Chaupai

रघुपति चित्रकूट बसि नाना। चरित किए श्रुति सुधा समाना॥ बहुरि राम अस मन अनुमाना। होइहि भीर सबहिं मोहि जाना॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

raghupati citrakūṭa basi nānā। carita kie śruti sudhā samānā॥ bahuri rāma asa mana anumānā। hoihi bhīra sabahiṃ mohi jānā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Dwelling at Chitrakoot, Lord Raghupati performed many deeds that are like nectar to the ears. Then Rama reflected, 'Now that people have come to know Me, a great crowd will gather here.'

Chaupai

सकल मुनिन्ह सन बिदा कराई। सीता सहित चले द्वौ भाई॥ अत्रि के आश्रम जब प्रभु गयऊ। सुनत महामुनि हरषित भयऊ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

sakala muninhaṃ san bidā karāī। sītā sahita cale dvau bhāī॥ atri ke āśrama jaba prabhu gayau। sunata mahāmuni harṣita bhayau॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

So, after taking leave of all the sages, the two brothers departed with Sita. When the Lord went to Sage Atri's hermitage, the great sage was delighted as soon as he heard of His arrival.

Chaupai

पुलकित गात अत्रि उठि धाए। देखि रामु आतुर चलि आए॥ करत दंडवत मुनि उर लाए। प्रेम बारि द्वौ जन अन्हवाए॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pulakita gāta atri uṭhi dhāe। dekhi ramu ātura cali āe॥ karata daṇḍavata muni ura lāe। prema bāri dvau jana anhavee॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

His body thrilled with joy, and Atri rose and ran forward. Seeing Rama coming toward him, He came still more quickly. The sage embraced Rama to his heart while Rama was bowing in prostration, and he bathed both brothers with the waters of his loving tears.

Chaupai

देखि राम छबि नयन जुड़ाने। सादर निज आश्रम तब आने॥ करि पूजा कहि बचन सुहाए। दिए मूल फल प्रभु मन भाए॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

dekhi rāma chabi nayana juḍāne। sādara nija āśrama taba āne॥ kari pūjā kahi bacana suhāe। die mūla phala prabhu mana bhāe॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Seeing Rama's beauty, the sage's eyes became refreshed. Then he respectfully brought Him to his hermitage. After worshipping Him and speaking lovely words, the sage offered roots and fruits, which greatly pleased the Lord's heart.

Soratha

प्रभु आसन आसीन भरि लोचन सोभा निरखि। मुनिबर परम प्रबीन जोरि पानि अस्तुति करत॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

prabhu āsana āsīna bhari locana sobhā nirakhi। munibara parama prabīna jori pāni astuti karata॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

The Lord sat upon the seat. Gazing at His beauty with eyes filled, the supremely wise best of sages joined his hands and began to offer praise.

Chhand

नमामि भक्त वत्सलं। कृपालु शील कोमलं। भजामि ते पदांबुजं। अकामिनां स्वधामदं॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

namāmi bhakta vatsalaṃ। kṛpālu śīla komalaṃ। bhajāmi te padāṃbujaṃ। akāmināṃ svadhāmadaṃ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

I bow to You, O Lover of devotees, O compassionate one, O gentle by nature. I worship Your lotus feet, which grant Your own abode to those who are free from desire.

Chhand

निकाम श्याम सुंदरं। भवांबुनाथ मंदरं। प्रफुल्ल कंज लोचनं। मदादि दोष मोचनं॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

nikāma śyāma suṃdaraṃ। bhavāṃbunātha maṃdaraṃ। prafulla kaṃja locanaṃ। madādi doṣa mocanaṃ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

You are supremely beautiful, dark-hued, the Mandara mountain for churning the ocean of worldly existence, lotus-eyed, and the remover of faults such as pride.

Chhand

प्रलंब बाहु विक्रमं। प्रभोऽप्रमेय वैभवं। निषंग चाप सायकं। धरं त्रिलोक नायकं॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

pralaṃba bāhu vikramaṃ। prabho'prameya vaibhavaṃ। niṣaṃga cāpa sāyakaṃ। dharaṃ triloka nāyakaṃ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord, the valor of Your long arms and Your majesty are beyond measure. You bear the quiver, bow, and arrows, and You are the Lord of the three worlds.

Chhand

दिनेश वंश मंडनं। महेश चाप खंडनं। मुनींद्र संत रंजनं। सुरारि वृंद भंजनं॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

dineśa vaṃśa maṃḍanaṃ। maheśa cāpa khaṃḍanaṃ। munīṃdra saṃta raṃjanaṃ। surāri vṛṃda bhaṃjanaṃ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

You are the ornament of the Solar dynasty, the breaker of Shiva's bow, the delight of sages and saints, and the destroyer of the hosts of the enemies of the gods.

