Vibhishana's Coronation as King of Lanka

By Rama's grace, Vibhishana is crowned king of Lanka. A reign of righteousness begins in a land long troubled by adharma.

Chaupai

आइ बिभीषन पुनि सिरु नायो। कृपासिंधु तब अनुज बोलायो॥ तुम्ह कपीस अंगद नल नीला। जामवंत मारुति नयसीला॥ सब मिलि जाहु बिभीषन साथा। सारेहु तिलक कहेउ रघुनाथा॥ पिता बचन मैं नगर न आवउँ। आपु सरिस कपि अनुज पठावउँ॥ १-२ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

āi bibhīṣana puni siru nāyo। kṛpāsindhu taba anuja bolāyo॥ tumha kapīsa aṅgada nala nīlā। jāmavanta māruti nayasīlā॥ saba mili jāhu bibhīṣana sāthā। sārehu tilaka kaheu raghunāthā॥ pitā bacana maiṃ nagara na āvauṃ। āpu sarisa kapi anuja pathāvauṃ॥ 1-2 ॥

Meaning:

After the rites were completed, Vibhishana came again and bowed his head. Then the ocean of compassion, Rama, called his younger brother. Ragunatha said, 'You, lord of the monkeys, Angada, Nala, Nila, Jambavan, and Maruti, all go together with Vibhishana and perform the coronation. Because of my father's command, I cannot come to the city. I send a monkey and a younger brother like myself.'

Chaupai

तुरत चले कपि सुनि प्रभु बचना। कीन्ही जाइ तिलक की रचना॥ सादर सिंहासन बैठारी। तिलक सारि अस्तुति अनुसारी॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

turata cale kapi suni prabhu bacanā। kīnhī jāi tilaka kī racanā॥ sādara siṃhāsana baiṭhārī। tilaka sāri astuti anusārī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

At once the monkeys went, hearing the Lord's words, and made arrangements for the coronation. With due respect, they seated Vibhishana on the throne and performed the coronation and praise.

Chaupai

जोरि पानि सबहीं सिर नाए। सहित बिभीषन प्रभु पहिं आए॥ तब रघुबीर बोलि कपि लीन्हे। कहि प्रिय बचन सुखी सब कीन्हे॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jori pāni sabahīṃ sira nāe। sahita bibhīṣana prabhu pahiṃ āe॥ taba raghubīra boli kapi līhne। kahi priya bacana sukhī saba kīnhe॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

All joined their palms and bowed their heads. Then, together with Vibhishana, they all came before the Lord. Thereupon Raghuvira called the monkeys near and, speaking kind words, made everyone happy.

Chhand

किए सुखी कहि बानी सुधा सम बल तुम्हारें रिपु हयो। पायो बिभीषन राज तिहुँ पुर जसु तुम्हारो नित नयो॥ मोहि सहित सुभ कीरति तुम्हारी परम प्रीति जो गाइहैं। संसार सिंधु अपार पार प्रयास बिनु नर पाइहैं॥

Transliteration (IAST)

kie sukhī kahi bānī sudhā sama bala tumhāreṃ ripu hayo। pāyo bibhīṣana rāja tihuṃ pura jasu tumhāro nita nayo॥ mohi sahita subha kīrati tumhārī parama prīti jo gāihaiṃ। saṃsāra sindhu apāra pāra prayāsa bina nara pāihaiṃ॥

Meaning:

By speaking words sweet as nectar, he made them happy: 'By your own strength this mighty enemy has been slain, and Vibhishana has obtained the kingdom. Because of this, your fame will ever remain new in the three worlds. Those who, together with me, sing your auspicious glory with deep devotion will cross the vast ocean of the world without effort.'

Doha

प्रभु के बचन श्रवन सुनि नहिं अघाहिं कपि पुंज। बार बार सिर नावहिं गहहिं सकल पद कंज॥ १०६ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

prabhu ke bacana śravana suni nahiṃ aghāhiṃ kapi puñja। bāra bāra sira nāvahiṃ gahahiṃ sakala pada kanja॥ 106 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing the Lord's words with their ears, the troop of monkeys was not satiated. Again and again they bowed their heads and grasped the lotus feet.
