काल पाइ मुनि सुनु सोइ राजा। भयउ निसाचर सहित समाजा॥ दस सिर ताहि बीस भुजदंडा। रावन नाम बीर बरिबंडा॥ १ ॥

kāla pāi muni sunu soi rājā। bhayau nisācara sahita samājā॥ dasa sira tāhi bīsa bhujadaṇḍā। rāvana nāma bīra baribaṇḍā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O sage, listen: in due time that same king was born as the demon Ravana, together with his family. He had ten heads and twenty arms, and he was a most formidable warrior.
भूप अनुज अरिमर्दन नामा। भयउ सो कुंभकरन बलधामा॥ सचिव जो रहा धरमरुचि जासू। भयउ बिमात्र बंधु लघु तासू॥ २ ॥

bhūpa anuja arimardana nāmā। bhayau so kuṃbhakaraṇa baladhāmā॥ saciva jo rahā dharamaruci jāsū। bhayau bimātra bandhu laghu tāsū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The king's younger brother named Arimardan became the mighty Kumbhakarna. The minister who remained, named Dharmaruchi, became Ravana's younger half-brother.
नाम बिभीषन जेहि जग जाना। बिष्नुभगत बिग्यान निधाना॥ रहे जे सुत सेवक नृप केरे। भए निसाचर घोर घनेरे॥ ३ ॥

nāma bibhīṣana jehi jaga jānā। biṣṇubhagata bigyāna nidhānā॥ rahe je suta sevaka nṛpa kere। bhae nisācara ghora ghanere॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
His name was Vibhishana, known throughout the world. He was a devotee of Vishnu and a treasure-house of knowledge and wisdom. Those who remained as the king's sons and servants all became dreadful demons.
कामरूप खल जिनस अनेका। कुटिल भयंकर बिगत बिबेका॥ कृपा रहित हिंसक सब पापी। बरनि न जाहिं बिस्व परितापी॥ ४ ॥

kāmarūpa khala jinas anekā। kuṭila bhayaṃkara bigata bibekā॥ kṛpā rahita hiṃsaka saba pāpī। barani na jāhiṃ bisva paritāpī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
They were of many forms and kinds, crooked, terrifying, and devoid of discernment. Without mercy, violent, and sinful, they tormented the entire world beyond description.
उपजे जदपि पुलस्त्यकुल पावन अमल अनूप। तदपि महीसुर श्राप बस भए सकल अघरूप॥ १७६ ॥

upaje jadapi pulastyakula pāvana amala anūpa। tadapi mahīsura śrāpa basa bhae sakala agharūpa॥ 176 ॥
Meaning:
Although they were born in the pure, spotless, incomparable line of the sage Pulastya, by the curse of the Brahmins they all became embodiments of sin.
कीन्ह बिबिध तप तीनिहुँ भाई। परम उग्र नहिं बरनि सो जाई॥ गयउ निकट तप देखि बिधाता। मागहु बर प्रसन्न मैं ताता॥ १ ॥

kīnha bibidha tapa tīnihuṃ bhāī। parama ugra nahiṃ barani so jāī॥ gayau nikaṭa tapa dekhi bidhātā। māgahu bara prasanna maiṃ tātā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The three brothers performed many kinds of severe austerities; their terrible penance cannot be described. Seeing their austerity, Brahma went near them and said, 'Ask for a boon, dear ones; I am pleased.'
करि बिनती पद गहि दससीसा। बोलेउ बचन सुनहु जगदीसा॥ हम काहू के मरहिं न मारें। बानर मनुज जाति दुइ बारें॥ २ ॥

kari binatī pada gahi dasasīsā। boleu bacana sunahu jagadīsā॥ hama kāhū ke marahiṃ na mārẽ। bānara manuja jāti dui bārẽ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana bowed and, clasping the Lord's feet, said: 'O Lord of the world, listen. Let us not be slain by anyone except monkeys and human beings—grant us this boon.'
एवमस्तु तुम्ह बड़ तप कीन्हा। मैं ब्रह्माँ मिलि तेहि बर दीन्हा॥ पुनि प्रभु कुंभकरन पहिं गयऊ। तेहि बिलोकि मन बिसमय भयऊ॥ ३ ॥