Chhand

मनोज वैरि वंदितं। अजादि देव सेवितं। विशुद्ध बोध विग्रहं। समस्त दूषणापहं॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

manoja vairi vaṃditaṃ। ajādi deva sevitaṃ। viśuddha bodha vigrahaṃ। samasta dūṣaṇāpahaṃ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning:

You are worshiped by Shiva, the enemy of Kamadeva, served by Brahma and the other gods, the embodiment of pure knowledge, and the remover of all faults.

Chhand

नमामि इंदिरा पतिं। सुखाकरं सतां गतिं। भजे सशक्ति सानुजं। शची पति प्रियानुजं॥ ६ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

namāmi iṃdirā patiṃ। sukhākaraṃ satāṃ gatiṃ। bhaje saśakti sānujaṃ। śacī pati priyānujaṃ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning:

O Lord of Lakshmi, source of happiness and refuge of the good, I bow to You. I worship You together with Your शक्ति and younger brother, the beloved younger brother of Shachi's lord.

Chhand

त्वदंघ्रि मूल ये नराः। भजंति हीन मत्सराः। पतंति नो भवार्णवे। वितर्क वीचि संकुले॥ ७ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tvadaṃghri mūla ye narāḥ। bhajaṃti hīna matsarāḥ। pataṃti no bhavārṇave। vitarka vīci saṃkule॥ 7 ॥

Meaning:

Those who, free from envy, worship the root of Your feet do not fall into the ocean of worldly existence, which is crowded with waves of doubt and argument.

Chhand

विविक्त वासिनः सदा। भजंति मुक्तये मुदा। निरस्य इंद्रियादिकं। प्रयांति ते गतिं स्वकं॥ ८ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

vivikta vāsinaḥ sadā। bhajaṃti muktaye mudā। nirasya indriyādikaṃ। prayāṃti te gatiṃ svakaṃ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning:

Those who dwell in solitude and, for the sake of liberation, restrain the senses and worship You with joy attain their own true state.

Chhand

तमेकमद्भुतं प्रभुं। निरीहमीश्वरं विभुं। जगद्गुरुं च शाश्वतं। तुरीयमेव केवलं॥ ९ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

tamekamadbhutaṃ prabhuṃ। nirīhamīśvaraṃ vibhuṃ। jagadguruṃ ca śāśvataṃ। turīyameva kevalaṃ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning:

You are the one, wondrous Lord; desireless, sovereign, all-pervading, Teacher of the world, eternal, the fourth state beyond the three गुणas, and utterly absolute.

Chhand

भजामि भाव वल्लभं। कुयोगिनां सुदुर्लभं। स्वभक्त कल्प पादपं। समं सुसेव्यमन्वहं॥ १० ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

bhajāmi bhāva vallabhaṃ। kuyogināṃ sudurlabhaṃ। svabhakta kalpa pādapaṃ। samaṃ susevyamanvahaṃ॥ 10 ॥

Meaning:

I continually worship Him, who is dear to devotion, very hard to attain for the spiritually mistaken, a wish-fulfilling tree for His devotees, impartial, and always easy to serve.

Chhand

अनूप रूप भूपतिं। नतोऽहमुर्विजा पतिं। प्रसीद मे नमामि ते। पदाब्ज भक्ति देहि मे॥ ११ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

anūpa rūpa bhūpatiṃ। nato'hamurvijā patiṃ। prasīda me namāmi te। padābja bhakti dehi me॥ 11 ॥

Meaning:

O incomparable beauty, O Lord of the earth, O Lord of Janaki, I bow to You. Be gracious to me; I salute You. Grant me devotion to Your lotus feet.

Chhand

पठंति ये स्तवं इदं। नरादरेण ते पदं। व्रजंति नात्र संशयं। त्वदीय भक्ति संयुताः॥ १२ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

paṭhaṃti ye stavaṃ idaṃ। narādareṇa te padaṃ। vrajaṃti nātra saṃśayaṃ। tvadīya bhakti saṃyutāḥ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning:

Those who read this hymn with reverence will surely reach Your supreme abode, endowed with devotion to You.

Doha

बिनती करि मुनि नाइ सिरु कह कर जोरि बहोरि। चरन सरोरुह नाथ जनि कबहुँ तजै मति मोरि॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

binatī kari muni nāi siru kaha kara jori bahori। carana saroruha nātha jani kabahuṃ tajai mati mori॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

After making this prayer and bowing his head, the sage said with folded hands, "O Lord, may my mind never forsake Your lotus feet."
