Manu and Shatarupa's Penance and Boon
Manu and Shatarupa perform severe penance and pray that the Lord be born as their son. Pleased with their devotion, the Lord grants them the boon.

स्वायंभू मनु अरु सतरूपा। जिन्ह तें भै नरसृष्टि अनूपा॥ दंपति धरम आचरन नीका। अजहुँ गाव श्रुति जिन्ह कै लीका॥ १ ॥

svāyaṃbhū manu aru satarūpā। jinha teṃ bhai narasṛṣṭi anūpā॥ daṃpati dharama ācaraṇa nīkā। ajahuṃ gāva śruti jinha kai līkā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Svayambhuva Manu and Satarupa were the source of this incomparable human creation. The conduct and righteousness of that husband and wife were excellent; even today, the Vedas sing of their path and conduct.
नृप उत्तानपाद सुत तासू। ध्रुव हरिभगत भयउ सुत जासू॥ लघु सुत नाम प्रियब्रत ताही। बेद पुरान प्रसंसहिं जाही॥ २ ॥

nṛpa uttānapāda suta tāsū। dhruva haribhagata bhayau suta jāsū॥ laghu suta nāma priyabrata tāhī। beda purāna prasansahiṃ jāhī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
King Uttanapada was his son, and his son was the famous devotee Dhruva. His younger son was named Priyavrat, whom the Vedas and Puranas praise.
देवहूति पुनि तासु कुमारी। जो मुनि कर्दम कै प्रिय नारी॥ आदिदेव प्रभु दीनदयाला। जठर धरेउ जेहिं कपिल कृपाला॥ ३ ॥

devahūti puni tāsu kumārī। jo muni kardama kai priya nārī॥ ādideva prabhu dīnadayālā। jaṭhara dhareu jehiṃ kapila kṛpālā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then Devahuti was his daughter, who became the beloved wife of Sage Kardama and who bore in her womb the primordial Lord Kapila, compassionate to the helpless.
सांख्य सास्त्र जिन्ह प्रगट बखाना। तत्त्व बिचार निपुन भगवाना॥ तेहिं मनु राज कीन्ह बहु काला। प्रभु आयसु सब बिधि प्रतिपाला॥ ४ ॥

sāṅkhya sāstra jinha pragaṭa bakhānā। tattva bicāra nipuna bhagavānā॥ tehiṃ manu rāja kīnha bahu kālā। prabhu āyasu saba bidhi pratipālā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord Kapila, supremely skilled in discerning reality, openly expounded the Sankhya scriptures. Manu ruled for a long time and observed the Lord’s command in every way.
होइ न बिषय बिराग भवन बसत भा चौथपन। हृदयँ बहुत दुख लाग जनम गयउ हरिभगति बिनु॥ १४२ ॥

hoi na biṣaya birāga bhavana basata bhā cauthapana। hṛdayaṃ bahuta dukha lāga janama gayau haribhagati bina॥ 142 ॥
Meaning:
Old age came while he was still living at home, yet detachment from worldly pleasures did not arise. Reflecting on this, his heart felt deep sorrow that life had passed without devotion to Hari.
बरबस राज सुतहि तब दीन्हा। नारि समेत गवन बन कीन्हा॥ तीरथ बर नैमिष बिख्याता। अति पुनीत साधक सिधि दाता॥ १ ॥

barabasa rāja sutahi taba dīnhā। nāri sameta gavana bana kīnha॥ tīratha bara naimiṣa bikhyātā। ati punīta sādhaka sidhi dātā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Then Manu forcibly entrusted the kingdom to his son and, together with his wife, departed to the forest. Among holy places, Naimisha is renowned as the best, supremely pure, and a giver of spiritual accomplishment to seekers.
बसहिं तहाँ मुनि सिद्ध समाजा। तहँ हियँ हरषि चलेउ मनु राजा॥ पंथ जात सोहहिं मतिधीरा। ग्यान भगति जनु धरें सरीरा॥ २ ॥

