Chaupai

देखत बन सर सैल सुहाए। बालमीकि आश्रम प्रभु आए॥ राम दीख मुनि बासु सुहावन। सुंदर गिरि काननु जलु पावन॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

dekhat bana sara saila suhāe। bālamīki āśrama prabhu āe॥ rāma dīkha muni bāsu suhāvana। sundara giri kānanu jalu pāvana॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Viewing the lovely forests, lakes, and hills, Lord Rama came to the hermitage of Sage Valmiki. Rama saw that the sage’s dwelling was most beautiful, with lovely hills, forests, and pure waters.

Chaupai

सरनि सरोज बिटप बन फूले। गुंजत मंजु मधुप रस भूले॥ खग मृग बिपुल कोलाहल करहीं। बिरहित बैर मुदित मन चरहीं॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

saraṇi saroja biṭapa bana phūle। guñjata mañju madhupa rasa bhūle॥ khaga mṛga bipula kolāhala karahīṃ। birahita baira mudita mana carahīṃ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Lotuses bloom in the lakes and trees in the forests are in flower; bees, enchanted by the nectar, hum sweetly. Many birds and beasts are making a lively noise, and free from enmity they roam with cheerful hearts.

Doha

सुचि सुंदर आश्रमु निरखि हरषे राजिवनेन। सुनि रघुबर आगमनु मुनि आगें आयउ लेन॥ १२४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

suci sundara āśramu nirakhi haraṣe rājivanena। suni raghubara āgamanu muni āgeṃ āyau lena॥ 124 ॥

Meaning:

Seeing the pure and beautiful hermitage, the lotus-eyed Rama was delighted. Hearing of Lord Rama’s arrival, Sage Valmiki came forward to receive him.

मुनि कहुँ राम दंडवत कीन्हा। आसिरबादु बिप्रबर दीन्हा॥ देखि राम छबि नयन जुड़ाने। करि सनमानु आश्रमहिं आने॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

muni kahũ rāma daṇḍavata kīnhā। āsirbādu biprabara dīnhā॥ dekhi rāma chabi nayana juḍāne। kari sanmānu āśramahiṃ āne॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Lord Rama prostrated himself before the sage, and the best of Brahmins blessed him. Seeing Rama’s beauty, the sage’s eyes were soothed. With due honor, he brought him into the hermitage.

Chaupai

मुनिबर अतिथि प्रानप्रिय पाए। कंद मूल फल मधुर मगाए॥ सिय सौमित्रि राम फल खाए। तब मुनि आश्रम दिए सुहाए॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

munibara atithi prānapriya pāe। kanda mūla phala madhura magāe॥ siya saumitri rāma phala khāe। taba muni āśrama die suhāe॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

The great sage Valmiki, having received those dear guests, had sweet roots, bulbs, and fruits brought for them. Sita, Lakshmana, and Rama ate the fruits. Then the sage showed them pleasant places to rest.

Chaupai

बालमीकि मन आनँदु भारी। मंगल मूरति नयन निहारी॥ तब कर कमल जोरि रघुराई। बोले बचन श्रवन सुखदाई॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bālamīki mana ānaṃdu bhārī। maṅgala mūrati nayana nihārī॥ taba kara kamala jori raghurāī। bole bacana sravana sukhadāī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

[Sitting near Lord Rama and beholding his auspicious form with his eyes,] Valmiki felt immense joy in his heart. Then Lord of the Raghu clan folded his lotus-like hands and spoke words that gave delight to the ears:

Chaupai

तुम्ह त्रिकाल दरसी मुनिनाथा। बिस्व बदर जिमि तुम्हरें हाथा॥ अस कहि प्रभु सब कथा बखानी। जेहि जेहि भाँति दीन्ह बनु रानी॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tumhã trikāla darasī munināthā। bisva badara jimi tumhareṃ hāthā॥ asa kahi prabhu saba kathā bakhānī। jehi jehi bhāṁti dīnh bana rānī॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

O lord of sages, you see the past, present, and future. The whole world is like a jujube fruit resting in your hand. Having said this, Lord Rama then narrated in full the story of how Queen Kaikeyi had granted the forest exile in every detail.

