Shaken by Manthara's words, Kaikeyi withdraws to the chamber of anger. From this moment, a shadow falls over Ayodhya's joy.

कुबरिहि रानि प्रानप्रिय जानी। बार बार बड़ि बुद्धि बखानी॥ तोहि सम हित न मोर संसारा। बहे जात कइ भइसि अधारा॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
kubarihi rāni prānapriya jānī। bāra bāra baḍi buddhi bakhānī॥ tohi sama hita na mora saṃsārā। bahe jāta kai bhaisi adhārā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
The queen regarded Manthara as dear as life itself and again and again praised her great wisdom, saying, "There is no one in the world as helpful to me as you. You have become a support to me as I was being swept away."
जौं बिधि पुरब मनोरथु काली। करौं तोहि चख पूतरि आली॥ बहुबिधि चेरिहि आदरु देई। कोपभवन गवनी कैकेई॥ २ ॥

jauṃ bidhi puraba manorathu kālī। karauṃ tohi cakha pūtarī ālī॥ bahubidhi cerihi ādaru deī। kopabhavana gavanī kaikēī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
"If Fate fulfills my desire tomorrow, dear friend, I will keep you as the very pupil of my eye." Having honored the maid in many ways, Kaikeyi went to the anger chamber.
बिपति बीजु बरषा रितु चेरी। भुइँ भइ कुमति कैकई केरी॥ पाइ कपट जलु अंकुर जामा। बर दोउ दल दुख फल परिनामा॥ ३ ॥

bipati bīju baraṣā ritu cerī। bhuīṃ bhai kumati kaikai kerī॥ pāi kapaṭa jalu aṃkura jāmā। bara dou dala dukha phala parināmā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Misfortune was the seed, the rainy season the maid, and Kaikeyi's evil mind became the ground. With the water of deceit, the sprout emerged. The two boons are its two leaves, and in the end its fruit will be sorrow.
कोप समाजु साजि सबु सोई। राजु करत निज कुमति बिगोई॥ राउर नगर कोलाहलु होई। यह कुचालि कछु जान न कोई॥ ४ ॥

kopa samāju sāji sabu soī। rāju karata nija kumati bigoī॥ rāūra nagara kolāhalu hoī। yaha kuchāli kachu jāna na koī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
Kaikeyi, fully prepared for anger and resentment, went to sleep in the anger chamber. While ruling, she ruined herself through her own wicked mind. There is uproar in the palace and the city, yet no one knows of this deceitful plot.
प्रमुदित पुर नर नारि सब सजहिं सुमंगलचार। एक प्रबिसहिं एक निर्गमहिं भीर भूप दरबार॥ २३ ॥

pramudita pura nara nāri saba sajaheṃ sumaṃgalacāra। eka pravisahiṃ eka nirgamahiṃ bhīra bhūpa darabāra॥ 23 ॥
Meaning:
With great joy, all the men and women of the city prepared auspicious ceremonial arrangements. Some entered, some came out; there was a great crowd at the king's court.
बाल सखा सुनि हियँ हरषाहीं। मिलि दस पाँच राम पहिं जाहीं॥ प्रभु आदरहिं प्रेमु पहिचानी। पूँछहिं कुसल खेम मृदु बानी॥ १ ॥

bāla sakhā suni hiyaṃ haraṣāhīṃ। mili dasa pāṃca rāma pahiṃ jāhīṃ॥ prabhu ādarahiṃ premu pahicānī। pūṃchahiṃ kusala khema mṛdu bānī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the news of the coronation, Rama's boyhood friends rejoice in their hearts. A group of ten or five go to Rama. Recognizing their love, the Lord honors them and gently asks after their welfare.
फिरहिं भवन प्रिय आयसु पाई। करत परसपर राम बड़ाई॥ को रघुबीर सरिस संसारा। सीलु सनेहु निबाहनिहारा॥ २ ॥

phirahiṃ bhavana priya āyasu pāī। karata parasapara rāma baḍāī॥ ko raghubīra sarisa saṃsārā। sīlu sanehu nibāhanihārā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Having received the beloved Lord Rama's command, they return home praising Rama to one another, saying, "Who in the world is like Raghubira in character and in faithfully preserving love?"
जेहिं जेहिं जोनि करम बस भ्रमहीं। तहँ तहँ ईसु देउ यह हमहीं॥ सेवक हम स्वामी सियनाहू। होउ नात यह ओर निबाहू॥ ३ ॥

jehiṃ jehiṃ joni karama basa bhramahīṃ। tahaṃ tahaṃ īsu deu yaha hamahīṃ॥ sevaka hama svāmī siyanāhū। hou nāta yaha ora nibhāhū॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
May God grant that wherever, in whatever form we are born as we wander according to our karma, we remain servants there, and Rama, Lord of Sita, remain our Master, so that this bond may endure to the end.
अस अभिलाषु नगर सब काहू। कैकयसुता हृदयँ अति दाहू॥ को न कुसंगति पाइ नसाई। रहइ न नीच मतें चतुराई॥ ४ ॥

asa abhilāṣu nagara saba kāhū। kaikayasutā hṛdayaṃ ati dāhū॥ ko na kusaṃgati pāi nasāī। rahai na nīca mateṃ caturāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
This is the desire of everyone in the city. But Kaikeyi's heart burns with intense jealousy. Who does not perish by falling into bad company? When one follows the counsel of the low-minded, cleverness does not remain.
