Fierce Battle and Ravana's Collapse
The combat grows intensely fierce, and Ravana is struck unconscious by Rama's blows. Yet, driven by pride, he rises again to continue the fight.

गहि भूमि पार्यो लात मार्यो बालिसुत प्रभु पहिं गयो। संभारि उठि दसकंठ घोर कठोर रव गर्जत भयो॥ करि दाप चाप चढ़ाइ दस संधानि सर बहु बरषई। किए सकल भट घायल भयाकुल देखि निज बल हरषई॥

gahi bhūmi pār̥yo lāt mār̥yo bālisuta prabhu pahiṃ gayo। saṃbhāri uṭhi dasakaṃṭha ghora kaṭhora rava garjata bhayo॥ kari dāpa cāpa caṛhāi dasa saṃdhāni sara bahu baraṣaī। kie sakala bhaṭa ghāyala bhayākula dekhi nija bala haraṣaī॥
Meaning:
Seizing him, he threw him to the ground and kicked him; then Angada, son of Bali, went to the Lord. Ravana gathered himself and rose, roaring in a dreadful, harsh voice. Filled with pride, he lifted his bows, aimed his arrows, and rained them down in abundance. He wounded all the warriors and made them tremble in fear, and then rejoiced at the sight of his own strength.
तब रघुपति रावन के सीस भुजा सर चाप। काटे बहुत बढ़े पुनि जिमि तीरथ कर पाप॥ ९७ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
taba raghupati rāvana ke sīsa bhujā sara cāpa। kāṭe bahuta baḍhe puni jimi tīratha kara pāpa॥ 97 ॥
Meaning:
Then Sri Raghunath cut off Ravana’s heads, arms, arrows, and bows. But they grew back again, just as sins committed at holy places grow and produce even more dreadful results.
सिर भुज बाढ़ि देखि रिपु केरी। भालु कपिन्ह रिस भई घनेरी॥ मरत न मूढ़ कटेहुँ भुज सीसा। धाए कोपि भालु भट कीसा॥ १ ॥

sira bhuja bāṛhi dekhi ripu kerī। bhālu kapinhaṃ risa bhaī ghanerī॥ marata na mūṛha kaṭehuṃ bhuja sīsā। dhāe kopi bhālu bhaṭa kīsā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the enemy’s heads and arms grow again, the bears and monkeys were filled with great anger. “This fool does not die even when his arms and heads are cut off!” With such fury, the bear and monkey warriors rushed forward.
बालितनय मारुति नल नीला। बानरराज दुबिद बलसीला॥ बिटप महीधर करहिं प्रहारा। सोइ गिरि तरु गहि कपिन्ह सो मारा॥ २ ॥

bālitanaya māruti nala nīlā। bānararāja dubida balasīlā॥ biṭapa mahīdhara karahiṃ prahārā। soi giri taru gahi kapinha so mārā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Angada, son of Bali; Maruti Hanuman; Nala; Nila; the monkey-king Sugriva; and the mighty Dwivida and others struck him with trees and mountains. He, in turn, seized those very mountains and trees and used them to strike the monkeys.
एक नखन्हि रिपु बपुष बिदारी। भागि चलहिं एक लातन्ह मारी॥ तब नल नील सिरन्हि चढ़ि गयऊ। नखन्हि लिलार बिदारत भयऊ॥ ३ ॥

eka nakhanhi ripu bapuṣa bidārī। bhāgi calahiṃ eka lātanhi mārī॥ taba nala nīla siranhi caḍhi gayau। nakhanhi lilāra bidārata bhayau॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Some monkeys tore the enemy’s body apart with their claws and fled; others struck him with kicks. Then Nala and Nila climbed onto Ravana’s heads and began tearing open his forehead with their claws.
रुधिर देखि बिषाद उर भारी। तिन्हहि धरन कहुँ भुजा पसारी॥ गहे न जाहिं करन्हि पर फिरहीं। जनु जुग मधुप कमल बन चरहीं॥ ४ ॥

