The forest dwellers receive Bharata and his party with heartfelt affection and reverence. At the same time, Kaikeyi is filled with deep remorse as she reflects on the consequences of her actions.

कोल किरात भिल्ल बनबासी। मधु सुचि सुंदर स्वादु सुधा सी॥ भरि भरि परन पुटीं रचि रूरी। कंद मूल फल अंकुर जूरी॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
kola kirāta bhilla banabāsī। madhu suci sundara svādu sudhā sī॥ bhari bhari parana puṭīṃ raci rūrī। kaṃda mūla phala aṃkura jūrī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The Kol, Kirat, and Bhil forest-dwellers gather pure, beautiful, nectar-like honey and fill it again and again into lovely leaf bowls, along with bundles of roots, fruits, and sprouts.
सबहि देहिं करि बिनय प्रनामा। कहि कहि स्वाद भेद गुन नामा॥ देहिं लोग बहु मोल न लेहीं। फेरत राम दोहाई देहीं॥ २ ॥

sabahi dehīṃ kari binaya pranāmā। kahi kahi svāda bheda guna nāmā॥ dehīṃ loka bahu mola na lehīṃ। pherata rāma dohāī dehīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
They give everything with humility and respectful bowing, telling each item's taste, variety, qualities, and name. Though people offer much money, they do not accept it, but return it, invoking Rama's name.
कहहिं सनेह मगन मृदु बानी। मानत साधु पेम पहिचानी॥ तुम्ह सुकृती हम नीच निषादा। पावा दरसनु राम प्रसादा॥ ३ ॥

kahahiṃ saneha magana mṛdu bānī। mānata sādhu pema pahicānī॥ tumha sukṛtī hama nīca niṣādā। pāvā darasanu rāma prasādā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
They speak in tender voices, full of love, saying that saints recognize and honor love. 'You are virtuous; we are lowly Nishadas. By Rama's grace alone have we obtained your darshan.'
हमहि अगम अति दरसु तुम्हारा। जस मरु धरनि देवधुनि धारा॥ राम कृपाल निषाद नेवाजा। परिजन प्रजउ चहिअ जस राजा॥ ४ ॥

hamahi agama ati darasu tumhārā। jasa maru dharani devadhuni dhārā॥ rāma kṛpāla niṣāda nevājā। parijana prajau cahiya jasa rājā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Your darshan is exceedingly rare for us, as the Ganga's stream is rare in the desert. See how the compassionate Sri Rama has blessed the Nishada. As is the king, so should be his family and subjects.
यह जियँ जानि सँकोचु तजि करिअ छोहु लखि नेहु। हमहि कृतारथ करन लगि फल तृन अंकुर लेहु॥ २५० ॥

yaha jiyaṃ jāni saṅkochu taji kariya chohu lakhi nehu। hamahi kṛtāratha karana lagi phala tṛna aṃkura lehu॥ 250 ॥
Meaning:
Knowing this in your heart, set aside hesitation; seeing our love, show us compassion, and to make us fulfilled, take these fruits, grasses, and sprouts.
तुम्ह प्रिय पाहुने बन पगु धारे। सेवा जोगु न भाग हमारे॥ देब काह हम तुम्हहि गोसाँई। ईंधनु पात किरात मिताई॥ १ ॥

tumha priya pāhune bana pagu dhāre। sevā jogu na bhāga hamāre॥ deba kāha hama tumhahi gosāṃī। īṃdhanu pāta kirāta mitāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
You, our beloved guest, have come into the forest. We have no fortune worthy of serving you. O Lord, what can we give you? For the friendship of the Bhils is only as far as firewood and leaves.
यह हमारि अति बड़ि सेवकाई। लेहिं न बासन बसन चोराई॥ हम जड़ जीव जीव गन घाती। कुटिल कुचाली कुमति कुजाती॥ २ ॥

yaha hamāri ati baṛi sevakāī। lehīṃ na bāsana basana corāī॥ hama jaḍa jīva jīva gana ghātī। kuṭila kucālī kumati kujātī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
This is the greatest service we can render: we do not steal your pots or clothes. We are inert beings, slayers of living creatures, crooked, ill-conducted, foolish, and low-born.
पाप करत निसि बासर जाहीं। नहिं पट कटि नहिं पेट अघाहीं॥ सपनेहुँ धरमबुद्धि कस काऊ। यह रघुनंदन दरस प्रभाऊ॥ ३ ॥