Doha

तात बचन पुनि मातु हित भाइ भरत अस राउ। मो कहुँ दरस तुम्हार प्रभु सबु मम पुन्य प्रभाउ॥ १२५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tāta bacana puni mātu hita bhāi bharata asa rāu। mo kahũ darasa tumhāra prabhu sabu mama puṇya prabhāu॥ 125 ॥

Meaning:

[And he said:] O Lord, the fulfillment of my father’s command, the welfare of my mother, the kingship of a brother like Bharata, and then my obtaining your sight—all this is the result of my merit.

देखि पाय मुनिराय तुम्हारे। भए सुकृत सब सुफल हमारे॥ अब जहँ राउर आयसु होई। मुनि उदबेगु न पावै कोई॥ १ ॥

dekhi pāya munirāya tumhāre। bhae sukṛta saba suphala hamāre॥ aba jahaã raura āyasu hoī। muni udabegu na pāvai koī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

O sage-king, by seeing your feet all our meritorious deeds have borne fruit. Now, wherever your command may be, and wherever no sage may be troubled by anxiety—

Chaupai

मुनि तापस जिन्ह तें दुखु लहहीं। ते नरेस बिनु पावक दहहीं॥ मंगल मूल बिप्र परितोषू। दहइ कोटि कुल भूसुर रोषू॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

muni tāpasa jinha teṃ dukhu lahahīṃ। te naresa bina pāvaka dahahīṃ॥ maṅgala mūla bipra paritoṣū। dahi koṭi kula bhūsura roṣū॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

For kings from whom sages and ascetics suffer sorrow are burned up even without fire, consumed by their own evil deeds. The satisfaction of Brahmins is the root of all auspiciousness, while the anger of the godly Brahmins can burn up millions of lineages.

Chaupai

अस जियँ जानि कहिअ सोइ ठाऊँ। सिय सौमित्रि सहित जहँ जाऊँ॥ तहँ रचि रुचिर परन तृन साला। बासु करौं कछु काल कृपाला॥ ३ ॥

asa jiyã jāni kahia soi ṭhāũ। siya saumitri sahita jahaã jāũ॥ tahaã raci rucira parana trina sālā। bāsu karauṃ kachu kāla kṛpālā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Keeping this in mind, please tell me the place where I may go with Lakshmana and Sita. There, let me build a lovely hut of leaves and grass and dwell for some time, O compassionate one.

Chaupai

सहज सरल सुनि रघुबर बानी। साधु साधु बोले मुनि ग्यानी॥ कस न कहहु अस रघुकुलकेतू। तुम्ह पालक संतत श्रुति सेतू॥ ४ ॥

sahaja sarala suni raghubara bānī। sādhu sādhu bole muni gyānī॥ kasa na kahahu asa raghukulaketū। tumha pālaka santata śruti setū॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing the gentle and simple words of Lord Rama, the wise sage Valmiki said, “Excellent! Excellent! O banner of the Raghu line, why would you not speak thus? You are forever the guardian of the Vedas’ order.”

Chhand

श्रुति सेतु पालक राम तुम्ह जगदीस माया जानकी। जो सृजति जगु पालति हरति रुख पाइ कृपानिधान की॥ जो सहससीसु अहीसु महिधरु लखनु सचराचर धनी। सुर काज धरि नरराज तनु चले दलन खल निसिचर अनी॥

Transliteration (IAST)

śruti setu pālaka rāma tumha jagadīsa māyā jānakī। jo sṛjati jagu pālati harati rukha pāi kṛpānidhāna kī॥ jo sahasasīsu ahīsu mahidharu lakhanu sacarācara dhanī। sura kāja dhari nararāja tanu cale dalana khala nisicara anī॥

Meaning:

O Rama, you are the Lord of the universe, the guardian of the Vedic order, and Janaki is your divine Maya, who, by your will, creates, sustains, and dissolves the world. He who is lord of the thousand-headed serpent and bearer of the earth upon his head, the master of all moving and unmoving beings, is Lakshmana. For the sake of the gods, you have assumed the body of a king and set forth to destroy the armies of the wicked demons.

Soratha

राम सरूप तुम्हार बचन अगोचर बुद्धिपर। अबिगत अकथ अपार नेति नेति नित निगम कह॥ १२६ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

rāma sarūpa tumhāra bacana agocara buddhipara। avigata akatha apāra neti neti nita nigama kaha॥ 126 ॥

Meaning:

O Rama, your true form is beyond speech, beyond intellect, unmanifest, indescribable, and infinite. The Vedas continually describe it by saying, “Not this, not this.”

