Earth and the Gods Cry for Help
Afflicted by Ravana's tyranny, the Earth laments in the form of a cow. The gods join Brahma and pray to the Lord for relief and protection.

सुर मुनि गंधर्बा मिलि करि सर्बा गे बिरंचि के लोका। सँग गोतनुधारी भूमि बिचारी परम बिकल भय सोका॥ ब्रह्माँ सब जाना मन अनुमाना मोर कछू न बसाई। जा करि तैं दासी सो अबिनासी हमरेउ तोर सहाई॥
Transliteration (IAST)
sura muni gaṃdharbā mili kari sarbā ge biraṃci ke lokā। saṅga gotanudhārī bhūmi bichārī parama bikala bhaya sokā॥ brahmāṃ saba jānā mana anumānā mora kachū na basāī। jā kari taiṃ dāsī so abināsī hamareu tora sahāī॥
Meaning:
Then the gods, sages, and gandharvas all went together to Brahma's world. The distressed Earth, bearing the form of a cow, went with them, overwhelmed by fear and sorrow. Brahma understood everything. He reasoned in his heart that nothing was in his power. [Then he said to Earth:] The imperishable Lord to whom you are a servant is our helper as well as yours.
धरनि धरहि मन धीर कह बिरंचि हरि पद सुमिरु। जानत जन की पीर प्रभु भंजिहि दारुन बिपति॥ १८४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
dharani dharahi mana dhīra kaha biraṃci hari pada sumiru। jānata jana kī pīra prabhu bhaṃjihi dārun bipati॥ 184 ॥
Meaning:
Brahma said: O Earth, be steadfast in your mind and remember the feet of Shri Hari. The Lord knows the pain of His devotees; He will destroy your terrible calamity.
बैठे सुर सब करहिं बिचारा। कहँ पाइअ प्रभु करिअ पुकारा॥ पुर बैकुंठ जान कह कोई। कोउ कह पयनिधि बस प्रभु सोई॥ १ ॥

baiṭhe sur sab karahiṃ bicārā। kahã pāia prabhu kariā pukārā॥ pur baikunṭha jāna kah koī। kou kah payanidhi bas prabhu soī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The gods sat together and deliberated: "Where shall we find the Lord so that we may call out to Him there?" Some said, "He may be found in Vaikuntha"; others said, "He surely dwells in the ocean of milk."
जाके हृदयँ भगति जसि प्रीती। प्रभु तहँ प्रगट सदा तेहिं रीती॥ तेहिं समाज गिरिजा मैं रहेऊँ। अवसर पाइ बचन एक कहेऊँ॥ २ ॥

jāke hṛdayã bhagati jasi prīti। prabhu tahã pragaṭa sadā tehiṃ rīti॥ tehiṃ samāja girijā maiṃ raheūṃ। avasara pāi bacana eka kaheūṃ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
In whatever heart there is devotion and love, the Lord manifests there forever in that very way. O Girija, I was also in that assembly. Having found the occasion, I spoke one word.
हरि ब्यापक सर्बत्र समाना। प्रेम तें प्रगट होहिं मैं जाना॥ देस काल दिसि बिदिसिहु माहीं। कहहु सो कहाँ जहाँ प्रभु नाहीं॥ ३ ॥

hari vyāpaka sarbatra samānā। premã te pragaṭa hohiṃ maiṃ jānā॥ desa kāla disi bidisihu māhīṃ। kahahu so kahã jahã prabhu nāhĩ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
I know that Hari is all-pervading, equal everywhere; through love He becomes manifest. Tell me, in what country, time, direction, or region is there any place where the Lord is not?
अग जगमय सब रहित बिरागी। प्रेम तें प्रभु प्रगटइ जिमि आगी॥ मोर बचन सब के मन माना। साधु साधु करि ब्रह्म बखाना॥ ४ ॥

aga jagamaya saba rahita birāgī। premã te prabhu pragaṭai jimi āgī॥ mora bacana saba ke mana mānā। sādhu sādhu kari brahma bakhānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
He is all-pervading, the universe itself, yet detached from all; through love the Lord appears, as fire does. My words pleased everyone’s mind. Brahma praised them, saying, "Well said, well said."
सुनि बिरंचि मन हरष तन पुलकि नयन बह नीर। अस्तुति करत जोरि कर सावधान मतिधीर॥ १८५ ॥