pāpa karata nisi bāsara jāhīṃ। rahiṃ paṭa kaṭi nahiṃ peṭa aghāhīṃ॥ sapanehuṃ dharamabuddhi kasa kāū। yaha raghunandana darasa prabhāū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Our days and nights pass in sin. Still, we have no cloth to cover our waists and cannot fill our bellies. Even in dreams we have no thought of righteousness. All this is the power of beholding the descendant of Raghu.
जब तें प्रभु पद पदुम निहारे। मिटे दुसह दुख दोष हमारे॥ बचन सुनत पुरजन अनुरागे। तिन्ह के भाग सराहन लागे॥ ४ ॥

jaba teṃ prabhu pada paduma nihāre। miṭe dusaha dukha doṣa hamāre॥ bacana sunata purajana anurāge। tinha ke bhāga sarāhana lāge॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Since we have seen the lotus feet of the Lord, our unbearable sorrows and faults have been removed. Hearing the words of the forest dwellers, the people of Ayodhya were filled with love and began praising their good fortune.
लागे सराहन भाग सब अनुराग बचन सुनावहीं। बोलनि मिलनि सिय राम चरन सनेहु लखि सुखु पावहीं॥ नर नारि निदरहिं नेहु निज सुनि कोल भिल्लनि की गिरा। तुलसी कृपा रघुबंसमनि की लोह लै लौका तिरा॥

lāge sarāhana bhāga saba anurāga bacana sunāvahīṃ। bolani milani siya rāma carana sanehu lakhi sukhu pāvahīṃ॥ nara nāri nidarahiṃ nehu nija suni kola bhillani kī girā। tulasī kṛpā raghubaṃsamani kī loha lai laukā tirā॥
Meaning:
Everyone began praising their good fortune and speaking words of affection. Seeing their manner of speech and meeting, and their love for the feet of Siya and Rama, they all felt bliss. Hearing the words of those Kol and Bhil men and women, all men and women scorned their own love. Tulsidas says: by the grace of the jewel of Raghu's line, iron itself carried a boat and floated across.
बिहरहिं बन चहु ओर प्रतिदिन प्रमुदित लोग सब। जल ज्यों दादुर मोर भए पीन पावस प्रथम॥ २५१ ॥

biharahiṃ bana cahu ora pratidina pramudita loka saba। jala jyoṃ dādura mora bhae pīna pāvasa prathama॥ 251 ॥
Meaning:
All the people, delighted, roam about the forest in every direction each day, just as frogs and peacocks grow plump with the first rains.
पुर जन नारि मगन अति प्रीती। बासर जाहिं पलक सम बीती॥ सीय सासु प्रति बेष बनाई। सादर करइ सरिस सेवकाई॥ १ ॥

pura jana nāri magana ati prītī। bāsara jāhiṃ palaka sama bītī॥ sīya sāsu prati beṣa banāī। sādara karai sarisa sevakāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The men and women of Ayodhya are utterly absorbed in love; their days pass as quickly as a blink. Sita, taking on the dress of each mother-in-law, serves all of them with equal reverence, like a devoted attendant.
लखा न मरमु राम बिनु काहूँ। माया सब सिय माया माहूँ॥ सीयँ सासु सेवा बस कीन्हीं। तिन्ह लहि सुख सिख आसिष दीन्हीं॥ २ ॥

lakhā na maramu rāma binu kāhūṃ। māyā saba siya māyā māhūṃ॥ sīyaṃ sāsu sevā basa kīnnhīṃ। tinha lahi sukha sikha āsiṣa dīnhīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
No one except Rama understood this secret. All forms of maya are contained within Sita's maya. Sita won over the mothers-in-law through her service; pleased and comforted, they gave her instruction and blessings.
लखि सिय सहित सरल दोउ भाई। कुटिल रानि पछितानि अघाई॥ अवनि जमहि जाचति कैकेई। महि न बीचु बिधि मीचु न देई॥ ३ ॥