evamastu tumha baḍa tapa kīnha। maiṃ brahmāṃ mili tehi bara dīnhā॥ puni prabhu kuṃbhakaraṇa pahiṃ gayū। tehi biloki mana bismaya bhayau॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
[Shiva says:] 'So be it. You performed great austerity, and I, together with Brahma, granted that boon. Then the Lord went to Kumbhakarna. Seeing him, Brahma was filled with wonder.'
जौं एहिं खल नित करब अहारू। होइहि सब उजारि संसारू॥ सारद प्रेरि तासु मति फेरी। मागेसि नीद मास षट केरी॥ ४ ॥

jauṃ ehiṃ khala nita karaba ahārū। hoihi saba ujāri saṃsārū॥ sārada prēri tāsu mati pherī। māgesi nīda māsa ṣaṭ kerī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
If this villain were to eat every day, the whole world would be laid waste. Reflecting thus, Brahma, through Sarasvati's prompting, changed his mind, and as a result he asked for six months of sleep.
गए बिभीषन पास पुनि कहेउ पुत्र बर मागु। तेहिं मागेउ भगवंत पद कमल अमल अनुरागु॥ १७७ ॥

gae bibhīṣana pāsa puni kaheu putra bara māgu। tehiṃ māgeu bhagavaṃta pada kamala amala anurāgu॥ 177 ॥
Meaning:
Then Brahma went to Vibhishana and said, 'Ask for a boon, my son.' He asked for pure, stainless love for the lotus feet of the Lord.
तिन्हहि देइ बर ब्रह्म सिधाए। हरषित ते अपने गृह आए॥ मय तनुजा मंदोदरि नामा। परम सुंदरी नारि ललामा॥ १ ॥

tinhahi dei bara brahma sidhāe। haraṣita te apane gṛha āe॥ maya tanujā maṃdodari nāmā। parama sundarī nāri lalāmā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
After granting them boons, Brahma departed, and they returned to their homes rejoicing. The daughter of the demon Maya, named Mandodari, was supremely beautiful and the foremost among women.
सोइ मयँ दीन्हि रावनहि आनी। होइहि जातुधानपति जानी॥ हरषित भयउ नारि भलि पाई। पुनि दोउ बंधु बिआहेसि जाई॥ २ ॥

soi mayaṃ dīnhi rāvanahi ānī। hoihi jātudhānapati jānī॥ haraṣita bhayau nāri bhali pāī। puni dou baṃdhu biāhesi jāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Maya brought her and gave her to Ravana. He knew that this one would become the lord of the demons. Ravana was delighted to obtain such a fine bride, and then he went and arranged the marriage of the two brothers.
गिरि त्रिकूट एक सिंधु मझारी। बिधि निर्मित दुर्गम अति भारी॥ सोइ मय दानवँ बहुरि सँवारा। कनक रचित मनिभवन अपारा॥ ३ ॥

giri trikuṭa eka sindhu majhārī। bidhi nirmita durgama ati bhārī॥ soi maya dānavaṃ bahuri saṃvārā। kanaka racita manibhavana apārā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
In the midst of the ocean, on Mount Trikuta, stood a vast and formidable fortress made by Brahma. Maya the demon later adorned it again. It contained countless palaces made of gold and set with gems.
भोगावति जसि अहिकुल बासा। अमरावति जसि सक्रनिवासा॥ तिन्ह तें अधिक रम्य अति बंका। जग बिख्यात नाम तेहि लंका॥ ४ ॥

bhogāvati jasi ahikula bāsā। amarāvati jasi sakranivāsā॥ tinha teṃ adhika ramya ati baṃkā। jaga bikhyāta nāma tehi laṃkā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Just as Bhogavati is the city of the serpent race in the nether world and Amaravati is the city of Indra in heaven, that fortress was even more beautiful and splendid than those. In the world, it became famous by the name Lanka.
खाईं सिंधु गभीर अति चारिहुँ दिसि फिरि आव। कनक कोट मनिखचित दृढ़ बरनि न जाइ बनाव॥ १७८ (क) ॥