basahiṃ tahāṃ muni siddha samājā। tahaṃ hiyaṃ haraṣi caleu manu rājā॥ pantha jāta sohahiṃ matidhīrā। gyāna bhagati janu dhareṃ sarīrā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
There the communities of sages and perfected beings dwell. King Manu went there with joy in his heart. The steadfast pair shone on the road as though knowledge and devotion themselves had taken visible form.
पहुँचे जाइ धेनुमति तीरा। हरषि नहाने निरमल नीरा॥ आए मिलन सिद्ध मुनि ग्यानी। धरम धुरंधर नृपरिषि जानी॥ ३ ॥

pahuṃce jāi dhenumati tīrā। haraṣi nahāne niramala nīrā॥ āe milana siddha muni gyānī। dharama dhuraṃdhara nṛpariṣi jānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
They reached the bank of the Gomati. Joyfully, they bathed in its pure waters. Recognizing him as a bearer of dharma and a royal sage, perfected beings and learned sages came to meet him.
जहँ जहँ तीरथ रहे सुहाए। मुनिन्ह सकल सादर करवाए॥ कृस सरीर मुनिपट परिधाना। सत समाज नित सुनहिं पुराना॥ ४ ॥

jahaṃ jahaṃ tīratha rahe suhāe। muninha sakala sādara karavāe॥ kṛsa sarīra munipaṭa paridhānā। sata samāja nita sunahiṃ purānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Wherever there were lovely holy places, the sages respectfully brought them to him. His body became lean, he wore garments like those of ascetics, and he regularly listened to the Puranas in the company of saints.
द्वादस अच्छर मंत्र पुनि जपहिं सहित अनुराग। बासुदेव पद पंकरुह दंपति मन अति लाग॥ १४३ ॥

dvādasa acchara mantra puni japahiṃ sahita anurāga। bāsudeva pada paṃkaruha daṃpati mana ati lāga॥ 143 ॥
Meaning:
And they repeatedly chanted the twelve-syllabled mantra with deep love. The minds of that royal couple became greatly attached to the lotus feet of Lord Vasudeva.
करहिं अहार साक फल कंदा। सुमिरहिं ब्रह्म सच्चिदानंदा॥ पुनि हरि हेतु करन तप लागे। बारि अधार मूल फल त्यागे॥ १ ॥

karahiṃ ahāra sāka phala kandā। sumirahiṃ brahma saccidānandā॥ puni hari hetu karana tapa lāge। bāri adhāra mūla phala tyāge॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
They ate leaves, fruits, and roots, and remembered Brahman, who is existence, consciousness, and bliss. Then, for the sake of Hari, they undertook austerity and gave up roots and fruits, subsisting only on water.
उर अभिलाष निरंतर होई। देखिअ नयन परम प्रभु सोई॥ अगुन अखंड अनंत अनादी। जेहि चिंतहिं परमारथबादी॥ २ ॥

ura abhilāṣa nirantara hoī। dekhia nayana parama prabhu soī॥ aguna akhaṇḍa ananta anādī। jehi ciṃtahiṃ paramārathabādī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Their heart was continually filled with this longing: how might they behold with their eyes that supreme Lord, who is attributeless, indivisible, endless, and beginningless, and whom seekers of the highest truth meditate upon?
नेति नेति जेहि बेद निरूपा। निजानंद निरुपाधि अनूपा॥ संभु बिरंचि बिष्नु भगवाना। उपजहिं जासु अंस तें नाना॥ ३ ॥

neti neti jehi beda nirūpā। nijānanda nirupādhi anūpā॥ saṃbhu birañci biṣṇu bhagavānā। upajahiṃ jāsu aṃsa teṃ nānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
He whom the Vedas describe by saying, 'not this, not this'; who is of the nature of bliss, free from limiting adjuncts, and incomparable; from whose portion many forms of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu arise.
ऐसेउ प्रभु सेवक बस अहई। भगत हेतु लीलातनु गहई॥ जौं यह बचन सत्य श्रुति भाषा। तौ हमार पूजिहि अभिलाषा॥ ४ ॥

