The Flower Garden and the First Glimpse of Sita and Rama
Rama visits the flower garden, where Sita first beholds Him. In that sacred moment, Rama and Sita behold one another and are inwardly drawn together.

सकल सौच करि जाइ नहाए। नित्य निबाहि मुनिहि सिर नाए॥ समय जानि गुर आयसु पाई। लेन प्रसून चले दोउ भाई॥ १ ॥

sakala sauca kari jāi nahāe। nitya nibāhi munihi sira nāe॥ samaya jāni gura āyasu pāī। lena prasūna cale doū bhāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
After completing all purification rites, they bathed and paid obeisance to the sage, having fulfilled their daily duties. Knowing the time and receiving the guru's permission, the two brothers went to gather flowers.
भूप बागु बर देखेउ जाई। जहँ बसंत रितु रही लोभाई॥ लागे बिटप मनोहर नाना। बरन बरन बर बेलि बिताना॥ २ ॥

bhūpa bāgu bara dekheu jāī। jahaṃ basanta ritu rahī lobhāī॥ lāge biṭapa manohara nānā। barana barana bara beli bitānā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
They went and saw the king's beautiful garden, where the spring season seemed to linger in delight. There stood many enchanting trees, and lovely multicolored creepers formed graceful canopies.
नव पल्लव फल सुमन सुहाए। निज संपति सुर रूख लजाए॥ चातक कोकिल कीर चकोरा। कूजत बिहग नटत कल मोरा॥ ३ ॥

nava pallava phala sumana suhāe। nija saṃpati sura rūkha lajāe॥ cātaka kokila kīra cakorā। kūjata biha ga naṭata kala morā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The beautiful trees, laden with fresh leaves, fruits, and flowers, put even the wish-fulfilling trees to shame with their splendor. The cuckoo, partridge, parrot, and chakora birds are calling sweetly, and the peacocks are dancing gracefully.
मध्य बाग सरु सोह सुहावा। मनि सोपान बिचित्र बनावा॥ बिमल सलिलु सरसिज बहुरंगा। जलखग कूजत गुंजत भृंगा॥ ४ ॥

madhya bāga saru soha suhāvā। mani sopāna bicitra banāvā॥ bimala salilu sarasija bahurangā। jalakhaga kūjata guṃjata bhṛṅgā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
In the middle of the garden lies a lovely, enchanting lake, with stairways of jewels made in wondrous designs. Its waters are clear, with many-colored lotuses blooming there, while waterbirds call and bees hum softly.
बागु तड़ागु बिलोकि प्रभु हरषे बंधु समेत। परम रम्य आरामु यहु जो रामहि सुख देत॥ २२७ ॥

bāgu taṛāgu biloki prabhu haraṣe bandhu sameta। parama ramya ārāmu yahu jo rāmahi sukha deta॥ 227 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the garden and the lake, Lord Shri Ramchandra became joyful along with his brother Lakshmana. Truly, this garden is supremely delightful, giving pleasure even to Rama, the giver of happiness to all.
चहुँ दिसि चितइ पूँछि मालीगन। लगे लेन दल फूल मुदित मन॥ तेहि अवसर सीता तहँ आई। गिरिजा पूजन जननि पठाई॥ १ ॥

cahuṃ disi citai pūṃchi mālīgana। lage lena dala phūla mudita mana॥ tehi avasara sītā tahaṃ āī। girijā pūjana janani paṭhāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Looking all around and asking the gardeners, they began to gather leaves and flowers with delighted hearts. At that very moment, Sita arrived there. Her mother had sent her to worship Girija (Parvati).
संग सखीं सब सुभग सयानीं। गावहिं गीत मनोहर बानीं॥ सर समीप गिरिजा गृह सोहा। बरनि न जाइ देखि मनु मोहा॥ २ ॥

saṃga sakhīṃ saba subhaga sayānīṃ। gāvahiṃ gīta manohara bānīṃ॥ sara samīpa girijā gṛha sohā। barani na jāi dekhi manu mohā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Along with her are all the beautiful, mature companions, singing songs in melodious voices. Near the lake stands Girija's shrine, shining so beautifully that it cannot be described; just seeing it enchants the mind.
मज्जनु करि सर सखिन्ह समेता। गई मुदित मन गौरि निकेता॥ पूजा कीन्हि अधिक अनुरागा। निज अनुरूप सुभग बरु मागा॥ ३ ॥