rudhira dekhi biṣāda ura bhārī। tinhahi dharana kahuṃ bhujā pasārī॥ gahe na jāhiṃ karanhi para phirahīṃ। janu juga madhupa kamala bana carahīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the blood, great grief filled his heart. He stretched out his arms to catch them, but they would not be seized; they kept circling above his hands, like two bees moving about in a grove of lotuses.
कोपि कूदि द्वौ धरेसि बहोरी। महि पटकत भजे भुजा मरोरी॥ पुनि सकोप दस धनु कर लीन्हे। सरन्हि मारि घायल कपि कीन्हे॥ ५ ॥

kopi kūdi dvau dharesi bahorī। mahi paṭakata bhaje bhujā marorī॥ puni sakopa dasa dhanu kara līnhe। saranhi māri ghāyala kapi kīnhe॥ 5 ॥
Meaning:
Then, in anger, he leapt up and seized the two again. As he slammed them to the ground, they wriggled free by twisting his arms. He then, in wrath, took up ten bows and wounded the monkeys with arrows.
हनुमदादि मुरुछित करि बंदर। पाइ प्रदोष हरष दसकंधर॥ मुरुछित देखि सकल कपि बीरा। जामवंत धायउ रनधीरा॥ ६ ॥

hanumadādi muruchita kari bandar। pāi pradoṣa haraṣa daskandhara॥ muruchita dekhi sakala kapi bīrā। jāmavaṃta dhāyau ranadhīrā॥ 6 ॥
Meaning:
Having rendered Hanuman and the other monkeys unconscious, and with dusk now at hand, Ravana rejoiced. Seeing all the monkey warriors unconscious, the battle-hardened Jambavan rushed forward.
संग भालु भूधर तरु धारी। मारन लगे पचारि पचारी॥ भयउ क्रुद्ध रावन बलवाना। गहि पद महि पटकइ भट नाना॥ ७ ॥

saṃga bhālu bhūdhara taru dhārī। mārana lage pacāri pacārī॥ bhayau kruddha rāvana balavānā। gahi pada mahi paṭakai bhaṭa nānā॥ 7 ॥
Meaning:
The bears with Jambavan, carrying mountains and trees, began attacking Ravana while challenging him again and again. The mighty Ravana grew furious and, seizing their feet, hurled many warriors to the ground.
उर लात घात प्रचंड लागत बिकल रथ ते महि परा। गहि भालु बीसहुँ कर मनहुँ कमलन्हि बसे निसि मधुकरा॥ मुरुछित बिलोकि बहोरि पद हति भालुपति प्रभु पहिं गयो। निसि जानि स्यंदन घालि तेहि तब सूत जतनु करत भयो॥

ura lāta ghāta pracaṇḍa lāgata bikala ratha te mahi parā। gahi bhālu bīsahuṃ kara manahuṃ kamalanhi base nisi madhukarā॥ muruchita biloki bahori pada hati bhālupati prabhu pahiṃ gayo। nisi jāni syandana ghāli tehi taba sūta jatanu karata bhayo॥
Meaning:
As the fierce blow of the kick struck his chest, Ravana was thrown into distress and fell from his chariot to the ground. He held the bears in all twenty hands. [It seemed] as though bees were resting in lotuses by night. Seeing him unconscious, Jambavan, king of the bears, kicked him again and went to the Lord. Knowing it was night, the charioteer placed Ravana back in the chariot and began trying to revive him.
मुरुछा बिगत भालु कपि सब आए प्रभु पास। निसिचर सकल रावनहि घेरि रहे अति त्रास॥ ९८ ॥

muruchā bigata bhālu kapi saba āe prabhu pāsa। nisichara sakala rāvanahi gheri rahe ati trāsa॥ 98 ॥
Meaning:
When their unconsciousness passed, all the bears and monkeys came to the Lord. Meanwhile, all the demons, in great fear, surrounded Ravana.
