Return Across the Sea and Hanuman's Report to Rama
Hanuman returns across the sea and rejoins the vanaras, who celebrate joyfully in Madhuvan. Before Sugriva and then Rama, he presents news of Sita, her Chudamani, and her message.

चलत महाधुनि गर्जेसि भारी। गर्भ स्रवहिं सुनि निसिचर नारी॥ नाघि सिंधु एहि पारहि आवा। सबद किलिकिला कपिन्ह सुनावा॥ १ ॥

calata mahādhuni garjesi bhārī। garbha sravahiṃ suni nisichara nārī॥ nāghi sindhu ehi pārahi āvā। sabada kilikilā kapinha sunāvā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
As he went along, he roared loudly with a tremendous sound, and hearing it, the wombs of the demon women began to miscarry. Crossing the ocean, he came to this shore and gave the vanaras the cry of joy, 'kilikila.'
हरषे सब बिलोकि हनुमाना। नूतन जन्म कपिन्ह तब जाना॥ मुख प्रसन्न तन तेज बिराजा। कीन्हेसि रामचंद्र कर काजा॥ २ ॥

haraṣe saba biloki hanumānā। nūtana janma kapinha taba jānā॥ mukha prasanna tana teja birājā। kīnhesi rāmacandra kara kājā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
All became joyful on seeing Hanuman, and then the vanaras felt as though they had been born anew. His face was cheerful and his body shone with brilliance, so they understood that he had accomplished Rama's work.
मिले सकल अति भए सुखारी। तलफत मीन पाव जिमि बारी॥ चले हरषि रघुनायक पासा। पूँछत कहत नवल इतिहासा॥ ३ ॥

mile sakala ati bhae sukhārī। talphata mīna pāva jimi bārī॥ cale haraṣi raghunāyaka pāsā। pūṃchata kahata navala itihāsā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
All met Hanuman and became greatly delighted, as a thrashing fish feels when it gets water. Rejoicing, they went to Shri Raghunath, asking and telling one another the latest happenings.
तब मधुबन भीतर सब आए। अंगद संमत मधु फल खाए॥ रखवारे जब बरजन लागे। मुष्टि प्रहार हनत सब भागे॥ ४ ॥

taba madhubana bhītara saba āe। aṅgada saṃmata madhu phala khāe॥ rakhavāre jaba barajana lāge। muṣṭi prahāra hanata saba bhāge॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then all went inside Madhuvan, and with Angada's approval they ate the sweet fruits. When the guards tried to stop them, they fled as soon as the vanaras began striking with their fists.
जाइ पुकारे ते सब बन उजार जुबराज। सुनि सुग्रीव हरष कपि करि आए प्रभु काज॥ २८ ॥

jāi pukāre te saba bana ujāra jubarāja। suni sugrīva haraṣa kapi kari āe prabhu kāja॥ 28 ॥
Meaning:
They went and cried out that the prince Angada was laying waste the grove. Hearing this, Sugriva was delighted that the vanaras had accomplished the Lord's work.
जौं न होति सीता सुधि पाई। मधुबन के फल सकहिं कि खाई॥ एहि बिधि मन बिचार कर राजा। आइ गए कपि सहित समाजा॥ १ ॥

jauṃ na hoti sītā sudhi pāī। madhubana ke phala sakahiṃ ki khāī॥ ehi bidhi mana bicāra kara rājā। āi gae kapi sahita samājā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
If Sita's whereabouts had not been found, could they have eaten the fruits of Madhuvan? King Sugriva was pondering this when the vanaras arrived with their company.
आइ सबन्हि नावा पद सीसा। मिलेउ सबन्हि अति प्रेम कपीसा॥ पूँछी कुसल कुसल पद देखी। राम कृपाँ भा काजु बिसेषी॥ २ ॥