majjanu kari sara sakhinha sametā। gaī mudita mana gauri niketā॥ pūjā kīnhi adhika anurāgā। nija anurūpa subhaga baru māgā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
After bathing in the lake along with her companions, Sita went joyfully to Girija's abode. She worshipped with great devotion and prayed for a handsome husband suited to her.
एक सखी सिय संगु बिहाई। गई रही देखन फुलवाई॥ तेहिं दोउ बंधु बिलोके जाई। प्रेम बिबस सीता पहिं आई॥ ४ ॥

eka sakhī siya saṃgu bihāī। gaī rahī dekhana phulavāī॥ tehiṃ doū bandhu biloke jāī। prema bibasa sītā pahiṃ āī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
One companion had left Sita's side and gone to see the flower garden. There she saw the two brothers, and overwhelmed with love, she came back to Sita.
तासु दसा देखी सखिन्ह पुलक गात जलु नैन। कहु कारनु निज हरष कर पूछहिं सब मृदु बैन॥ २२८ ॥

tāsu dasā dekhī sakhinha pulaka gāta jalu naina। kahu kāranu nija haraṣa kara pūṃchahiṃ saba mṛdu baina॥ 228 ॥
Meaning:
The companions saw her condition: her body was thrilled with emotion and her eyes were filled with tears. Softly, they all began asking her to tell the reason for her joy.
देखन बागु कुअँर दुइ आए। बय किसोर सब भाँति सुहाए॥ स्याम गौर किमि कहौं बखानी। गिरा अनयन नयन बिनु बानी॥ १ ॥

dekhana bāgu kuaṃra dui āe। baya kisora saba bhāṃti suhāe॥ syāma gaura kimi kahauṃ bakhānī। girā anayana nayana binu bānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Two princes have come to see the garden. They are in their youth and are charming in every way. One is dark-hued and the other fair; how can I describe their beauty? Speech is without eyes, and eyes are without speech.
सुनि हरषीं सब सखीं सयानी। सिय हियँ अति उतकंठा जानी॥ एक कहइ नृपसुत तेइ आली। सुने जे मुनि सँग आए काली॥ २ ॥

suni haraṣīṃ saba sakhīṃ sayānī। siya hiyaṃ ati utakaṃṭhā jānī॥ eka kahai nṛpasuta tei ālī। sune je muni saṃga āe kālī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing this and understanding Sita's great eagerness, all the wise companions rejoiced. Then one said, 'O friend, these are the very princes who, it is said, came yesterday with the sage.'
जिन्ह निज रूप मोहनी डारी। कीन्हे स्वबस नगर नर नारी॥ बरनत छबि जहँ तहँ सब लोगू। अवसि देखिअहिं देखन जोगू॥ ३ ॥

jinha nija rūpa mohanī ḍārī। kīnhe svabasa nagara nara nārī॥ baranata chabi jahaṃ tahaṃ saba logū। avasi dekhi'ahiṃ dekhana jogū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
And by casting the spell of their own beauty, they have brought the men and women of the city under their sway. Everywhere people are speaking of their splendor. One must surely go and see them; they are truly worth seeing.
तासु बचन अति सियहि सोहाने। दरस लागि लोचन अकुलाने॥ चली अग्र करि प्रिय सखि सोई। प्रीति पुरातन लखइ न कोई॥ ४ ॥

tāsu bachana ati siyahiṃ sohāne। darasa lāgi locana akulāne॥ calī agra kari priya sakhi soī। prīti purātana lakhai na koī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Her words were extremely pleasing to Sita, and her eyes longed to see them. Taking that dear companion in front, Sita went on. No one can perceive an ancient bond of love.
सुमिरि सीय नारद बचन उपजी प्रीति पुनीत। चकित बिलोकति सकल दिसि जनु सिसु मृगी सभीत॥ २२९ ॥

sumiri sīya nārada bacana upajī prīti punīta। cakita bilokati sakala disi janu sisu mṛgī sabhīta॥ 229 ॥
Meaning:
Remembering Narada's words, a pure love arose in Sita's heart. She looked around in wonder, like a frightened fawn glancing this way and that.
कंकन किंकिनि नूपुर धुनि सुनि। कहत लखन सन रामु हृदयँ गुनि॥ मानहुँ मदन दुंदुभी दीन्ही। मनसा बिस्व बिजय कहँ कीन्ही॥ १ ॥

kaṃkana kiṃkini nūpura dhuni suni। kahata lakhana sana rāmu hṛdayaṃ guni॥ mānahuṃ madana dundubhī dīnhī। manasā bisva bijaya kahaṃ kīnhī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the sound of bangles, ornaments, and anklets, Rama reflected in his heart and said to Lakshmana, 'It is as though Cupid has sounded his drum, resolved to conquer the world.'
अस कहि फिरि चितए तेहि ओरा। सिय मुख ससि भए नयन चकोरा॥ भए बिलोचन चारु अचंचल। मनहुँ सकुचि निमि तजे दिगंचल॥ २ ॥

