Dasharatha's Final Conversation with Sumantra and His Death
As he hears the news from Sumantra, Dasharatha's anguish deepens. Unable to endure separation from Rama, he finally gives up his life.

भूप सुमंत्रु लीन्ह उर लाई। बूड़त कछु अधार जनु पाई॥ सहित सनेह निकट बैठारी। पूँछत राउ नयन भरि बारी॥ १ ॥

Meaning:
The king embraced Sumantra to his heart, as if a drowning man had found some support. Seating him nearby with affection, and with tears filling his eyes, the king began to ask—
राम कुसल कहु सखा सनेही। कहँ रघुनाथु लखनु बैदेही॥ आने फेरि कि बनहि सिधाए। सुनत सचिव लोचन जल छाए॥ २ ॥

rāma kusala kahu sakhā sanehī। kahaṃ raghunāthu lakhanu baidehī॥ āne feri ki banahiṃ sidhāe। sunata saciva locana jala chāe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
O loving friend, tell me of Rama's welfare. Where are Rama, Lakshmana, and Janaki? Have you brought them back, or have they gone off to the forest? Hearing this, the minister's eyes filled with tears.
सोक बिकल पुनि पूँछ नरेसू। कहु सिय राम लखन संदेसू॥ राम रूप गुन सील सुभाऊ। सुमिरि सुमिरि उर सोचत राऊ॥ ३ ॥

soka bikal puni pūṃcha naresū। kahu siya rāma lakhana sandēsū॥ rāma rūpa guna sīla subhāū। sumiri sumiri ura socata rāū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
In grief and agitation, the king asked again: Tell me the message from Sita, Rama, and Lakshmana. Remembering Rama's form, virtues, character, and nature again and again, the king brooded in his heart.
राउ सुनाइ दीन्ह बनबासू। सुनि मन भयउ न हरषु हराँसू॥ सो सुत बिछुरत गए न प्राना। को पापी बड़ मोहि समाना॥ ४ ॥

rāu sunāi dīnha banabāsū। suni mana bhayau na haraṣu harāṃsū॥ so suta bichurata gae na prānā। ko pāpī baḍa mohi samānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
And he says, 'I spoke of the king's command and sent him into exile. Even after hearing it, his mind showed neither joy nor sorrow. If my life did not leave me even when I was parting from such a son, then who is the greater sinner than me?'
सखा रामु सिय लखनु जहँ तहाँ मोहि पहुँचाउ। नाहिं त चाहत चलन अब प्रान कहउँ सतिभाउ॥ १४९ ॥

sakhā rāmu siya lakhanu jahaṃ tahāṃ mohi pahuṃcāu। nāhiṃ ta cāhata calana aba prāna kahauṃ satibhāu॥ 149 ॥
Meaning:
O friend, take me to where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana are. Otherwise, I tell you sincerely that my life now wishes only to depart.
पुनि पुनि पूँछत मंत्रिहि राऊ। प्रियतम सुअन सँदेस सुनाऊ॥ करहि सखा सोइ बेगि उपाऊ। रामु लखनु सिय नयन देखाऊ॥ १ ॥

puni puni pūṃchata maṃtrihi rāū। priyatama suana saṃdesa sunāū॥ karahi sakhā soi begi upāū। rāmu lakhanu siya nayana dekhāū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Again and again the king asks the minister: Tell me the message of my beloved sons. O friend, quickly find some way by which I may see Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita with my own eyes.
सचिव धीर धरि कह मृदु बानी। महाराज तुम्ह पंडित ग्यानी॥ बीर सुधीर धुरंधर देवा। साधु समाजु सदा तुम्ह सेवा॥ २ ॥

