Tara's Lament, Rama's Counsel, Sugriva's Coronation, and Angada as Crown Prince

राम बालि निज धाम पठावा। नगर लोग सब ब्याकुल धावा॥ नाना बिधि बिलाप कर तारा। छूटे केस न देह सँभारा॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
rāma bāli nija dhāma paṭhāvā। nagara loga saba byākula dhāvā॥ nānā bidhi bilāpa kara tārā। chūṭe kesa na deha saṃbhārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Rama sent Bali to His own abode. All the people of the city rushed in distress. Bali's wife Tara began to lament in many ways; her hair was undone, and she had no control over her body.
तारा बिकल देखि रघुराया। दीन्ह ग्यान हरि लीन्ही माया॥ छिति जल पावक गगन समीरा। पंच रचित अति अधम सरीरा॥ २ ॥

tārā bikala dekhi raghurāyā। dīnha gyāna hari līnhī māyā॥ chiti jala pāvaka gagana samīrā। pañca racita ati adhama sarīrā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing Tara distressed, Raghu's Lord gave her knowledge and removed her delusion. He said: Earth, water, fire, sky, and air—these five elements fashion this exceedingly lowly body.
प्रगट सो तनु तव आगें सोवा। जीव नित्य केहि लगि तुम्ह रोवा॥ उपजा ग्यान चरन तब लागी। लीन्हेसि परम भगति बर मागी॥ ३ ॥

pragaṭa so tanu tava āgeṃ sovā। jīva nitya kehi lagi tumha rovā॥ upajā gyāna carana taba lāgī। līnhesi parama bhagati bara māgī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
That body lies plainly before you, and the soul is eternal. Then for whom are you weeping? When knowledge arose, she bowed at the Lord's feet and asked for the boon of supreme devotion.
उमा दारु जोषित की नाईं। सबहि नचावत रामु गोसाईं॥ तब सुग्रीवहि आयसु दीन्हा। मृतक कर्म बिधिवत सब कीन्हा॥ ४ ॥

umā dāru joṣita kī nāīṃ। sabahi nacāvata rāmu gosāīṃ॥ taba sugrīvahi āyasu dīnhā। mṛtaka karma bidhivata saba kīnhā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Shiva says: O Uma, Lord Rama makes everyone dance like a wooden doll. Then Rama gave Sugriva the command, and all the funeral rites for Bali were performed properly.
राम कहा अनुजहि समुझाई। राज देहु सुग्रीवहि जाई॥ रघुपति चरन नाइ करि माथा। चले सकल [प्रेरित रघुनाथा॥ ५ ॥

rāma kahā anujahi samujhāī। rāja dehu sugrīvahi jāī॥ raghupati carana nāi kari māthā। cale sakala [prerita raghunāthā॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Then Lord Rama explained to His younger brother Lakshmana and said, 'Go and give the kingdom to Sugriva.' Bowing their heads at the feet of Raghu's Lord, all departed, impelled by Raghu's Lord.
लछिमन तुरत बोलाए पुरजन बिप्र समाज। राजु दीन्ह सुग्रीव कहँ अंगद कहँ जुबराज॥ ११ ॥

lachhiman turata bolāe purajana bipra samāja। rāju dīnh sugrīva kahaṃ aṃgada kahaṃ jubarāja॥ 11 ॥
Meaning:
Lakshmana at once summoned the city people and the assembly of Brahmins, and in their presence granted the kingdom to Sugriva and the crown-prince's office to Angad.
उमा राम सम हित जग माहीं। गुरु पितु मातु बंधु प्रभु नाहीं॥ सुर नर मुनि सब कै यह रीती। स्वारथ लागि करहिं सब प्रीती॥ १ ॥

umā rāma sama hita jaga māhīṃ। guru pitu mātu baṃdhu prabhu nāhīṃ॥ sura nara muni saba kai yaha rīti। svāratha lāgi karahiṃ saba prīti॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
O Uma, in this world none is as beneficent as Rama—neither guru, father, mother, brother, nor lord. This is the way of gods, men, and sages: they all form bonds only for selfish gain.
बालि त्रास ब्याकुल दिन राती। तन बहु ब्रन चिंताँ जर छाती॥ सोइ सुग्रीव कीन्ह कपिराऊ। अति कृपाल रघुबीर सुभाऊ॥ २ ॥

bāli trāsa byākula dina rātī। tana bahu brana cintāṃ jara chātī॥ soi sugrīva kīnha kapirāū। ati kṛpāla raghubīra subhāū॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
The very Sugriva who was tormented day and night by fear of Bali, whose body was full of wounds and whose heart burned with anxiety, was made king of the monkeys. Rama's nature is supremely compassionate.
जानतहूँ अस प्रभु परिहरहीं। काहे न बिपति जाल नर परहीं॥ पुनि सुग्रीवहि लीन्ह बोलाई। बहु प्रकार नृपनीति सिखाई॥ ३ ॥

jānatahūṃ asa prabhu pariharahīṃ। kāhe na bipati jāla nara parahīṃ॥ puni sugrīvahi līnha bolāī। bahu prakāra nṛpanīti sikhāī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Those who knowingly abandon such a Lord—why should they not fall into the net of disaster? Then Rama called Sugriva back and instructed him in statecraft in many ways.
कह प्रभु सुनु सुग्रीव हरीसा। पुर न जाउँ दस चारि बरीसा॥ गत ग्रीषम बरषा रितु आई। रहिहउँ निकट सैल पर छाई॥ ४ ॥

kaha prabhu sunu sugrīva harīsā। pura na jāuṃ dasa cāri barīsā॥ gata grīṣma baraṣā ritu āī। rahihauṃ nikaṭa saila para chāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Then the Lord said, 'Listen, Sugriva, lord of the monkeys: I will not go to the city for fourteen years. Summer has passed, and the rainy season has arrived. So I shall remain nearby, sheltered on the mountain.'
अंगद सहित करहु तुम्ह राजू। संतत हृदयँ धरेहु मम काजू॥ जब सुग्रीव भवन फिरि आए। रामु प्रबरषन गिरि पर छाए॥ ५ ॥

aṃgada sahita karahu tumha rājū। santata hṛdayaṃ dharehu mama kājū॥ jaba sugrīva bhavana phiri āe। rāmu pravarṣana giri para chāe॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
You and Angad rule the kingdom together. Keep my task always in your heart. Thereafter, when Sugriva returned home, Rama stayed on Mount Pravarshana.
प्रथमहिं देवन्ह गिरि गुहा राखेउ रुचिर बनाइ। राम कृपानिधि कछु दिन बास करहिंगे आइ॥ १२ ॥

prathamahiṃ devanhaṃ giri guhā rākheu rucira banāi। rāma kṛpānidhi kachu dina bāsa karahiṃge āi॥ 12 ॥
Meaning:
At the very beginning, the gods had made a beautiful cave in the mountain ready and prepared, thinking that the treasure of mercy, Rama, would come and stay here for a few days.