जगु पेखन तुम्ह देखनिहारे। बिधि हरि संभु नचावनिहारे॥ तेउ न जानहिं मरमु तुम्हारा। औरु तुम्हहि को जाननिहारा॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jagu pekhana tumha dekhani hāre। bidhi hari sambhu nacāvanihāre॥ teu na jānahiṃ maramu tumhārā। auru tumhahi ko jānani hārā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

O Rama, the world is the object seen, and you are the seer. You are the one who makes Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva dance. If even they do not know your inner mystery, then who else can know you?

Chaupai

सोइ जानइ जेहि देहु जनाई। जानत तुम्हहि तुम्हइ होइ जाई॥ तुम्हरिहि कृपाँ तुम्हहि रघुनंदन। जानहिं भगत भगत उर चंदन॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

soi jānai jehi dehu janāī। jānata tumhahi tumahi hoi jāī॥ tumharihi kṛpā̃ tumhahi raghunandana। jānahiṃ bhagata bhagata ura candana॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Only the one whom you choose to reveal to knows you; and once he knows you, he becomes one with you. O Raghunandana, O sandalwood that cools the hearts of devotees, it is only by your grace that devotees come to know you.

Chaupai

चिदानंदमय देह तुम्हारी। बिगत बिकार जान अधिकारी॥ नर तनु धरेहु संत सुर काजा। कहहु करहु जस प्राकृत राजा॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

cidānandamaya deha tumhārī। bigata bikāra jāna adhikārī॥ nara tanu dharehu santa sura kājā। kahahu karahu jasa prākṛta rājā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Your body is made of pure consciousness and bliss; it is free from all blemish and change, and only the qualified understand this truth. For the sake of saints and gods, you have taken on a human form and speak and act like an ordinary king.

Chaupai

राम देखि सुनि चरित तुम्हारे। जड़ मोहहिं बुध होहिं सुखारे॥ तुम्ह जो कहहु करहु सबु साँचा। जस काछिअ तस चाहिअ नाचा॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

rāma dekhi suni carita tumhāre। jaḍa mohahīṃ budha hohīṃ sukhāre॥ tumha jo kahahu karahu sabu sāṁcā। jasa kāchia tasa cāhia nācā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

O Rama, seeing and hearing your deeds, the foolish become deluded, while the wise become joyful. Whatever you say and do is true and proper; for one must dance as the role requires—since you are in human form, human conduct is fitting.

Doha

पूँछेहु मोहि कि रहौं कहँ मैं पूँछत सकुचाउँ। जहँ न होहु तहँ देहु कहि तुम्हहि देखावौं ठाउँ॥ १२७ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pūnchehu mohi ki rahauṃ kahã maiṃ pūnchata sakucāũ। jahaã na hohu tahaã dehu kahi tumhahi dekhāvauṃ ṭhãũ॥ 127 ॥

Meaning:

You asked me where I should live, but I hesitate to ask for a place where you are not present. Please tell me such a place, and I shall show you a dwelling there.

सुनि मुनि बचन प्रेम रस साने। सकुचि राम मन महुँ मुसुकाने॥ बालमीकि हँसि कहहिं बहोरी। बानी मधुर अमिअ रस बोरी॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

suni muni bacana prema rasa sāne। sakuci rāma mana mahuṃ musukāne॥ bālamīki haṃsi kahahiṃ bahorī। bānī madhura amia rasa borī॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Hearing the saint’s words steeped in love, Sri Ramchandra smiled inwardly, shyly, for fear that the secret had been revealed. Valmiki, smiling, spoke again in sweet words drenched with nectar.

Chaupai

सुनहु राम अब कहउँ निकेता। जहाँ बसहु सिय लखन समेता॥ जिन्ह के श्रवन समुद्र समाना। कथा तुम्हारि सुभग सरि नाना॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

sunahu rāma aba kahauṃ niketā। jahāṃ basahu siya lakhana sametā॥ jinha ke śravana samudra samānā। kathā tumhāri subhaga sari nānā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Listen, Rama; now I shall tell you the abodes where you may dwell together with Sita and Lakshmana. For those whose ears are like the ocean, your beautiful story flows in many lovely streams...

Chaupai

भरहिं निरंतर होहिं न पूरे। तिन्ह के हिय तुम्ह कहुँ गृह रूरे॥ लोचन चातक जिन्ह करि राखे। रहहिं दरस जलधर अभिलाषे॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bharahiṃ nirantara hohiṃ na pūre। tinha ke hiya tumha kahuṃ gṛha rūre॥ locana cātaka jinha kari rākhē। rahahiṃ darasa jaladhara abhilāṣe॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

They keep filling, yet are never filled; their hearts are lovely homes for You. Those who have made their eyes into chataka birds remain ever longing for the cloud of Your vision.