saciva dhīra dhari kaha mṛdu bānī। mahārāja tumha paṃḍita gyānī॥ bīra sudhīra dhuraṃdhara devā। sādhu samāju sadā tumha sevā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The minister, steadying himself, spoke in gentle words: 'Maharaja, you are learned and wise. O Lord, you are valiant, steadfast, and foremost among the patient. You have always served the company of the holy.'
जनम मरन सब दुख सुख भोगा। हानि लाभु प्रिय मिलन बियोगा॥ काल करम बस होहिं गोसाईं। बरबस राति दिवस की नाईं॥ ३ ॥

janama marana saba dukha sukha bhogā। hāni lābhu priya milana biyogā॥ kāla karama basa hohiṃ gosāīṃ। barabasa rāti divasa kī nāīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Birth and death, the experience of joy and sorrow, gain and loss, meeting and separation from loved ones—all these, O Lord, happen inevitably under the control of time and karma, like day and night.
सुख हरषहिं जड़ दुख बिलखाहीं। दोउ सम धीर धरहिं मन माहीं॥ धीरज धरहु बिबेकु बिचारी। छाड़िअ सोच सकल हितकारी॥ ४ ॥

sukha haraṣahiṃ jaḍa dukha bilakhāhīṃ। dou sama dhīra dharahiṃ mana māhīṃ॥ dhīraja dharahu bibeku bichārī। chāṛia soca sakala hitakārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Fools rejoice in happiness and weep in sorrow, but the steadfast hold both as equal in their hearts. Be patient; consider wisely and give up grief, for steadfastness is beneficial to all.
प्रथम बासु तमसा भयउ दूसर सुरसरि तीर। न्हाइ रहे जलपानु करि सिय समेत दोउ बीर॥ १५० ॥

prathama bāsu tamasā bhayau dūsara surasari tīra। nhāi rahe jalapānu kari siya sameta dou bīra॥ 150 ॥
Meaning:
Rama's first halt was on the bank of the Tamasa, and the second on the bank of the celestial river, the Ganga. There, the two brothers, together with Sita, bathed and then rested after taking water.
केवट कीन्हि बहुत सेवकाई। सो जामिनि सिंगरौर गवाँई॥ होत प्रात बट छीरु मगावा। जटा मुकुट निज सीस बनावा॥ १ ॥

kevaṭa kīnhi bahuta sevakāī। so jāmini siṃgaraur gavāṃī॥ hota prāta baṭa chīru magāvā। jaṭā mukuṭa nija sīsa banāvā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Kevat rendered great service. He spent that night in Singraur itself. At daybreak, banyan sap was brought, and matted-hair crowns were made for their heads.
राम सखाँ तब नाव मगाई। प्रिया चढ़ाइ चढ़े रघुराई॥ लखन बान धनु धरे बनाई। आपु चढ़े प्रभु आयसु पाई॥ २ ॥

rāma sakhāṃ taba nāva magāī। priyā chaṛhāi chaṛhe raghurāī॥ lakhana bāna dhanu dhare banāī। āpu chaṛhe prabhu āyasu pāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then Rama's friend Nishadraj had a boat brought. First, Sita was helped aboard, and then Lord Raghunath boarded. Lakshmana arranged his bow and arrows, and the Lord himself boarded after receiving the command.
बिकल बिलोकि मोहि रघुबीरा। बोले मधुर बचन धरि धीरा॥ तात प्रनामु तात सन कहेहू। बार बार पद पंकज गहेहू॥ ३ ॥

bikala biloki mohi raghubīrā। bole madhura vacana dhari dhīrā॥ tāta pranāmu tāta sana kahehū। bāra bāra pada paṃkaja gahehū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing me distraught, Sri Ramachandra spoke sweetly, with composure: 'Father, convey my respects to Father, and again and again hold fast to his lotus feet on my behalf.'
करबि पायँ परि बिनय बहोरी। तात करिअ जनि चिंता मोरी॥ बन मग मंगल कुसल हमारें। कृपा अनुग्रह पुन्य तुम्हारें॥ ४ ॥