aiseu prabhu sevaka basa ahī। bhagata hetu līlātanu gahī॥ jaũ yaha bacana satya śruti bhāṣā। tau hamāra pūjihi abhilāṣā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Even such a great Lord comes under the sway of His devotee and assumes a divine body for the sake of devotees. If this statement of the Vedas is true, then our desire will certainly be fulfilled.
एहि बिधि बीते बरष षट सहस बारि आहार। संबत सप्त सहस्र पुनि रहे समीर अधार॥ १४४ ॥

ehi bidhi bīte baraṣa ṣaṭa sahasa bāri āhāra। saṃbata sapta sahasra puni rahe samīra adhāra॥ 144 ॥
Meaning:
In this way, six thousand years passed while they lived on water. Then they remained for seven thousand years supported by air alone.
बरष सहस दस त्यागेउ सोऊ। ठाढ़े रहे एक पद दोऊ॥ बिधि हरि हर तप देखि अपारा। मनु समीप आए बहु बारा॥ १ ॥

baraṣa sahasa dasa tyāgeu soū। ṭhāṛhe rahe eka pada doū॥ bidhi hari har tapa dekhi apārā। manu samīpa āe bahu bārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
For ten thousand years they renounced even the support of air. Both remained standing on one leg. Seeing their boundless austerity, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva came many times near Manu.
मागहु बर बहु भाँति लोभाए। परम धीर नहिं चलहिं चलाए॥ अस्थिमात्र होइ रहे सरीरा। तदपि मनाग मनहिं नहिं पीरा॥ २ ॥

māgahu bara bahu bhāṃti lobhāe। parama dhīra nahiṃ calahiṃ calāe॥ asthimātra hoi rahe sarīrā। tadapi manāga manahiṃ nahiṃ pīrā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
He tried to tempt them in many ways and told them to ask for a boon. But they remained supremely steadfast; they did not waver even when urged. Although their bodies were reduced to nothing but bones, their minds felt no pain at all.
प्रभु सर्बग्य दास निज जानी। गति अनन्य तापस नृप रानी॥ मागु मागु बरु भै नभ बानी। परम गभीर कृपामृत सानी॥ ३ ॥

prabhu sarbagya dāsa nija jānī। gati ananya tāpasa nṛpa rānī॥ māgu māgu baru bhai nabha bānī। parama gabhīra kṛpāmṛta sānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The all-knowing Lord recognized the ascetic king and queen, who had no other refuge, as His own servants. Then a profoundly solemn voice from the sky, steeped in the nectar of grace, said, “Ask, ask for a boon.”
मृतक जिआवनि गिरा सुहाई। श्रवन रंध्र होइ उर जब आई॥ हृष्ट पुष्ट तन भए सुहाए। मानहुँ अबहिं भवन ते आए॥ ४ ॥

mṛtaka jiāvani girā suhāī। śravana randhra hoi ura jaba āī॥ hṛṣṭa puṣṭa tana bhae suhāe। mānahuṃ abahiṃ bhavana te āe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
This lovely speech, capable even of bringing the dead to life, entered through the openings of the ears and reached the heart; then the king and queen’s bodies became so lovely and full of vigor that it seemed as if they had just come from home.
श्रवन सुधा सम बचन सुनि पुलक प्रफुल्लित गात। बोले मनु करि दंडवत प्रेम न हृदयँ समात॥ १४५ ॥

