Sati Enters Yogic Fire and Daksha’s Yagya Is Destroyed
Grieved by the insult to Shiva at Daksha’s Yagya, Sati gives up her body in yogic fire. The Yagya is then destroyed, and the assembled beings are overcome with shock and sorrow.

सुनहु सभासद सकल मुनिंदा। कही सुनी जिन्ह संकर निंदा॥ सो फलु तुरत लहब सब काहूँ। भली भाँति पछिताब पिताहूँ॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
sunahu sabhāsada sakala muniṃdā। kahī sunī jinhaṃ saṃkara nindā॥ so phalu turata lahaba saba kāhūṃ। bhalī bhāṃti pachitāba pitāhūṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Listen, O members of the assembly and all sages! Whoever has spoken or even heard the slander of Shiva here will receive its fruit immediately, and my father Daksha too will repent thoroughly.
संत संभु श्रीपति अपबादा। सुनिअ जहाँ तहँ असि मरजादा॥ काटिअ तासु जीभ जो बसाई। श्रवन मूदि न त चलिअ पराई॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
santa sambhu śrīpati apabādā। suni'a jahāṃ tahaṃ asi marajādā॥ kāṭia tāsu jībha jo basāī। śravana mūdi na ta calia parāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Wherever the slander of saints, Shiva, or Lord Vishnu is heard, there is such a rule of conduct: if one can, cut out the slanderer’s tongue; if not, then cover one’s ears and leave at once.
जगदातमा महेसु पुरारी। जगत जनक सब के हितकारी॥ पिता मंदमति निंदत तेही। दच्छ सुक्र संभव यह देही॥ ३ ॥

jagadātmā mahesu purārī। jagata janaka saba ke hitakārī॥ pitā mandamati nindata tehī। daccha sukra saṃbhava yaha dehī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Lord Maheshvara, the destroyer of Tripura, is the very soul of the whole world. He is the father of the universe and the benefactor of all. Yet my foolish father slanders him, and this body of mine has been born from Daksha’s own seed.
तजिहउँ तुरत देह तेहि हेतू। उर धरि चंद्रमौलि बृषकेतू॥ अस कहि जोग अगिनि तनु जारा। भयउ सकल मख हाहाकारा॥ ४ ॥

tajihauṃ turata deha tehi hetū। ura dhari candramouli vṛṣaketū॥ asa kahi joga agini tanu jārā। bhayau sakala makha hāhākārā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Therefore, holding the crescent-crowned Vṛṣaketu Shiva in my heart, I shall at once give up this body.” Saying this, Sati burned her body in the fire of yoga. A great uproar broke out throughout the sacrificial hall.
सती मरनु सुनि संभु गन लगे करन मख खीस। जग्य बिधंस बिलोकि भृगु रच्छा कीन्हि मुनीस॥ ६४ ॥

satī maranu suni sambhu gana lage karana makha khīsa। jagya bidhaṃsa biloki bhṛgu racchā kīnhi munīsa॥ 64 ॥
Meaning:
When Shiva’s attendants heard of Sati’s death, they began to destroy the sacrifice. Seeing the sacrifice being ruined, the sage Bhṛgu protected it.
समाचार सब संकर पाए। बीरभद्रु करि कोप पठाए॥ जग्य बिधंस जाइ तिन्ह कीन्हा। सकल सुरन्ह बिधिवत फलु दीन्हा॥ १ ॥

samācāra saba saṃkara pāe। vīrabhadru kari kopa paṭhāe॥ jagya bidhaṃsa jāi tinh kīnha। sakala suranha bidhivata phalu dīnhā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
When Shiva received all this news, he sent Vīrabhadra in anger. Vīrabhadra went there, destroyed the sacrifice, and gave the gods their due punishment.
भै जगबिदित दच्छ गति सोई। जसि कछु संभु बिमुख कै होई॥ यह इतिहास सकल जग जानी। ताते मैं संछेप बखानी॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
bhai jagabidita daccha gati soī। jasi kachu sambhu bimukha kai hoī॥ yaha itihāsa sakala jaga jānī। tāte maiṃ saṃchepa bakhānī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Daksha met the same fate for which he became world-famous—a fate that befalls those who turn away from Shiva. The whole world knows this history, so I have narrated it briefly.