karabi pāyaṃ pari binaya bahorī। tāta kariā jani ciṃtā morī॥ bana maga maṃgala kusala hamāreṃ। kṛpā anugraha punya tumhāreṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then, bowing at his feet, make this request: 'Father, do not worry about me. By your grace, favor, and merit, our welfare on the road and in the forest will be secured.'
तुम्हरें अनुग्रह तात कानन जात सब सुखु पाइहौं। प्रतिपालि आयसु कुसल देखन पाय पुनि फिरि आइहौं॥ जननीं सकल परितोषि परि परि पायँ करि बिनती घनी। तुलसी करेहु सोइ जतनु जेहिं कुसली रहहिं कोसलधनी॥

tumhareṃ anugraha tāta kānana jāta saba sukhu pāihauṃ। pratipāli āyasu kusala dekhana pāya puni phiri āihauṃ॥ jananīṃ sakala paritoṣi pari pari pāyaṃ kari binatī ghanī। tulasī karehu soi jatanu jehiṃ kusalī rahahiṃ kosaladhanī॥
Meaning:
O father, by your grace I shall receive all happiness while going to the forest. By faithfully obeying your command, I shall return again after seeing you safely. Satisfy all the mothers, bowing again and again at their feet and making earnest entreaty to them. Tulsidas says: do whatever effort is needed so that the Lord of Kosala may remain well.
गुर सन कहब सँदेसु बार बार पद पदुम गहि। करब सोइ उपदेसु जेहिं न सोच मोहि अवधपति॥ १५१ ॥

guru sana kahaba saṃdesu bāra bāra pada paduma gahi। karaba soi upadesu jehiṃ na soca mohi avadhapati॥ 151 ॥
Meaning:
Again and again, holding the lotus feet, tell my message to the guru: let him give such counsel that the Lord of Ayodhya, my father, may not remain sorrowful because of me.
पुरजन परिजन सकल निहोरी। तात सुनाएहु बिनती मोरी॥ सोइ सब भाँति मोर हितकारी। जातें रह नरनाहु सुखारी॥ १ ॥

purajana parijana sakala nihorī। tāt sunāehu bintī morī॥ soi saba bhāṃti mora hitakārī। jāteṃ raha naranāhu sukhārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O dear father, make my entreaty known to all the townspeople and kinsmen: tell them that the person who is beneficial to me in every way is the one by whose conduct the king remains happy.
कहब सँदेसु भरत के आएँ। नीति न तजिअ राजपदु पाएँ॥ पालेहु प्रजहि करम मन बानी। सेएहु मातु सकल सम जानी॥ २ ॥

kahaba saṃdesu bharata ke āeṃ। nīti na tajia rājapadu pāeṃ॥ pālehu prajahi karama mana bānī। se ehu mātu sakala sama jānī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When Bharata comes, tell him this message of mine: after obtaining the kingly office, do not abandon righteousness; protect the people in deed, word, and mind, and serve all the mothers, regarding them all as equal.
ओर निबाहेहु भायप भाई। करि पितु मातु सुजन सेवकाई॥ तात भाँति तेहि राखब राऊ। सोच मोर जेहिं करै न काऊ॥ ३ ॥

ora nibāhehu bhāyapa bhāī। kari pitu mātu sujana sevakāī॥ tāt bhāṃti tehi rākhaba rāū। soca mora jehiṃ karai na kāū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
And, O brother, remain faithful to brotherhood to the very end by serving father, mother, and good people. Dear father, keep the king in such a way that he never, in any manner, feels worry on my account.
लखन कहे कछु बचन कठोरा। बरजि राम पुनि मोहि निहोरा॥ बार बार निज सपथ देवाई। कहबि न तात लखन लरिकाई॥ ४ ॥

