Hanuman Brings Sushena and Sets Out for Sanjivani
Hanuman brings Sushena the physician and sets out in haste to fetch the Sanjivani herb. On the way he overcomes Kalnemi's deceit, frees Makari, and continues his sacred mission.

जामवंत कह बैद सुषेना। लंकाँ रहइ को पठई लेना॥ धरि लघु रूप गयउ हनुमंता। आनेउ भवन समेत तुरंता॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
jāmavanta kaha baida suṣenā। laṃkāṃ rahai ko paṭhaī lenā॥ dhari laghu rūpa gayau hanumaṃtā। āneu bhavana sameta turantā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Jambavan said, "Sushena the physician lives in Lanka; whom should we send to bring him?" Hanuman took a small form, went, and immediately brought Sushena along with his house.
राम पदारबिंद सिर नायउ आइ सुषेन। कहा नाम गिरि औषधी जाहु पवनसुत लेन॥ ५५ ॥

rāma padārabinda sira nāyau āi suṣena। kahā nāma giri auṣadhī jāhu pavanasuta lena॥ 55 ॥
Meaning:
Sushena came and bowed his head at Rama's lotus feet. He told the name of the mountain and the herb, saying, "Go, O Pavanputra, and bring the medicine."
राम चरन सरसिज उर राखी। चला प्रभंजनसुत बल भाषी॥ उहाँ दूत एक मरमु जनावा। रावनु कालनेमि गृह आवा॥ १ ॥

rāma carana sarasija ura rākhī। calā prabhañjanasuta bala bhāṣī॥ uhāṃ dūta eka maramu janāvā। rāvanu kālanemi gṛha āvā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Keeping Rama's lotus feet in his heart, Hanuman, the son of the Wind-God, set out while proclaiming his strength (that is, saying, "I will bring it at once"). Meanwhile, a spy informed Ravana of this secret. Then Ravana came to Kalanemi's house.
दसमुख कहा मरमु तेहिं सुना। पुनि पुनि कालनेमि सिरु धुना॥ देखत तुम्हहि नगरु जेहिं जारा। तासु पंथ को रोकन पारा॥ २ ॥

dasamukha kahā maramu tehiṃ sunā। puni puni kālanemi siru dhunā॥ dekhata tumhahi nagaru jehiṃ jārā। tāsu pantha ko rokana pārā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana told him the whole matter. Kalanemi heard it and shook his head again and again in grief. [He said:] "Who can stop the path of one who burned a city before your very eyes?"
भजु रघुपति करु हित आपना। छाँड़हु नाथ मृषा जल्पना॥ नील कंज तनु सुंदर स्यामा। हृदयँ राखु लोचनाभिरामा॥ ३ ॥

bhaju raghupati karu hita āpanā। chāṃḍhahu nātha mṛṣā jalpanā॥ nīla kaṃja tanu sundara syāmā। hṛdayaṃ rāku locanābhirāmā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Worship Raghupati and do what is for your own good. O Lord, give up false talk. Keep in your heart the beautiful dark form, like a blue lotus, that delights the eyes.
मैं तैं मोर मूढ़ता त्यागू। महा मोह निसि सूतत जागू॥ काल ब्याल कर भच्छक जोई। सपनेहुँ समर कि जीतिअ सोई॥ ४ ॥

maiṃ taiṃ mora mūḍhatā tyāgū। mahā moha nisi sūtata jāgū॥ kāla byāla kara bhacchaka joī। sapanehuṃ samara ki jītia soī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Abandon the folly of seeing yourself and others as separate, along with possessive delusion. You are asleep in the night of great delusion; wake up. Can one who is the devourer even of the serpent of Death be conquered in battle, even in a dream?
सुनि दसकंठ रिसान अति तेहिं मन कीन्ह बिचार। राम दूत कर मरौं बरु यह खल रत मल भार॥ ५६ ॥

suni dasakaṇṭha risāna ati tehiṃ mana kīnha bicāra। rāma dūta kara marauṃ baru yaha khala rata mala bhāra॥ 56 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing this, Dasakantha (Ravana) became exceedingly angry. Then Kalanemi thought in his heart, "Better that I die at the hands of Rama's messenger than by this wretch. He is immersed in heaps of sin."
अस कहि चला रचिसि मग माया। सर मंदिर बर बाग बनाया॥ मारुतसुत देखा सुभ आश्रम। मुनिहि बूझि जल पियौं जाइ श्रम॥ १ ॥

asa kahi calā racisi maga māyā। sara mandira bara bāga banāyā॥ mārutasuta dekhā subha āśrama। munihi būjhi jala piyauṃ jāi śrama॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Thinking thus, he set out and created an illusion on the way. He made a lake, a temple, and a lovely garden. Seeing the beautiful hermitage, Hanuman thought, "I will ask the sage and then drink some water, so that my fatigue may be relieved."
राच्छस कपट बेष तहँ सोहा। मायापति दूतहि चह मोहा॥ जाइ पवनसुत नायउ माथा। लाग सो कहै राम गुन गाथा॥ २ ॥

