सुंदर बन कुसुमित अति सोभा। गुंजत मधुप निकर मधु लोभा॥ कंद मूल फल पत्र सुहाए। भए बहुत जब ते प्रभु आए ॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
suṃdara bana kusumita ati sobhā। guṃjata madhupa nikara madhu lobhā॥ kanda mūla phala patra suhāe। bhae bahuta jaba te prabhu āe॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The beautiful forest is in full bloom and अत्यन्त splendid. A swarm of bees hums there, drawn by the lure of honey. Since the Lord arrived, the forest has become abundant with lovely roots, fruits, and leaves.
देखि मनोहर सैल अनूपा। रहे तहँ अनुज सहित सुरभूपा॥ मधुकर खग मृग तनु धरि देवा। करहिं सिद्ध मुनि प्रभु कै सेवा॥ २ ॥

dekhi manohara saila anūpā। rahe tahaṃ anuja sahita surabhūpā॥ madhukara khaga mṛga tanu dhari devā। karahiṃ siddha muni prabhu kai sevā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the lovely and incomparable mountain, Lord Rama, the sovereign of the gods, stayed there with His younger brother. Gods, siddhas, and sages took the forms of bees, birds, and beasts and began to serve the Lord.
मंगलरूप भयउ बन तब ते। कीन्ह निवास रमापति जब ते॥ फटिक सिला अति सुभ्र सुहाई। सुख आसीन तहाँ द्वौ भाई॥ ३ ॥

maṃgalarūpa bhayau bana taba te। kīnha nivāsa ramāpati jaba te॥ phaṭika silā ati subhra suhāī। sukha āsīna tahāṃ dvau bhāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Since Ramapati, Lord Rama, made His dwelling there, the forest became an embodiment of auspiciousness. There is a very bright and beautiful crystal slab, upon which the two brothers sit in comfort.
कहत अनुज सन कथा अनेका। भगति बिरति नृपनीति बिबेका॥ बरषा काल मेघ नभ छाए। गरजत लागत परम सुहाए॥ ४ ॥

kahata anuja sana kathā anekā। bhagati birati nṛpanīti bibekā॥ baraṣā kāla megha nabha chāe। garjata lāgata parama suhāe॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Lord Rama speaks to His younger brother Lakshmana on many topics—devotion, renunciation, kingship, and wisdom. In the rainy season, the clouds spread across the sky and their rumbling sounds become especially lovely.
लछिमन देखु मोर गन नाचत बारिद पेखि। गृही बिरतिरत हरष जस बिष्नुभगत कहुँ देखि॥ १३ ॥

lachhiman dekhu mora gana nācata bārida peki। gṛhī biratirata haraṣa jasa biṣṇubhagata kahuṃ dekhi॥ 13 ॥
Meaning:
[Lord Rama said:] 'Lakshmana, look! A flock of peacocks is dancing on seeing the clouds. Just as householders devoted to renunciation rejoice on seeing a devotee of Vishnu.'
घन घमंड नभ गरजत घोरा। प्रिया हीन डरपत मन मोरा॥ दामिनि दमक रह न घन माहीं। खल कै प्रीति जथा थिर नाहीं॥ १ ॥

ghana ghamanda nabha garajata ghorā। priyā hīna ḍarapata mana morā॥ dāmini damaka raha na ghana māhīṃ। khala kai prīti jathā thira nāhīṃ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The proud clouds are thundering fiercely in the sky, and my heart trembles in the absence of my beloved. Lightning does not stay fixed within the clouds, just as the affection of the wicked is never steady.
बरषहिं जलद भूमि निअराएँ। जथा नवहिं बुध बिद्या पाएँ॥ बूँद अघात सहहिं गिरि कैसें। खल के बचन संत सह जैसें॥ २ ॥

baraṣahiṃ jalada bhūmi niarāeṃ। jathā navahiṃ budha bidyā pāeṃ॥ būṃda aghāta sahahiṃ giri kaisẽ। khala ke bacana santa saha jaisẽ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The clouds descend close to the earth and pour down their rain, as the wise become humble after gaining learning. Just as mountains bear the impact of falling drops, saints bear the words of the wicked.
छुद्र नदीं भरि चलीं तोराई। जस थोरेहुँ धन खल इतराई॥ भूमि परत भा ढाबर पानी। जनु जीवहि माया लपटानी॥ ३ ॥

chudra nadīṃ bhari calīṃ torāī। jasa thorehuṃ dhana khala itarāī॥ bhūmi parata bhā ḍhābara pānī। janu jīvahi māyā lapaṭānī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
The little rivers, swollen full, rush along breaking their banks, just as the wicked grow arrogant even with little wealth. As soon as the water falls on the ground, it becomes muddy, as though illusion has clung to the pure soul.
समिटि समिटि जल भरहिं तलावा। जिमि सदगुन सज्जन पहिं आवा॥ सरिता जल जलनिधि महुँ जाई। होइ अचल जिमि जिव हरि पाई॥ ४ ॥

samiṭi samiṭi jala bharahiṃ talāvā। jimi sadaguna sajjana pahiṃ āvā॥ saritā jala jalanidhi mahuṃ jāī। hoi acala jimi jiva hari pāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Water gathers and fills the ponds, just as virtues come one by one to a noble person. River water becomes still when it reaches the ocean, just as the soul becomes steadfast upon attaining Hari.
हरित भूमि तृन संकुल समुझि परहिं नहिं पंथ। जिमि पाखंड बाद तें गुप्त होहिं सदग्रंथ॥ १४ ॥

