अबला कच भूषन भूरि छुधा। धनहीन दुखी ममता बहुधा॥ सुख चाहहिं मूढ़ न धर्म रता। मति थोरि कठोरि न कोमलता॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
abalā kach bhūṣan bhūri chudhā। dhanahīn dukhī mamatā bahudhā॥ sukh chāhahin mūḍh na dharma ratā। mati thori kaṭhori na komalatā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning
Their hair is their only ornament, and they suffer great hunger (that is, they remain ever unsatisfied). Being without wealth and having many forms of attachment, they remain unhappy. Though foolish, they desire happiness, but they are not devoted to righteousness. Their understanding is slight and harsh; they have no gentleness.
