Rama Calms Lakshmana and Praises Bharata
Rama gently pacifies Lakshmana and speaks of Bharata’s stainless love, humility, and devotion to dharma. He makes it clear that Bharata’s heart holds neither ambition nor deceit.

जगु भय मगन गगन भइ बानी। लखन बाहुबलु बिपुल बखानी॥ तात प्रताप प्रभाउ तुम्हारा। को कहि सकइ को जाननिहारा॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
jagu bhaya magana gagana bhai bānī। lakhana bāhu-balu bipula bakhānī॥ tāta pratāpa prabhāu tumhārā। ko kahī sakaī ko jānanihārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The whole world was overwhelmed by fear. Then a voice from the sky praised Lakshmana's immense arm-strength: 'O dear one, who can speak of your splendor and power, and who can truly know it?'
अनुचित उचित काजु किछु होऊ। समुझि करिअ भल कह सबु कोऊ॥ सहसा करि पाछें पछिताहीं। कहहिं बेद बुध ते बुध नाहीं॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
anucita ucita kāju kichhu hoū। samujhi kariya bhala kaha sabu kou॥ sahasā kari pāchẽ pachatāhīṃ। kahahiṃ beda budha te budha nāhīṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Whatever the task may be, if one carefully weighs whether it is proper or improper and then acts, everyone calls it good. The Vedas and the wise say that those who act hastily without thinking and later repent are not wise.
सुनि सुर बचन लखन सकुचाने। राम सीयँ सादर सनमाने॥ कही तात तुम्ह नीति सुहाई। सब तें कठिन राजमदु भाई॥ ३ ॥

suni sura bacana lakhana sakucāne। rāma sīyaṃ sādara sanamāne॥ kahī tāta tumha nīti suhāī। saba teṃ kaṭhina rājamada bhāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the divine voice, Lakshmana grew bashful. Rama and Sita honored him respectfully and said, 'O dear one, you have spoken noble policy. Brother, the pride of kingship is the hardest pride of all.'
जो अचवँत नृप मातहिं तेई। नाहिन साधुसभा जेहिं सेई॥ सुनहु लखन भल भरत सरीसा। बिधि प्रपंच महँ सुना न दीसा॥ ४ ॥

jo acavaṃta nṛpa mātahiṃ teī। nāhina sādhu sabhā jehiṃ seī॥ sunahu lakhana bhalu bharata sarīsā। bidhi prapaṃca mahaṃ sunā na dīsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Those who have not served the company of saints are the ones who become intoxicated as soon as they sip the liquor of royal pride. Listen, Lakshmana: a noble man like Bharata has neither been heard of nor seen anywhere in the world of creation.
भरतहि होइ न राजमदु बिधि हरि हर पद पाइ। कबहुँ कि काँजी सीकरनि छीरसिंधु बिनसाइ॥ २३१ ॥

bharatahi hoi na rājamadu bidhi hari hara pada pāi। kabahuṃ ki kāñjī sīkarani khīrasindhu binasāi॥ 231 ॥
Meaning:
[What need is there even to speak of Ayodhya's kingdom?] Even after attaining the stations of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahadeva, Bharata cannot become proud of kingship! Can the ocean of milk ever be destroyed by drops of sour gruel?
तिमिरु तरुन तरनिहि मकु गिलई। गगनु मगन मकु मेघहिं मिलई॥ गोपद जल बूड़हिं घटजोनी। सहज छमा बरु छाड़ै छोनी॥ १ ॥

timiru taruna taranihi maku gilai। gaganu magana maku meghahiṃ milaī॥ gopada jala būḍahiṃ ghaṭajonī। sahaja chamā baru chāḍai chonī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Darkness may swallow the youthful midday sun. The sky may merge into the clouds. Even in a pool of water as small as a cow's footprint, the sea may drown, and the earth may abandon its natural forbearance.
मसक फूँक मकु मेरु उड़ाई। होइ न नृपमदु भरतहि भाई॥ लखन तुम्हार सपथ पितु आना। सुचि सुबंधु नहिं भरत समाना॥ २ ॥

masaka phūka maku meru uḍāī। hoi na nṛpamada bharatahi bhāī॥ lakhana tumhāra sapatha pitu ānā। suci subandhu nahiṃ bharata samānā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
A mosquito's breath may blow Mount Meru away, but, brother, Bharata can never be filled with royal pride. Lakshmana, I swear by you and by my father: there is no brother in the world as pure and noble as Bharata.
सगुनु खीरु अवगुन जलु ताता। मिलइ रचइ परपंचु बिधाता॥ भरतु हंस रबिबंस तड़ागा। जनमि कीन्ह गुन दोष बिभागा॥ ३ ॥