rācchasa kapaṭa bēṣa tahaṃ sohā। māyāpati dūtahi caha mohā॥ jāi pavanasuta nāyau māthā। lāga so kahai rāma guna gāthā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
A demon was sitting there, disguised by deceit as a sage. He wanted to enchant the messenger of the Lord of illusion. Hanuman went to him and bowed his head. Then he began speaking of Rama's virtues.
होत महा रन रावन रामहिं। जितिहहिं राम न संसय या महिं॥ इहाँ भएँ मैं देखउँ भाई। ग्यानदृष्टि बल मोहि अधिकाई॥ ३ ॥

hota mahā rana rāvana rāmahiṃ। jitihahiṃ rāma na saṃsaya yā mahiṃ॥ ihāṃ bhaeṃ maiṃ dekhaum bhāī। gyānadṛṣṭi bala mohi adhikāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
[He said:] A great war is being fought between Ravana and Rama. There is no doubt that Rama will win. O brother, I am here and can see everything. I possess great power of spiritual insight.
मागा जल तेहिं दीन्ह कमंडल। कह कपि नहिं अघाउँ थोरें जल॥ सर मज्जन करि आतुर आवहु। दिच्छा देउँ ग्यान जेहिं पावहु॥ ४ ॥

māgā jala tehiṃ dīnha kamaṃḍala। kaha kapi nahiṃ aghāuṃ thoreṃ jala॥ sara majjana kari ātura āvahu। dicchā deūṃ gyāna jehiṃ pāvahu॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman asked him for water, and he gave him a kamandalu. Hanuman said, "I will not be satisfied with so little water." Then he said, "Bathed in the lake and come back quickly, and I will give you initiation, by which you may attain knowledge."
सर पैठत कपि पद गहा मकरीं तब अकुलान। मारी सो धरि दिव्य तनु चली गगन चढ़ि जान॥ ५७ ॥

sara paiṭhata kapi pada gahā makarīṃ taba akulāna। mārī so dhari divya tanu calī gagana caṛhi jāna॥ 57 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as Hanuman entered the lake, a crocodile in distress seized his foot. Hanuman killed her. Then she assumed a divine form and rose up into the sky on a celestial vehicle.
कपि तव दरस भइउँ निष्पापा। मिटा तात मुनिबर कर सापा॥ मुनि न होइ यह निसिचर घोरा। मानहु सत्य बचन कपि मोरा॥ १ ॥

kapi tava darasa bhaiuṃ niṣpāpā। miṭā tāta munibara kara sāpā॥ muni na hoi yaha nisichara ghorā। mānahu satya bacana kapi morā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
"O monkey, by seeing you I have become free from sin. O dear one, the curse of the great sage has been removed. O Kapi, this is not a sage; he is a dreadful demon. Believe my words to be true."
अस कहि गई अपछरा जबहीं। निसिचर निकट गयउ कपि तबहीं॥ कह कपि मुनि गुरदछिना लेहू। पाछें हमहिं मंत्र तुम्ह देहू॥ २ ॥

asa kahi gaī apacharā jabaṃhī। nisichara nikaṭa gayau kapi tabahīṃ॥ kaha kapi muni guradachinā lehū। pācheṃ hamahiṃ maṃtra tumha dehū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as the apsara departed after saying this, Hanuman went to the demon. Hanuman said, "O sage, first take your guru-dakshina. Afterwards, you may give me the mantra."
सिर लंगूर लपेटि पछारा। निज तनु प्रगटेसि मरती बारा॥ राम राम कहि छाड़ेसि प्राना। सुनि मन हरषि चलेउ हनुमाना॥ ३ ॥

sira laṃgūra lapeṭi pachārā। nija tanu pragaṭesi martī bārā॥ rāma rāma kahi chāḍhesi prānā। suni mana haraṣi caleu hanumānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Hanuman wrapped his tail around her head and threw her down. At the time of death she revealed her own form. She gave up her life while saying "Rama, Rama." Hearing this, Hanuman's heart rejoiced, and he departed.
देखा सैल न औषध चीन्हा। सहसा कपि उपारि गिरि लीन्हा॥ गहि गिरि निसि नभ धावत भयऊ। अवधपुरी ऊपर कपि गयऊ॥ ४ ॥

dekhā saila na auṣadha cīnhā। sahasā kapi upāri giri līnhā॥ gahi giri nisi nabha dhāvata bhayū। avadhapurī ūpara kapi gayū॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
They saw the mountain but could not identify the herbs. Then Hanuman suddenly lifted the whole mountain. Carrying the mountain, Hanuman raced through the sky at night and reached above Ayodhyapuri.