lakhana kahe kachu bacana kaṭhorā। baraji rāma puni mohi nihorā॥ bāra bāra nija sapatha devāī। kahabi na tāt lakhana larikāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Lakshmana spoke some harsh words. But Shri Rama rebuked him, then appealed to me again and again and made me swear repeatedly, saying, 'Dear father, do not mention Lakshmana's childishness there.'
कहि प्रनामु कछु कहन लिय सिय भइ सिथिल सनेह। थकित बचन लोचन सजल पुलक पल्लवित देह॥ १५२ ॥

kahi pranāmu kachu kahana liya siya bhai sithila saneha। thakita bacana locana sajala pulaka pallavita deha॥ 152 ॥
Meaning:
After offering salutations, Sita also began to speak a little, but overcome by affection she grew faint. Her speech faltered, her eyes filled with tears, and her body bristled with gooseflesh.
तेहि अवसर रघुबर रुख पाई। केवट पारहि नाव चलाई॥ रघुकुलतिलक चले एहि भाँती। देखउँ ठाढ़ कुलिस धरि छाती॥ १ ॥

tehi avasara raghuvara rukha pāī। kevaṭa pārahi nāva calāī॥ raghukulatilaka cale ehi bhāṃtī। dekhauṃ ṭhāḍha kulisa dhari chātī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
At that very moment, seeing Rama's intention, the boatman rowed the boat across. In this way, the crown jewel of Raghu's line set forth, and I stood there, as if holding a thunderbolt upon my chest, watching.
मैं आपन किमि कहौं कलेसू। जिअत फिरेउँ लेइ राम सँदेसू॥ अस कहि सचिव बचन रहि गयऊ। हानि गलानि सोच बस भयऊ॥ २ ॥

maiṃ āpana kimi kahauṃ kalesū। jiat phireuṃ lei rāma saṃdesū॥ asa kahi saciva bacana rahi gayau। hāni galāni soca basa bhayau॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
How can I describe my grief, when I have returned alive after carrying Shri Rama's message? Speaking thus, the minister's voice failed him; he fell silent and was overcome by loss, remorse, and sorrow.
सूत बचन सुनतहिं नरनाहू। परेउ धरनि उर दारुन दाहू॥ तलफत बिषम मोह मन मापा। माजा मनहुँ मीन कहुँ ब्यापा॥ ३ ॥

sūta bacana sunatahiṃ naranāhū। pareu dharani ura dāruna dāhū॥ talaphata biṣama moha mana māpā। mājā manahuṃ mīna kahuṃ byāpā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as the charioteer Sumantra's words were heard, the king fell to the ground, and a dreadful burning seized his heart. He writhed in agony, and his mind was overwhelmed by terrible delusion, as though a fish had been afflicted by a muddy flood.
करि बिलाप सब रोवहिं रानी। महा बिपति किमि जाइ बखानी॥ सुनि बिलाप दुखहू दुखु लागा। धीरजहू कर धीरजु भागा॥ ४ ॥

kari bilāpa saba rovahiṃ rānī। mahā bipati kimi jāi bakhānī॥ suni bilāpa dukhahū dukhu lāgā। dhīrajahū kara dhīraju bhāgā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
All the queens wept, lamenting aloud. How can that great calamity be described? Hearing that lamentation, even sorrow felt sorrow, and even composure itself fled away.
भयउ कोलाहलु अवध अति सुनि नृप राउर सोरु। बिपुल बिहग बन परेउ निसि मानहुँ कुलिस कठोरु॥ १५३ ॥

bhayau kolāhalu avadha ati suni nṛpa rāura soru। bipula bihaga bana pareu nisi mānahuṃ kulisa kaṭhoru॥ 153 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the cries from the royal household, a great uproar arose throughout Ayodhya. It was as though a hard thunderbolt had fallen at night upon a vast forest of birds.
प्रान कंठगत भयउ भुआलू। मनि बिहीन जनु ब्याकुल ब्यालू॥ इंद्रीं सकल बिकल भइँ भारी। जनु सर सरसिज बनु बिनु बारी॥ १ ॥