āi sabanhi nāvā pada sīsā। mileu sabanhi ati prema kapīsā॥ pūṃchī kusala kusala pada dekhī। rāma kṛpāṃ bhā kāju biseṣī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
All came and bowed their heads at Sugriva's feet. The lord of the vanaras met them with great affection. He asked after their welfare, and they replied, 'By seeing your feet, all is well. By Rama's grace, the task has been especially successful.'
नाथ काजु कीन्हेउ हनुमाना। राखे सकल कपिन्ह के प्राना॥ सुनि सुग्रीव बहुरि तेहि मिलेऊ। कपिन्ह सहित रघुपति पहिं चलेऊ॥ ३ ॥

nātha kāju kīnheu hanumānā। rākhe sakala kapinha ke prānā॥ suni sugrīva bahuri tehi mileū। kapinha sahita raghupati pahiṃ caleū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, Hanuman alone accomplished the task and saved the lives of all the vanaras. Hearing this, Sugriva met Hanuman again, and then went with all the vanaras to Shri Raghunath.
राम कपिन्ह जब आवत देखा। किएँ काजु मन हरष बिसेषा॥ फटिक सिला बैठे द्वौ भाई। परे सकल कपि चरनन्हि जाई॥ ४ ॥

rāma kapinha jaba āvata dekhā। kieṃ kāju mana haraṣa biseṣā॥ phaṭika silā baiṭhe dvau bhāī। pare sakala kapi carananhi jāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
When Rama saw the vanaras returning after accomplishing the task, He felt great joy in His heart. The two brothers were seated on a crystal slab. All the vanaras went and fell at their feet.
प्रीति सहित सब भेटे रघुपति करुना पुंज। पूँछी कुसल नाथ अब कुसल देखि पद कंज॥ २९ ॥

prīti sahita saba bheṭe raghupati karunā puṃja। pūṃchī kusala nātha aba kusala dekhi pada kañja॥ 29 ॥
Meaning:
The treasure of compassion, Shri Raghunath, embraced them all with affection and asked after their welfare. [The vanaras said:] O Lord, now all is well, for we have seen your lotus feet.
जामवंत कह सुनु रघुराया। जा पर नाथ करहु तुम्ह दाया॥ ताहि सदा सुभ कुसल निरंतर। सुर नर मुनि प्रसन्न ता ऊपर॥ १ ॥

jāmavanta kaha sunu raghurāyā। jā para nātha karahu tumha dayā॥ tāhi sadā subha kusala niraṃtara। sura nara muni prasanna tā ūpara॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Jambavan said, 'Listen, O Raghu's Lord. O Lord, upon whom You bestow Your grace, there is always auspiciousness and unbroken welfare. Gods, humans, and sages are all pleased with him.'
सोइ बिजई बिनई गुन सागर। तासु सुजसु त्रैलोक उजागर॥ प्रभु कीं कृपा भयउ सबु काजू। जन्म हमार सुफल भा आजू॥ २ ॥

soi bijai binai guna sāgara। tāsu sujasa trailoka ujāgara॥ prabhu kīṃ kṛpā bhayau sabu kājū। janma hamāra suphala bhā ājū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
He alone is victorious, humble, and an ocean of virtues. His glorious fame shines throughout the three worlds. By the Lord's grace, everything has been accomplished. Today our birth has become fruitful.
नाथ पवनसुत कीन्हि जो करनी। सहसहुँ मुख न जाइ सो बरनी॥ पवनतनय के चरित सुहाए। जामवंत रघुपतिहि सुनाए॥ ३ ॥

nātha pavanasuta kīnhi jo karanī। sahasahuṃ mukha na jāi so baranī॥ pavanatanaya ke carita suhāe। jāmavanta raghupatihi sunāe॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, the deeds performed by the Son of the Wind, Hanuman, cannot be described even with a thousand mouths. Then Jambavan recounted Hanuman's noble exploits to Shri Raghunath.
सुनत कृपानिधि मन अति भाए। पुनि हनुमान हरषि हियँ लाए॥ कहहु तात केहि भाँति जानकी। रहति करति रच्छा स्वप्रान की॥ ४ ॥

sunata kṛpānidhi mana ati bhāe। puni hanumāna haraṣi hiyaṃ lāe॥ kahahu tāta kehi bhāṃti jānakī। rahati karati racchā svaprāna kī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing these accounts, the mind of the ocean of mercy, Shri Ramchandra, was greatly pleased. He joyfully embraced Hanuman again and said, 'Tell me, dear one, how does Janaki live, and how does she protect her life?'
नाम पाहरू दिवस निसि ध्यान तुम्हार कपाट। लोचन निज पद जंत्रित जाहिं प्रान केहिं बाट॥ ३० ॥

