें जसु पैहहिं पितु माता॥ २ ॥

saba lacchana saṃpanna kumārī। hoihi pūjya sakala jaga māhīṃ॥ sadā acala ehi kara ahivātā। ehi teṃ jasu paihahiṃ pitu mātā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The maiden is endowed with all auspicious marks and will always be dear to her husband. Her married life will remain unshaken, and through her her parents will gain fame.
होइहि पूज्य सकल जग माहीं। एहि सेवत कछु दुर्लभ नाहीं॥ एहि कर नामु सुमिरि संसारा। त्रिय चढ़िहहिं पतिब्रत असिधारा॥ ३ ॥

hoihi pūjya sakala jaga māhīṃ। ehi sevata kachu durlabha nāhīṃ॥ ehi kara nāmu sumiri saṃsārā। triya caṛhihahiṃ patibrata asidhārā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
She will be worshipped throughout the world, and serving her will make nothing unattainable. In this world, women will remember her name and tread the sharp edge of the sword of chastity.
सैल सुलच्छन सुता तुम्हारी। सुनहु जे अब अवगुन दुइ चारी॥ अगुन अमान मातु पितु हीना। उदासीन सब संसय छीना॥ ४ ॥

saila sulacchana sutā tumhārī। sunahu je aba avaguna dui cārī॥ aguna amāna mātu pitu hīnā। udāsīna saba saṃsaya chīnā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O lord of the mountain, your daughter is full of auspicious marks. Now hear also the two or four faults in her: without qualities, without honor, without mother and father, detached, and cut off from all doubts.
जोगी जटिल अकाम मन नगन अमंगल बेष। अस स्वामी एहि कहँ मिलिहि परी हस्त असि रेख॥ ६७ ॥

yogī jaṭila akāma mana nagana amaṅgala beṣa। asa svāmī ehi kahaṃ milihi parī hasta asi rekha॥ 67 ॥
Meaning:
A yogi, matted-haired, desireless in mind, naked, and wearing inauspicious garb—such a husband will be hers. Such is the line marked on her hand.
सुनि मुनि गिरा सत्य जियँ जानी। दुख दंपतिहि उमा हरषानी॥ नारदहूँ यह भेदु न जाना। दसा एक समुझब बिलगाना॥ १ ॥

suni muni girā satya jiyaṃ jānī। dukha daṃpatihi umā haraṣānī॥ nāradahūṃ yaha bhedu na jānā। dasā eka samujhaba bilagānā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the sage Narada’s words and knowing them to be true in her heart, the couple was filled with sorrow, and Uma rejoiced. Narada himself did not understand this hidden mystery, for though the outward condition was the same, the inward understanding was different.
सकल सखीं गिरिजा गिरि मैना। पुलक सरीर भरे जल नैना॥ होइ न मृषा देवरिषि भाषा। उमा सो बचनु हृदयँ धरि राखा॥ २ ॥

sakala sakhīṃ girijā giri mainā। pulaka sarīra bhare jala nainā॥ hoi na mṛṣā devariṣi bhāṣā। umā so bacanu hṛdayaṃ dhari rākhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
All the companions, Girija, Giriraj Himalaya, and Maina had bodies thrilled with emotion, and their eyes were filled with tears. Knowing that the words of the divine sage could not be false, Uma held those words in her heart.
उपजेउ सिव पद कमल सनेहू। मिलन कठिन मन भा संदेहू॥ जानि कुअवसरु प्रीति दुराई। सखी उछँग बैठी पुनि जाई॥ ३ ॥

upajeu siva pada kamala sanehū। milana kaṭhina mana bhā sandehū॥ jāni kuavasaru prīti durāī। sakhī uchaṅga baiṭhī puni jāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Love arose in her heart for Shiva’s lotus feet, but then she doubted that meeting Him would be difficult. Seeing the moment as unfavorable, Uma hid her love and once again sat in a friend’s lap.
झूठि न होइ देवरिषि बानी। सोचहिं दंपति सखीं सयानी॥ उर धरि धीर कहइ गिरिराऊ। कहहु नाथ का करिअ उपाऊ॥ ४ ॥

jhūṭhi na hoi devariṣi bānī। socahīṃ daṃpati sakhīṃ sayānī॥ ura dhari dhīra kahai girirāū। kahahu nātha kā kariya upāū॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Thinking, 'The divine sage’s words cannot be false,' Himalaya, Maina, and all the wise companions became worried. Then, gathering courage in his heart, the Lord of the mountains said, 'Tell me, my Lord, what should be done now?'
कह मुनीस हिमवंत सुनु जो बिधि लिखा लिलार। देव दनुज नर नाग मुनि कोउ न मेटनिहार॥ ६८ ॥

