The Lord's Promise to Incarnate
Hearing the gods' plea, the Lord assures them that He will incarnate in the line of Raghu to destroy adharma. His promise fills all with peace and hope.

जनि डरपहु मुनि सिद्ध सुरेसा। तुम्हहि लागि धरिहउँ नर बेसा॥ अंसन्ह सहित मनुज अवतारा। लेहउँ दिनकर बंस उदारा॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
jani ḍarapahu muni siddha suresā। tumhahi lāgi dharihauṃ nara besā॥ aṃsanha sahita manuja avatārā। lehauṃ dinakara baṃsa udārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Do not fear, O sages, perfected beings, and lords of the gods. For your sake I shall take the form of a human being, and I shall be born with my divine portions in the noble Solar dynasty.
कस्यप अदिति महातप कीन्हा। तिन्ह कहुँ मैं पूरब बर दीन्हा॥ ते दसरथ कौसल्या रूपा। कोसलपुरीं प्रगट नरभूपा॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
kasyapa aditi mahātapa kīnhā। tinh kahũ maiṃ pūrab bara dīnhā॥ te dasaratha kausalyā rūpā। kosalapurīṃ pragaṭa narabhūpā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Kashyapa and Aditi performed great austerities; I had already granted them the boon. They have appeared in the forms of Dasharatha and Kausalya as the sovereigns of Kosala.
तिन्ह कें गृह अवतरिहउँ जाई। रघुकुल तिलक सो चारिउ भाई॥ नारद बचन सत्य सब करिहउँ। परम सक्ति समेत अवतरिहउँ॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
tinh keṃ gṛha avatarihauṃ jāī। raghukula tilaka so cāriu bhāī॥ nārada bacana satya saba karihauṃ। parama sakti sameta avatarihauṃ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
I shall go and be born in their house as the four brothers who are the ornament of the Raghu clan. I shall make true all that Narada said, and I shall descend together with my supreme power.
हरिहउँ सकल भूमि गरुआई। निर्भय होहु देव समुदाई॥ गगन ब्रह्मबानी सुनि काना। तुरत फिरे सुर हृदय जुड़ाना॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
harihauṃ sakala bhūmi garuāī। nirbhaya houhu deva samudāī॥ gagana brahmabānī suni kānā। turata fire sura hṛdaya juṛānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
I shall remove the burden of the earth. Be fearless, O host of gods. Hearing the Brahma-voice in the sky, the gods immediately returned; their hearts became joyful.
निज लोकहि बिरंचि गे देवन्ह इहइ सिखाइ। बानर तनु धरि धरि महि हरि पद सेवहु जाइ॥ १८७ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
nija lokahi birañci ge devanha ihai sikhāi। bānara tanu dhari dhari mahi hari pada sevahu jāi॥ 187 ॥
Meaning:
Having thus instructed the gods, that by taking the bodies of monkeys they should go to earth and serve the feet of the Lord, Brahma went to his own realm.
गए देव सब निज निज धामा। भूमि सहित मन कहुँ बिश्रामा॥ जो कछु आयसु ब्रह्माँ दीन्हा। हरषे देव बिलंब न कीन्हा॥ १ ॥

gaye deva saba nija nija dhāmā। bhūmi sahita mana kahũ biśrāmā॥ jo kachuka āyasu brahmã dīnhā। haraṣe deva bilaṃba na kīnhā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
All the gods went to their respective abodes. Along with the earth, all minds found rest. Whatever command Brahma gave, the gods were delighted and delayed not.
बनचर देह धरी छिति माहीं। अतुलित बल प्रताप तिन्ह पाहीं॥ गिरि तरु नख आयुध सब बीरा। हरि मारग चितवहिं मतिधीरा॥ २ ॥

bancara deha dharī chiti māhīṃ। atulita bala pratāpa tinh pāhīṃ॥ giri taru nakha āyudha saba bīrā। hari māraga citavahiṃ matidhīrā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Taking monkey forms on earth, they possessed incomparable strength and glory. All the heroes had mountains, trees, and nails as their weapons. The wise and steadfast ones watched the road for Hari’s coming.
गिरि कानन जहँ तहँ भरि पूरी। रहे निज निज अनीक रचि रूरी॥ यह सब रुचिर चरित मैं भाषा। अब सो सुनहु जो बीचहिं राखा॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
giri kānana jahã tahã bharī pūrī। rahe nija nija anīka raci rūrī॥ yaha saba rucira carita maiṃ bhāṣā। aba so sunahu jo bīcahiṃ rākhā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
There, among mountains and forests, they filled the land everywhere, forming their respective splendid armies. All this beautiful narrative I have told in the vernacular. Now listen to what was left out in the middle.