asa kahi phiri cita'e tehi orā। siya mukha sasi bhae nayana cakorā॥ bhae bilocana cāru acaṃcala। manahuṃ sakuci nimi taje digaṃcala॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Saying this, Shri Rama turned and looked that way. His eyes became chakoras gazing at the moon-like face of Sita. Those beautiful eyes grew still, fixed in a steady gaze. It was as though Nimi, embarrassed, had let go of the eyelids, unwilling to remain there and causing them not to blink.
देखि सीय सोभा सुखु पावा। हृदयँ सराहत बचनु न आवा॥ जनु बिरंचि सब निज निपुनाई। बिरचि बिस्व कहँ प्रगटि देखाई॥ ३ ॥

dekhi sīya sobhā sukhu pāvā। hṛdayaṃ sarāhata bachanu na āvā॥ janu biraṃci saba nija nipunāī। biraci bisva kahaṃ pragaṭi dekhāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Sita's beauty, Shri Rama felt great joy. In his heart he praised it, but no words came from his lips. That beauty was so incomparable, as if Brahma had made all his skill visible and displayed the world before the eyes.
सुंदरता कहुँ सुंदर करई। छबिगृहँ दीपसिखा जनु बरई॥ सब उपमा कबि रहे जुठारी। केहिं पटतरौं बिदेहकुमारी॥ ४ ॥

suṃdaratā kahuṃ suṃdara karī। chabigṛhaṃ dīpasikhā janu barī॥ saba upamā kabi rahe juṭhārī। kehiṃ paṭatarauṃ videhakumārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
That beauty of Sita's is itself beautifying beauty; it seems as though a lamp-flame were burning in the house of beauty. The poets have already left all comparisons stale and exhausted. To what can I compare the daughter of Videha, Sita?
सिय सोभा हियँ बरनि प्रभु आपनि दसा बिचारि। बोले सुचि मन अनुज सन बचन समय अनुहारि॥ २३० ॥

siya sobhā hiyaṃ barani prabhu āpani dasā bicāri। bole suci mana anuja sana bachana samaya anuhāri॥ 230 ॥
Meaning:
Thus, having described Sita's beauty in his heart and reflecting on his own condition, Lord Shri Ramchandra spoke to his younger brother Lakshmana in a pure mind, words suited to the moment.
तात जनकतनया यह सोई। धनुषजग्य जेहि कारन होई॥ पूजन गौरि सखीं लै आईं। करत प्रकासु फिरइ फुलवाईं॥ १ ॥

tāta janakatanayā yaha soī। dhanuṣajagya jehi kārana hoī॥ pūjana gauri sakhīṃ lai āīṃ। karata prakāsu phirai phulavāīṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Father, this is that very daughter of King Janaka, for whom the bow sacrifice is being held. The maidens have brought her for the worship of Gauri. She is moving about, shining in the flower garden.
जासु बिलोकि अलौकिक सोभा। सहज पुनीत मोर मनु छोभा॥ सो सबु कारन जान बिधाता। फरकहिं सुभद अंग सुनु भ्राता॥ २ ॥

jāsu biloki alaukika sobhā। sahaja punīta mora manu chobhā॥ so sabu kārana jāna bidhātā। pharakahiṃ subhada aṅga sunu bhrātā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing whose extraordinary beauty, my naturally pure mind has been stirred. Let the Creator know the cause of it all. But listen, brother: my auspicious limbs are fluttering.
रघुबंसिन्ह कर सहज सुभाऊ। मनु कुपंथ पगु धरइ न काऊ॥ मोहि अतिसय प्रतीति मन केरी। जेहिं सपनेहुँ परनारि न हेरी॥ ३ ॥

raghubansiṃha kar sahaja subhāū। manu kupaṃtha pagu dharai na kāū॥ mohi atisaya pratīti mana kerī। jehiṃ sapanēhuṃ paranāri na herī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
This is the natural, inborn conduct of the descendants of Raghu: their mind never sets foot on the wrong path. I have complete confidence in my own mind, for it has never looked upon another man's wife even in a dream.
जिन्ह कै लहहिं न रिपु रन पीठी। नहिं पावहिं परतिय मनु डीठी॥ मंगन लहहिं न जिन्ह कै नाहीं। ते नरबर थोरे जग माहीं॥ ४ ॥