kaha munīsa himavaṃta sunu jo bidhi likhā lilāra। deva danuja nara nāga muni kou na meṭanihāra॥ 68 ॥
Meaning:
The sage said, 'Listen, O Himalaya. Whatever the Creator has written on the forehead, no god, demon, man, serpent, or sage can erase.'
तदपि एक मैं कहउँ उपाई। होइ करै जौं दैउ सहाई॥ जस बरु मैं बरनेउँ तुम्ह पाहीं। मिलिहि उमहि तस संसय नाहीं॥ १ ॥

tadapi eka maiṃ kahauṃ upāī। hoi karai jauṃ daiu sahāī॥ jasa baru maiṃ baraneuṃ tumha pāhīṃ। milihi umahi tasa saṃsaya nāhīṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Still, I can suggest one remedy, if divine help is granted. Uma will surely get just such a groom as I have described before you.
जे जे बर के दोष बखाने। ते सब सिव पहिं मैं अनुमाने॥ जौं बिबाहु संकर सन होई। दोषउ गुन सम कह सबु कोई॥ २ ॥

je je bara ke doṣa bakhāne। te saba siva pahiṃ maiṃ anumāne॥ jauṃ bibāhu saṃkara sana hoi। doṣau guna sama kaha sabu koī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The faults I have pointed out in the groom, in my judgment, all belong to Shiva. If the marriage is with Shankara, then even faults will be spoken of as virtues by everyone.
जौं अहि सेज सयन हरि करहीं। बुध कछु तिन्ह कर दोषु न धरहीं॥ भानु कृसानु सर्ब रस खाहीं। तिन्ह कहँ मंद कहत कोउ नाहीं॥ ३ ॥

jauṃ ahi seja sayana hari karahīṃ। budha kachu tinha kara doṣu na dharahīṃ॥ bhānu kṛsānu sarba rasa khāhīṃ। tinha kahaṃ manda kahata kou nāhīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Just as Lord Vishnu lies upon Shesha’s serpent couch, learned people do not attribute any fault to Him. The sun and fire consume all kinds of tastes, good and bad, yet no one calls them evil.
सुभ अरु असुभ सलिल सब बहई। सुरसरि कोउ अपुनीत न कहई॥ समरथ कहुँ नहिं दोषु गोसाईं। रबि पावक सुरसरि की नाईं॥ ४ ॥

subha aru asubha salila saba bahaī। surasari kou apunīta na kahaī॥ samartha kahuṃ nahiṃ doṣu gosāīṃ। rabi pāvaka surasari kī nāīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
In the Ganga, pure and impure waters both flow together, yet no one calls it defiled. For the capable, there is no fault, O Lord, just as with the sun, fire, and the Ganga.
जौं अस हिसिषा करहिं नर जड़ बिबेक अभिमान। परहिं कलप भरि नरक महुँ जीव कि ईस समान॥ ६९ ॥

jauṃ asa hisiṣā karahiṃ nara jaḍa bibeka abhimāna। parahiṃ kalapa bhari naraka mahuṃ jīva ki īsa samāna॥ 69 ॥
Meaning:
If foolish men, out of pride in their discernment, contend in this way, they fall into hell for an entire age. Can a living being ever be equal to God?
सुरसरि जल कृत बारुनि जाना। कबहुँ न संत करहिं तेहि पाना॥ सुरसरि मिलें सो पावन जैसें। ईस अनीसहि अंतरु तैसें॥ १ ॥

surasari jala kṛta bārunī jānā। kabahuṃ na santa karahiṃ tehi pānā॥ surasari mileṃ so pāvana jaiseṃ। īsa anīsahi aṃtaru taiseṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Knowing wine made from the Ganga’s water to be wine, saints never drink it. But once it is mixed with the Ganga, it becomes pure; the difference between God and the individual soul is like that.
संभु सहज समरथ भगवाना। एहि बिबाहँ सब बिधि कल्याना॥ दुराराध्य पै अहहिं महेसू। आसुतोष पुनि किएँ कलेसू॥ २ ॥

