Bharata's Longing, Hanuman's Arrival, and Joy in Ayodhya
Bharata is deeply anguished in separation from Rama. Hanuman arrives with the joyful news of Rama's return, and Ayodhya fills with celebration.

रहेउ एक दिन अवधि अधारा। समुझत मन दुख भयउ अपारा॥ कारन कवन नाथ नहिं आयउ। जानि कुटिल किधौं मोहि बिसरायउ॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
raheu eka dina avadhi adhārā। samujhata mana dukha bhayau apārā॥ kārana kavana nātha nahiṃ āyau। jāni kuṭila kidhauṃ mohi bisarāyau॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Only one day remained in the life-supporting period of waiting. As soon as he reflected on this, Bharata’s heart filled with boundless sorrow. What could be the reason that the Lord had not come? Had He judged me to be crooked and thus forgotten me?
अहह धन्य लछिमन बड़भागी। राम पदारबिंदु अनुरागी॥ कपटी कुटिल मोहि प्रभु चीन्हा। ताते नाथ संग नहिं लीन्हा॥ २ ॥

ahaha dhanya lachimana baḍabhāgī। rāma padārabindu anurāgī॥ kapaṭī kuṭila mohi prabhu cīnhā। tāte nātha saṅga nahiṃ līnhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Ah! Lakshmana is truly blessed and fortunate, for he is devoted to the lotus feet of Shri Ramchandra. But the Lord recognized me as deceitful and crooked, and so the Lord did not take me along!
जौं करनी समुझै प्रभु मोरी। नहिं निस्तार कलप सत कोरी॥ जन अवगुन प्रभु मान न काऊ। दीन बंधु अति मृदुल सुभाऊ॥ ३ ॥

jauṃ karanī samujhai prabhu morī। nahiṃ nistāra kalapa sata korī॥ jana avaguna prabhu māna na kāū। dīna bandhu ati mr̥dula subhāū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
If the Lord were to consider my deeds, then even in countless ages I could never be delivered. Yet there is hope in this: the Lord never takes account of a servant’s faults. He is the friend of the humble and is exceedingly tender in nature.
मोरे जियँ भरोस दृढ़ सोई। मिलिहहिं राम सगुन सुभ होई॥ बीतें अवधि रहहिं जौं प्राना। अधम कवन जग मोहि समाना॥ ४ ॥

more jiyaṁ bharosa dṛḍha soī। milihahiṃ rāma saguna subha hoī॥ bīteṃ avadhi rahahiṃ jauṃ prānā। adhama kavana jaga mohi samānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Therefore I have firm faith in my heart that Shri Ramji will surely return, for the omens are most auspicious. But if the period passes and my life still remains, then who in the world would be more lowly than I?
राम बिरह सागर महँ भरत मगन मन होत। बिप्र रूप धरि पवनसुत आइ गयउ जनु पोत॥ १ (क) ॥

rāma biraha sāgara mahaṃ bharata magana mana hota। bipra rūpa dhari pavanasuta āi gayau janu pota॥ 1 (a) ॥
Meaning:
While Bharata’s mind was drowning in the ocean of separation from Rama, Hanuman, the son of the Wind-god, arrived in the guise of a Brahmin, just as though a boat had come to save one about to drown.
बैठे देखि कुसासन जटा मुकुट कृस गात। राम राम रघुपति जपत स्रवत नयन जलजात॥ १ (ख) ॥

baiṭhe dekhi kusāsana jaṭā mukuṭa kr̥sa gāta। rāma rāma raghupati japata sravata nayana jalajāta॥ 1 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman saw Bharata seated on a mat of kusa grass, his emaciated body crowned with matted locks, chanting ‘Rama! Rama! Raghupati!’ while streams of lotus-like tears flowed from his eyes.
देखत हनूमान अति हरषेउ। पुलक गात लोचन जल बरषेउ॥ मन महँ बहुत भाँति सुख मानी। बोलेउ श्रवन सुधा सम बानी॥ १ ॥

dekhat hanūmāna ati haraṣeu। pulaka gāta locana jala baraṣeu॥ mana mahaṁ bahuta bhāṃti sukha mānī। boleu śravana sudhā sama bānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing him, Hanuman became overjoyed. His body thrilled with delight and tears streamed from his eyes. Feeling many kinds of joy in his heart, he spoke words as sweet as nectar to the ear.
जासु बिरहँ सोचहु दिन राती। रटहु निरंतर गुन गन पाँती॥ रघुकुल तिलक सुजन सुखदाता। आयउ कुसल देव मुनि त्राता॥ २ ॥

