Sugriva's Renunciation
Touched by the Lord's grace and greatness, Sugriva develops a spirit of detachment. He begins to see the fleeting nature of worldly attachment and the value of taking refuge in the Lord.

उपजा ग्यान बचन तब बोला। नाथ कृपाँ मन भयउ अलोला॥ सुख संपति परिवार बड़ाई। सब परिहरि करिहउँ सेवकाई॥ ८ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
upajā gyāna bacana taba bolā। nātha kṛpāṃ mana bhayau alolā॥ sukha saṃpati parivāra baḍāī। saba parihari karihauṃ sevakāī॥ 8 ॥
Meaning:
When true understanding arose, he spoke these words: “O Lord, by your grace my mind has become steady. Leaving aside all happiness, wealth, family, and greatness, I shall serve you alone.”
ए सब राम भगति के बाधक। कहहिं संत तव पद अवराधक॥ सत्रु मित्र सुख दुख जग माहीं। मायाकृत परमारथ नाहीं॥ ९ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
e saba rāma bhagati ke bādhaka। kahahiṃ santa tava pada avarādhaka॥ satru mitra sukha dukha jaga māhīṃ। māyākṛta paramāratha nāhīṃ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning:
For the saints who worship your feet say that all these things stand against devotion to Rama. In this world, all opposites—enemy and friend, joy and sorrow—are created by Maya; in truth, they do not exist.
बालि परम हित जासु प्रसादा। मिलेहु राम तुम्ह समन बिषादा॥ सपनें जेहि सन होइ लराई। जागें समुझत मन सकुचाई॥ १० ॥

bāli parama hita jāsu prasādā। milehu rāma tumha samana biṣādā॥ sapaneṃ jehi sana hoi larāī। jāgẽ samujhata mana sakucāī॥ 10 ॥
Meaning:
O Rama, Bali is my greatest benefactor, for by his grace I have met you, who destroy sorrow. And if I were to quarrel with him even in a dream, I would feel ashamed upon waking and remembering it.
अब प्रभु कृपा करहु एहि भाँती। सब तजि भजनु करौं दिन राती॥ सुनि बिराग संजुत कपि बानी। बोले बिहँसि रामु धनुपानी॥ ११ ॥

aba prabhu kṛpā karahu ehi bhāṃtī। saba taji bhajanu karauṃ dina rātī॥ suni birāga saṃjuta kapi bānī। bole bihaṃsi rāmu dhanupānī॥ 11 ॥
Meaning:
O Lord, now grant me your grace in such a way that, leaving everything aside, I may worship you day and night. Hearing Sugriva’s dispassionate words, Lord Rama, who held the bow in his hand, smiled and spoke.
जो कछु कहेहु सत्य सब सोई। सखा बचन मम मृषा न होई॥ नट मरकट इव सबहि नचावत। रामु खगेस बेद अस गावत॥ १२ ॥

jo kachhu kahehu satya saba soī। sakhā bacana mama mṛṣā na hoī॥ naṭa marakaṭa iva sabahi nacāvata। rāmu khagesa beda asa gāvata॥ 12 ॥
Meaning:
Whatever you have said is all true; yet, O friend, my word does not fail in falsehood (that is, Bali will indeed be slain and you will obtain the kingdom). [Kakbhushundi says:] O Garuda, king of birds, Rama makes all beings dance like a juggler’s monkeys; so the Veda declares.
लै सुग्रीव संग रघुनाथा। चले चाप सायक गहि हाथा॥ तब रघुपति सुग्रीव पठावा। गर्जेसि जाइ निकट बल पावा॥ १३ ॥

lai sugrīva saṃga raghunāthā। cale cāpa sāyaka gahi hāthā॥ taba raghupati sugrīva paṭhāvā। garjesi jāi nikaṭa bala pāvā॥ 13 ॥
Meaning:
Then Lord Raghunatha set out, taking Sugriva with him and holding bow and arrows in his hands. After that, Raghuapati sent Sugriva to Bali. Empowered by Rama’s strength, Sugriva went near Bali and roared.
सुनत बालि क्रोधातुर धावा। गहि कर चरन नारि समुझावा॥ सुनु पति जिन्हहि मिलेउ सुग्रीवा। ते द्वौ बंधु तेज बल सींवा॥ १४ ॥

sunata bāli krodhātura dhāvā। gahi kara carana nāri samujhāvā॥ sunu pati jinhahi mileu sugrīvā। te dvau bandhu teja bala sīṃvā॥ 14 ॥
Meaning:
As soon as Bali heard it, he rushed forward in anger. His wife Tara caught his feet and counseled him: “Listen, my lord—the two brothers Sugriva has met are the very limit of strength and splendor.”
कह बाली सुनु भीरु प्रिय समदरसी रघुनाथ। जौं कदाचि मोहि मारहिं तौ पुनि होउँ सनाथ॥ ७ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
kaha bālī sunu bhīru priya samadarasī raghunātha। joṃ kadāci mohi mārahiṃ tau puni hoūṃ sanātha॥ 7 ॥
Meaning:
Bali said, “O timid one, beloved, listen: Lord Raghunatha is impartial to all. If by chance he does kill me, then I shall become truly sheltered—for I shall attain the supreme state.”