Chaupai

निदरहिं सरित सिंधु सर भारी। रूप बिंदु जल होहिं सुखारी॥ तिन्ह कें हृदय सदन सुखदायक। बसहु बंधु सिय सह रघुनायक॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

nidarahiṃ sarita sindhu sara bhārī। rūpa bindu jala hohiṃ sukhārī॥ tinha keṃ hṛdaya sadana sukhadāyaka। basahu bandhu siya saha raghunāyaka॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

And those who disdain rivers, oceans, and large lakes, and are content with even a drop of the water of Your beauty-cloud—before whom even the splendors of the three worlds are cast aside—O Raghunatha, dwell in the सुखदायी homes of their hearts together with Lakshmana and Sita.

Doha

जसु तुम्हार मानस बिमल हंसिनि जीहा जासु। मुकताहल गुन गन चुनइ राम बसहु हियँ तासु॥ १२८ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jasu tumhāra mānasa bimala haṃsini jihā jāsu। mukatāhala guna gana cunai rāma basahu hiyaṃ tāsu॥ 128 ॥

Meaning:

In the pure Manasarovar of Your glory, whose tongue has become a swan and keeps pecking at the pearl-like clusters of Your virtues, O Rama, dwell in that person’s heart.

प्रभु प्रसाद सुचि सुभग सुबासा। सादर जासु लहइ नित नासा॥ तुम्हहि निबेदित भोजन करहीं। प्रभु प्रसाद पट भूषन धरहीं॥ १ ॥

prabhu prasāda suci subhaga subāsā। sādara jāsu lahai nita nāsā॥ tumhahi nibedita bhojana karahīṃ। prabhu prasāda paṭa bhūṣana dharahīṃ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Whose nose daily and respectfully receives the Lord’s pure, fragrant, and beautiful offerings; who eat only what has been offered to You, and wear garments and ornaments as Your prasād.

Chaupai

सीस नवहिं सुर गुरु द्विज देखी। प्रीति सहित करि बिनय बिसेषी॥ कर नित करहिं राम पद पूजा। राम भरोस हृदयँ नहिं दूजा॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

sīsa navahiṃ sura guru dvija dekhī। prīti sahita kari binaya biśeṣī॥ kara nita karahiṃ rāma pada pūjā। rāma bharosa hṛdayaṃ nahiṃ dūjā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Whose heads bow down with loving reverence upon seeing gods, gurus, and brahmins; whose hands daily worship the feet of Rama; and whose hearts rely on Rama alone, with no second trust.

Chaupai

चरन राम तीरथ चलि जाहीं। राम बसहु तिन्ह के मन माहीं॥ मंत्रराजु नित जपहिं तुम्हारा। पूजहिं तुम्हहि सहित परिवारा॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

carana rāma tīratha cali jāhīṃ। rāma basahu tinha ke mana māhīṃ॥ mantrarāju nita japahiṃ tumhārā। pūjahiṃ tumhahi sahita parivārā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Whose feet go on pilgrimage to Rama’s holy places; O Rama, dwell in their hearts. They continually repeat Your royal mantra and worship You together with their family.

Chaupai

तरपन होम करहिं बिधि नाना। बिप्र जेवाँइ देहिं बहु दाना॥ तुम्ह तें अधिक गुरहि जियँ जानी। सकल भायँ सेवहिं सनमानी॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tarapana homa karahiṃ bidhi nānā। bipra jevāṃi dehiṃ bahu dānā॥ tumha teṃ adhika gurahiṃ jiyāṃ jānī। sakala bhāyaṃ sevahiṃ sanamānī॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Those who perform many kinds of tarpan and homa, feed brahmins and give much in charity, and who, holding the guru in their hearts as greater than even You, serve him with all honor and devotion.

Doha

सबु करि मागहिं एक फलु राम चरन रति होउ। तिन्ह कें मन मंदिर बसहु सिय रघुनंदन दोउ॥ १२९ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

sabu kari māgahiṃ eka phalu rāma carana rati hou। tinha keṃ mana mandira basahu siya raghunandana dou॥ 129 ॥

Meaning:

And after doing all these acts, they ask for only one fruit: that love for Rama’s feet may arise in us. In the temples of their hearts, dwell You both, Sita and the delight of the Raghu line.