harita bhūmi tṛna saṃkula samujhi parahiṃ nahiṃ pantha। jimi pākhaṃḍa bāda teṃ gupta hohiṃ sadagrantha॥ 14 ॥
Meaning:
The earth has turned green and thick with grass, so the paths are no longer visible. Likewise, when heresy spreads, the true scriptures are hidden from view.
दादुर धुनि चहु दिसा सुहाई। बेद पढ़हिं जनु बटु समुदाई॥ नव पल्लव भए बिटप अनेका। साधक मन जस मिलें बिबेका॥ १ ॥

dādura dhuni cahu disā suhāī। beda paḍhahiṃ janu baṭu samudāī॥ nava pallava bhae biṭapa anekā। sādhaka mana jasa mileṃ bibekā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The croaking of frogs sounds pleasant in all four directions, as though a company of students were reciting the Vedas. Many trees have sprouted new leaves, and they glow with fresh beauty, like a seeker’s mind when it has gained discernment.
अर्क जवास पात बिनु भयऊ। जस सुराज खल उद्यम गयऊ॥ खोजत कतहुँ मिलइ नहिं धूरी। करइ क्रोध जिमि धरमहि दूरी॥ २ ॥

arka javāsa pāta binu bhayau। jasa surāja khala udyama gayau॥ khojata katahuṃ milai nahiṃ dhūrī। karai krodha jimi dharamahi dūrī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The ark and jawasa plants have become leafless, just as the efforts of the wicked fail under good rule. Dust cannot be found anywhere; anger drives dharma far away.
ससि संपन्न सोह महि कैसी। उपकारी कै संपति जैसी॥ निसि तम घन खद्योत बिराजा। जनु दंभिन्ह कर मिला समाजा॥ ३ ॥

sasi saṃpanna soha mahi kaisī। upakārī kai saṃpati jaisī॥ nisi tama ghana khadyota birājā। janu daṃbhinha kara milā samājā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
How beautifully the earth shines, rich with grain, like the wealth of a benefactor. In the dense darkness of night, fireflies gleam, as if a company of the arrogant has gathered there.
महाबृष्टि चलि फूटि किआरीं। जिमि सुतंत्र भएँ बिगरहिं नारीं॥ कृषी निरावहिं चतुर किसाना। जिमि बुध तजहिं मोह मद माना॥ ४ ॥

mahābṛṣṭi cali phūṭi kiārīṃ। jimi sutantra bhaeṃ bigarahiṃ nārīṃ॥ kṛṣī nirāvahiṃ catura kisānā। jimi budha tajahiṃ moha mada mānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
The heavy rain has made the garden beds burst open, just as women become disorderly when left unchecked. Skilled farmers weed the fields, just as the wise cast off delusion, pride, and arrogance.
देखिअत चक्रबाक खग नाहीं। कलिहि पाइ जिमि धर्म पराहीं॥ ऊषर बरषइ तृन नहिं जामा। जिमि हरिजन हियँ उपज न कामा॥ ५ ॥

dekhiata cakrabāka khaga nāhīṃ। kalihi pāi jimi dharma parāhīṃ॥ ūṣara baraṣai tṛna nahiṃ jāmā। jimi harijana hiyaṃ upaja na kāmā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
The chakravak birds are nowhere to be seen, just as dharma flees in the age of Kali. Rain may fall on barren ground, yet no grass grows there. Likewise, desire does not arise in the hearts of the devotees of Hari.
बिबिध जंतु संकुल महि भ्राजा। प्रजा बाढ़ जिमि पाइ सुराजा॥ जहँ तहँ रहे पथिक थकि नाना। जिमि इंद्रिय गन उपजें ग्याना॥ ६ ॥

bibidha jantu saṃkula mahi bhrājā। prajā bāṛha jimi pāi surājā॥ jahaṃ tahaṃ rahe pathika thaki nānā। jimi indriya gana upajeṃ gyānā॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
The earth shines, filled with countless kinds of creatures, just as a people flourishes under good rule. Travelers rest, weary, here and there, just as the senses grow still when knowledge arises.
कबहुँ प्रबल बह मारुत जहँ तहँ मेघ बिलाहिं। जिमि कपूत के उपजें कुल सद्धर्म नसाहिं॥ १५ (क) ॥

kabahuṃ prabala baha māruta jahaṃ tahaṃ megha bilāhiṃ। jimi kapūta ke upajeṃ kula saddharma nasāhiṃ॥ 15 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Sometimes a strong wind blows and scatters the clouds here and there. Likewise, when a bad son is born, the noble dharma of the family is destroyed.
कबहुँदिवस महँ निबिड़ तम कबहुँक प्रगट पतंग। बिनसइउपजइ ग्यानजिमि पाइ कुसंग सुसंग॥ १५ (ख) ॥

kabahuṃdivasa mahaṃ nibiḍa tama kabahuṃka pragaṭa pataṃga। binasaiupajai gyānajimi pāi kusanga susanga॥ 15 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Sometimes daytime is covered in dense darkness, and sometimes the sun appears. Likewise, knowledge is lost in bad company and arises in good company.
