बरषा बिगत सरद रितु आई। लछिमन देखहु परम सुहाई॥ फूलें कास सकल महि छाई। जनु बरषाँ कृत प्रगट बुढ़ाई॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
baraṣā bigata sarada ritu āī। lachhimana dekhu parama suhāī॥ phūleṃ kāsa sakala mahi chāī। janu baraṣāṃ kṛta pragaṭa buṛhāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Lakshmana, look: the rainy season has passed and the supremely lovely autumn has arrived. The earth is covered with blooming kash grass, as though the rainy season has revealed its old age in the form of white hair.
उदित अगस्ति पंथ जल सोषा। जिमि लोभहि सोषइ संतोषा॥ सरिता सर निर्मल जल सोहा। संत हृदय जस गत मद मोहा॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
udita agasti pantha jala soṣā। jimi lobhahi soṣai santoṣā॥ saritā sara nirmala jala sohā। santa hṛdaya jasa gata mada mohā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The star Agastya has risen and absorbed the water on the road, just as contentment absorbs greed. The clear waters of rivers and lakes shine beautifully, like the hearts of saints free from pride and delusion.
रस रस सूख सरित सर पानी। ममता त्याग करहिं जिमि ग्यानी॥ जानि सरद रितु खंजन आए। पाइ समय जिमि सुकृत सुहाए॥ ३ ॥

rasa rasa sūkha sarita sara pānī। mamatā tyāga karahiṃ jimi gyānī॥ jāni sarada ritu khajana āe। pāi samaya jimi sukṛta suhāe॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The water of rivers and ponds is slowly drying up, just as wise men renounce attachment. Knowing that autumn has arrived, the khanjan birds have come, just as auspicious merits appear when their time has come.
पंक न रेनु सोह असि धरनी। नीति निपुन नृप कै जसि करनी॥ जल संकोच बिकल भइँ मीना। अबुध कुटुंबी जिमि धनहीना॥ ४ ॥

paṃka na remu soha asi dharanī। nīti nipuna nṛpa kai jasi karanī॥ jala saṃkocha bikala bhaiṃ mīnā। abudha kuṭuṃbī jimi dhanahīnā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
There is neither mud nor dust, so the earth shines with a purity like the conduct of a wise and skillful king. As the water recedes, the fish grow distressed, just as a foolish householder becomes troubled without wealth.
बिनु घन निर्मल सोह अकासा। हरिजन इव परिहरि सब आसा॥ कहुँ कहुँ बृष्टि सारदी थोरी। कोउ एक पाव भगति जिमि मोरी॥ ५ ॥

binu ghana nirmala soha akāsā। harijana iva parihari saba āsā॥ kahuṃ kahuṃ bṛṣṭi sāradī thorī। kou eka pāva bhagati jimi morī॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
The cloudless sky shines in pure beauty, like devotees who renounce every worldly hope. Only here and there does a little autumn rain fall, just as only a rare few obtain my devotion.
चले हरषि तजि नगर नृप तापस बनिक भिखारि। जिमि हरिभगति पाइ श्रम तजहिं आश्रमी चारि॥ १६ ॥

chale haraṣi taji nagara nṛpa tāpasa banika bhikhāri। jimi haribhagati pāi śrama tajahiṃ āśramī cāri॥ 16 ॥
Meaning:
[With the arrival of autumn] kings, ascetics, merchants, and beggars all left the city rejoicing. Likewise, when devotion to Shri Hari is obtained, people of all four stages of life abandon their many forms of labor and effort.
सुखी मीन जे नीर अगाधा। जिमि हरि सरन न एकउ बाधा॥ फूलें कमल सोह सर कैसा। निर्गुन ब्रह्म सगुन भएँ जैसा॥ १ ॥

sukhī mīna je nīra agādhā। jimi hari sarana na ekau bādhā॥ phūleṃ kamala soha sara kaisā। nirguna brahma saguna bhaeṃ jaisā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The fish are happy in the fathomless waters, just as there is no obstacle at all for one who has taken refuge in Hari. As the pond becomes so lovely when the lotuses bloom, so the attributeless Brahman is adorned when it appears with attributes.
गुंजत मधुकर मुखर अनूपा। सुंदर खग रव नाना रूपा॥ चक्रबाक मन दुख निसि पेखी। जिमि दुर्जन पर संपति देखी॥ २ ॥

guṃjata madhukara mukhara anūpā। suṃdara khaga rava nānā rūpā॥ cakrabāka mana dukha nisi pekhī। jimi durjana para saṃpati dekhī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The bumblebees hum with incomparable, melodious cries, and the birds make many kinds of beautiful sounds. The chakravāka is sorrowful at nightfall, just as the wicked are when they see another's prosperity.
चातक रटत तृषा अति ओही। जिमि सुख लहइ न संकरद्रोही॥ सरदातप निसि ससि अपहरई। संत दरस जिमि पातक टरई॥ ३ ॥

cātaka raṭata tṛṣā ati ohī। jimi sukha laha'i na saṃkaradrohī॥ saradātapa nisi sasi apaharai। santa darasa jimi pātaka ṭarai॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The chatak bird keeps calling in great thirst for that alone, just as one who is hostile to Shankar finds no happiness. The moon removes the heat of an autumn night, just as the sight of saints removes sins.
देखि इंदु चकोर समुदाई। चितवहिं जिमि हरिजन हरि पाई॥ मसक दंस बीते हिम त्रासा। जिमि द्विज द्रोह किएँ कुल नासा॥ ४ ॥

dekhi iṃdu cakora samudāī। citavahiṃ jimi harijana hari pāī॥ masaka daṃsa bīte hima trāsā। jimi dvija droha kieṃ kula nāsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the moon, the flock of chakoras gaze as devotees do when they have obtained Hari. Mosquitoes and gadflies perish in the fear of winter, just as a family is destroyed by enmity toward a Brahmin.
भूमि जीव संकुल रहे गए सरद रितु पाइ। सदगुर मिलें जाहिं जिमि संसय भ्रम समुदाइ॥ १७ ॥

bhūmi jīva saṃkula rahe gae sarada ritu pāi। sadagura mileṃ jāhiṃ jimi saṃsaya bhrama samudāi॥ 17 ॥
Meaning:
The creatures that had filled the earth during the rainy season disappeared when autumn arrived, just as doubts and confusion vanish when one meets the true guru.
