The Vanaras Meet the Ascetic Swayamprabha in the Cave

While searching for Sita, the vanaras enter a wondrous cave and meet the ascetic Swayamprabha. She receives them kindly and helps them onward on their journey.

Chaupai

दूरि ते ताहि सबन्हि सिरु नावा। पूछें निज बृत्तांत सुनावा॥ तेहिं तब कहा करहु जल पाना। खाहु सुरस सुंदर फल नाना॥ १ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

dūri te tāhi sabani siru nāvā। pūcheṃ nija bṛttāṃta sunāvā॥ tehiṃ taba kahā karahu jala pānā। khāhu surasa sundara phala nānā॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

Then everyone bowed their heads to him from afar. On being questioned, he told them his whole story. Then he said, 'Drink water, and eat the many sweet, beautiful fruits.'

Chaupai

मज्जनु कीन्ह मधुर फल खाए। तासु निकट पुनि सब चलि आए॥ तेहिं सब आपनि कथा सुनाई। मैं अब जाब जहाँ रघुराई॥ २ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

majjanu kīnha madhura phala khāe। tāsu nikaṭa puni saba cali āe॥ tehiṃ saba āpani kathā sunāī। maiṃ aba jāba jahāṃ raghurāī॥ 2 ॥

Meaning:

[Having received his instruction], all bathed, ate the sweet fruits, and then all came back to him. Then he told them all his story, [saying,] 'I shall now go where Raghurai is.'

Chaupai

मूदहु नयन बिबर तजि जाहू। पैहहु सीतहि जनि पछिताहू॥ नयन मूदि पुनि देखहिं बीरा। ठाढ़े सकल सिंधु कें तीरा॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

mūdahu nayana bibara taji jāhū। paihahu sītahi jani pachitāhū॥ nayana mūdi puni dekhahiṃ bīrā। ṭhāṛhe sakala siṃdhu keṃ tīrā॥ 3 ॥

Meaning:

Close your eyes and leave the cave. You will find Sita; do not despair. Closing their eyes, and then opening them again, the heroes saw that they were standing on the shore of the ocean.

Chaupai

सो पुनि गई जहाँ रघुनाथा। जाइ कमल पद नाएसि माथा॥ नाना भाँति बिनय तेहिं कीन्ही। अनपायनी भगति प्रभु दीन्ही॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

so puni gaī jahāṃ raghunāthā। jāi kamala pada nāesi māthā॥ nānā bhāṃti binaya tehiṃ kīnhī। anapāinī bhagati prabhu dīnhī॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

Then she herself went where Lord Raghunatha was. Going there, she bowed her head to the Lord’s lotus feet and prayed in many ways. The Lord granted her unwavering devotion.

Doha

बदरीबन कहुँ सो गई प्रभु अग्या धरि सीस। उर धरि राम चरन जुग जे बंदत अज ईस॥ २५ ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

badarībana kahuṃ so gaī prabhu agyā dhari sīsa। ura dhari rāma carana juga je baṃdata aja īsa॥ 25 ॥

Meaning:

Bearing the Lord’s command upon her head, and holding in her heart the twin feet of Rama, worshipped even by Brahma and Shiva, she went to Badarivan.
