घर मसान परिजन जनु भूता। सुत हित मीत मनहुँ जमदूता॥ बागन्ह बिटप बेलि कुम्हिलाहीं। सरित सरोबर देखि न जाहीं॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
ghara masāna parijana janu bhūtā। suta hita mīta manahuṃ jamadūtā॥ bāganha biṭapa beli kumhilāhīṃ। sarita sarobara dekhi na jāhīṃ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning
The house seemed like a cremation ground; relatives appeared like ghosts; sons, well-wishers, and friends seemed like messengers of Yama. In the gardens, trees and vines were withering; rivers and ponds were so dreadful that one could not even look at them.
Context
This is Chaupai 4, Under Doha 83 from Ayodhya Kand, in the episode “Departure for the Forest, Ayodhya Left Behind”. The episode describes Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana departing for the forest while Ayodhya's grieving citizens are left sleeping behind.
