लागति अवध भयावनि भारी। मानहुँ कालराति अँधिआरी॥ घोर जंतु सम पुर नर नारी। डरपहिं एकहि एक निहारी॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
lāgati avadha bhayāvani bhārī। mānahuṃ kālarāti aṃdhiārī॥ ghora jantu sama pura nara nārī। ḍarapahiṃ ekahi eka nihārī॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
Ayodhya appeared terribly fearsome, as though it were the dark night of death itself. The men and women of the city, like dreadful creatures, trembled on seeing one another.
Context
This is Chaupai 3, Under Doha 83 from Ayodhya Kand, in the episode “Departure for the Forest, Ayodhya Left Behind”. The episode describes Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana departing for the forest while Ayodhya's grieving citizens are left sleeping behind.