śravana sudhā sama bacana suni pulaka praphullita gāta। bole manu kari daṇḍavata prema na hṛdayaṃ samāta॥ 145 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing words that seemed like nectar to the ears, their bodies thrilled with delight and blossomed with joy. Then Manu bowed down in prostration and said, “My heart could not contain my love.”
सुनु सेवक सुरतरु सुरधेनू। बिधि हरि हर बंदित पद रेनू॥ सेवत सुलभ सकल सुखदायक। प्रनतपाल सचराचर नायक॥ १ ॥

sunu sevaka surataru suradhenū। bidhi hari har baṃdita pada reṇū॥ sevata sulabha sakala sukhadāyaka। pranatapāla sacarācara nāyaka॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, listen: for Your servants You are the wish-fulfilling tree and the cow of plenty. Even Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva adore the dust of Your feet. You are easy to attain through devotion and the giver of all happiness. You are the protector of the surrendered and the lord of all moving and unmoving beings.
जौं अनाथ हित हम पर नेहू। तौ प्रसन्न होइ यह बर देहू॥ जो सरूप बस सिव मन माहीं। जेहिं कारन मुनि जतन कराहीं॥ २ ॥

jauṃ anātha hita hama para nehū। tau prasanna hoi yaha bara dehū॥ jo sarūpa basa siva mana māhīṃ। jehiṃ kārana muni yatana karāhīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
O Benefactor of the helpless! If You have affection for us, then be pleased and grant this boon: that form which dwells in Shiva’s mind and for which the sages make such effort.
जो भुसुंडि मन मानस हंसा। सगुन अगुन जेहि निगम प्रसंसा॥ देखहिं हम सो रूप भरि लोचन। कृपा करहु प्रनतारति मोचन॥ ३ ॥

jo bhusuṇḍi mana mānasa haṃsā। saguṇa aguṇa jehi nigama prasaṃsā॥ dekhahiṃ hama so rūpa bhari locana। kṛpā karahu pranatārati mocana॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
That swan which dwells in the Manasarovar-like mind of Kakabhushundi, and which the Vedas praise as both with attributes and beyond attributes—O Lord who remove the sorrows of the surrendered, be so gracious that we may behold that form with our eyes filled.
दंपति बचन परम प्रिय लागे। मृदुल बिनीत प्रेम रस पागे॥ भगत बछल प्रभु कृपानिधाना। बिस्वबास प्रगटे भगवाना॥ ४ ॥

daṃpati bacana parama priya lāge। mṛdula binīta prema rasa pāge॥ bhagata bachala prabhu kṛpānidhānā। bisvabāsa pragaṭe bhagavānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The king and queen’s soft, humble words steeped in the nectar of love were extremely dear to the Lord. The compassionate Lord, affectionate to devotees and the abode of the universe, manifested Himself.
नील सरोरुह नील मनि नील नीरधर स्याम। लाजहिं तन सोभा निरखि कोटि कोटि सत काम॥ १४६ ॥

nīla saroruha nīla mani nīla nīradhara syāma। lājahiṃ tana sobhā nirakhi koṭi koṭi sata kāma॥ 146 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the beauty of the Lord’s blue lotus, sapphire, and blue-cloud-like dark body—soft, radiant, and full of life—crores upon crores of Cupids would feel ashamed.
सरद मयंक बदन छबि सींवा। चारु कपोल चिबुक दर ग्रीवा॥ अधर अरुन रद सुंदर नासा। बिधु कर निकर बिनिंदक हासा॥ १ ॥

sarada mayaṃka badana chabi sīṃvā। cāru kapola cibuka dara grīvā॥ adhara aruna rada sundara nāsā। bidhu kara nikara binindaka hāsā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Their face was like the moon of the autumn full moon, the very limit of beauty. Their cheeks, chin, and neck were charming; their red lips, teeth, and nose were exceedingly lovely. Their smile put even the moon’s rays to shame.
नव अंबुज अंबक छबि नीकी। चितवनि ललित भावँती जी की॥ भृकुटि मनोज चाप छबि हारी। तिलक ललाट पटल दुतिकारी॥ २ ॥