saṃbhu sahaja samaratha bhagavānā। ehi bibāhaṃ saba bidhi kalyānā॥ durārādhya pai ahahiṃ mahesū। āsutoṣa puni kieṃ kalesū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Shiva is naturally all-powerful, for He is the Lord Himself. Therefore this marriage is auspicious in every way. Mahesh is hard to worship, yet by hardship and austerity He becomes pleased very quickly.
जौं तपु करै कुमारि तुम्हारी। भाविउ मेटि सकहिं त्रिपुरारी॥ जद्यपि बर अनेक जग माहीं। एहि कहँ सिव तजि दूसर नाहीं॥ ३ ॥

jauṃ tapu karai kumāri tumhārī। bhāviu meṭi sakahiṃ tripurārī॥ jadyapi bara aneka jaga māhīṃ। ehi kahaṃ siva taji dūsara nāhīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
If your daughter performs austerity, Tripurari can even alter destiny. Although there are many grooms in the world, for this purpose there is no one other than Shiva.
बर दायक प्रनतारति भंजन। कृपासिंधु सेवक मन रंजन॥ इच्छित फल बिनु सिव अवराधें। लहिअ न कोटि जोग जप साधें॥ ४ ॥

bara dāyaka pranatārati bhaṃjana। kṛpāsindhu sevaka mana raṃjana॥ icchita phala binu siva avarādheṃ। lahia na koṭi joga japa sādheṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Shiva is the giver of boons, the destroyer of the sufferings of those who take refuge in Him, an ocean of mercy, and the delight of His servants' hearts. Without worshiping Shiva, even by practicing millions of yogic disciplines and repetitions, one does not obtain the desired fruit.
अस कहि नारद सुमिरि हरि गिरिजहि दीन्हि असीस। होइहि यह कल्यान अब संसय तजहु गिरीस॥ ७० ॥

asa kahi nārada sumiri hari girijahi dīnhī asīsa। hoihi yaha kalyāna aba saṃsaya tajahu girīsa॥ 70 ॥
Meaning:
Saying this, Narada remembered Hari and gave Girija his blessing: 'This will now certainly bring auspiciousness. Therefore, O Girisha, give up your doubt.'
कहि अस ब्रह्मभवन मुनि गयऊ। आगिल चरित सुनहु जस भयऊ॥ पतिहि एकांत पाइ कह मैना। नाथ न मैं समुझे मुनि बैना॥ १ ॥

kahi asa brahmabhavana muni gayū। āgila carita sunahu jasa bhayū॥ patihi ekāṃta pāi kaha mainā। nātha na maiṃ samujhe muni bainā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Having said this, Narada Muni went to Brahmaloka. Now listen to what happened next. Having found her husband alone, Maina said, 'Lord, I did not understand the sage’s words.'
जौं घरु बरु कुलु होइ अनूपा। करिअ बिबाहु सुता अनुरूपा॥ न त कन्या बरु रहउ कुआरी। कंत उमा मम प्रानपिआरी॥ २ ॥

jauṃ ghara baru kula hoi anūpā। kariya bibāhu sutā anurūpā॥ na ta kanyā baru rahau kuārī। kaṃta umā mama prānapiārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
If the house, groom, and family line are excellent and suitable for our daughter, then arrange her marriage. Otherwise let the girl remain unmarried; I do not wish to marry her to an unworthy groom. O lord, Uma is dear to me as life itself.
जौं न मिलिहि बरु गिरिजहि जोगू। गिरि जड़ सहज कहिहि सबु लोगू॥ सोइ बिचारि पति करेहु बिबाहू। जेहिं न बहोरि होइ उर दाहू॥ ३ ॥

jauṃ na milihi baru girijahi jogū। giri jaḍa sahaja kahihi sabu logū॥ soi bicāri pati karehu bibāhū। jehiṃ na bahori hoi ura dāhū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
If no groom suitable for Girija is found, everyone will say that mountains are naturally dull. Therefore, consider this carefully and perform the marriage, so that no grief may remain in the heart afterward.
अस कहि परी चरन धरि सीसा। बोले सहित सनेह गिरीसा॥ बरु पावक प्रगटै ससि माहीं। नारद बचनु अन्यथा नाहीं॥ ४ ॥

asa kahi parī carana dhari sīsā। bole sahita saneha girīsā॥ baru pāvaka pragaṭai sasi māhīṃ। nārada bacanu anyathā nāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Having said this, Maina fell at her husband’s feet with her head bowed. Then Girisha spoke with affection: 'Even if fire were to appear on the moon, Narada’s words can never be false.'
प्रिया सोचु परिहरहु सबु सुमिरहु श्रीभगवान। पारबतिहि निरमयउ जेहिं सोइ करिहि कल्यान॥ ७१ ॥