khāīṃ sindhu gabhīra ati cārihuṃ disi phiri āva। kanaka koṭa manikhacita dṛḍha barani na jāi banāva॥ 178 (a) ॥
Meaning:
It is surrounded on all four sides by a very deep moat of the ocean. That strong rampart of gold, studded with gems, is such that its workmanship cannot be described.
हरि प्रेरित जेहिं कलप जोइ जातुधानपति होइ। सूर प्रतापी अतुलबल दल समेत बस सोइ॥ १७८ (ख) ॥

hari prerita jehiṃ kalapa joi jātudhānapati hoi। sūra pratāpī atulabala dala sameta basa soi॥ 178 (b) ॥
Meaning:
By the Lord's will, in whatever age that demon becomes king, that very one—brave, glorious, and of incomparable strength—dwells there with his army.
रहे तहाँ निसिचर भट भारे। ते सब सुरन्ह समर संघारे॥ अब तहँ रहहिं सक्र के प्रेरे। रच्छक कोटि जच्छपति केरे॥ १ ॥

rahe tahāṃ nisichara bhaṭa bhāre। te saba suranha samara saṃghāre॥ aba tahaṃ rahahiṃ sakra ke prere। racchaka koṭi jacchapati kere॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
In the past, many mighty demon warriors lived there. The gods destroyed them all in battle. Now, by Indra's prompting, there live there the countless guardians of Kubera, the Yakshas.
दसमुख कतहुँ खबरि असि पाई। सेन साजि गढ़ घेरेसि जाई॥ देखि बिकट भट बड़ि कटकाई। जच्छ जीव लै गए पराई॥ २ ॥

dasamukha katahuṃ khabari asi pāī। sēna sāji gaṛha gheresi jāī॥ dekhi bikaṭa bhaṭa baṛi kaṭakāī। jaccha jīva lai gae parāī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
When Ravana received such news, he assembled his army and went to besiege the fortress. Seeing that formidable warrior and his great host, the Yakshas fled for their lives.
फिरि सब नगर दसानन देखा। गयउ सोच सुख भयउ बिसेषा॥ सुंदर सहज अगम अनुमानी। कीन्हि तहाँ रावन रजधानी॥ ३ ॥

phiri saba nagara dasānana dekhā। gayau soca sukha bhayau biśeṣā॥ sundara sahaja agama anumānī। kīnhi tahāṃ rāvana rajadhānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Then Ravana went about and inspected the whole city. His anxiety about the place vanished, and he felt great delight. Judging that city to be naturally beautiful and difficult of access to outsiders, Ravana established his capital there.
जेहि जस जोग बाँटि गृह दीन्हे। सुखी सकल रजनीचर कीन्हे॥ एक बार कुबेर पर धावा। पुष्पक जान जीति लै आवा॥ ४ ॥

jehi jasa joga bāṃṭi gṛha dīhne। sukhī sakala rajanīcara kīhne॥ eka bāra kubera para dhāvā। puṣpaka jāna jīti lai āvā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He distributed houses according to merit and made all the demons happy. Once he launched an attack on Kubera and brought back the Pushpaka विमान after defeating him.
कौतुकहीं कैलास पुनि लीन्हेसि जाइ उठाइ। मनहुँ तौलि निज बाहुबल चला बहुत सुख पाइ॥ १७९ ॥

kautukahīṃ kailāsa puni līnhesi jāi uṭhāi। manahuṃ tauli nija bāhubala calā bahuta sukha pāi॥ 179 ॥
Meaning:
Then, merely in sport, he went and lifted Mount Kailasa. It was as if he had weighed the strength of his own arms, and after much delight he went away from there.
सुख संपति सुत सेन सहाई। जय प्रताप बल बुद्धि बड़ाई॥ नित नूतन सब बाढ़त जाई। जिमि प्रतिलाभ लोभ अधिकाई॥ १ ॥