nava aṃbuja aṃbaka chabi nīkī। citavani lalita bhāvaṃtī jī kī॥ bhṛkuṭi manoja cāpa chabi hārī। tilaka lalāṭa paṭala dutikārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The beauty of the eyes was like fresh lotuses. The lovely glance was very dear. The arched brows robbed Cupid’s bow of its splendor. A radiant tilak adorned the forehead.
कुंडल मकर मुकुट सिर भ्राजा। कुटिल केस जनु मधुप समाजा॥ उर श्रीबत्स रुचिर बनमाला। पदिक हार भूषन मनिजाला॥ ३ ॥

kuṃḍala makara mukuṭa sira bhrājā। kuṭila kesa janu madhupa samājā॥ ura śrībatsa rucira banamālā। padika hāra bhūṣana manijālā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Makara-shaped earrings and a crown shone upon the head. The curly hair was so dense that it seemed like a swarm of bees. On the chest were the Shrivatsa mark, a lovely वनमाला, a gem-studded necklace, and ornaments of jewels.
केहरि कंधर चारु जनेऊ। बाहु बिभूषन सुंदर तेऊ॥ करि कर सरिस सुभग भुजदंडा। कटि निषंग कर सर कोदंडा॥ ४ ॥

kehari kaṃdhara cāru janeū। bāhu bibhūṣana sundara teū॥ kari kara sarisa subhaga bhujadaṃḍā। kaṭi niṣaṃga kara sara kodaṃḍā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
His neck was like that of a lion, and the sacred thread was beautiful. The ornaments on His arms were lovely too. His mighty arms were graceful like an elephant’s trunk. A quiver was at His waist, and arrow and bow shone in His hands.
तड़ित बिनिंदक पीत पट उदर रेख बर तीनि। नाभि मनोहर लेति जनु जमुन भवँर छबि छीनि॥ १४७ ॥

taṛita binindaka pīta paṭa udara rekha bara tīni। nābhi manohara leti janu jamuna bhavaṃra chabi chīnī॥ 147 ॥
Meaning:
The yellow garment was so splendid that it put lightning to shame. Three lovely lines adorned the belly. The navel was so enchanting that it seemed to steal the beauty of the whirlpools of the Yamuna.
पद राजीव बरनि नहिं जाहीं। मुनि मन मधुप बसहिं जेन्ह माहीं॥ बाम भाग सोभति अनुकूला। आदिसक्ति छबिनिधि जगमूला॥ १ ॥

pada rājīva barani nahiṃ jāhīṃ। muni mana madhupa basahiṃ jenha māhīṃ॥ bāma bhāga sobhati anukūlā। ādisakti chabinidhi jagamūlā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord’s lotus feet, in which the bees of sages’ minds dwell, cannot be described. On His left side shines the ever-auspicious, treasure of beauty, primal divine शक्ति, Shri Janaki.
जासु अंस उपजहिं गुनखानी। अगनित लच्छि उमा ब्रह्मानी॥ भृकुटि बिलास जासु जग होई। राम बाम दिसि सीता सोई॥ २ ॥

jāsu aṃsa upajahiṃ gunakhānī। aganita lacchi umā brahmānī॥ bhṛkuṭi bilāsa jāsu jaga hoī। rāma bāma disi sītā soī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
From whose partial manifestations arise countless Lakshmis, Uma, and Brahmani, and by whose mere movement of the brow the world comes to be—she, the Lord’s own power, Shri Sita, stands on Rama’s left.
छबिसमुद्र हरि रूप बिलोकी। एकटक रहे नयन पट रोकी॥ चितवहिं सादर रूप अनूपा। तृप्ति न मानहिं मनु सतरूपा॥ ३ ॥

chabisamudra hari rūpa bilokī। ekaṭaka rahe nayana paṭa rokī॥ citavahiṃ sādara rūpa anūpā। tṛpti na mānahim manu satarūpā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the ocean of beauty that was Lord Hari’s form, Manu and Shatarupa remained fixed in a single gaze, their eyelids held still. They looked respectfully upon that incomparable form and could never feel satiated.
हरष बिबस तन दसा भुलानी। परे दंड इव गहि पद पानी॥ सिर परसे प्रभु निज कर कंजा। तुरत उठाए करुनापुंजा॥ ४ ॥