priyā socu pariharahu sabu sumirahu śrībhagavāna। pārabatihi niramayau jehiṃ soi karihi kalyāna॥ 71 ॥
Meaning:
O beloved, cast aside all worry and remember the Lord. He who created Parvati will bring about what is auspicious.
अब जौं तुम्हहि सुता पर नेहू। तौ अस जाइ सिखावनु देहू॥ करै सो तपु जेहिं मिलहिं महेसू। आन उपायँ न मिटिहि कलेसू॥ १ ॥

aba jauṃ tumhahi sutā para nehū। tau asa jāi sikhāvanu dehū॥ karai so tapu jehiṃ milahiṃ mahesū। āna upāyaṃ na miṭihi kalesū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Now, if you love your daughter, then go and teach her this: let her perform such austerity that Shiva may be attained. No other remedy will remove this suffering.
नारद बचन सगर्भ सहेतू। सुंदर सब गुन निधि बृषकेतू॥ अस बिचारि तुम्ह तजहु असंका। सबहि भाँति संकरु अकलंका॥ २ ॥

nārada bacana sagarbha sahetū। sundara saba guna nidhi bṛṣaketū॥ asa bicāri tumha tajahu asaṃkā। sabahi bhāṃti saṃkaru akalaṃkā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Narada’s words are full of hidden meaning and reason, and Shiva is the treasure-house of all beautiful virtues. Reflecting thus, give up your doubt. Shiva is spotless in every way.
सुनि पति बचन हरषि मन माहीं। गई तुरत उठि गिरिजा पाहीं॥ उमहि बिलोकि नयन भरे बारी। सहित सनेह गोद बैठारी॥ ३ ॥

suni pati bacana haraṣi mana māhīṃ। gaī turata uṭhi girijā pāhīṃ॥ umahi biloki nayana bhare bārī। sahita saneha goda baiṭhārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing her husband’s words, Maina became glad in her heart and at once went to Girija. Seeing Uma, tears filled her eyes, and she lovingly seated her in her lap.
बारहिं बार लेति उर लाई। गदगद कंठ न कछु कहि जाई॥ जगत मातु सर्बग्य भवानी। मातु सुखद बोलीं मृदु बानी॥ ४ ॥

bārahiṃ bāra leti ura lāī। gadagada kaṃṭha na kachu kahi jāī॥ jagata mātu sarbagya bhavānī। mātu sukhada bolīṃ mṛdu bānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Again and again she held her to her heart. Choked with emotion, Maina could not say anything. Bhavani, the Mother of the world, is all-knowing. [Knowing her mother’s state of mind,] she spoke in soft words that gave her comfort—
सुनहि मातु मैं दीख अस सपन सुनावउँ तोहि। सुंदर गौर सुबिप्रबर अस उपदेसेउ मोहि॥ ७२ ॥

sunahi mātu maiṃ dīkha asa sapana sunāvauṃ tohi। sundara gaura subiprabara asa upadeseu mohi॥ 72 ॥
Meaning:
Mother, listen, I will tell you: I saw such a dream that a beautiful fair-complexioned excellent Brahmin gave me this counsel—
करहि जाइ तपु सैलकुमारी। नारद कहा सो सत्य बिचारी॥ मातु पितहि पुनि यह मत भावा। तपु सुखप्रद दुख दोष नसावा॥ १ ॥

karahi jāi tapu sailakumārī। nārada kahā so satya bicārī॥ mātu pitahi puni yaha mata bhāvā। tapu sukhaprada dukha doṣa nasāvā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Parvati, go and perform austerity, taking what Narada said as true. Then this view also pleased your parents. Austerity brings happiness and destroys suffering and faults.
तपबल रचइ प्रपंचु बिधाता। तपबल बिष्नु सकल जग त्राता॥ तपबल संभु करहिं संघारा। तपबल सेषु धरइ महिभारा॥ २ ॥

tapabala racai prapañcu bidhātā। tapabala biṣṇu sakala jaga trātā॥ tapabala saṃbhu karahiṃ saṃghārā। tapabala seṣu dharai mahibhārā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
By the power of austerity, Brahma creates the universe, and by the power of austerity, Vishnu protects the whole world. By the power of austerity, Shambhu destroys it, and by the power of austerity, Shesha bears the burden of the earth.
तप अधार सब सृष्टि भवानी। करहि जाइ तपु अस जियँ जानी॥ सुनत बचन बिसमित महतारी। सपन सुनायउ गिरिहि हँकारी॥ ३ ॥