jinha kai lahahiṃ na ripu rana pīṭhī। nahiṃ pāvahiṃ paratiya manu ḍīṭhī॥ maṃgana lahahiṃ na jinha kai nāhīṃ। te narabara thore jaga māhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Few are those noble men in the world whose backs enemies do not see in battle, whose minds and eyes are not drawn by other men's wives, and from whose homes beggars do not hear the word 'no.'
करत बतकही अनुज सन मन सिय रूप लोभान। मुख सरोज मकरंद छबि करइ मधुप इव पान॥ २३१ ॥

karata batakahī anuja sana mana siya rūpa lobhāna। mukha saroja makaraṃda chabi karai madhupa iva pāna॥ 231 ॥
Meaning:
Thus Shri Rama is speaking with His younger brother, yet His mind, enchanted by Sita's beauty, is drinking the nectar-like splendor of Her lotus-face like a bee.
चितवति चकित चहूँ दिसि सीता। कहँ गए नृपकिसोर मनु चिंता॥ जहँ बिलोक मृग सावक नैनी। जनु तहँ बरिस कमल सित श्रेनी॥ १ ॥

citavati cakita cahūṃ disi sītā। kahaṃ gae nṛpakisora manu ciṃtā॥ jahaṃ biloka mṛga sābaka nainī। janu tahaṃ barisa kamala sita śreṇī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Sita looks around in surprise in all directions, her mind anxious: Where have the prince gone? Wherever the doe-eyed Sita looks, it is as though rows of white lotuses are showered there.
लता ओट तब सखिन्ह लखाए। स्यामल गौर किसोर सुहाए॥ देखि रूप लोचन ललचाने। हरषे जनु निज निधि पहिचाने॥ २ ॥

latā oṭa taba sakhinha lakhāe। syāmala gauri kisora suhāe॥ dekhi rūpa locana lalacāne। harakhe janu nija nidhi pahicāne॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then the maidens showed her the lovely dark and fair youths from behind the creepers. Seeing their beauty, her eyes were drawn to them; she was delighted, as though she had recognized her own treasure.
थके नयन रघुपति छबि देखें। पलकन्हिहूँ परिहरीं निमेषें॥ अधिक सनेहँ देह भै भोरी। सरद ससिहि जनु चितव चकोरी॥ ३ ॥

thake nayana raghupati chabi dekheṃ। palakanhihūṃ pariharīṃ nimeṣeṃ॥ adhika sanehaṃ deha bhai bhorī। sarada sasihi janu citava cakorī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the beauty of Shri Raghunath, her eyes became fixed and weary. Even the eyelids stopped blinking. Owing to intense love, her body was overwhelmed, as though the chakori bird were gazing spellbound at the autumn moon.
लोचन मग रामहि उर आनी। दीन्हे पलक कपाट सयानी॥ जब सिय सखिन्ह प्रेमबस जानी। कहि न सकहिं कछु मन सकुचानी॥ ४ ॥

locana maga rāmahi ura ānī। dīhne palaka kapāṭa sayānī॥ jaba siya sakhinha premabasa jānī। kahi na sakahiṃ kachu mana sakucānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Bringing Shri Rama into her heart through the path of her eyes, the clever Janaki closed the shutters of her eyelids. When the maidens understood that Sita was under the sway of love, they became shy within and could say nothing.
लताभवन तें प्रगट भे तेहि अवसर दोउ भाइ। निकसे जनु जुग बिमल बिधु जलद पटल बिलगाइ॥ २३२ ॥

latābhavana teṃ pragaṭa bhe tehi avasara dou bhāi। nikase janu juga bimala bidhu jalada paṭala bilagāi॥ 232 ॥
Meaning:
At that very moment both brothers appeared from the bower, as though two spotless moons had emerged by parting the curtain of clouds.
सोभा सीवँ सुभग दोउ बीरा। नील पीत जलजाभ सरीरा॥ मोरपंख सिर सोहत नीके। गुच्छ बीच बिच कुसुम कली के॥ १ ॥

sobhā sīvaṃ subhaga dou bīrā। nīla pīta jalajābha sarīrā॥ mora-pakhaṃ sira sohata nīke। guchcha bīca bica kusuma kalī ke॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The two handsome brothers are the very limit of splendor. Their bodies shine like blue and yellow lotuses. Lovely peacock feathers adorn their heads, and clusters of flower buds are set between them.
भाल तिलक श्रमबिंदु सुहाए। श्रवन सुभग भूषन छबि छाए॥ बिकट भृकुटि कच घूघरवारे। नव सरोज लोचन रतनारे॥ २ ॥