nāma pāharū divasa nisi dhyāna tumhāra kapāṭa। locana nija pada jantrita jāhiṃ prāna kehiṃ bāṭa॥ 30 ॥
Meaning:
(Hanuman said:) Your Name keeps guard day and night, and meditation on You is the door. Her eyes remain fixed on Your feet; that is the lock. Then, if her life-breath must depart, by what path could it go?
चलत मोहि चूड़ामनि दीन्ही। रघुपति हृदयँ लाइ सोइ लीन्ही॥ नाथ जुगल लोचन भरि बारी। बचन कहे कछु जनककुमारी॥ १ ॥

calata mohi cūṛāmani dīnhī। raghupati hṛdayaṃ lāi soi līnhī॥ nātha jugala locana bhari bārī। bacana kahe kachu janakakumārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
As she was leaving, she gave me the chūḍāmaṇi. Lord Raghupati took it and pressed it to his heart. Then, O Lord, with tears filling both eyes, Janaki spoke a few words to me.
अनुज समेत गहेहु प्रभु चरना। दीन बंधु प्रनतारति हरना॥ मन क्रम बचन चरन अनुरागी। केहिं अपराध नाथ हौं त्यागी॥ २ ॥

anuja sameta gahehu prabhu caranā। dīna bandhu pranatārati harnā॥ mana krama bacana carana anurāgī। kehiṃ aparādha nātha hauṃ tyāgī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Holding the Lord's feet together with your younger brother, and saying: 'You are the Friend of the poor and the remover of the suffering of those who seek refuge; I am devoted to your feet in mind, speech, and action. Then for what offense, O Lord, have You forsaken me?'
अवगुन एक मोर मैं माना। बिछुरत प्रान न कीन्ह पयाना॥ नाथ सो नयनन्हि को अपराधा। निसरत प्रान करहिं हठि बाधा॥ ३ ॥

avaguna eka mora maiṃ mānā। bichurata prāna na kīnha payānā॥ nātha so nayananhi ko aparādhā। nisarata prāna karahiṃ haṭhi bādhā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
[Yes], I do admit one fault of mine: when I was separated from you, my life did not depart. But, O Lord, the eyes are to blame, for they stubbornly prevent the life from leaving.
बिरह अगिनि तनु तूल समीरा। स्वास जरइ छन माहिं सरीरा॥ नयन स्रवहिं जलु निज हित लागी। जरैं न पाव देह बिरहागी॥ ४ ॥

biraha agini tanu tūla samīrā। svāsa jarai chana māhiṃ sarīrā॥ nayana sravahiṃ jalu nija hita lāgī। jaraiṃ na pāva deha birahāgī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Separation is fire, the body is cotton, and breath is the wind; thus, when these come together, the body can burn up in an instant. Yet the eyes pour out water for their own good, so that the body is not consumed by the fire of separation.
निमिष निमिष करुनानिधि जाहिं कलप सम बीति। बेगि चलिअ प्रभु आनिअ भुज बल खल दल जीति॥ ३१ ॥

nimiṣa nimiṣa karuṇānidhi jāhiṃ kalapa sama bīti। begi calia prabhu ānia bhuja bala khala dala jīti॥ 31 ॥
Meaning:
O Ocean of compassion, every moment passes like an age for her. Therefore, O Lord, come quickly and, by the strength of your arms, defeat the host of the wicked and bring Sita back.
सुनि सीता दुख प्रभु सुख अयना। भरि आए जल राजिव नयना॥ बचन कायँ मन मम गति जाही। सपनेहुँ बूझिअ बिपति कि ताही॥ १ ॥