sukha saṃpati suta sena sahāī। jaya pratāpa bala buddhi baṛāī॥ nita nūtana saba bāṛhata jāī। jimi pratilābha lobha adhikāī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Happiness, wealth, sons, troops, allies, victory, glory, strength, intelligence, and greatness—all of these kept increasing anew, just as greed increases with every gain.
अतिबल कुंभकरन अस भ्राता। जेहि कहुँ नहिं प्रतिभट जग जाता॥ करइ पान सोवइ षट मासा। जागत होइ तिहूँ पुर त्रासा॥ २ ॥

atibala kumbhakarana asa bhrātā। jehi kahuṃ nahiṃ pratibhaṭa jaga jātā॥ karai pāna sovai ṣaṭa māsā। jāgata hoi tihūṃ pura trāsā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
His brother was like the immensely powerful Kumbhakarna, whose equal as a warrior had never been born in the world. He drank liquor and slept for six months at a time. Whenever he woke, terror spread through the three worlds.
जौं दिन प्रति अहार कर सोई। बिस्व बेगि सब चौपट होई॥ समर धीर नहिं जाइ बखाना। तेहि सम अमित बीर बलवाना॥ ३ ॥

jaũ dina prati ahāra kara soī। bisva begi saba caupaṭa hoī॥ samara dhīra nahiṃ jāi bakhānā। tehi sama amita bīra balavānā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
If he ate every day, the entire world would quickly be ruined. In battle, his courage could not be described. There were countless mighty warriors like him.
बारिदनाद जेठ सुत तासू। भट महुँ प्रथम लीक जग जासू॥ जेहि न होइ रन सनमुख कोई। सुरपुर नितहिं परावन होई॥ ४ ॥

bāridanāda jeṭha suta tāsū। bhaṭa mahuṃ prathama līka jaga jāsū॥ jehi na hoi rana sanmukha koī। surapura nitahiṃ parāvana hoī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Meghnada was Ravana's eldest son, foremost among the warriors of the world. No one could face him in battle. In heaven, there was constant alarm and scattering because of him.
कुमुख अकंपन कुलिसरद धूमकेतु अतिकाय। एक एक जग जीति सक ऐसे सुभट निकाय॥ १८० ॥

kumukha akampana kulisarada dhūmaketu atikāya। eka eka jaga jīti saka aise subhaṭa nikāya॥ 180 ॥
Meaning:
Besides these, there were many such warriors as Kumukh, Akampan, Kulisarad, Dhumaketu, and Atikaya, each of whom could conquer the whole world single-handedly.
कामरूप जानहिं सब माया। सपनेहुँ जिन्ह कें धरम न दाया॥ दसमुख बैठ सभाँ एक बारा। देखि अमित आपन परिवारा॥ १ ॥

kāmarūpa jānahiṃ saba māyā। sapanehuṃ jinha keṃ dharama na dāyā॥ dasamukha baiṭha sabhāṃ eka bārā। dekhi amita āpana parivārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
All of them could assume forms at will and knew demonic magic. They had no regard for compassion or righteousness, even in dreams. Once, while sitting in court, Ravana looked at his countless family members—.
सुत समूह जन परिजन नाती। गनै को पार निसाचर जाती॥ सेन बिलोकि सहज अभिमानी। बोला बचन क्रोध मद सानी॥ २ ॥

Meaning:
There were heaps upon heaps of sons, grandsons, relatives, and servants. As for all the races of demons, who could ever count them? Seeing his army, Ravana—naturally proud—spoke with words steeped in anger and pride.
सुनहु सकल रजनीचर जूथा। हमरे बैरी बिबुध बरूथा॥ ते सनमुख नहिं करहिं लराई। देखि सबल रिपु जाहिं पराई॥ ३ ॥