bhāla tilaka śramabindu suhāe। śravana subhaga bhūṣana chabi chāe॥ bikaṭa bhṛkuṭi kaca ghūgharavāre। nava saroja locana ratanāre॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
A tilak and drops of perspiration adorn the forehead. The ears are filled with the beauty of lovely ornaments. Their brows are arched and their hair is curly. Their eyes are reddish, like fresh lotus flowers.
चारु चिबुक नासिका कपोला। हास बिलास लेत मनु मोला॥ मुखछबि कहि न जाइ मोहि पाहीं। जो बिलोकि बहु काम लजाहीं॥ ३ ॥

cāru cibuka nāsikā kapolā। hāsa bilāsa leta manu molā॥ mukha-chabi kahi na jāi mohi pāhīṃ। jo biloki bahu kāma lajhāhīṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Their chin, nose, and cheeks are exceedingly beautiful, and the grace of their smile captivates the heart. Their facial beauty cannot be described by me; seeing it, many a Cupid would be put to shame.
उर मनि माल कंबु कल गीवा। काम कलभ कर भुज बलसींवा॥ सुमन समेत बाम कर दोना। सावँर कुअँर सखी सुठि लोना॥ ४ ॥

ura mani māla kaṃbu kala gīvā। kāma kalabha kara bhuja balasīṃvā॥ sumana sameta bāma kara dōnā। sāvaṃra kuaṃra sakhī suṭhi lonā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
A garland of jewels rests on the chest. The neck is beautiful like a conch shell. The arms are soft and graceful, like the trunk of Cupid's elephant-calf, and are the very limit of strength. With a little bowl in His left hand filled with flowers, O friend, that dark-complexioned prince is truly most lovely.
केहरि कटि पट पीत धर सुषमा सील निधान। देखि भानुकुलभूषनहि बिसरा सखिन्ह अपान॥ २३३ ॥

kehari kaṭi paṭa pīta dhara suṣamā sīla nidhāna। dekhi bhānukulabhūṣanahi bisarā sakhinha apāna॥ 233 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Shri Ramachandra, whose waist was lion-like, who wore a yellow garment, and who was a treasury of grace and virtue, the maidens forgot themselves.
धरि धीरजु एक आलि सयानी। सीता सन बोली गहि पानी॥ बहुरि गौरि कर ध्यान करेहू। भूपकिसोर देखि किन लेहू॥ १ ॥

dhari dhīraju eka āli sayānī। sītā sana bolī gahi pānī॥ bahuri gauri kara dhyāna karehū। bhūpakisora dekhi kina lehū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
One clever maid, gathering her composure, took Sita's hand and said: 'You can remember Girija again later; why not look at the prince now?'
सकुचि सीयँ तब नयन उघारे। सनमुख दोउ रघुसिंघ निहारे॥ नख सिख देखि राम कै सोभा। सुमिरि पिता पनु मनु अति छोभा॥ २ ॥

sakuci sīyaṃ taba nayana ughāre। sanamukha dou raghusiṃgha nihāre॥ nakha sikha dekhi rāma kai sobhā। sumiri pitā panu manu ati chobhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then Sita, shyly opening her eyes, saw the two lions of Raghu's line standing before her. Seeing Shri Rama's beauty from head to toe, and then remembering her father's vow, her mind was deeply troubled.
परबस सखिन्ह लखी जब सीता। भयउ गहरु सब कहहिं सभीता॥ पुनि आउब एहि बेरिआँ काली। अस कहि मन बिहसी एक आली॥ ३ ॥

parabasa sakhinha lakhī jaba sītā। bhayau gaharu saba kahahiṃ sabhītā॥ puni āuba ehi beriāṃ kālī। asa kahi mana bihasī eka ālī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
When the maidens saw Sita under the sway of love, they all became alarmed and said, 'It has become too late; now we should go.' Saying, 'We will come again at this same time tomorrow,' one maid smiled inwardly.
गूढ़ गिरा सुनि सिय सकुचानी। भयउ बिलंबु मातु भय मानी॥ धरि बड़ि धीर रामु उर आने। फिरी अपनपउ पितुबस जाने॥ ४ ॥

gūḍha girā suni siya sakucānī। bhayau bilambu mātu bhaya mānī॥ dhari baṛi dhīra rāmu ura āne। phirī apanapau pitubasa jāne॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the maid's mysterious words, Sita became shy. Thinking it had grown late, she became afraid of her mother. Gathering great patience, she brought Shri Ram into her heart and, feeling herself bound by her father's will, turned back.
देखन मिस मृग बिहग तरु फिरइ बहोरि बहोरि। निरखि निरखि रघुबीर छबि बाढ़इ प्रीति न थोरि॥ २३४ ॥

dekhana misa mṛga bihaga taru phirai bahori bahori। nirakhi nirakhi raghubīra chabi bāḍhai prīti na thori॥ 234 ॥