haraṣa bibasa tana dasā bhulānī। pare daṃḍa iva gahi pada pānī॥ sira parase prabhu nija kara kaṃjā। turata uṭhāe karunāpuṃjā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Overcome by joy, they forgot the condition of their bodies. Holding the Lord’s feet with their hands, they fell to the ground like a staff. The Lord, an ocean of compassion, touched their heads with His lotus hands and raised them up at once.
बोले कृपानिधान पुनि अति प्रसन्न मोहि जानि। मागहु बर जोइ भाव मन महादानि अनुमानि॥ १४८ ॥

bole kṛpānidhāna puni ati prasanna mohi jāni। māgahu bara joi bhāva mana mahādāni anumāni॥ 148 ॥
Meaning:
Then the treasure of compassion, the Lord, said again: “Knowing Me to be greatly pleased, and taking Me as a most generous giver, ask for whatever your heart desires.”
सुनि प्रभु बचन जोरि जुग पानी। धरि धीरजु बोली मृदु बानी॥ नाथ देखि पद कमल तुम्हारे। अब पूरे सब काम हमारे॥ १ ॥

suni prabhu bacana jori juga pānī। dhari dhīraju bolī mṛdu bānī॥ nātha dekhi pada kamala tumhāre। aba pūre saba kāma hamāre॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the Lord’s words, Manu folded his hands and, with composure, spoke gently: “O Lord, seeing Your lotus feet, all our desires are now fulfilled.”
एक लालसा बड़ि उर माहीं। सुगम अगम कहि जाति सो नाहीं॥ तुम्हहि देत अति सुगम गोसाईं। अगम लाग मोहि निज कृपनाईं॥ २ ॥

eka lālasā baṛi ura māhīṃ। sugama agam kahi jāti so nāhīṃ॥ tumhahi deta ati sugama gosāīṃ। agama lāga mohi nija kṛpanāīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Still, there is one great longing in my heart. It is both easy and difficult to speak of, so I cannot say it. O Lord, it would be very easy for You to grant it, but because of my own unworthiness it seems exceedingly difficult to me.
जथा दरिद्र बिबुधतरु पाई। बहु संपति मागत सकुचाई॥ तासु प्रभाउ जान नहिं सोई। तथा हृदयँ मम संसय होई॥ ३ ॥

jathā daridra bibudharu pāī। bahu saṃpati māgata sakucāī॥ tāsu prabhāu jāna nahiṃ soī। tathā hṛdayaṃ mama saṃsaya hoī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Just as a poor man, even after receiving the wish-fulfilling tree, hesitates to ask for great wealth because he does not know its power, so a doubt arises in my heart.
सो तुम्ह जानहु अंतरजामी। पुरवहु मोर मनोरथ स्वामी॥ सकुच बिहाइ मागु नृप मोही। मोरें नहिं अदेय कछु तोही॥ ४ ॥

so tumha jānahu aṃtarajāmī। puravahu mora manoratha svāmī॥ sakuca bihāi māgu nṛpa mohī। moreṃ nahiṃ adeya kachu tohī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, You are the indweller of all hearts, so You already know it. Please fulfill this wish of mine. [The Lord said:] O King, set aside your hesitation and ask of Me. There is nothing I possess that cannot be given to you.
दानि सिरोमनि कृपानिधि नाथ कहउँ सतिभाउ। चाहउँ तुम्हहि समान सुत प्रभु सन कवन दुराउ॥ १४९ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
dāni siromani kṛpānidhi nātha kahauṃ satibhāu। cāhauṃ tumhahi samāna suta prabhu sana kavana durāu॥ 149 ॥
Meaning:
[The king said:] O crest-jewel among the generous, O treasure of compassion, O Lord, I speak my heart truthfully: I desire a son equal to You. What can ever be hidden from the Lord?
देखि प्रीति सुनि बचन अमोले। एवमस्तु करुनानिधि बोले॥ आपु सरिस खोजौं कहँ जाई। नृप तव तनय होब मैं आई॥ १ ॥