prāna kaṃṭhagata bhayau bhuālū। mani bihīna janu byākula byālū॥ iṃdrīṃ sakala bikala bhaĩ bhārī। janu sara sarasija bana binu bārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The king's life seemed to rise to his throat. It was as if a serpent without a jewel had become restless and dying. All his senses were utterly distressed, like a forest of lotuses in a lake bereft of water.
कौसल्याँ नृपु दीख मलाना। रबिकुल रबि अँथयउ जियँ जाना॥ उर धरि धीर राम महतारी। बोली बचन समय अनुसारी॥ २ ॥

kausalyāṃ nṛpu dīkha malānā। rabikula rabi aṃthayau jiyaṃ jānā॥ ura dhari dhīra rāma mahatārī। bolī bacana samaya anusārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When Kaushalya saw the king in deep distress, she understood in her heart that the sun of the solar race was now setting. Then, gathering courage in her heart, Mother Kaushalya spoke words suited to the moment.
नाथ समुझि मन करिअ बिचारू। राम बियोग पयोधि अपारू॥ करनधार तुम्ह अवध जहाजू। चढ़ेउ सकल प्रिय पथिक समाजू॥ ३ ॥

nātha samujhi mana karia bicārū। rāma biyoga payodhi apārū॥ karanadhāra tumha avadha jahājū। chaṛheu sakala priya pathika samājū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, consider in your mind that separation from Shri Rama is an endless ocean. Ayodhya is the ship, and you are its helmsman. All the dear ones, kinsmen and subjects alike, are the company of passengers aboard this vessel.
धीरजु धरिअ त पाइअ पारू। नाहिं त बूड़िहि सबु परिवारू॥ जौं जियँ धरिअ बिनय पिय मोरी। रामु लखनु सिय मिलहिं बहोरी॥ ४ ॥

dhīraju dharia ta pāia pārū। nāhiṃ ta būḍhihi sabu parivārū॥ jaũ jiyaṃ dharia binaya piya morī। rāmu lakhanu siya milahiṃ bahorī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
If you maintain patience, then all will cross over safely; otherwise the whole family will drown. Dear master, if you keep my plea in your heart, Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita will meet you again.
प्रिया बचन मृदु सुनत नृपु चितयउ आँखि उघारि। तलफत मीन मलीन जनु सींचत सीतल बारि॥ १५४ ॥

Meaning:
As the king heard his beloved wife's gentle words, he opened his eyes and looked up. It was as though cool water were being sprinkled upon a struggling, helpless fish.
धरि धीरजु उठि बैठ भुआलू। कहु सुमंत्र कहँ राम कृपालू॥ कहाँ लखनु कहँ रामु सनेही। कहँ प्रिय पुत्रबधू बैदेही॥ १ ॥

dhari dhīraju uṭhi baiṭha bhuālū। kahu sumaṃtra kahaṃ rāma kṛpālū॥ kahāṃ lakhanu kahaṃ rāmu sanehī। kahaṃ priya putrabadhū baidehī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Gathering patience, the king rose and sat up, and said, 'Sumantra, tell me: where are merciful Rama and Lakshmana? Where is dear Rama, and where is my beloved daughter-in-law, Vaidehi?'
बिलपत राउ बिकल बहु भाँती। भइ जुग सरिस सिराति न राती॥ तापस अंध साप सुधि आई। कौसल्यहि सब कथा सुनाई॥ २ ॥

bilapata rāu bikala bahu bhāṃtī। bhai juga sarisa sirāti na rātī॥ tāpasa aṃdha sāpa sudhi āī। kausalyahi saba kathā sunāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The king, grief-stricken, lamented in many ways. That night became as long as an age and would not pass. He remembered the curse of the blind ascetic and told the whole story to Kaushalya.
भयउ बिकल बरनत इतिहासा। राम रहित धिग जीवन आसा॥ सो तनु राखि करब मैं काहा। जेहिं न प्रेम पनु मोर निबाहा॥ ३ ॥