suni birañci mana haraṣa tana pulaki nayana baha nīra। astuti karata jori kara sāvadhāna matidhīra॥ 185 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing this, Brahma was delighted; his body thrilled and tears flowed from his eyes. Then the wise Brahma, with joined palms, began to praise.
जय जय सुरनायक जन सुखदायक प्रनतपाल भगवंता। गो द्विज हितकारी जय असुरारी सिंधुसुता प्रिय कंता॥ पालन सुर धरनी अद्भुत करनी मरम न जानइ कोई। जो सहज कृपाला दीनदयाला करउ अनुग्रह सोई॥ १ ॥

jaya jaya suranāyaka jana sukhadāyaka pranatapāla bhagavaṃtā। go dvija hitakārī jaya asurārī sindhusutā priya kaṃtā॥ pālana sura dharanī adbhuta karaṇī marama na jāna-i koī। jo sahaja kṛpālā dīnadayālā karau anugraha soī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Victory, victory to the Lord of the gods, giver of joy to His devotees, protector of those who seek refuge! Victory to You, benefactor of cows and Brahmins, destroyer of the demons, beloved consort of the daughter of the ocean! Sustainer of the gods and the earth, Your deeds are wondrous; no one knows their mystery. You are naturally compassionate and kind to the lowly; may You show grace to us.
जय जय अबिनासी सब घट बासी ब्यापक परमानंदा। अबिगत गोतीतं चरित पुनीतं मायारहित मुकुंदा॥ जेहि लागि बिरागी अति अनुरागी बिगत मोह मुनिबृंदा। निसि बासर ध्यावहिं गुनगन गावहिं जयति सच्चिदानंदा॥ २ ॥

jaya jaya abināsī saba ghaṭa bāsī vyāpaka paramānandā। avigata gotītaṃ carita punītaṃ māyārahita mukundā॥ jehi lāgi birāgī ati anurāgī vigata moha munibṛndā। nisi bāsara dhyāvahiṃ gunagana gāvahiṃ jayati saccidānandā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Victory, victory to the imperishable one, dweller in every heart, all-pervading, embodiment of supreme bliss. Unmanifest, beyond the guṇas, pure in deed, free from Māyā, Mukunda! For whose sake the dispassionate yet intensely devoted sages, free from delusion, meditate day and night and sing the multitudes of Your virtues—victory to You, who are being itself, consciousness, and bliss.
जेहिं सृष्टि उपाई त्रिबिध बनाई संग सहाय न दूजा। सो करउ अघारी चिंत हमारी जानिअ भगति न पूजा॥ जो भव भय भंजन मुनि मन रंजन गंजन बिपति बरूथा। मन बच क्रम बानी छाड़ि सयानी सरन सकल सुरजूथा॥ ३ ॥

jehiṃ sṛṣṭi upāī tribidha banāī saṅga sahāya na dūjā। so karau aghārī cintā hamārī jānija bhagati na pūjā॥ jo bhava bhaya bhañjana muni mana rañjana ganjana bipati barūthā। mana bacana krama bānī chāṛi sayānī saraṇa sakala surajūthā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
You created the universe and fashioned it in three modes, without any companion or helper. May that Destroyer of sins attend to our distress; we know neither devotion nor worship. You who remove the fear of becoming, delight the minds of sages, and destroy host after host of calamities—abandoning cleverness in thought, word, and deed, all the gods have come to Your shelter.
सारद श्रुति सेषा रिषय असेषा जा कहुँ कोउ नहिं जाना। जेहि दीन पिआरे बेद पुकारे द्रवउ सो श्रीभगवाना॥ भव बारिधि मंदर सब बिधि सुंदर गुनमंदिर सुखपुंजा। मुनि सिद्ध सकल सुर परम भयातुर नमत नाथ पद कंजा॥ ४ ॥

sārada śruti seṣā riṣaya aśeṣā jā kahuṃ kou nahiṃ jānā। jehi dīna piāre beda pukāre dravau so śrībhagavānā॥ bhava bāridhi mandara saba bidhi sundara gunamandira sukhapuñjā। muni siddha sakala sura parama bhayātura namata nātha pada kañjā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O Sarasvati, the Vedas, Shesha, and all the sages—none of them knows You. The Vedas proclaim that You are dear to the humble; may that Lord Sri Bhagavan have mercy. O Lord, ocean of existence, Mount Mandara for churning it in every way, beautiful in every aspect, abode of virtues and a treasure of joy—sages, siddhas, and all gods, struck by fear, bow at Your lotus feet.
जानि सभय सुर भूमि सुनि बचन समेत सनेह। गगनगिरा गंभीर भइ हरनि सोक संदेह॥ १८६ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
jāni sabhaya sura bhūmi suni bacana sameta saneha। gagana girā gambhīra bhaī harani soka saṃdeha॥ 186 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the gods and the earth frightened, and hearing their loving words, a grave voice from the sky spoke, dispelling sorrow and doubt.
