Mandodari's Lament and Ravana's Funeral Rites

Mandodari grieves deeply over Ravana's fall and recognizes the ruin caused by his arrogance. At Rama's instruction, Vibhishana performs Ravana's funeral rites with due honor.

Chaupai

पति सिर देखत मंदोदरी। मुरुछित बिकल धरनि खसि परी॥ जुबति बृंद रोवत उठि धाईं। तेहि उठाइ रावन पहिं आईं॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pati sira dekhata maṃdodarī। muruchita bikala dharani khasi parī॥ jubati bṛnda rovata uṭhi dhāīṃ। tehi uṭhāi rāvana pahiṃ āīṃ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

The moment Mandodari saw her husband's head, she became distraught and fainted, falling to the ground. The women of the household rose up weeping, ran to her, lifted her, and brought her to Ravana.

Chaupai

पति गति देखि ते करहिं पुकारा। छूटे कच नहिं बपुष सँभारा॥ उर ताड़ना करहिं बिधि नाना। रोवत करहिं प्रताप बखाना॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pati gati dekhi te karahiṃ pukārā। chūṭe kaca nahim bapuṣa saṃbhārā॥ ura tāḍanā karahiṃ bidhi nānā। rovata karahiṃ pratāpa bakhānā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Seeing their husband's condition, they cried out and wept aloud. Their hair had come undone, and they could no longer care for their bodies. They beat their breasts in many ways and, while weeping, praised Ravana's might.

Chaupai

तव बल नाथ डोल नित धरनी। तेज हीन पावक ससि तरनी॥ सेष कमठ सहि सकहिं न भारा। सो तनु भूमि परेउ भरि छारा॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tava bala nātha ḍola nita dharanī। teja hīna pāvaka sasi taranī॥ seṣa kamaṭha sahi sakahiṃ na bhārā। so tanu bhūmi pareu bhari chārā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord, because of your power the earth would continually tremble. Fire, the moon, and the sun were dim before you. That very body, whose weight even Shesha and the tortoise could not bear, now lies on the ground, covered in dust!

Chaupai

बरुन कुबेर सुरेस समीरा। रन सन्मुख धरि काहुँ न धीरा॥ भुजबल जितेहु काल जम साईं। आजु परेहु अनाथ की नाईं॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

baruna kubera suresa samīrā। rana sanmukha dhari kāhuṃ na dhīrā॥ bhujabala jitehu kāla jama sāīṃ। āju parehu anātha kī nāīṃ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Varuna, Kubera, Indra, and the wind-god—none of them could stand firm before you in battle. O Lord, by the strength of your arms you had conquered even Time and Yama. Yet today you lie there like a helpless orphan.

Chaupai

जगत बिदित तुम्हारि प्रभुताई। सुत परिजन बल बरनि न जाई॥ राम बिमुख अस हाल तुम्हारा। रहा न कोउ कुल रोवनिहारा॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jagata bidita tumhāri prabhutāī। suta parijana bala barani na jāī॥ rāma bimukha asa hāla tumhārā। rahā na kou kula rovanihārā॥ 5 ॥

Meaning:

Your sovereignty is famed throughout the world. Alas, the strength of your sons and kinsmen cannot even be described. It was by turning away from Shri Ramachandra that such a fate befell you, leaving not even one mourner in your clan.

Chaupai

तव बस बिधि प्रपंच सब नाथा। सभय दिसिप नित नावहिं माथा॥ अब तव सिर भुज जंबुक खाहीं। राम बिमुख यह अनुचित नाहीं॥ ६ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tava basa bidhi prapaṃca saba nāthā। sabhaya disipa nita nāvahiṃ māthā॥ aba tava sira bhuja jaṃbuka khāhīṃ। rāma bimukha yaha anucita nāhīṃ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord, all creation was under your control. The guardians of the directions would bow their heads to you in fear. But now, alas, jackals are eating your head and arms. For one who is estranged from Rama, such a fate is not even improper.

Chaupai

काल बिबस पति कहा न माना। अग जग नाथु मनुज करि जाना॥ ७ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

kāla bibasa pati kahā na mānā। aga jaga nāthu manuja kari jānā॥ 7 ॥

Meaning:

O husband, being utterly under the power of Time, you did not heed anyone's words, and you regarded the Lord of all moving and unmoving beings as merely a man.