sunahu sakala rajanīcara jūthā। hamare bairī bibudha barūthā॥ te sanmukha nahiṃ karahiṃ larāī। dekhi sabala ripu jāhiṃ parāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Listen, all you hosts of demons! The gods are our enemies. They do not fight face to face. Seeing a strong foe, they flee.
तेन्ह कर मरन एक बिधि होई। कहउँ बुझाइ सुनहु अब सोई॥ द्विजभोजन मख होम सराधा। सब कै जाइ करहु तुम्ह बाधा॥ ४ ॥

tenha kara marana eka bidhi hoī। kahauṃ bujhāi sunahu aba soī॥ dvijabhojana makha homa sarādhā। saba kai jāi karahu tumha bādhā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
There is only one way they can be destroyed; I will explain it clearly. Listen now. Go and obstruct all the rites that nourish their power—feeding Brahmins, sacrifices, oblations, and ancestral offerings.
छुधा छीन बलहीन सुर सहजेहिं मिलिहहिं आइ। तब मारिहउँ कि छाड़िहउँ भली भाँति अपनाइ॥ १८१ ॥

chuḍhā chīna balahīna sura sahajehiṃ milihahiṃ āi। taba mārihauṃ ki chāṛihauṃ bhalī bhāṃti apanāi॥ 181 ॥
Meaning:
When the gods become weakened and powerless from hunger, they will come to us of their own accord. Then I shall either kill them or fully subdue them and let them go.
मेघनाद कहुँ पुनि हँकरावा। दीन्ही सिख बलु बयरु बढ़ावा॥ जे सुर समर धीर बलवाना। जिन्ह कें लरिबे कर अभिमाना॥ १ ॥

meghanāda kahuṃ puni haṃkarāvā। dīnhī sikha balu bayaru baṛhāvā॥ je sura samara dhīra balavānā। jinha keṃ laribe kara abhimānā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Then he called Meghnad again and instructed him, stirring up his strength and hostility. [He said:] O son, those gods who are brave and powerful in battle, and who take pride in fighting...
तिन्हहि जीति रन आनेसु बाँधी। उठि सुत पितु अनुसासन काँधी॥ एहि बिधि सबही अग्या दीन्ही। आपुनु चलेउ गदा कर लीन्ही॥ २ ॥

tinhahiṃ jīti rana ānesu bāṃdhī। uṭhi suta pitu anusāsana kāṃdhī॥ ehi bidhi sabahī agyā dīnhī। āpunu chaleu gadā kara līnhī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
He had them defeated in battle and brought bound. The son rose and took his father's command upon himself. In this way he gave orders to all and himself set out, mace in hand.
चलत दसानन डोलति अवनी। गर्जत गर्भ स्रवहिं सुर रवनी॥ रावन आवत सुनेउ सकोहा। देवन्ह तके मेरु गिरि खोहा॥ ३ ॥

calata dasānana ḍolati avanī। garjata garbha sravahiṃ sura ravanī॥ rāvana āvata suneu sakohā। devanha take meru giri khohā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
As Ravana moved, the earth trembled; at his roar, the wombs of the celestial women miscarried. Hearing that Ravana was coming in rage, the gods sought refuge in the caves of Mount Meru.
दिगपालन्ह के लोक सुहाए। सूने सकल दसानन पाए॥ पुनि पुनि सिंघनाद करि भारी। देइ देवतन्ह गारि पचारी॥ ४ ॥

digapālanha ke loka suhāe। sūne sakala dasānana pāe॥ puni puni siṃghanāda kari bhārī। dei devatanha gāri pacārī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The splendid worlds of the guardians of the directions appeared empty to Ravana. Again and again he roared like a lion and hurled abuses at the gods, challenging them.
रन मद मत्त फिरइ जग धावा। प्रतिभट खोजत कतहुँ न पावा॥ रबि ससि पवन बरुन धनधारी। अगिनि काल जम सब अधिकारी॥ ५ ॥

rana mada matta phirai jaga dhāvā। pratibhaṭa khojata katahuṃ na pāvā॥ rabi sasi pavana baruna dhanadhārī। agini kāla jama saba adhikārī॥ 5 ॥