काम कोह मद मान न मोहा। लोभ न छोभ न राग न द्रोहा॥ जिन्ह कें कपट दंभ नहिं माया। तिन्ह कें हृदय बसहु रघुराया॥ १ ॥

kāma koha mada māna na mohā। lobha na chobha na rāga na drohā॥ jinha keṃ kapaṭa daṃbha nahiṃ māyā। tinha keṃ hṛdaya basahu raghurāyā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Those in whom lust, anger, pride, delusion, greed, agitation, attachment, hatred, deceit, arrogance, and illusion are absent—O King of the Raghus, dwell in their hearts.

Chaupai

सब के प्रिय सब के हितकारी। दुख सुख सरिस प्रसंसा गारी॥ कहहिं सत्य प्रिय बचन बिचारी। जागत सोवत सरन तुम्हारी॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

saba ke priya saba ke hitakārī। dukha sukha sarisa prasaṃsā gārī॥ kahahiṃ satya priya bacana bicārī। jāgata sovata saran tumhārī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Those who are dear to all and benefactors of all; for whom pain and pleasure, praise and abuse are alike; who thoughtfully speak truthful and pleasing words; and who are in Your refuge whether waking or sleeping.

Chaupai

तुम्हहि छाड़ि गति दूसरि नाहीं। राम बसहु तिन्ह के मन माहीं॥ जननी सम जानहिं परनारी। धनु पराव बिष तें बिष भारी॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tumhahi chāḍi gati dūsari nāhīṃ। rāma basahu tinha ke mana māhīṃ॥ jananī sama jānahiṃ paranārī। dhanu parāva biṣa teṃ biṣa bhārī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Those who have no refuge other than You, O Rama, dwell in their hearts. Those who regard another’s woman as a mother, and for whom another’s wealth is a poison heavier than poison itself...

Chaupai

जे हरषहिं पर संपति देखी। दुखित होहिं पर बिपति बिसेषी॥ जिन्हहि राम तुम्ह प्रानपिआरे। तिन्ह के मन सुभ सदन तुम्हारे॥ ४ ॥

je haraṣahiṃ para saṃpati dekhī। dukhita hohiṃ para bipati biśeṣī॥ jinhahi rāma tumha prānapiāre। tinha ke mana subha sadana tumhāre॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Those who rejoice at another’s prosperity and grieve especially at another’s misfortune; and to whom, O Rama, You are dearer than life—their hearts are the blessed mansions fit for Your dwelling.

स्वामिसखा पितु मातु गुर जिन्ह के सब तुम्ह तात। मन मंदिर तिन्ह कें बसहु सीय सहित दोउ भ्रात॥ १३० ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

svāmisakhā pitu mātu guru jinha ke saba tumha tāta। mana mandira tinha keṃ basahu sīya sahita dou bhrāta॥ 130 ॥

Meaning:

O dear Lord! For those whose master, friend, father, mother, and guru are all You alone, dwell in the temple of their hearts together with Sita, both brothers.

अवगुन तजि सब के गुन गहहीं। बिप्र धेनु हित संकट सहहीं॥ नीति निपुन जिन्ह कइ जग लीका। घर तुम्हार तिन्ह कर मनु नीका॥ १ ॥

avaguna taji saba ke guna gahahīṃ। bipra dhenu hita saṃkaṭa sahahīṃ॥ nīti nipuna jinha kai jaga līkā। ghara tumhāra tinha kara manu nīkā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Those who छोड़ their faults and take up everyone’s virtues, who endure hardship for the welfare of brahmins and cows, and whose conduct in the world is guided by policy and discernment—such a noble mind is Your home.

गुन तुम्हार समुझइ निज दोसा। जेहि सब भाँति तुम्हार भरोसा॥ राम भगत प्रिय लागहिं जेही। तेहि उर बसहु सहित बैदेही॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

guna tumhāra samujhai nija dosā। jehi saba bhāṃti tumhāra bharosā॥ rāma bhagata priya lāgahiṃ jehī। tehī ura basahu sahita baidehī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

One who regards Your virtues as Yours and his faults as his own, who has complete trust in You in every way, and for whom Rama’s devotees are dear—dwell in that person’s heart with Vaidehi.