dekhi prīti suni bacana amole। evamastu karunānidhi bole॥ āpu sarisa khojauṃ kahã jāī। nṛpa tava tanaya hoba maiṃ āī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing their affection and hearing those priceless words, the Ocean of Mercy, the Lord, said, “So be it. O king, where could I go to find another like Myself? Therefore I shall come of My own will and become your son.”
सतरूपहि बिलोकि कर जोरें। देबि मागु बरु जो रुचि तोरें॥ जो बरु नाथ चतुर नृप मागा। सोइ कृपाल मोहि अति प्रिय लागा॥ २ ॥

satarūpahi biloki kara joreṃ। debi māgu baru jo ruci toreṃ॥ jo baru nātha catura nṛpa māgā। soi kṛpāla mohi ati priya lāgā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Shatarupa with hands joined, the Lord said, “O Devi, ask for whatever boon pleases you.” [Shatarupa said:] “O Lord, the boon that the wise king asked for is very dear to me, O merciful One.”
प्रभु परंतु सुठि होति ढिठाई। जदपि भगत हित तुम्हहि सोहाई॥ तुम्ह ब्रह्मादि जनक जग स्वामी। ब्रह्म सकल उर अंतरजामी॥ ३ ॥

prabhu paraṃtu suṭhi hoti ḍhiṭhāī। jadapi bhagat hita tumhahi sohāī॥ tumha brahmādi janaka jaga svāmī। brahma sakala ura antarajāmī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, there is indeed much boldness in this, though such boldness is pleasing to You for the sake of devotees. You are the father of Brahma and the other gods, the lord of the universe, and the indwelling knower of all hearts.
अस समुझत मन संसय होई। कहा जो प्रभु प्रवान पुनि सोई॥ जे निज भगत नाथ तव अहहीं। जो सुख पावहिं जो गति लहहीं॥ ४ ॥

soi sukha soi gati soi bhagati soi nija carana sanehu। soi bibeka soi rahani prabhu hamahi kṛpā kari dehu॥ 150 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, grant us that very bliss, that very destiny, that very devotion, that love for Your own feet, that very discernment, and that very way of life, by Your grace.
सुनि मृदु गूढ़ रुचिर बर रचना। कृपासिंधु बोले मृदु बचना॥ जो कछु रुचि तुम्हरे मन माहीं। मैं सो दीन्ह सब संसय नाहीं॥ १ ॥

suni mṛdu gūḍha rucira bara racanā। kṛpāsindhu bole mṛdu bacanā॥ jo kachu ruci tumhare mana māhīṃ। maiṃ so dīnha saba saṃsaya nāhīṃ॥ 1 ॥

Hearing that tender, profound, and beautiful speech, the Ocean of Mercy spoke gently: “Whatever desire is in your mind, I have granted it all; have no doubt about it.”
मातु बिबेक अलौकिक तोरें। कबहुँ न मिटिहि अनुग्रह मोरें॥ बंदि चरन मनु कहेउ बहोरी। अवर एक बिनती प्रभु मोरी॥ २ ॥

mātu bibeka alaukika toreṃ। kabahũ na miṭihi anugraha moreṃ॥ bandi carana manu kaheu bahorī। avara eka binatee prabhu morī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
“O Mother, by My grace your wondrous discernment will never fade.” Then Manu bowed at His feet and said again, “O Lord, I have one more request.”
सुत बिषइक तव पद रति होऊ। मोहि बड़ मूढ़ कहै किन कोऊ॥ मनि बिनु फनि जिमि जल बिनु मीना। मम जीवन तिमि तुम्हहि अधीना॥ ३ ॥