Intoxicated with the pride of war, he roamed through the world seeking a worthy opponent, but found none. Sun, Moon, Wind, Varuna, Kubera, Fire, Time, Yama, and all the other powers and rulers...
किंनर सिद्ध मनुज सुर नागा। हठि सबही के पंथहिं लागा॥ ब्रह्मसृष्टि जहँ लगि तनुधारी। दसमुख बसबर्ती नर नारी॥ ६ ॥

kiṃnara siddha manuja sura nāgā। haṭhi sabahī ke panthahiṃ lāgā॥ brahmasṛṣṭi jahaṃ lagi tanudhārī। dasamukha basabartī nara nārī॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
Kinnaras, Siddhas, human beings, gods, and nāgas—he relentlessly pursued them all. As far as there were embodied beings in Brahma's creation, men and women alike, all became subject to Ravana.
भुजबल बिस्व बस्य करि राखेसि कोउ न सुतंत्र। मंडलीक मनि रावन राज करइ निज मंत्र॥ १८२ (क) ॥

bhujabala bisva basya kari rākhēsi kou na sutantra। maṃḍalīka mani rāvana rāja karai nija maṃtra॥ 182 (a) ॥
Meaning:
By the power of his arms he brought the whole world under his control and kept it so; he allowed no one to be independent. Thus Ravana, the jewel among mandalik kings, ruled according to his own will.
देव जच्छ गंधर्ब नर किंनर नाग कुमारि। जीति बरीं निज बाहुबल बहु सुंदर बर नारि॥ १८२ (ख) ॥

deva jachcha gaṃdharba nara kiṃnara nāga kumāri। jīti barīṃ nija bāhubala bahu suṃdara bara nāri॥ 182 (b) ॥
Meaning:
He conquered and married the beautiful princesses and noble women of gods, yakshas, gandharvas, humans, kinnaras, and nāgas by the strength of his arms.
इंद्रजीत सन जो कछु कहेऊ। सो सब जनु पहिलहिं करि रहेऊ॥ प्रथमहिं जिन्ह कहुँ आयसु दीन्हा। तिन्ह कर चरित सुनहु जो कीन्हा॥ १ ॥

iṃdrajīta sana jo kachu kaheu। so saba janu pahilahiṃ kari raheu॥ prathamahiṃ jinha kahuṃ āyasu dīnhā। tinha kara carita sunahu jo kīnhā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Whatever he said to Indrajit, it was as though he had already done it. Listen now to the deeds of those to whom he had first given orders.
देखत भीमरूप सब पापी। निसिचर निकर देव परितापी॥ करहिं उपद्रव असुर निकाया। नाना रूप धरहिं करि माया॥ २ ॥

dekhata bhīmarūpa saba pāpī। nisicara nikara deva paritāpī॥ karahiṃ upadrava asura nikāyā। nānā rūpa dharahiṃ kari māyā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
All the hosts of demons were fearsome to behold, sinful, and tormentors of the gods. The bands of asuras caused havoc and assumed many forms through illusion.
जेहि बिधि होइ धर्म निर्मूला। सो सब करहिं बेद प्रतिकूला॥ जेहिं जेहिं देस धेनु द्विज पावहिं। नगर गाउँ पुर आगि लगावहिं॥ ३ ॥

jehi bidhi hoi dharma nirmūlā। so saba karahiṃ beda pratikūlā॥ jehiṃ jehiṃ desa dhenu dvija pāvahiṃ। nagara gāuṃ pura āgi lagāvahiṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Whatever uprooted धर्म, they did that; they acted in opposition to the Vedas. Wherever they found cows and brahmins, they set fire to that city, village, or town.
सुभ आचरन कतहुँ नहिं होई। देव बिप्र गुरु मान न कोई॥ नहिं हरिभगति जग्य तप ग्याना। सपनेहुँ सुनिअ न बेद पुराना॥ ४ ॥

