Auspicious Invocation
Aranyakanda opens with a reverent invocation. Tulsidas remembers Lord Rama, Sita, and the Guru, setting the canto in a sacred and auspicious mood.

मूलं धर्मतरोर्विवेकजलधेः पूर्णेन्दुमानन्ददं वैराग्याम्बुजभास्करं ह्यघघनध्वान्तापहं तापहम्। मोहाम्भोधरपूगपाटनविधौ स्वःसम्भवं शङ्करं वन्दे ब्रह्मकुलं कलङ्कशमनं श्रीरामभूपप्रियम्॥ १ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
mūlaṃ dharmatarorvivekajaladheḥ pūrṇendumānandadaṃ vairāgyāmbujabhāskaraṃ hyaghaghanadhvāntāpahaṃ tāpaham। mohāmbhodharapūgapāṭanavidhau svaḥsambhavaṃ śaṅkaraṃ vande brahmakulaṃ kalaṅkaśamanaṃ śrīrāmabhūpapriyam॥ 1 ॥
Meaning:
I bow to Lord Shiva, beloved of King Shri Rama, who is the root of the tree of dharma, the full moon delighting the ocean of discernment, the sun that causes the lotus of dispassion to bloom, the remover of the thick darkness of sin, the reliever of the threefold suffering, the wind-born one in the task of scattering the clouds of delusion, and the one who removes the stain of the Brahmin lineage.
सान्द्रानन्दपयोदसौभगतनुं पीताम्बरं सुन्दरं पाणौ बाणशरासनं कटिलसत्तूणीरभारं वरम्। राजीवायतलोचनं धृतजटाजूटेन संशोभितं सीतालक्ष्मणसंयुतं पथिगतं रामाभिरामं भजे॥ २ ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
sāndrānandapayodasaubhagatanuṃ pītāmbaraṃ sundaraṃ pāṇau bāṇaśarāsanaṃ kaṭilasattūṇīrabhāraṃ varam। rājīvāyatalocanaṃ dhṛtajatājūṭena saṃśobhitaṃ sītālakṣmaṇasaṃyutaṃ pathigataṃ rāmābhirāmaṃ bhaje॥ 2 ॥
Meaning:
I worship Shri Rama, delight of all, whose body is beautiful and blissful like a cloud laden with condensed delight, who wears a lovely yellow robe, whose hands hold arrows and a bow, whose waist is adorned with a splendid quiver, whose eyes are large like lotuses, whose matted locks beautify Him, and who is accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana as He travels along the path.