Chhand

जान्यो मनुज करि दनुज कानन दहन पावक हरि स्वयं। जेहि नमत सिव ब्रह्मादि सुर पिय भजेहु नहिं करुनामयं॥ आजन्म ते परद्रोह रत पापौघमय तव तनु अयं। तुम्हहू दियो निज धाम राम नमामि ब्रह्म निरामयं॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jānyo manuja kari danuja kānana dahana pāvaka hari svayaṃ। jehi namata siva brahmādi sura piya bhajehu nahim karuṇāmayaṃ॥ ājanmata te paradroha rata pāpaughamaya tava tanu ayaṃ। tumhahu diyo nija dhāma rāma namāmi brahma nirāmayaṃ॥

Meaning:

You regarded Lord Hari himself, the fire that burns the forest of demons, as merely a man. You did not worship the merciful Lord whom Shiva, Brahma, and the other gods bow to. From birth, your body was filled with heaps of sin and ever intent on harming others. And yet those changeless Brahman, Shri Rama, gave you their own abode. To that flawless Brahman I bow.

Doha

अहह नाथ रघुनाथ सम कृपासिंधु नहिं आन। जोगि बृंद दुर्लभ गति तोहि दीन्हि भगवान॥ १०४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

ahaha nātha raghunātha sama kṛpāsiṃdhu nahim āna। jogi bṛnda durlabha gati tohi dīnhi bhagavāna॥ 104 ॥

Meaning:

Alas, O Lord, there is no other ocean of compassion like Shri Raghunath, who granted you that state which is difficult even for the host of yogis to attain.

मंदोदरी बचन सुनि काना। सुर मुनि सिद्ध सबन्हि सुख माना॥ अज महेस नारद सनकादी। जे मुनिबर परमारथबादी॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

maṃdodarī bacan suni kānā। sura muni siddha sabanhi sukha mānā॥ aja mahesa nārada sanakādī। je munibara paramārathabādī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing Mandodari's words, the gods, sages, and siddhas all felt delighted. Brahma, Mahesha, Narada, and Sanakadi, along with those great sages who speak from the standpoint of ultimate truth.

भरि लोचन रघुपतिहि निहारी। प्रेम मगन सब भए सुखारी॥ रुदन करत देखीं सब नारी। गयउ बिभीषनु मन दुख भारी॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bhari locana raghupatihi nihārī। prema magana saba bhae sukhārī॥ rudana karata dekhīṃ saba nārī। gayau bibhīṣanu mana dukha bhārī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Seeing Rama with eyes filled to the brim, they all became immersed in love and were filled with joy. Seeing all the women of the household weeping, Vibhishana felt a great sorrow in his heart and went to them.

बंधु दसा बिलोकि दुख कीन्हा। तब प्रभु अनुजहि आयसु दीन्हा॥ लछिमन तेहि बहु बिधि समुझायो। बहुरि बिभीषन प्रभु पहिं आयो॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bandhu dasā biloki dukha kīnhā। taba prabhu anujahi āyasu dīnhā॥ lacchimana tehi bahu bidhi samujhāyo। bahuri bibhīṣana prabhu pahiṃ āyo॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Seeing his brother's plight, he was grieved. Then the Lord gave orders to his younger brother. Lakshmana explained things to him in many ways; afterward Vibhishana returned to the Lord.

कृपादृष्टि प्रभु ताहि बिलोका। करहु क्रिया परिहरि सब सोका॥ कीन्हि क्रिया प्रभु आयसु मानी। बिधिवत देस काल जियँ जानी॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

kṛpādṛṣṭi prabhu tāhi bilokā। karahu kriyā parihari saba sokā॥ kīnhi kriyā prabhu āyasu mānī। bidhivata desa kāla jiyaṃ jānī॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

The Lord looked upon him with a compassionate gaze and said, 'Perform the rites, setting aside all sorrow.' Obeying the Lord's command and considering time and place in his heart, Vibhishana duly performed all the rites.

Doha

मंदोदरी आदि सब देइ तिलांजलि ताहि। भवन गईं रघुपति गुन गन बरनत मन माहि॥ १०५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

maṃdodarī ādi saba dei tilāñjali tāhi। bhavana gaīṃ raghupati guna gana baranata mana māhi॥ 105 ॥

Meaning:

Mandodari and the other women all offered him a libation of sesame water and then went to the palace, inwardly singing the praises of Rama's virtues.
