Insult to the Guru and the Account of Shiva's Curse
Kakbhushundi narrates the event from his former birth in which disrespect toward his guru brought Shiva's curse. That severe turning point eventually becomes the means of divine grace.

एक बार हर मंदिर जपत रहेउँ सिव नाम। गुर आयउ अभिमान तें उठि नहिं कीन्ह प्रनाम॥ १०६ (क) ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
eka bāra hara mandira japata raheū̃ siva nāma। gura āyau abhimāna teṃ uṭhi nahiṃ kīnha pranāma॥ 106 (a) ॥
Meaning:
One day I was chanting Shiva's name in Shiva's temple. Then the guru arrived, but in my pride I did not get up to bow to him.
सो दयाल नहिं कहेउ कछु उर न रोष लवलेस। अति अघ गुर अपमानता सहि नहिं सके महेस॥ १०६ (ख) ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
so dayāla nahiṃ kaheu kachu ura na roṣa lavalesa। ati agha gura apamānatā sahi nahiṃ sake mahesa॥ 106 (b) ॥
Meaning:
The compassionate one said nothing; not even a trace of anger arose in his heart. But the offense of disrespecting the guru is a great sin, and Mahesh could not bear it.
मंदिर माझ भई नभबानी। रे हतभाग्य अग्य अभिमानी॥ जद्यपि तव गुर कें नहिं क्रोधा। अति कृपाल चित सम्यक बोधा॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
mandira mājha bhaī nabhabānī। re hatabhāgya agya abhimānī॥ jadyapi tava gura keṃ nahiṃ krodhā। ati kṛpāla cita samyaka bodhā॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
An oracle sounded in the temple: “O wretch, O fool, O proud one! Although your guru has no anger, he is extremely compassionate of heart and has perfect knowledge.”
तदपि साप सठ दैहउँ तोही। नीति बिरोध सोहाइ न मोही॥ जौं नहिं दंड करौं खल तोरा। भ्रष्ट होइ श्रुतिमारग मोरा॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
tadapi sāpa saṭha daihauṃ tohī। nīti virodha sohāi na mohī॥ jaũ nahiṃ daṇḍa karauṃ khala torā। bhraṣṭa hoi śrutimāraga morā॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
Even so, O fool, I will curse you, because opposition to righteousness does not please me. O wicked one, if I do not punish you, my path of the Vedas will be corrupted.
जे सठ गुर सन इरिषा करहीं। रौरव नरक कोटि जुग परहीं॥ त्रिजग जोनि पुनि धरहिं सरीरा। अयुत जन्म भरि पावहिं पीरा॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
je saṭha gura sana iriṣā karahīṃ। raurava naraka koṭi juga parahīṃ॥ trijaga joni puni dharahiṃ sarīrā। ayuta janma bhari pāvahiṃ pīrā॥ 3 ॥
Meaning:
Those fools who envy the guru fall into the Raurava hell for countless ages. Then they take bodies in the forms of animals and birds, and suffer pain for ten thousand births.
बैठि रहेसि अजगर इव पापी। सर्प होहि खल मल मति ब्यापी॥ महा बिटप कोटर महुँ जाई। रहु अधमाधम अधगति पाई॥ ४ ॥

baiṭhi rahesi ajagara iva pāpī। sarpa hohi khala mala mati byāpī॥ mahā biṭapa koṭara mahũ jāī। rahu adhamādhama adhagati pāī॥ 4 ॥
Meaning:
O sinner, you sat before your guru like a python. You wicked one, your mind is overtaken by impurity, so become a serpent. And, worst of the low, having attained this degraded state, go and live in the hollow of some great tree.
हाहाकार कीन्ह गुर दारुन सुनि सिव साप। कंपित मोहि बिलोकि अति उर उपजा परिताप॥ १०७ (क) ॥

hāhākāra kīnha gura dāruna suni siva sāpa। kaṃpita mohi biloki ati ura upajā paritāpa॥ 107 (a) ॥
Meaning:
Hearing Shiva's dreadful curse, the guru cried out in anguish. Seeing me trembling, great pain arose in his heart.
करि दंडवत सप्रेम द्विज सिव सन्मुख कर जोरि। बिनय करत गदगद स्वर समुझि घोर गति मोरि॥ १०७ (ख) ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
kari daṇḍavata saprema dvija siva sanmukha kara jori। binaya karata gadgada svara samujhi ghora gati mori॥ 107 (b) ॥
Meaning:
With love, the Brahmin prostrated himself before Shiva and, hands joined, humbly pleaded, his voice choked with emotion, thinking of my terrible fate.