subha ācarana katahuṃ nahīṃ hoī। deva bipra guru māna na koī॥ nahīṃ haribhagati jagya tapa gyānā। sapanehuṃ suni'a na beda purānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Because of them, no virtuous conduct was found anywhere. No honor was shown to gods, brahmins, or gurus. There was no devotion to Hari, no sacrifice, no austerity, and no knowledge. The Vedas and Puranas were not even heard in dreams.
जप जोग बिरागा तप मख भागा श्रवन सुनइ दससीसा। आपुनु उठि धावइ रहै न पावइ धरि सब घालइ खीसा॥ अस भ्रष्ट अचारा भा संसारा धर्म सुनिअ नहिं काना। तेहि बहुबिधि त्रासइ देस निकासइ जो कह बेद पुराना॥

japa joga birāgā tapa makha bhāgā śravana sunai dasa sīsā। āpunu uṭhi dhāvai rahai na pāvai dhari saba ghāla'i khīsā॥ asa bhraṣṭa acārā bhā saṃsārā dharma suni'a nahīṃ kānā। tehi bahubidhi trāsai desa nikāsai jo kaha beda purānā॥
Meaning:
If even the mention of japa, yoga, dispassion, austerity, or a share in sacrifices reached Ravana's ears, he would rise at once and run. Nothing would be left; he would seize everything and destroy it. The world had become so corrupt that धर्म was not heard even by the ears; anyone who spoke of the Vedas and Puranas would be terrorized in many ways and expelled from the land.
बरनि न जाइ अनीति घोर निसाचर जो करहिं। हिंसा पर अति प्रीति तिन्ह के पापहि कवनि मिति॥ १८३ ॥

barani na jāi anīti ghora nisācara jo karahiṃ। hiṃsā para ati prīti tinha ke pāpahi kavani miti॥ 183 ॥
Meaning:
The terrible injustice committed by those night-roaming demons cannot be described. Those who are deeply attached to violence—what limit can there be to their sins?
बाढ़े खल बहु चोर जुआरा। जे लंपट परधन परदारा॥ मानहिं मातु पिता नहिं देवा। साधुन्ह सन करवावहिं सेवा॥ १ ॥

bāṛhe khala bahu cora juārā। je laṃpaṭa paradhana paradārā॥ mānahiṃ mātu pitā nahīṃ devā। sādhunhaṃ sana karavāvahiṃ sevā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Vile men, many thieves and gamblers, and libertines lusting after others' wealth and wives increased greatly. People no longer honored mother, father, or the gods, and made the ascetics serve them.
जिन्ह के यह आचरन भवानी। ते जानेहु निसिचर सब प्रानी॥ अतिसय देखि धर्म कै ग्लानी। परम सभीत धरा अकुलानी॥ २ ॥

jinha ke yaha ācarana bhavānī। te jānēhu nisicara saba prānī॥ atisaya dekhi dharma kai glānī। parama sabhīta dharā akulānī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
[Lord Shiva says:] O Bhavani, those whose conduct is like this should be known as demons, whatever living beings they may be. Seeing such utter decline of धर्म, the earth became extremely frightened and distressed.
गिरि सरि सिंधु भार नहिं मोही। जस मोहि गरुअ एक परद्रोही॥ सकल धर्म देखइ बिपरीता। कहि न सकइ रावन भय भीता॥ ३ ॥

giri sari sindhu bhāra nahiṃ mohī। jasa mohi garua eka paradrohī॥ sakala dharma dekhai biparītā। kahi na sakai rāvana bhaya bhītā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
[She thought:] The burden of mountains, rivers, and oceans does not seem as heavy to me as one who seeks to harm others. The earth sees all righteousness turned upside down, but terrified by Ravana, she cannot speak.
धेनु रूप धरि हृदयँ बिचारी। गई तहाँ जहँ सुर मुनि झारी॥ निज संताप सुनाएसि रोई। काहू तें कछु काज न होई॥ ४ ॥

dhenu rūpa dhari hṛdayaṃ bichārī। gaī tahāṃ jahaṃ sura muni jhārī॥ nija santāpa sunāesi roī। kāhū teṃ kachu kāja na hoī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
At last, thinking it over in her heart, the Earth assumed the form of a cow and went to where the gods and sages were hiding. Weeping, she told them of her suffering, but nothing could be done by anyone.
