Sati Goes to Daksha’s Yagya

Despite Shiva’s counsel, Sati resolves to go to her father Daksha’s Yagya. Her journey sets the stage for a deeply tragic and decisive event.

Chaupai

पिता भवन जब गईं भवानी। दच्छ त्रास काहुँ न सनमानी॥ सादर भलेहिं मिली एक माता। भगिनीं मिलीं बहुत मुसुकाता॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pitā bhavana jaba gaīṃ bhavānī। daccha trāsa kāhuṃ na sanamānī॥ sādar bhalehiṃ milī eka mātā। bhaginīṃ milīṃ bahuta musukātā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

When Bhavani reached her father Daksha’s house, no one welcomed her out of fear of Daksha; only one mother received her respectfully, and the sisters met her with many smiles.

Chaupai

दच्छ न कछु पूछी कुसलाता। सतिहि बिलोकि जरे सब गाता॥ सतीं जाइ देखेउ तब जागा। कतहुँ न दीख संभु कर भागा॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

daccha na kachu pūchī kusalātā। satihi biloki jare saba gātā॥ satīṃ jāi dekheu taba jāgā। katahuṃ na dīkha sambhu kara bhāgā॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

Daksha did not even inquire about her well-being; instead, when he saw Sati, all his limbs seemed to burn. Then Sati went and looked at the sacrifice, but she could not see Shiva’s share anywhere.

Chaupai

तब चित चढ़ेउ जो संकर कहेऊ। प्रभु अपमानु समुझि उर दहेऊ॥ पाछिल दुखु न हृदयँ अस ब्यापा। जस यह भयउ महा परितापा॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

taba cita chaṛheu jo saṃkara kaheū। prabhu apamānu samujhi ura daheu॥ pāchila dukhu na hṛdayaṃ asa byāpā। jasa yaha bhayau mahā paritāpā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Then what Shiva had said became clear to her. Understanding it as an insult to her Lord, Sati’s heart burned. The earlier sorrow had not afflicted her heart as deeply as this great anguish did now.

Chaupai

जद्यपि जग दारुन दुख नाना। सब तें कठिन जाति अवमाना॥ समुझि सो सतिहि भयउ अति क्रोधा। बहु बिधि जननीं कीन्ह प्रबोधा॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jadyapi jaga dāruna dukha nānā। saba teṃ kaṭhina jāti avamānā॥ samujhi so satihi bhayau ati krodhā। bahu bidhi jananīṃ kīnha prabodhā॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Although there are many dreadful sorrows in the world, dishonor to one’s lineage is the hardest to bear. Reflecting on this, Sati became very angry. Her mother tried in many ways to console and persuade her.

Doha

सिव अपमानु न जाइ सहि हृदयँ न होइ प्रबोध। सकल सभहि हठि हटकि तब बोलीं बचन सक्रोध॥ ६३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

siva apamānu na jāi sahi hṛdayaṃ na hoi prabodha। sakala sabhahi haṭhi haṭaki taba bolīṃ bacana sakrodha॥ 63 ॥

Meaning:

But she could not bear the insult to Shiva, and so no amount of reasoning could move her heart. Then, sternly rebuking the whole assembly, she spoke words full of anger.