tapa adhāra saba sṛṣṭi bhavānī। karahi jāi tapu asa jiyaṃ jānī॥ sunata bacana bisamita mahatārī। sapana sunāyau girihi haṃkārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Bhavani, the whole creation rests on austerity. Knowing this in your heart, go and perform austerity. Hearing these words, the mother was greatly astonished, and she called Himavat and told him that dream.
मातु पितहि बहुबिधि समुझाई। चलीं उमा तप हित हरषाई॥ प्रिय परिवार पिता अरु माता। भए बिकल मुख आव न बाता॥ ४ ॥

mātu pitahi bahubidhi samujhāī। calīṃ umā tapa hita haraṣāī॥ priya parivāra pitā aru mātā। bhae bikala mukha āva na bātā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
After persuading her parents in many ways, Parvati joyfully set out to perform austerity. Her dear family, father, and mother all became distraught; no one could speak a word.
बेदसिरा मुनि आइ तब सबहि कहा समुझाइ। पारबती महिमा सुनत रहे प्रबोधहि पाइ॥ ७३ ॥

bedasirā muni āi taba sabahi kahā samujhāi। pārabatī mahimā sunata rahe prabodhahi pāi॥ 73 ॥
Meaning:
Then the sage Vedasira came and, explaining everything to all, spoke. Hearing of Parvati's greatness, all were reassured.
उर धरि उमा प्रानपति चरना। जाइ बिपिन लागीं तपु करना॥ अति सुकुमार न तनु तप जोगू। पति पद सुमिरि तजेउ सबु भोगू॥ १ ॥

ura dhari umā prānapati caranā। jāi bipina lāgīṃ tapu karnā॥ ati sukumāra na tanu tapa jogū। pati pada sumiri tajeu sabu bhogū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Holding the feet of her lord, Shiva, in her heart, Parvati went to the forest and began performing austerity. Though her extremely delicate body was not fit for such penance, she renounced all pleasures, remembering her husband's feet.
नित नव चरन उपज अनुरागा। बिसरी देह तपहिं मनु लागा॥ संबत सहस मूल फल खाए। सागु खाइ सत बरष गवाँए॥ २ ॥

nita nava carana upaja anurāgā। bisarī deha tapahiṃ manu lāgā॥ sambata sahasa mūla phala khāe। sāgu khāi sata baraṣa gavāṃe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
A fresh love for the Lord's feet arose day by day, and her mind became so absorbed in austerity that all awareness of the body was forgotten. For a thousand years she ate roots and fruits, and then spent a hundred years eating greens.
कछु दिन भोजनु बारि बतासा। किए कठिन कछु दिन उपबासा॥ बेल पाती महि परइ सुखाई। तीनि सहस संबत सोइ खाई॥ ३ ॥

kachu dina bhojanu bāri batāsā। kie kaṭhina kachu dina upabāsā॥ bela pātī mahi parai sukhāī। tīni sahasa sambata soi khāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
For some days she lived on water and air, and for some days she observed severe fasts. For three thousand years she ate only the bel leaves that dried up and fell to the ground.
पुनि परिहरे सुखानेउ परना। उमहि नामु तब भयउ अपरना॥ देखि उमहि तप खीन सरीरा। ब्रह्मगिरा भै गगन गभीरा॥ ४ ॥

puni parihare sukhāneu parnā। umahi nāmu taba bhayau aparnā॥ dekhi umahi tapa khīna sarīrā। brahmagirā bhai gagana gabhīrā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then she gave up even the dried leaves; thus Parvati came to be called Aparna. Seeing Uma's body wasted by austerity, a deep voice of Brahma sounded from the sky.
भयउ मनोरथ सुफल तव सुनु गिरिराजकुमारि। परिहरु दुसह कलेस सब अब मिलिहहिं त्रिपुरारि॥ ७४ ॥

bhayau manoratha suphala tava sunu girirājakumāri। pariharu dusaha kalesa saba aba milihahiṃ tripurāri॥ 74 ॥
Meaning:
O daughter of the mountain king, hear this: your wish has borne fruit. Now give up all unbearable hardships. Tripurari will now meet you.
अस तपु काहुँ न कीन्ह भवानी। भए अनेक धीर मुनि ग्यानी॥ अब उर धरहु ब्रह्म बर बानी। सत्य सदा संतत सुचि जानी॥ १ ॥

asa tapu kāhuṃ na kīnha bhavānī। bhae aneka dhīra muni gyānī॥ aba ura dharahu brahma bara bānī। satya sadā saṃtata suci jānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Bhavani, no one has performed such austerity. Many steadfast sages and learned men have existed. Now hold in your heart the noble word of Brahma, knowing it to be ever true, constant, and pure.
आवै पिता बोलावन जबहीं। हठ परिहरि घर जाएहु तबहीं॥ मिलहिं तुम्हहि जब सप्त रिषीसा। जानेहु तब प्रमान बागीसा॥ २ ॥

