Rama's Displeasure with Sugriva and Lakshmana's Anger
When Sugriva does not begin the search for Sita even after the rains have passed, Rama becomes displeased. Lakshmana then sets out for Kishkindha in intense anger.

बरषा गत निर्मल रितु आई। सुधि न तात सीता कै पाई॥ एक बार कैसेहुँ सुधि जानौं। कालहु जीति निमिष महुँ आनौं॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
barasā gata nirmala ritu āī। sudhi na tāta sītā kai pāī॥ eka bāra kaisehuṃ sudhi jānauṃ। kālahu jīti nimiṣa mahuṃ ānauṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The rains had passed; the clear autumn season came. Yet, O dear father, no news of Sita was found. If by some means I could know once, I would conquer even Time and bring Janaki back in a moment.
कतहुँ रहउ जौं जीवति होई। तात जतन करि आनउँ सोई॥ सुग्रीवहुँ सुधि मोरि बिसारी। पावा राज कोस पुर नारी॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
katahuṃ rahau jauṃ jīvati hoī। tāta jatana kari ānauṃ soī॥ sugrīvahuṃ sudhi mori bisārī। pāvā rāja kosa pura nārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Wherever she may be, if she is alive, O father, I shall bring her back by effort. Having obtained kingdom, treasury, city, and a wife, Sugriva too forgot my remembrance.
जेहिं सायक मारा मैं बाली। तेहिं सर हतौं मूढ़ कहँ काली॥ जासु कृपाँ छूटहिं मद मोहा। ता कहुँ उमा कि सपनेहुँ कोहा॥ ३ ॥

jehiṃ sāyaka mārā maiṃ bālī। tehiṃ sara hatauṃ mūṛha kahaṃ kālī॥ jāsu kṛpāṃ chūṭahiṃ mada mohā। tā kahuṃ umā ki sapanehuṃ kohā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
With the arrow by which I killed Bali, with that same arrow tomorrow I will kill that fool! [Shiva says:] O Uma, can anger ever arise in those by whose grace pride and delusion are removed? [It is all a divine play.]
जानहिं यह चरित्र मुनि ग्यानी। जिन्ह रघुबीर चरन रति मानी॥ लछिमन क्रोधवंत प्रभु जाना। धनुष चढ़ाइ गहे कर बाना॥ ४ ॥

jānahiṃ yaha caritra muni gyānī। jinha raghubīra carana rati mānī॥ lachimana krodhavanta prabhu jānā। dhanuṣa caṛhāi gahe kara bānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The wise sages who have cherished devotion to the feet of Raghubir alone know this story, the secret of the Lord's play. When Lakshmana saw that the Lord had become angry, he strung his bow and took arrows in hand.
तब अनुजहि समुझावा रघुपति करुना सींव। भय देखाइ लै आवहु तात सखा सुग्रीव॥ १८ ॥

taba anujahi samujhāvā raghupati karuṇā sīṃva। bhaya dekhāi lai āvahu tāta sakhā sugrīva॥ 18 ॥
Meaning:
Then the embodiment of compassion, Raghunath, explained to his younger brother: 'O dear one, bring my friend Sugriva here by showing him fear [only].'
इहाँ पवनसुत हृदयँ बिचारा। राम काजु सुग्रीवँ बिसारा॥ निकट जाइ चरनन्हि सिरु नावा। चारिहु बिधि तेहि कहि समुझावा॥ १ ॥

ihāṃ pavanasuta hṛdayaṃ bicārā। rāma kāju sugrīvaṃ bisārā॥ nikaṭa jāi carananhi siru nāvā। cārihu bidhi tehi kahi samujhāvā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Here, in Kishkindha, Hanuman, son of the Wind, reflected that Sugriva had forgotten Rama's work. He went close, bowed his head at their feet, and instructed him, explaining the four modes of policy.
सुनि सुग्रीवँ परम भय माना। बिषयँ मोर हरि लीन्हेउ ग्याना॥ अब मारुतसुत दूत समूहा। पठवहु जहँ तहँ बानर जूहा॥ २ ॥

suni sugrīvaṃ parama bhaya mānā। biṣayaṃ mora hari līnheu gyānā॥ aba mārutasuta dūta samūhā। paṭhavahu jahaṃ tahaṃ bānara jūhā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing Hanuman's words, Sugriva became extremely afraid and said, 'Worldly objects have taken away my wisdom. Now, O son of the Wind, send groups of messengers wherever the bands of monkeys are.'
कहहु पाख महुँ आव न जोई। मोरें कर ता कर बध होई॥ तब हनुमंत बोलाए दूता। सब कर करि सनमान बहूता॥ ३ ॥