sagunu khīru avagunu jalu tātā। milai racai parapaṃcu bidhātā॥ bharatu haṃsa rabibaṃsa taḍāgā। janami kīnhi guna doṣa bibhāgā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O dear father, the Creator mixes the milk of virtue and the water of fault to fashion this visible world. But Bharata, born as a swan in the lake of the सूर्यवंश, separated virtue from fault.
गहि गुन पय तजि अवगुन बारी। निज जस जगत कीन्हि उजिआरी॥ कहत भरत गुन सीलु सुभाऊ। पेम पयोधि मगन रघुराऊ॥ ४ ॥

gahi guna paya taji avaguna bārī। nija jasa jagata kīnhi ujiyārī॥ kahata bharata guna sīlu subhāū। pema payodhi magana raghurāū॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Taking the milk of virtue and leaving aside the water of fault, Bharata has brightened the world with his own fame. As Lord Raghunatha spoke of Bharata's virtues, character, and nature, He became immersed in the ocean of love.
सुनि रघुबर बानी बिबुध देखि भरत पर हेतु। सकल सराहत राम सो प्रभु को कृपानिकेतु॥ २३२ ॥

suni raghubara bānī bibudha dekhi bharata para hetu। sakala sarāhata rāma so prabhu ko kṛpāniketu॥ 232 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing Lord Raghubara's words and seeing His affection for Bharata, all the gods began to praise Him, saying: 'Who is the Lord, the abode of grace, like Rama?'
जौं न होत जग जनम भरत को। सकल धरम धुर धरनि धरत को॥ कबि कुल अगम भरत गुन गाथा। को जानइ तुम्ह बिनु रघुनाथा॥ १ ॥

jaũ na hota jaga janama bharata ko। sakala dharama dhura dharani dharata ko॥ kabi kula agama bharata guna gāthā। ko jānai tumha binu raghunāthā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
If Bharata had not been born in this world, who would have borne the burden of all righteousness on the earth? O Raghunatha! The story of Bharata’s virtues is beyond the reach of poets; who could know it except You?
लखन राम सियँ सुनि सुर बानी। अति सुखु लहेउ न जाइ बखानी॥ इहाँ भरतु सब सहित सहाए। मंदाकिनीं पुनीत नहाए॥ २ ॥

lakhana rāma siyaṁ suni sura bānī। ati sukhu laheu na jāi bakhānī॥ ihā̃ bharatu saba sahita sahāe। mandākinīṁ punīta nahāe॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Lakshmana, Rama, and Sita heard the voice of the gods and experienced such great joy that it cannot be described. Here Bharata, along with everyone, bathed in the sacred Mandakini.
सरित समीप राखि सब लोगा। मागि मातु गुर सचिव नियोगा॥ चले भरतु जहँ सिय रघुराई। साथ निषादनाथु लघु भाई॥ ३ ॥

sarit samīpa rākhi saba logā। māgi mātu guru saciva niyogā॥ cale bharatu jahaṁ siya raghurāī। sātha niṣādanāthu laghu bhāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then, leaving everyone by the riverbank and asking the permission of his mother, guru, and ministers, Bharata went to where Sita and Lord Raghuraī were, accompanied by Nishada, the lord of the Nishadas, and his younger brother.
समुझि मातु करतब सकुचाहीं। करत कुतरक कोटि मन माहीं॥ रामु लखनु सिय सुनि मम नाऊँ। उठि जनि अनत जाहिं तजि ठाऊँ॥ ४ ॥

samujhi mātu karataba sakucāhīṁ। karata kutaraka koṭi mana māhīṁ॥ rāmu lakhanu siya suni mama nāũ̃। uṭhi jani anata jāhiṁ taji ṭhāũ̃॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Remembering his mother Kaikeyi’s actions, Bharata feels shy and entertains countless doubts in his mind: ‘If Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita hear my name, may they not rise and leave this place for somewhere else.’
मातु मते महुँ मानि मोहि जो कछु करहिं सो थोर। अघ अवगुन छमि आदरहिं समुझि आपनी ओर॥ २३३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
mātu mate mahuṁ māni mohi jo kachu karahiṁ so thora। agha avaguna chami ādarahiṁ samujhi āpanī ora॥ 233 ॥
Meaning:
If they consider me only in accordance with my mother’s wishes, whatever they do will still be little; yet, understanding my own position, they will forgive my sins and faults and show me honor.