jāsu birahaṃ socahu dina rātī। raṭahu nirantara guna gana pāṃtī॥ raghukula tilaka sujana sukhadātā। āyau kusala deva muni trātā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The very One for whose separation you grieve day and night, and whose rows of virtues you keep repeating without pause—He, the ornament of the Raghu line, giver of joy to the good, and protector of gods and sages—has come safely.
रिपु रन जीति सुजस सुर गावत। सीता सहित अनुज प्रभु आवत॥ सुनत बचन बिसरे सब दूखा। तृषावंत जिमि पाइ पियूषा॥ ३ ॥

ripu rana jīti sujasa sura gāvata। sītā sahita anuja prabhu āvata॥ sunata vacana bisare saba dūkhā। tr̥ṣāvanta jimi pāi piyūṣā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
After defeating the enemy in battle, the Lord is coming with Sita and Lakshmana; the gods are singing His glorious praise. Hearing these words, all sorrow was forgotten, just as a thirsty man forgets his suffering upon receiving nectar.
को तुम्ह तात कहाँ ते आए। मोहि परम प्रिय बचन सुनाए॥ मारुत सुत मैं कपि हनुमाना। नामु मोर सुनु कृपानिधाना॥ ४ ॥

ko tumha tāta kahāṁ te āe। mohi parama priya vacana sunāe॥ māruta suta maiṃ kapi hanumānā। nāmu mora sunu kr̥pānidhānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
“Who are you, dear one, and where have you come from, that you have spoken such supremely pleasing words to me?” Hanuman said, “Hear me, O treasure of compassion: I am the son of the Wind and by race a monkey; my name is Hanuman.”
दीनबंधु रघुपति कर किंकर। सुनत भरत भेंटेउ उठि सादर॥ मिलत प्रेम नहिं हृदयँ समाता। नयन स्रवत जल पुलकित गाता॥ ५ ॥

dīnabandhu raghupati kara kiṃkara। sunata bharata bheṭeu uṭhi sādara॥ milata prema nahiṃ hṛdayaṁ samātā। nayana sravata jala pulakita gātā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
I am the servant of Shri Raghunath, the friend of the afflicted. Hearing this, Bharata rose and embraced Hanuman respectfully. As they met, love could not be contained in the heart; tears flowed from the eyes and the body thrilled with joy.
कपि तव दरस सकल दुख बीते। मिले आजु मोहि राम पिरीते॥ बार बार बूझी कुसलाता। तो कहुँ देउँ काह सुनु भ्राता॥ ६ ॥

kapi tava darasa sakala dukha bīte। mile āju mohi rāma pirīte॥ bāra bāra būjhī kusalātā। to kahuṁ deūṁ kāha sunu bhrātā॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
O Hanuman, by your sight all my sorrow has ended. In you, I have today met my dear Rama Himself. Bharata repeatedly inquired after his welfare and said, ‘O brother, tell me—what can I give you in return for this blessed message?’
एहि संदेस सरिस जग माहीं। करि बिचार देखेउँ कछु नाहीं॥ नाहिन तात उरिन मैं तोही। अब प्रभु चरित सुनावहु मोही॥ ७ ॥

ehi saṃdesa sarisa jaga māhīṃ। kari bicāra dekheūṃ kachu nāhīṃ॥ nāhina tāta uriṇa maiṃ tohī। aba prabhu carita sunāvahu mohī॥ 7 ॥
Meaning:
I have considered it carefully and found that nothing in the world equals this message. Therefore, dear one, I can never be free of debt to you. Now tell me the Lord’s story.
तब हनुमंत नाइ पद माथा। कहे सकल रघुपति गुन गाथा॥ कहु कपि कबहुँ कृपाल गोसाईं। सुमिरहिं मोहि दास की नाईं॥ ८ ॥

taba hanumanta nāi pada māthā। kahe sakala raghupati guna gāthā॥ kahu kapi kabahuṁ kr̥pāla gosāīṃ। sumirahiṃ mohi dāsa kī nāīṃ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman bowed his head at Bharata’s feet and narrated the whole glory of Shri Raghunath. Bharata asked, ‘Tell me, O Hanuman: does the gracious Lord ever remember me as His servant?’
निज दास ज्यों रघुबंसभूषन कबहुँ मम सुमिरन कर्यो। सुनि भरत बचन बिनीत अति कपि पुलकि तन चरनन्हि पर्यो॥ रघुबीर निज मुख जासु गुन गन कहत अग जग नाथ जो। काहे न होइ बिनीत परम पुनीत सदगुन सिंधु सो॥