bhayau bikala baranata itihāsā। rāma rahita dhiga jīvana āsā॥ so tanu rākhi karaba maiṃ kāhā। jehiṃ na prema panu mora nibhāhā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
As he narrated that history, the king became distraught and said, 'Cursed be the hope of living without Rama. What shall I do with this body, with which my vow of love has not been fulfilled?'
हा रघुनंदन प्रान पिरीते। तुम्ह बिनु जिअत बहुत दिन बीते॥ हा जानकी लखन हा रघुबर। हा पितु हित चित चातक जलधर॥ ४ ॥

hā raghunandana prāna pirīte। tumha binu jiat bahuta dina bīte॥ hā jānakī lakhana hā raghubara। hā pitu hita cita cātaka jaladhara॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Alas, O delight of the Raghu line, my life-breath and beloved! So many days have passed while I have lived without you. Alas, Sita! Alas, Lakshmana! Alas, Raghuvara! Alas, cloud that gladdens the heart of the cakora-like father!
राम राम कहि राम कहि राम राम कहि राम। तनु परिहरि रघुबर बिरहँ राउ गयउ सुरधाम॥ १५५ ॥

Meaning:
Saying 'Rama, Rama,' then again 'Rama, Rama,' and once more 'Rama, Rama,' the king laid aside his body in separation from Shri Rama and departed for the heavenly abode.
जिअन मरन फलु दसरथ पावा। अंड अनेक अमल जसु छावा॥ जिअत राम बिधु बदनु निहारा। राम बिरह करि मरनु सँवारा॥ १ ॥

jiana marana phalu dasaratha pāvā। aṃḍa aneka amala jasu chāvā॥ jiata rāma bidhu badanu nihārā। rāma biraha kari maranu saṃvārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Dasharatha alone reaped the fruits of both living and dying; his pure fame spread through countless worlds. While alive he beheld Shri Rama's moonlike face, and by taking Rama's separation as the occasion, he perfected his death.
सोक बिकल सब रोवहिं रानी। रूपु सीलु बलु तेजु बखानी॥ करहिं बिलाप अनेक प्रकारा। परहिं भूमितल बारहिं बारा॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
All the queens, overcome with grief, wept in distress. They lamented in many ways, praising the king's beauty, gentleness, strength, and splendor, and fell again and again to the ground.
बिलपहिं बिकल दास अरु दासी। घर घर रुदनु करहिं पुरबासी॥ अँथयउ आजु भानुकुल भानू। धरम अवधि गुन रूप निधानू॥ ३ ॥

bilapahiṃ bikala dāsa aru dāsī। ghara ghara rudanu karahiṃ purabāsī॥ aṃthayau āju bhānukula bhānū। dharama avadhi guna rūpa nidhānū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The male and female servants lamented in anguish, and the townspeople wept in every house. They said, 'Today the sun of the Solar dynasty, the treasure of virtue, form, and righteousness, has set!'
गारीं सकल कैकइहि देहीं। नयन बिहीन कीन्ह जग जेहीं॥ एहि बिधि बिलपत रैनि बिहानी। आए सकल महामुनि ग्यानी॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
gārīṃ sakala kaika ihi dehīṃ। nayana bihīna kīnha jaga jehīṃ॥ ehi bidhi bilapata raini bihānī। āe sakala mahāmuni gyānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Everyone abused Kaikeyi, the one who had made the world sightless. Thus lamenting, the night passed. At dawn, all the great and wise sages arrived.
तब बसिष्ठ मुनि समय सम कहि अनेक इतिहास। सोक नेवारेउ सबहि कर निज बिग्यान प्रकास॥ १५६ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
taba basiṣṭha muni samaya sama kahi aneka itihāsa। soka nevāreu sabahi kara nija bigyāna prakāsa॥ 156 ॥
Meaning:
Then Sage Vasistha, speaking many timely accounts, dispelled everyone's sorrow with the light of his spiritual wisdom.