lakhi siya sahita sarala dou bhāī। kuṭila rāni pachitāni aghāī॥ avani jamahi jācati kaikēī। mahi na bīcu bidhi mīcu na deī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Rama and Lakshmana together with Sita so gentle and simple, the crooked Queen Kaikeyi was overwhelmed with regret. She appeals to Earth and to Yama, but the earth gives no opening and Fate grants no death.
लोकहुँ बेद बिदित कबि कहहीं। राम बिमुख थलु नरक न लहहीं॥ यहु संसउ सब के मन माहीं। राम गवनु बिधि अवध कि नाहीं॥ ४ ॥

lokahuṃ beda bidita kabi kahahīṃ। rāma bimukha thalu naraka na lahahīṃ॥ yahu saṃsau saba ke mana māhīṃ। rāma gavanu bidhi avadha ki nāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
It is famous among the world and the Vedas, and the poets too say: one who turns away from Rama finds no refuge even in hell. A doubt filled everyone's heart: O Providence, will Rama go to Ayodhya or not?
निसि न नीद नहिं भूख दिन भरतु बिकल सुचि सोच। नीच कीच बिच मगन जस मीनहि सलिल सँकोच॥ २५२ ॥

nisi na nīda nahīṃ bhūkha dina bharatu bikala suci soca। nīca kīca bica magana jasa mīnahi salila saṃkoca॥ 252 ॥
Meaning:
Bharata has neither sleep at night nor hunger by day. He is disturbed by pure sorrowful thought, like a fish trapped low in the mud and made uneasy by the shrinking water.
कीन्हि मातु मिस काल कुचाली। ईति भीति जस पाकत साली॥ केहि बिधि होइ राम अभिषेकू। मोहि अवकलत उपाउ न एकू॥ १ ॥

kīnhi mātu misa kāla kuchālī। īti bhīti jasa pākata sālī॥ kehi bidhi hoi rāma abhiṣekū। mohi avakalata upāu na ekū॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Through the guise of the Mother, Fate has done a sinister deed, like an insect-fear arising when paddy is ripening. In what way will Rama's coronation happen now? I can think of no remedy at all.
अवसि फिरहिं गुर आयसु मानी। मुनि पुनि कहब राम रुचि जानी॥ मातु कहेहुँ बहुरहिं रघुराऊ। राम जननि हठ करबि कि काऊ॥ २ ॥

avasi phirahiṃ guru āyasu mānī। muni puni kahaba rāma ruci jānī॥ mātu kahehuṃ bahurahiṃ raghurāū। rāma janani haṭha karabi ki kāū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Obeying the Guru's command, Rama will certainly return to Ayodhya. But the sage, knowing Rama's wish, will speak only afterward. Even at the Mother's request, Lord Raghunath may return; but would Rama's own mother ever be obstinate?
मोहि अनुचर कर केतिक बाता। तेहि महँ कुसमउ बाम बिधाता॥ जौं हठ करउँ त निपट कुकरमू। हरगिरि तें गुरु सेवक धरमू॥ ३ ॥

mohi anucara kara ketika bātā। tehi mahaṃ kusamau bāma bidhātā॥ joṃ haṭha karaũ ta nipaṭa kukaramū। haragiri teṃ guru sevaka dharamū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
What is my poor servantship worth? Besides, the time is unfavorable and Fate is hostile. If I insist, it will be a grave wrong, for a servant's duty is heavier than Mount Hari.
एकउ जुगुति न मन ठहरानी। सोचत भरतहि रैनि बिहानी॥ प्रात नहाइ प्रभुहि सिर नाई। बैठत पठए रिषयँ बोलाई॥ ४ ॥

ekau juguti na mana ṭhaharānī। socata bharatahi raini bihānī॥ prāta nahāi prabhuhi sira nāī। baiṭhata paṭhē riṣayaṃ bolāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
No solution stayed in Bharata's mind. Thinking and thinking, the night passed. At dawn, after bathing and bowing his head to the Lord, he was seated when the sages were summoned.
गुर पद कमल प्रनामु करि बैठे आयसु पाइ। बिप्र महाजन सचिव सब जुरे सभासद आइ॥ २५३ ॥

gura pada kamala pranāmu kari baiṭhe āyasu pāi। bipra mahājana saciva saba jure sabhāsada āi॥ 253 ॥
Meaning:
Bharata bowed at the Guru's lotus feet and, receiving his command, sat down. Then Brahmins, great householders, ministers, and all the members of the assembly gathered there.