nija dāsa jyoṃ raghubansabhūṣana kabahuṁ mama sumirana karyo। suni bharata vacana binīta ati kapi pulaki tana carananhi paryo॥ raghubīra nija mukha jāsu guna gana kahata aga jaga nātha jo। kāhe na hoi binīta parama punīta sadaguna sindhu so॥
Meaning:
Does Shri Ram, the ornament of the Raghu line, ever remember me as His servant? Hearing Bharata’s profoundly humble words, Hanuman became thrilled all over and fell at his feet, thinking: if the Lord of all moving and unmoving beings Himself praises Bharata’s virtues with His own divine mouth, why would Bharata not be supremely humble, perfectly pure, and an ocean of virtues?
राम प्रान प्रिय नाथ तुम्ह सत्य बचन मम तात। पुनि पुनि मिलत भरत सुनि हरष न हृदयँ समात॥ २ (क) ॥

rāma prāna priya nātha tumha satya vacana mama tāta। puni puni milata bharata suni haraṣa na hṛdayaṁ samāta॥ 2 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman said, ‘O Lord, you are dear to Rama as life itself. Dear fatherly one, my words are true.’ Hearing this, Bharata was filled with joy again and again; his heart could not contain its happiness.
भरत चरन सिरु नाइ तुरित गयउ कपि राम पहिं। कही कुसल सब जाइ हरषि चलेउ प्रभु जान चढ़ि॥ २ (ख) ॥

bharata carana siru nāi turita gayau kapi rāma pahiṃ। kahī kusala saba jāi haraṣi caleu prabhu jāna chaṛhi॥ 2 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Then, bowing his head at Bharata’s feet, Hanuman quickly returned to Shri Ram and reported all the good tidings. Thereupon the Lord, delighted, ascended the aerial car and departed.
हरषि भरत कोसलपुर आए। समाचार सब गुरहि सुनाए॥ पुनि मंदिर महँ बात जनाई। आवत नगर कुसल रघुराई॥ १ ॥

haraṣi bharata kosalapura āe। samācāra saba gurahi sunāe॥ puni maṃdira mahaṃ bāta janāī। āvata nagara kusala raghurāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Bharata also came to Kosala-pura in joy and told the guru all the news. Then he informed the palace that Śrī Raghunātha was coming to the city in good health.
सुनत सकल जननीं उठि धाईं। कहि प्रभु कुसल भरत समुझाईं॥ समाचार पुरबासिन्ह पाए। नर अरु नारि हरषि सब धाए॥ २ ॥

sunata sakala jananīṃ uṭhi dhāīṃ। kahi prabhu kusala bharata samujhāīṃ॥ samācāra purabāsinha pāe। nara aru nāri harṣi saba dhāe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as they heard the news, all the mothers sprang up and ran. Bharata explained that the Lord was well. When the townspeople received the news, men and women all rushed out in joy.
दधि दुर्बा रोचन फल फूला। नव तुलसी दल मंगल मूला॥ भरि भरि हेम थार भामिनी। गावत चलिं सिंधुरगामिनी॥ ३ ॥

dadhi durbā rochana phala phūlā। nava tulasī dala maṃgala mūlā॥ bhari bhari hema thāra bhāminī। gāvata caliṃ sindhuragāminī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
For Śrī Rama’s welcome, curd, sacred grass, gorochana, fruits, flowers, and fresh tulsi leaves, the root of all auspiciousness, were filled again and again into golden plates; the noble women, moving like she-elephants, went singing along.
जे जैसेहिं तैसेहिं उठि धावहिं। बाल बृद्ध कहँ संग न लावहिं॥ एक एकन्ह कहँ बूझहिं भाई। तुम्ह देखे दयाल रघुराई॥ ४ ॥

je jaisehiṃ taisehiṃ uṭhi dhāvahiṃ। bāla bṛddha kahaṃ saṃga na lāvahiṃ॥ eka ekanhaṃ kahaṃ būjhahiṃ bhāī। tumha dekhe dayāla raghurāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Whoever they are and wherever they may be, they rise and run just as they are. Fearing delay, they do not bring along children or the old. They ask one another, ‘Brother, have you seen the merciful Raghurai?’
अवधपुरी प्रभु आवत जानी। भई सकल सोभा कै खानी॥ बहइ सुहावन त्रिबिध समीरा। भइ सरजू अति निर्मल नीरा॥ ५ ॥

avadhapurī prabhu āvata jānī। bhaī sakala sobhā kai khānī॥ bahai suhāvana tribidha samīrā। bhaī sarajū ati nirmala nīrā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
When Ayodhya learned that the Lord was coming, it became a mine of all beauty. A pleasant threefold breeze began to blow, and the Sarayu became extremely pure and clear.
हरषित गुर परिजन अनुज भूसुर बृंद समेत। चले भरत मन प्रेम अति सन्मुख कृपानिकेत॥ ३ (क) ॥