suta biṣaika tava pada rati hoū। mohi baṛa mūṛha kahai kina kou॥ mani binu phani jimi jala binu mīnā। mama jīvana timi tumhahiṃ adhīnā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
May my love for Your feet be like a son's love for his father, even if someone calls me a great fool for it. Just as a snake cannot live without its jewel and a fish without water, so may my life remain dependent on You.
अस बरु मागि चरन गहि रहेऊ। एवमस्तु करुनानिधि कहेऊ॥ अब तुम्ह मम अनुसासन मानी। बसहु जाइ सुरपति रजधानी॥ ४ ॥

asa baru māgi carana gahi raheu। evamastu karuṇānidhi kaheu॥ aba tumha mama anusaasana mānī। basahu jāi surapati rajādhānī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Asking for such a boon, he held the Lord's feet and remained there. Then the Ocean of Mercy said, “So be it. Now, obeying My command, go and dwell in the capital of the lord of the gods.”
तहँ करि भोग बिसाल तात गएँ कछु काल पुनि। होइहहु अवध भुआल तब मैं होब तुम्हार सुत॥ १५१ ॥

tahã kari bhoga bisāla tāta gaeṃ kachu kāla puni। hoihahu avadha bhuāla taba maiṃ hoba tumhāra suta॥ 151 ॥
Meaning:
Having enjoyed there abundant pleasures for some time, O dear one, after some time you will become the king of Ayodhya. Then I shall become your son.
इच्छामय नरबेष सँवारें। होइहउँ प्रगट निकेत तुम्हारें॥ अंसन्ह सहित देह धरि ताता। करिहउँ चरित भगत सुखदाता॥ १ ॥

icchāmaya narabeṣa saṃvāreṃ। hoihauṃ pragaṭa niketa tumhāreṃ॥ aṃsanhaṃ sahita deha dhari tātā। karihauṃ carita bhagata sukhadātā॥ 1 ॥

Disguising Myself in the desired form of a human body, I shall manifest in your home. O dear one, taking body along with My own parts, I shall perform deeds that give joy to devotees.
जे सुनि सादर नर बड़भागी। भव तरिहहिं ममता मद त्यागी॥ आदिसक्ति जेहिं जग उपजाया। सोउ अवतरिहि मोरि यह माया॥ २ ॥

je suni sādara nara baṛabhāgī। bhava tariahĩ mamatā mada tyāgī॥ ādiśakti jehiṃ jaga upajāyā। sou avatarihi mori yaha māyā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Those deeds, hearing which noble men of great good fortune will cross over the ocean of worldly existence, abandoning attachment and pride—this My primordial power, which gave rise to the world, will also descend.
पुरउब मैं अभिलाष तुम्हारा। सत्य सत्य पन सत्य हमारा॥ पुनि पुनि अस कहि कृपानिधाना। अंतरधान भए भगवाना॥ ३ ॥

purauba maiṃ abhilāṣa tumhārā। satya satya pana satya hamārā॥ puni puni asa kahi kṛpānidhānā। antaradhāna bhae bhagavānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Thus I shall fulfill your desire. My vow is true, true, true.” The Ocean of Mercy, the Lord, spoke thus again and again, and then disappeared.
दंपति उर धरि भगत कृपाला। तेहिं आश्रम निवसे कछु काला॥ समय पाइ तनु तजि अनयासा। जाइ कीन्ह अमरावति बासा॥ ४ ॥

daṃpati ura dhari bhagata kṛpālā। tehiṃ āśrama nivasē kachu kālā॥ samaya pāi tanu taji anayāsā। jāi kīnha amarāvati bāsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The gracious Lord kept the devoted couple in His heart, and they stayed in that hermitage for some time. Then, when the time came, they easily laid aside their bodies and went to dwell in Amaravati.
यह इतिहास पुनीत अति उमहि कही बृषकेतु। भरद्वाज सुनु अपर पुनि राम जनम कर हेतु॥ १५२ ॥
