पवन तनय के बचन सुनि बिहँसे रामु सुजान। दच्छिन दिसि अवलोकि प्रभु बोले कृपा निधान॥ १२ (ख) ॥

pavana tanaya ke bachana suni bihaṃse rāmu sujāna। dachchina disi avaloki prabhu bole kṛpā nidhāna॥ 12 (b) ॥
Meaning:
Hearing the words of Hanuman, son of the Wind, the wise Rama smiled. Then, looking toward the south, the ocean of mercy, the Lord spoke—
देखु बिभीषन दच्छिन आसा। घन घमंड दामिनी बिलासा॥ मधुर मधुर गरजइ घन घोरा। होइ बृष्टि जनि उपल कठोरा॥ १ ॥

dekhu bibhīṣana dacchina āsā। ghana ghamaṃḍa dāminī bilāsā॥ madhura madhura garajai ghana ghorā। hoi biṛṣṭi jani upala kaṭhorā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
Look, Vibhishan, toward the south: how the clouds are swelling and lightning is flashing. The terrible cloud is rumbling softly, softly. May there not be a shower of hard hailstones!
कहत बिभीषन सुनहु कृपाला। होइ न तड़ित न बारिद माला॥ लंका सिखर उपर आगारा। तहँ दसकंधर देख अखारा॥ २ ॥

kahata bibhīṣana sunahu kṛpālā। hoi na taḍita na bārida mālā॥ laṃkā sikhara upara āgārā। tahaṃ dasakandhara dekha akhārā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Vibhishan said, 'Listen, O Merciful One, this is neither lightning nor a mass of clouds. On the summit of Lanka stands a palace. There Ravana, the ten-headed one, is watching an arena of song and dance.'
छत्र मेघडंबर सिर धारी। सोइ जनु जलद घटा अति कारी॥ मंदोदरी श्रवन ताटंका। सोइ प्रभु जनु दामिनी दमंका॥ ३ ॥

chatra meghaḍaṃbara sira dhārī। soi janu jalada ghaṭā ati kārī॥ mandodarī śravana tāṭaṃkā। soi prabhu janu dāminī damaṃkā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Ravana has placed on his head a cloud-canopy, vast and dark like a mass of clouds. That very thing seems like an extremely black cloud-bank. And the earrings in Mandodari's ears, O Lord, seem like lightning flashing.
बाजहिं ताल मृदंग अनूपा। सोइ रव मधुर सुनहु सुरभूपा॥ प्रभु मुसुकान समुझि अभिमाना। चाप चढ़ाइ बान संधाना॥ ४ ॥

bājahiṃ tāla mṛdaṃga anūpā। soi rava madhura sunahu surabhūpā॥ prabhu musukāna samujhi abhimānā। cāpa chaṛhāi bāna saṃdhānā॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O lord of the gods, listen: the unmatched beat of cymbals and drums is sounding. That is the same sweet [thunder-like] sound. Understanding Ravana's pride, the Lord smiled. He raised His bow and fitted the arrow to it.
छत्र मुकुट ताटंक तब हते एकहीं बान। सब कें देखत महि परे मरमु न कोऊ जान॥ १३ (क) ॥

chatra mukuṭa tāṭaṃka taba hate ekahīṃ bāna। saba keṃ dekhata mahi pare maramu na koū jāna॥ 13 (a) ॥
Meaning:
And with a single arrow He cut down the [Ravana's] umbrella-crown and [Mandodari's] earrings. In everyone's sight they fell to the ground, but no one knew the secret of it.
अस कौतुक करि राम सर प्रबिसेउ आइ निषंग। रावन सभा ससंक सब देखि महा रसभंग॥ १३ (ख) ॥

asa kautuka kari rāma sara prabiseu āi niṣaṃga। rāvana sabhā sasaṃka saba dekhi mahā rasabhaṃga॥ 13 (b) ॥
Meaning:
After performing this marvel, Rama's arrow returned and went back into the quiver. Seeing this great breaking of the festive mood, all of Ravana's assembly was filled with fear.
कंप न भूमि न मरुत बिसेषा। अस्त्र सस्त्र कछु नयन न देखा॥ सोचहिं सब निज हृदय मझारी। असगुन भयउ भयंकर भारी॥ १ ॥

kaṃpa na bhūmi na maruta biseṣā। astra sastra kachu nayana na dekhā॥ sochahiṃ saba nija hṛdaya majhārī। asaguna bhayau bhayaṃkara bhārī॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
There was no earthquake and no special wind. No weapon was seen by anyone's eyes. [Then how did these umbrella, crown, and earrings fall?] Everyone was thinking in their hearts that this was a dreadful omen.
दसमुख देखि सभा भय पाई। बिहसि बचन कह जुगुति बनाई॥ सिरउ गिरे संतत सुभ जाही। मुकुट परे कस असगुन ताही॥ २ ॥

dasamukha dekhi sabhā bhaya pāī। bihasi bachana kaha juguti banāī॥ sirau gire saṃtata subha jāhī। mukuṭa pare kasa asaguna tāhī॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Seeing the assembly alarmed, Ravana laughed and, with cunning words, said: 'For one for whom the falling of heads has always been auspicious, how can the falling of a crown be an ill omen?'