kahahu pākha mahuṃ āva na joī। moreṃ kara tā kara badha hoī॥ taba hanumanta bolāe dūtā। saba kara kari sanamāna bahūtā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
And tell them that whoever does not come within a fortnight will be slain by my hand. Then Hanuman summoned the messengers and honored them greatly all together—
भय अरु प्रीति नीति देखराई। चले सकल चरनन्हि सिर नाई॥ एहि अवसर लछिमन पुर आए। क्रोध देखि जहँ तहँ कपि धाए॥ ४ ॥

bhaya aru prīti nīti dekharāī। cale sakala carananhi siru nāī॥ ehi avasara lachimana pura āe। krodha dekhi jahaṃ tahaṃ kapi dhāe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He displayed fear, affection, and policy, and all the monkeys bowed their heads and departed. At that time Lakshmana arrived in the city. Seeing his anger, the monkeys ran here and there.
धनुष चढ़ाइ कहा तब जारि करउँ पुर छार। ब्याकुल नगर देखि तब आयउ बालिकुमार॥ १९ ॥

dhanuṣa caṛhāi kahā taba jāri karauṃ pura chāra। byākula nagara dekhi taba āyau bālikumāra॥ 19 ॥
Meaning:
Then Lakshmana strung his bow and said, 'I shall burn the city and reduce it to ashes at once.' Seeing the whole city in turmoil, Angada, son of Bali, came to him.
चरन नाइ सिरु बिनती कीन्ही। लछिमन अभय बाँह तेहि दीन्ही॥ क्रोधवंत लछिमन सुनि काना। कह कपीस अति भयँ अकुलाना॥ १ ॥

carana nāi siru binatī kīnhī। lachimana abhaya bāṃha tehi dīnhī॥ krodhavanta lachimana suni kānā। kaha kapīsa ati bhayaṃ akunlānā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Angada bowed his head at their feet and made his plea. Then Lakshmana gave him assurance with an outstretched arm, saying, 'Do not fear.' Hearing the angry words of Lakshmana, Sugriva became utterly distressed with fear and said—
सुनु हनुमंत संग लै तारा। करि बिनती समुझाउ कुमारा॥ तारा सहित जाइ हनुमाना। चरन बंदि प्रभु सुजस बखाना॥ २ ॥

sunu hanumanta saṃga lai tārā। kari binatī samujhāu kumārā॥ tārā sahita jāi hanumānā। carana bandi prabhu sujasa bakhānā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Listen, Hanuman; take Tara with you and, by making a request, persuade the prince. Then Hanuman, with Tara, went and bowed at the Lord's feet and praised His glorious fame.
करि बिनती मंदिर लै आए। चरन पखारि पलँग बैठाए॥ तब कपीस चरनन्हि सिरु नावा। गहि भुज लछिमन कंठ लगावा॥ ३ ॥

kari binatī mandira lai āe। carana pakhāri palaṅga baiṭhāe॥ taba kapīsa carananhi siru nāvā। gahi bhuja lachimana kaṃṭha lagāvā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
They brought him into the palace with entreaty, washed his feet, and seated him on a bed. Then the lord of the monkeys bowed his head at their feet, and Lakshmana embraced him by taking him by the arm and drawing him to his neck.
नाथ बिषय सम मद कछु नाहीं। मुनि मन मोह करइ छन माहीं॥ सुनत बिनीत बचन सुख पावा। लछिमन तेहि बहु बिधि समुझावा॥ ४ ॥

nātha biṣaya sama mada kachū nāhīṃ। muni mana moha kara'i chana māhīṃ॥ sunata binita vacana sukha pāvā। lachimana tehi bahu bidhi samujhāvā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
[Sugriva said:] O Lord, there is no arrogance like that of the senses. It can delude even the minds of sages in an instant. Hearing Sugriva's humble words, Lakshmana felt pleased and admonished him in many ways.
हरषि चले सुग्रीव तब अंगदादि कपि साथ। रामानुज आगें करि आए जहँ रघुनाथ॥ २० ॥

haraṣi cale sugrīva taba aṃgadādi kapi sātha। rāmānuja āgeṃ kari āe jahaṃ raghunātha॥ 20 ॥
Meaning:
Then Sugriva departed joyfully with Angada and the other monkeys, placing Lakshmana, Rama's younger brother, in front, and came to where Raghunath was.
