Bharata's Arrow and His Meeting with Hanuman
As Hanuman returns with the life-giving herb, Bharata's arrow strikes him and he falls unconscious for a moment. Their meeting then becomes a moving exchange of devotion and news of Rama.

देखा भरत बिसाल अति निसिचर मन अनुमानि। बिनु फर सायक मारेउ चाप श्रवन लगि तानि॥ ५८ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
dekhā bharata bisāla ati nisichara mana anumāni। binu phara sāyaka māreu cāpa śravana lagi tāni॥ 58 ॥
Meaning:
Bharata saw an enormously vast form in the sky and inferred in his mind that it was some demon. He drew the bow back to his ear and shot a shaft without an arrowhead.
परेउ मुरुछि महि लागत सायक। सुमिरत राम राम रघुनायक॥ सुनि प्रिय बचन भरत तब धाए। कपि समीप अति आतुर आए॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
pare'u murucci mahi lāgata sāyaka। sumirata rāma rāma raghunāyaka॥ suni priya bacana bharata taba dhāe। kapi samīpa ati ātura āe॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as the arrow struck, Hanuman fell senseless to the ground while uttering "Rama, Rama, Raghunayaka." Hearing those beloved words, Bharata ran forward and came eagerly to Hanuman.
बिकल बिलोकि कीस उर लावा। जागत नहिं बहु भाँति जगावा॥ मुख मलीन मन भए दुखारी। कहत बचन भरि लोचन बारी॥ २ ॥

vikala biloki kīsa ura lāvā। jāgata nahiṃ bahu bhāṃti jagāvā॥ mukha malīna mana bhae dukhārī। kahata bacana bhari locana bārī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Hanuman distressed, he embraced him to his heart. He tried to awaken him in many ways, but he would not wake. Then Bharata's face grew sorrowful. He became deeply grieved and, with tears filling his eyes, spoke these words:
जेहिं बिधि राम बिमुख मोहि कीन्हा। तेहिं पुनि यह दारुन दुख दीन्हा॥ जौं मोरें मन बच अरु काया। प्रीति राम पद कमल अमाया॥ ३ ॥

jehiṃ bidhi rāma bimukha mohi kīnhā। tehiṃ puni yaha dāruna dukha dīnhā॥ jaṃu morẽ mana baca aru kāyā। prīti rāma pada kamala amāyā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The Creator who made me turn away from Rama has now also given me this terrible sorrow. If, with mind, speech, and body, I have true, unfeigned love for Rama's lotus feet,
तौ कपि होउ बिगत श्रम सूला। जौं मो पर रघुपति अनुकूला॥ सुनत बचन उठि बैठ कपीसा। कहि जय जयति कोसलाधीसा॥ ४ ॥

tau kapi hou bigata śrama sūlā। jaṃu mo para raghupati anukūlā॥ sunata bacana uṭhi baiṭha kapīsā। kahi jaya jayati kosalādhīsā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
And if Lord Raghunath is gracious to me, may this monkey be freed from fatigue and pain! Hearing these words, Hanuman, lord of the monkeys, rose up and exclaimed, "Victory, victory to the Lord of Kosala!"
लीन्ह कपिहि उर लाइ पुलकित तनु लोचन सजल। प्रीति न हृदयँ समाइ सुमिरि राम रघुकुल तिलक॥ ५९ ॥

līnha kapihi ura lāi pulakita tanu locana sajala। prīti na hṛdayaṃ samāi sumiri rāma raghukula tilaka॥ 59 ॥
Meaning:
Bharata embraced the monkey Hanuman to his heart; his body thrilled with emotion and his eyes filled with tears. Remembering Rama, the jewel of Raghu's race, love would not be contained in Bharata's heart.
तात कुसल कहु सुखनिधान की। सहित अनुज अरु मातु जानकी॥ कपि सब चरित समास बखाने। भए दुखी मन महुँ पछिताने॥ १ ॥

tāta kusala kahu sukhanidhāna kī। sahita anuja aru mātu jānakī॥ kapi saba carita samāsa bakhāne। bhae dukhī mana mahuṃ pachitāne॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
[Bharat said:] O dear one, tell me whether Rama, the treasure of bliss, is well, along with his younger brother Lakshmana and Mother Janaki. The monkey related the whole story in brief. Hearing it, Bharat became sorrowful and began to repent in his heart.
अहह दैव मैं कत जग जायउँ। प्रभु के एकहु काज न आयउँ॥ जानि कुअवसरु मन धरि धीरा। पुनि कपि सन बोले बलबीरा॥ २ ॥

ahaha daiva main kata jaga jāyaum̐। prabhu ke ekahu kāja na āyaum̐॥ jāni kuavasaru mana dhari dhīrā। puni kapi sana bole balabīrā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Alas, fate! Why was I born into this world? I have not been of any use in even one task of the Lord. Knowing this was an inauspicious moment, and steadying his mind, the mighty Bharat then spoke to the monkey.
तात गहरु होइहि तोहि जाता। काजु नसाइहि होत प्रभाता॥ चढ़ु मम सायक सैल समेता। पठवौं तोहि जहँ कृपानिकेता॥ ३ ॥

tāta gaharu hoihi tohi jātā। kāju nasāihi hota prabhātā॥ caḍhu mama sāyaka saila sametā। paṭhavaum̐ tohi jahaṃ kṛpāniketā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
O dear one, if you delay in going, the task will be ruined as soon as dawn breaks. Therefore, mount my arrow together with the mountain, and I will send you where Rama, the abode of compassion, is.
सुनि कपि मन उपजा अभिमाना। मोरें भार चलिहि किमि बाना॥ राम प्रभाव बिचारि बहोरी। बंदि चरन कह कपि कर जोरी॥ ४ ॥

suni kapi mana upajā abhimānā। moreṃ bhāra calihi kimi bānā॥ rāma prabhāva bicāri bahorī। bandi carana kaha kapi kara jorī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing Bharat's words, pride arose for a moment in Hanuman's mind: how could the arrow move with my weight on it? But then, reflecting on Rama's power, the monkey bowed at Bharat's feet and spoke with folded hands.
तव प्रताप उर राखि प्रभु जैहउँ नाथ तुरंत। अस कहि आयसु पाइ पद बंदि चलेउ हनुमंत॥ ६० (क) ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
tava pratāpa ura rākhi prabhu jaihauṃ nātha turaṃta। asa kahi āyasu pāi pada bandi caleu hanumaṃta॥ 60 (a) ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, O Master, I shall keep your glory in my heart and go at once. Saying this, and having received permission, Hanuman bowed at Bharat's feet and departed.
भरत बाहुबल सील गुन प्रभु पद प्रीति अपार। मन महुँ जात सराहत पुनि पुनि पवनकुमार॥ ६० (ख) ॥

bharata bāhubala sīla guna prabhu pada prīti apāra। mana mahuṃ jāta sarāhata puni puni pavanakumāra॥ 60 (b) ॥
Meaning:
As Hanuman, son of the Wind, went on his way, he kept praising in his heart Bharat's valor, gentle nature, virtues, and his boundless devotion to the Lord's feet.