haraṣita gura parijana anuja bhūsura bṛnda sameta। cale bharata mana prema ati sanmukha kṛpāniketa॥ 3 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Joyfully, Bharata set out together with Guru Vasiṣṭha, his retinue, his younger brother Śatrughna, and the host of brahmins, his mind full of love and facing the abode of mercy.
बहुतक चढ़ीं अटारिन्ह निरखहिं गगन बिमान। देखि मधुर सुर हरषित करहिं सुमंगल गान॥ ३ (ख) ॥

bahutaka caṛhīṃ aṭārinhaṃ nirakhahiṃ gagana bimāna। dekhi madhura sura haraṣita karahiṃ sumaṃgala gāna॥ 3 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Many women stood on the upper terraces, looking at the aerial car in the sky, and, delighted by what they saw, sang auspicious songs in sweet voices.
राका ससि रघुपति पुर सिंधु देखि हरषान। बढ़्यो कोलाहल करत जनु नारि तरंग समान॥ ३ (ग) ॥

rākā sasi raghupati pura siṃdhu dekhi haraṣāna। baṛhyo kolāhala karata janu nāri taraṃga samāna॥ 3 (c) ॥
Meaning:
Rāma is the moon of the full-moon night, and Ayodhyā is the ocean-city that rejoices at seeing that full moon. The rising uproar and the women seem like its waves.
इहाँ भानुकुल कमल दिवाकर। कपिन्ह देखावत नगर मनोहर॥ सुनु कपीस अंगद लंकेसा। पावन पुरी रुचिर यह देसा॥ १ ॥

ihāṃ bhānukula kamala divākara। kapinhaṃ dekhāvata nagara manohara॥ sunu kapīsa aṃgada laṃkesā। pāvana purī rucira yaha desā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Here Rama, the sun that makes the lotus of the solar dynasty bloom, shows the lovely city to the monkeys. He says: ‘Listen, lord of monkeys, Angada, and lord of Lanka: this city is sacred, and this land is beautiful.’
जद्यपि सब बैकुंठ बखाना। बेद पुरान बिदित जगु जाना॥ अवधपुरी सम प्रिय नहिं सोऊ। यह प्रसंग जानइ कोउ कोऊ॥ २ ॥

jadyapi saba baikuṃṭha bakhānā। bēda purāna bidita jagu jānā॥ avadhapurī sama priya nahiṃ soū। yaha prasaṃga jānai kou kou॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Although Vaikuntha is praised by all—and is well known in the Vedas, the Puranas, and the world—even that is not as dear to me as Ayodhya. Only a few know this distinction.
जन्मभूमि मम पुरी सुहावनि। उत्तर दिसि बह सरजू पावनि॥ जा मज्जन ते बिनहिं प्रयासा। मम समीप नर पावहिं बासा॥ ३ ॥

janmabhūmi mama purī suhāvani। uttara disi baha sarajū pāvani॥ jā majjana te binahiṃ prayāsā। mama samīpa nara pāvahiṃ bāsā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
This charming city is my birthplace. To its north flows the purifying Sarayu; by bathing in it, people attain a dwelling near me without effort.
अति प्रिय मोहि इहाँ के बासी। मम धामदा पुरी सुख रासी॥ हरषे सब कपि सुनि प्रभु बानी। धन्य अवध जो राम बखानी॥ ४ ॥

ati priya mohi ihāṃ ke bāsī। mama dhāmadā purī sukha rāsī॥ haraṣe saba kapi suni prabhu bānī। dhanya avadha jo rāma bakhānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The inhabitants here are exceedingly dear to me. This city is a treasury of joy and the giver of my supreme abode. Hearing the Lord’s words, all the monkeys were delighted and said, ‘Blessed is Ayodhya, which Rama himself has praised.’
आवत देखि लोग सब कृपासिंधु भगवान। नगर निकट प्रभु प्रेरेउ उतरेउ भूमि बिमान॥ ४ (क) ॥

āvata dekhi loga saba kṛpāsiṃdhu bhagavāna। nagara nikaṭa prabhu prēreu utareu bhūmi bimāna॥ 4 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Seeing all the people coming, the merciful Lord Bhagavān Rāma directed the aerial car to descend near the city; then it came down to the earth.
उतरि कहेउ प्रभु पुष्पकहि तुम्ह कुबेर पहिं जाहु। प्रेरित राम चलेउ सो हरषु बिरहु अति ताहु॥ ४ (ख) ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
utari kaheu prabhu puṣpakahi tumha kubera pahiṃ jāhu। prērita rāma caleu so haraṣu birahu ati tāhu॥ 4 (b) ॥
Meaning:
After descending, the Lord told Pushpaka, ‘Go now to Kubera.’ Sent by Rama, it departed; it rejoiced at returning to its master and also felt deep sorrow at being separated from Lord Rama.