suni sītā dukha prabhu sukha ayanā। bhari āe jala rājiva nayanā॥ bacana kāyaṃ mana mama gati jāhī। sapanēṃhu būjhia bipati ki tāhī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing of Sita's sorrow, the Lord, the abode of bliss, had tears fill his lotus eyes, and said: 'For the one whose refuge is in me in mind, speech, and body, can calamity even appear in a dream?'
कह हनुमंत बिपति प्रभु सोई। जब तव सुमिरन भजन न होई॥ केतिक बात प्रभु जातुधान की। रिपुहि जीति आनिबी जानकी॥ २ ॥

kaha hanumanta bipati prabhu soī। jaba tava sumirana bhajana na hoī॥ ketika bāta prabhu jātudhāna kī। ripuhi jīti ānibī jānakī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman said: 'O Lord, true calamity is only when Your remembrance and worship are absent. What is the matter of the demons? You will conquer the enemy and bring Janaki back.'
सुनु कपि तोहि समान उपकारी। नहिं कोउ सुर नर मुनि तनुधारी॥ प्रति उपकार करौं का तोरा। सनमुख होइ न सकत मन मोरा॥ ३ ॥

sunu kapi tohi samāna upakārī। nahiṃ kou sura nara muni tanudhārī॥ prati upakāra karaṃ kā torā। sanamukha hoi na sakata mana morā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
[The Lord said:] 'Listen, O Hanuman. No embodied being—god, man, or sage—is as much a benefactor to me as you are. What return of favor can I possibly make to you? Even my mind cannot stand before you.'
सुनु सुत तोहि उरिन मैं नाहीं। देखेउँ करि बिचार मन माहीं॥ पुनि पुनि कपिहि चितव सुरत्राता। लोचन नीर पुलक अति गाता॥ ४ ॥

sunu suta tohi urina maiṃ nāhīṃ। dekheuṃ kari bicāra mana māhīṃ॥ puni puni kapihi citava suratrātā। locana nīra pulaka ati gātā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O son, listen; I have thought it over carefully and found that I cannot repay you. The Protector of the gods kept looking again and again at Hanuman; his eyes were filled with tears of love and his whole body thrilled with joy.
सुनि प्रभु बचन बिलोकि मुख गात हरषि हनुमंत। चरन परेउ प्रेमाकुल त्राहि त्राहि भगवंत॥ ३२ ॥

suni prabhu bacana biloki mukha gāta haraṣi hanumanta। carana pareu premākula trāhi trāhi bhagavanta॥ 32 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the Lord's words and seeing his radiant face and thrilled limbs, Hanuman was overjoyed and, overwhelmed with love, fell at Sri Rama's feet, crying, 'Save me, save me, O Lord!'
बार बार प्रभु चहइ उठावा। प्रेम मगन तेहि उठब न भावा॥ प्रभु कर पंकज कपि कें सीसा। सुमिरि सो दसा मगन गौरीसा॥ १ ॥

bāra bāra prabhu cahai uṭhāvā। prema magana tehi uṭhaba na bhāvā॥ prabhu kara paṅkaja kapi keṃ sīsā। sumiri so dasā magana gaurīsā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The Lord wanted to lift him again and again, but Hanuman, immersed in love, did not wish to rise from the Lord's feet. The Lord's lotus hand rested on Hanuman's head. Remembering that state, Shiva was filled with love.
सावधान मन करि पुनि संकर। लागे कहन कथा अति सुंदर॥ कपि उठाइ प्रभु हृदयँ लगावा। कर गहि परम निकट बैठावा॥ २ ॥

sāvadhāna mana kari puni saṃkara। lāge kahana kathā ati sundara॥ kapi uṭhāi prabhu hṛdayaṃ lagāvā। kara gahi parama nikaṭa baiṭhāvā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Then, making his mind attentive, Shankar began to tell a most beautiful tale. The Lord lifted Hanuman, embraced him to his heart, and holding his hand seated him very close.
कहु कपि रावन पालित लंका। केहि बिधि दहेउ दुर्ग अति बंका॥ प्रभु प्रसन्न जाना हनुमाना। बोला बचन बिगत अभिमाना॥ ३ ॥