Chaupai

जाति पाँति धनु धरमु बड़ाई। प्रिय परिवार सदन सुखदाई॥ सब तजि तुम्हहि रहइ उर लाई। तेहि के हृदयँ रहहु रघुराई॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jāti pāṃti dhanu dharamu baṛāī। priya parivāra sadana sukhadāī॥ saba taji tumhahi rahai ura lāī। tehi ke hṛdayaṃ rahahu raghurāī॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

One who abandons caste, rank, wealth, duty, honor, dear family, and the सुखदायी home, and holds only You in the heart—O Raghurāi, dwell in that heart.

सरगु नरकु अपबरगु समाना। जहँ तहँ देख धरें धनु बाना॥ करम बचन मन राउर चेरा। राम करहु तेहि कें उर डेरा॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

saragu naraku apabaragu samānā। jahāṃ tahāṃ dekha dhareṃ dhanu bānā॥ karama bacana mana rauru cerā। rāma karahu tehi keṃ ura ḍerā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

For whom heaven, hell, and liberation are all the same, because everywhere he sees only You bearing the bow and arrows; and who is Your servant in deed, word, and thought—O Rama, make Your dwelling in that heart.

Doha

जाहि न चाहिअ कबहुँ कछु तुम्ह सन सहज सनेहु। बसहु निरंतर तासु मन सो राउर निज गेहु॥ १३१ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jāhi na cāhia kabahuṃ kacha tumha sana sahaja sanehu। basahu nirantara tāsu mana so rauru nija gehu॥ 131 ॥

One who never desires anything and whose love for You is natural—dwell continually in that person’s mind; that is truly Your own home.

Chaupai

एहि बिधि मुनिबर भवन देखाए। बचन सप्रेम राम मन भाए॥ कह मुनि सुनहु भानुकुलनायक। आश्रम कहउँ समय सुखदायक॥ १ ॥

ehi bidhi munibara bhavana dekhāe। bacana saprema rāma mana bhāe॥ kaha muni sunahu bhānukulanāyaka। āśrama kahauṃ samaya sukhadāyaka॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

In this way the great sage Valmiki showed Rama the dwellings. His loving words pleased Rama’s mind. Then the sage said, “Listen, O Lord of the solar race; now I shall tell you of a hermitage that is सुखदायक for the present time.”

Chaupai

चित्रकूट गिरि करहु निवासू। तहँ तुम्हार सब भाँति सुपासू॥ सैलु सुहावन कानन चारू। करि केहरि मृग बिहग बिहारू॥ २ ॥

citrakūṭa giri karahu nivāsū। tahaṃ tumhāra saba bhāṃti supāsū॥ sailu suhāvana kānana cāru। kari kehari mṛga bihaga bihārū॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Make your dwelling on Mount Chitrakoot; there you will find every kind of comfort. It is a delightful hill and a beautiful forest, a place where elephants, lions, deer, and birds roam.

Chaupai

नदी पुनीत पुरान बखानी। अत्रिप्रिया निज तप बल आनी॥ सुरसरि धार नाउँ मंदाकिनि। जो सब पातक पोतक डाकिनि॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

nadī punīta purāna bakhānī। atripriyā nija tapa bala ānī॥ surasari dhāra nāuṃ mandākini। jo saba pātaka potaka ḍākini॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

There is a sacred river there, praised in the Puranas, brought by Atri’s beloved through the power of her own austerity. It is a stream of the Ganga; its name is Mandakini. It is like a witch who devours all the children of sin.

Chaupai

अत्रि आदि मुनिबर बहु बसहीं। करहिं जोग जप तप तन कसहीं॥ चलहु सफल श्रम सब कर करहू। राम देहु गौरव गिरिबरहू॥ ४ ॥

atri ādi munibara bahu basahīṃ। karahiṃ joga japa tapa tana kasahīṃ॥ calahu saphala śrama saba kara karahū। rāma dehu gaurava giribarahū॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Atri and many other great sages dwell there, disciplining their bodies through yoga, japa, and austerity. O Rama, come and make all this effort fruitful; bestow glory on the foremost of mountains as well.

चित्रकूट महिमा अमित कही महामुनि गाइ। आइ नहाए सरित बर सिय समेत दोउ भाइ॥ १३२ ॥

citrakūṭa mahimā amita kahī mahāmuni gāi। ai nahāe sarita bara siya sameta dou bhāi॥ 132 ॥

Meaning:

The great sage sang and declared the immeasurable glory of Chitrakoot. Then the two brothers, together with Sita, came and bathed in the noble river Mandakini.