āvai pitā bolāvana jabahīṃ। haṭha parihari ghara jāehu tabahīṃ॥ milahiṃ tumhahi jaba sapta riṣīsā। jānehu taba pramāna bāgīsā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When your father comes to call you, then abandon your obstinacy and return home. And when the seven great sages meet you, then know this utterance to be true.
सुनत गिरा बिधि गगन बखानी। पुलक गात गिरिजा हरषानी॥ उमा चरित सुंदर मैं गावा। सुनहु संभु कर चरित सुहावा॥ ३ ॥

sunata girā bidhi gagana bakhānī। pulaka gāta girijā haraṣānī॥ umā carita sundara maiṃ gāvā। sunahu saṃbhu kara carita suhāvā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing this divine voice spoken from the sky by Brahma, Parvati was delighted, and her body thrilled with joy. [Yajnavalkya said to Bharadwaja:] I have sung the beautiful story of Parvati; now listen to the lovely story of Shiva.
जब तें सतीं जाइ तनु त्यागा। तब तें सिव मन भयउ बिरागा॥ जपहिं सदा रघुनायक नामा। जहँ तहँ सुनहिं राम गुन ग्रामा॥ ४ ॥

jaba teṃ satīṃ jāi tanu tyāgā। taba teṃ siva mana bhayau virāgā॥ japahiṃ sadā raghunāyaka nāmā। jahaṃ tahaṃ sunahiṃ rāma guna grāmā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Since Sati went and gave up her body, detachment arose in Shiva's mind. He continually chanted the name of Raghunath and listened everywhere to accounts of Rama's virtues.
चिदानंद सुखधाम सिव बिगत मोह मद काम। बिचरहिं महि धरि हृदयँ हरि सकल लोक अभिराम॥ ७५ ॥

cidānanda sukadhāma siva bigata moha mada kāma। bicarahiṃ mahi dhari hṛdayaṃ hari sakala loka abhirāma॥ 75 ॥
Meaning:
Shiva, the abode of bliss, free from delusion, pride, and desire, wandered over the earth while holding in his heart Lord Hari, the delight of all worlds, immersed in meditation on Him.
कतहुँ मुनिन्ह उपदेसहिं ग्याना। कतहुँ राम गुन करहिं बखाना॥ जदपि अकाम तदपि भगवाना। भगत बिरह दुख दुखित सुजाना॥ १ ॥

katahuṃ muninha upadesahiṃ gyānā। katahuṃ rāma guna karahiṃ bakhānā॥ jadapi akāma tadapi bhagavānā। bhagata biraha dukha dukhita sujānā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
At some places he taught knowledge to sages, and at others he praised the virtues of Rama. Although Shiva, the wise one, is desireless, the Lord is nonetheless distressed by the pain of separation from his devotee.
एहि बिधि गयउ कालु बहु बीती। नित नै होइ राम पद प्रीती॥ नेमु प्रेमु संकर कर देखा। अबिचल हृदयँ भगति कै रेखा॥ २ ॥

प्रगटे रामु कृतग्य कृपाला। रूप सील निधि तेज बिसाला॥ बहु प्रकार संकरहि सराहा। तुम्ह बिनु अस ब्रतु को निरबाहा॥ ३ ॥

pragaṭe rāmu kṛtagya kṛpālā। rūpa sīla nidhi teja bisālā॥ bahu prakāra saṃkarahi sarāhā। tumha binu asa bratu ko nirabāhā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then Lord Rama appeared—grateful, compassionate, and the treasure of beauty, character, and immense radiance. He praised Shiva in many ways and said, 'Without you, who could carry out such a कठिन vow?'
बहुबिधि राम सिवहि समुझावा। पारबती कर जन्मु सुनावा॥ अति पुनीत गिरिजा कै करनी। बिस्तर सहित कृपानिधि बरनी॥ ४ ॥