kahu kapi rāvana pālita laṃkā। kehi bidhi daheu durga ati baṃkā॥ prabhu prasanna jānā hanumānā। bolā bacana bigata abhimānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
'Tell me, O monkey, how did you burn Lanka, guarded by Ravana, and how did you burn that extremely formidable fortress?' Hanuman understood that the Lord was pleased, and he spoke words free from pride.
साखामृग कै बड़ि मनुसाई। साखा तें साखा पर जाई॥ नाघि सिंधु हाटकपुर जारा। निसिचर गन बधि बिपिन उजारा॥ ४ ॥

sākhāmṛga kai baṛi manusāī। sākhā teṃ sākhā para jāī॥ nāghi sindhu hāṭakapura jārā। nisicara gana badhi bipina ujārā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
For a monkey, the great feat is simply to go from one branch to another. As for me, I crossed the ocean, burned the golden city, and after killing the demons, laid waste to the grove.
ता कहुँ प्रभु कछु अगम नहिं जा पर तुम्ह अनुकूल। तब प्रभावँ बड़वानलहि जारि सकइ खलु तूल॥ ३३ ॥

tā kahuṃ prabhu kachu agama nahiṃ jā para tumha anukūla। taba prabhāvaṃ baṛavānalahi jāri sakai khalu tūla॥ 33 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, for the one on whom You are pleased, nothing is difficult. By Your power, even cotton—something that burns very easily—can surely burn the submarine fire (that is, the impossible can become possible).
नाथ भगति अति सुखदायनी। देहु कृपा करि अनपायनी॥ सुनि प्रभु परम सरल कपि बानी। एवमस्तु तब कहेउ भवानी॥ १ ॥

nātha bhagati ati sukhadāyanī। dehu kṛpā kari anapāyanī॥ suni prabhu parama sarala kapi bānī। evamastu taba kaheu bhavānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, grant me Your unfailing devotion, which brings supreme joy, out of grace. Hearing Hanuman's exceedingly simple words, the Lord said, 'So be it.'
उमा राम सुभाउ जेहिं जाना। ताहि भजनु तजि भाव न आना॥ यह संबाद जासु उर आवा। रघुपति चरन भगति सोइ पावा॥ २ ॥

umā rāma subhāu jehiṃ jānā। tāhi bhajanu taji bhāva na ānā॥ yaha saṃbāda jāsu ura āvā। raghupati carana bhagati soi pāvā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
O Uma, whoever has understood Rama's nature finds no delight in anything except devotion to him. Whoever takes this dialogue of lord and servant into the heart attains devotion at Raghupati's feet.
सुनि प्रभु बचन कहहिं कपिबृंदा। जय जय जय कृपाल सुखकंदा॥ तब रघुपति कपिपतिहि बोलावा। कहा चलैं कर करहु बनावा॥ ३ ॥

suni prabhu bacana kahahiṃ kapibṛndā। jaya jaya jaya kṛpāla sukhakandā॥ taba raghupati kapipatihi bolāvā। kahā calaiṃ kara karahu banāvā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the Lord's words, the host of monkeys cried, 'Victory, victory, victory to the merciful source of joy!' Then Raghupati summoned Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, and said, 'Make ready to depart.'
अब बिलंबु केहि कारन कीजे। तुरत कपिन्ह कहुँ आयसु दीजे॥ कौतुक देखि सुमन बहु बरषी। नभ तें भवन चले सुर हरषी॥ ४ ॥

aba bilaṃbu kehi kārana kīje। turata kapinha kahuṃ āyasu dīje॥ kautuka dekhi sumana bahu baraṣī। nabha teṃ bhavana cale sura haraṣī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Why should there be any delay now? Give the monkeys their orders at once. Seeing this divine sport of the Lord, the gods showered many flowers and, rejoicing, returned from the sky to their own abodes.
कपिपति बेगि बोलाए आए जूथप जूथ। नाना बरन अतुल बल बानर भालु बरूथ॥ ३४ ॥

kapipati begi bolāe āe jūthapa jūtha। nānā barana atula bala bānara bhālu barūtha॥ 34 ॥
Meaning:
King of the monkeys Sugriva quickly summoned the monkeys; the groups of commanders arrived. The bands of monkeys and bears were of many colors and possessed incomparable strength.
